It’s been a while, but there was a time when Eastern Air Lines was the top airline flying out of Atlanta. The city was a major center of business for Eastern dating back decades, and when it went out of business in the early 1990s, many of the thousands of employees affected by its closure were based out of Atlanta, according to the New Georgia Encyclopedia.

“They didn’t have a hub and spoke at the time, but this was their main base in the south,” said Joel Levine, a member of the Lawrenceville-based Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 690.

Eastern’s historic ties to the Atlanta make the arrival of a 1929 Ford Tri-Motor Airplane at Briscoe Field in Lawrenceville this weekend a sentimental event, if not a historic one, for former Eastern employees who still live in the area, according to members of the Experimental Airplane Association.

The Ford Tri-Motors in general were the first all-metal commercial airplanes. The particular plane that is visiting Lawrenceville was also the first commercial airplane to be used by Eastern Air Transport — the company that eventually became known as Eastern Air Lines.

The Gwinnett-based EAA Chapter 690 is offering the public chances to ride in the plane from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., from today through Sunday as a fundraiser. Visitors can come to the Gwinnett Aero location at Briscoe Field, 850 Airport Road, in Lawrenceville to ride the plane. Trips cost $75 for walk-up adults and $50 for kids under 17. Trips on the plane can be reserved online for $70 on http://www.flytheford.org.

EAA officials said they were working to try and get permission to provide the flights during a restricted aviation period that will be in effect this afternoon while President Donald Trump is in Atlanta.

For Experimental Aircraft Association officials, however, the chance to ride on the plane is considered a treat given its history. “This is the airplane that started Eastern Airlines,” Cody Welch, one of the plane’s pilots, said.

Welch, who estimates thousands of Eastern retirees still live in the area, later said, “The north end of (Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport) was all Eastern … They were huge.”

Local EAA president Randy Epstein said rides in the plane will last about 20 minutes and take nine passengers at a time up to the Mall of Georgia area and back.

“It’s very cool from our perspective,” he said. “Our members love seeing the airplane. The public that knows about it loves coming out and seeing it. It’s something really different for folks. We’re all used to huge jets nowadays — 767s, 777s — but here represents the beginning of the passenger age of aviation.”

Visiting plane has done a lot over the years

The plane, which ended up sitting in a hangar at Briscoe Field on Thursday because of rough flying weather, has served in various functions throughout its life. In addition to beginning as Eastern’s first commercial plane, it later became Cubana Airlines’ first commercial plane. After that, it was — for a short time — the personal airplane of a dictator in the Dominican Republic and was eventually used for barnstorming and fire suppression in the U.S.

It also appeared in the 1965 Jerry Lewis film, “The Family Jewels,” and the 2009 Johnny Depp film, “Public Enemies.” “It’s had an interesting history,” Welch said.

There were 199 Ford Tri-Motor planes built between 1927 and 1932 and the national EAA has the only two planes that are still touring the U.S.

The planes, which could only seat about seven passengers, had a lot of innovative approaches to flight. There was a small bathroom at the back of the plane. There were small lights above each seat that the passenger could flip a switch to turn out.

There was also a small scoop on the window that the extended outward to provide a sort of air conditioning for the passenger. The planes fly below 10,000 feet which is why the windows could be designed that way without it having a negative impact on the plane and air pressure, Welch said.

“It’s an airliner,” he said. “What’s nice about this is there is plenty of headroom and … compared to a modern-day airplane (the leg room) is really comfy. Everybody has this huge picture window. The wing is not in the way (it’s above the windows) so everybody has an awesome view of the ground they’re flying over.”

There have been some changes including alterations to the interior, some of which were done to restore some of the original look of the plane. Two more seats were also added where a radio room was once located and sturdier seats with seat belts were installed.

The bathroom was also removed. The original engines were replaced with three radial engines that each have 450 horsepower. Modernized cockpit controls have been installed, as have new wheels and brakes.

Plane also shows Ford’s place in aviation history

The plane also showcases a less known fact from aviation history — The Ford Motor Company was once in the plane production business.

“(Henry Ford) really birthed commercial aviation,” Welch said. “This was the first all metal commercial airliner. The lists of first for Ford, I can recite and when you get done (reading it), you’ll say, ‘He really did start an industry.’”

Some of those firsts, Welch said, include having the first factory designed to mass produce all-metal airplanes, the first scheduled passenger flight, the first paved runways at an airport (which belonged to Ford), the first airline passenger terminal, the first shuttle bus and the first scheduled air freight flight.

And yet, despite all of the company’s firsts in commercial aviation, Ford didn’t last long in the airplane production industry. The plane’s speed — 95 mph — was one of its drawbacks as commercial aviation quickly grew.

“The airlines were demanding more speed and more passengers and more all-weather capability,” Welch said. “Douglas and Boeing came out with airplanes that met those criteria and the orders for the Tri-Motor came to a stop.” A \ W
