Quince nuevas aerolíneas desembarcan aeroestación
EasyJet y WizzAir aterrizan en Istanbul/IST

Both easyjet and Wizz Air in separate statements on their new routes to Istanbul highlighted their cultural attractions, as well as connectivity with the city.
The opening of the Istanbul Airport in April 2019 also seems key to landing the new airlines. The installation replaced the old Ataturk Airport/ISL, which had limited capacity and offered limited opportunities for low cost airlines to add flights. And the Covid crisis, which began less than a year after the opening of the Istanbul airport, probably delayed any planned launch.
An airBaltic spokesman cited the “availability of time stripes”, as well as other factors, to boost the decision of the Riga based airline to add Istanbul to its map. The operator plans to operate its largest network this summer.
When asked what air service incentives offers the Istanbul Airport, Kadri Samsunlu said that none, but focuses on keeping the base rates low to attract new airlines. The airport offers new operators support for local sales and marketing campaigns to promote their brands in Istanbul, he added.
Airport and local financial incentives for new air services are increasingly common to attract new airlines. For example, Denver airport offers up to US$ 8 million in annual financial support to new airlines that open long distance international routes not served from the capital of Colorado. Incentives are significantly lower for new national routes or flights to markets that are already served by another airline.
