Primer servicio carga aérea con Boeing 737-800BCF

WestJet Cargo Airlines lanzó oficialmente sus operaciones a principios de esta semana, volando uno de sus cargueros 737-800BCF (Boeing Converted Freighter) dedicados por primera vez. La inauguración se produce casi un mes después de que la aerolínea recibiera la aprobación y la certificación de aeronaves del gobierno de Canadá. El primer vuelo se produce cuando la aerolínea está buscando expandir sus servicios de carga. Después de un retraso de casi un año, la aerolínea celebró el primer vuelo el Jueves 20/04. A medida que más aviones se integren perfectamente en su flota, los aviones se utilizarán en rutas dentro de América del Norte, entre Calgary, Halifax, Toronto, Vancouver, Los Ángeles y Miami.

Representantes de la aerolínea y partes interesadas dieron la bienvenida al vuelo inaugural desde Calgary en el Aeropuerto Internacional Toronto Pearson. Con el primer Boeing 737-800BCF de la aerolínea realizando el vuelo, otros tres aviones dedicados serán bienvenidos a su flota en los próximos meses. La Vicepresidenta Ejecutiva de Carga de WestJet, Kristen de Bruijn, la aerolínea planea comenzar su operación de carga en fases. “Para ser una aerolínea confiable tenemos que tener un poco de cuidado con la startup. Así que el enfoque que tomamos es asegurarnos de comenzar gradualmente la operación para que siempre tengamos un avión de repuesto en tierra. No es la forma más rentable y podría dejar oportunidades alrededor. Pero es necesario porque tenemos que empezar, tenemos que hacerlo bien y tenemos que hacerlo a tiempo”, expresó Kristen de Bruijn.

El lanzamiento de la división de carga de WestJet fue un proceso largo y complejo, que requirió asociaciones con otros sectores de la aerolínea, como personal de tierra, vuelo y técnico. Dado que la aerolínea ha operado vuelos de pasajeros durante casi treinta años, la integración de la división de carga probablemente se verá complementada. La empresa conjunta de WestJet Cargo con GTA Group permitirá a la aerolínea implementar rápidamente los 737 en servicio. GTA Group, una compañía que brinda servicios de aviación, se desarrolló con una asociación con la división terrestre de Emirates Airline en 2022. El grupo suministrará manejo de carga para los aviones de WestJet Cargo, ayudando en última instancia en la capacidad de mercado y la financiación de capital para la nueva empresa. La aerolínea espera que su enfoque para comenzar cautelosamente la operación reduzca los posibles errores a medida que su equipo continúa familiarizándose con los cargueros convertidos. Según los informes, la aerolínea dará la bienvenida a su segundo 737-800BCF la próxima semana, con planes de agregar el tercero tres semanas después. Un cuarto carguero se unirá a la flota este verano una vez que se complete su conversión en una instalación en Costa Rica.

WestJet Cargo posee rutas dentro de América del Norte, esperando expandir su red a América Latina. Sin embargo, dado que el 737-800BCF tiene una capacidad máxima de carga útil de alrededor de 23 toneladas/50,706 libras, se requeriría otro tipo de aeronaves de mayor porte para volar directamente desde Canadá a América Latina. La aerolínea espera recibir la aprobación para sus rutas planificadas en América Latina antes de anunciar cualquier destino. “Será en el norte de América Latina porque necesitamos la carga útil máxima para alimentar el centro de Miami”, señaló de Kristen de Bruijn.

First air cargo service with Boeing 737-800BCF

WestJet Cargo Airlines officially launched its operations earlier this week, flying one of its 737-800BCF (Boeing convert Freightter) carriers dedicated for the first time. The inauguration occurs almost a month after the airline received the approval and certification of aircraft of the Government of Canada. The airline hopes that its approach to start cautiously the operation reduces possible errors as its equipment continues to become familiar with converted charges. According to the reports, the airline will welcome its second 737-800BCF next week, with plans to add the third three weeks later. A fourth freighter will join the fleet this summer once its conversion is completed in an installation in Costa Rica.

Routes Latin America
WestJet position has routes within North America, hoping to expand its network to Latin America. However, given that the 737-800BCF has a maximum payload capacity of around 23 tons/50,706 pounds, other types of higher carrier aircraft would be required to fly directly from Canada to Latin America. The airline hopes to receive approval for its planned routes in Latin America before announcing any destination. “It will be in northern Latin America because we need the maximum payload to feed the center of Miami”, said Kristen de Bruijn.
