Inauguración servicio transatlántico desde Islas Feroe
Atlantic Airways ha establecido el 23 de Agosto de 2023 el vuelo inaugural desde las Islas Faroe a los Estados Unidos con la ruta Feroe—Nueva York en vuelo directo con aeronaves Airbus A320neo.
La CEO de Atlantic Airways, Jóhanna á Bergi ha expresado que la nueva ruta viene con muchos desafíos, pues educará la aerolínea a los estadounidenses sobre dónde están las Islas Faroe y por qué deberían visitarlas. Además, la compañía presenta desafíos técnicos y operativos para que el servicio sea rentable. La CEO reconoce estos desafíos y más, pero continúa su esfuerzo para ver hasta qué punto la pequeña aerolínea puede extender su alcance en apoyo del pueblo feroés.
La nueva ruta transatlántica Vagar/FAE—New York/SWF tiene una frecuencia semanal (1Frq/S), mientras que buscaría que la ruta se mantenga en el tiempo. El horario del vuelo también refleja que el vuelo arriba a Stewart en un horario demasiado tarde para los pasajeros que arriban a Nueva York. El retorno del vuelo opera un vuelo diurno hacia el Este que llega a las 10:00 p.m. hora local en las islas.
El Aeropuerto Internacional Stewart (SWF) no fue la primera opción para Atlantic Airways como puerta de entrada; “Estábamos mirando a JFK y a Newark; sabemos que están mucho más cerca de la ciudad de Nueva York”, compartió Jóhanna á Bergi. Pero, en última instancia, el transportista eligió a Stewart. Elegir un aeropuerto alternativo más pequeño a 90 minutos del destino deseado se suma a los desafíos para la ruta. La compañía cita sobre los motivos por qué la aerolínea escogión el Aeropuerto Stewart: “Solo volamos una vez a la semana y esos aeropuertos están muy llenos y son muy caros para operar”, señaló Jóhanna á Bergi. Más allá de las franjas horarias de aterrizaje y el acceso a la puerta, el espacio en el mostrador y el manejo en tierra eran significativamente más caros, especialmente para el número limitado de vuelos, más los costos de la tripulación.

El servicio transatlántico se suspenderá a partir de finales de Octubre de 2023, aunque estiman que retornarían hacia el año próximo 2024, probablemente por una temporada más larga, mientras la compañía tendrá más tiempo para construir sus canales de venta para el mercado.
Perspectivas Faroe-New York
El servicio de una frecuencia semanal entre las Islas Faroe y Nueva York marca un importante hito en la aviación comercial de vuelos transatlánticos y permitirá conectar a los isleños con Estados Unidos. Las proyecciones de los vuelos están sujetos a desarrollarse hasta finales de 10/2023, mientras que permitirán retomar nuevamente la ruta hacia el próximo año 2024.
La razones por la ruta no parece tener consistencia estriban en que las Islas Faroe no hace un centro de tránsito de importancia en los vuelos transatlánticos de América del Norte; haciendo de Islandia un mejor centro de distribución mejor establecido para un afluente tráfico de pasajeros entre las dos costas del viejo continente y América del Norte. Las limitaciones físicas y logísticas en la base de operaciones de Atlantic Airways en el Aeropuerto de Vagar inhiben el potencial de crecimiento. Atlantic Airways podría experimentar una conexión importante desde el centro de Reikiavik en Islandia para aprovechar ese aeropuerto para proyectarse hacia América.

Atlantic Airways has established on August 23, 2023 the inaugural flight from the Faroe Islands to the United States with the Faroe-New York route in a direct flight with Airbus A320neo aircraft.
The CEO of Atlantic Airways, Jóhanna á Bergi has expressed that the new route comes with many challenges, as it will educate the airline to Americans about where the Faroe Islands are and why they should visit. In addition, the company presents technical and operational challenges to make the service profitable. CEO Jóhanna á Bergi acknowledges these challenges and more, but she continues her effort to see how far the small airline can extend its reach in support of the Faroese people. The new transatlantic route Vagar/FAE—New York/SWF has a weekly frequency (1Frq/S), while she would look for the route to be maintained over time. The flight schedule also reflects that the flight arrives at Stewart too late for passengers arriving in New York. The return flight operates a daytime flight to the East that arrives at 10:00 p.m. local time on the islands.
Stewart International Airport (SWF) was not the first choice for Atlantic Airways as a gateway; “We were looking at JFK and Newark; we know they’re much closer to New York City”, Jóhanna á Bergi shared. But ultimately, the carrier chose Stewart. Choosing a smaller alternative airport 90 minutes from the desired destination adds to the challenges for the route. The company quotes about the reasons why the airline chose Stewart Airport: “We only fly once a week and those airports are very crowded and very expensive to operate”, said Jóhanna á Bergi. Beyond landing slots and gate access, counter space and ground handling were significantly more expensive, especially for the limited number of flights, plus crew costs.

The transatlantic service will be suspended from the end of October 2023, although they estimate that they would return by next year 2024, probably for a longer season, while the company will have more time to build its sales channels for the market.
Faroe-New York outlook
The weekly service between the Faroe Islands and New York marks an important milestone in commercial aviation for transatlantic flights and will connect the islanders with the United States. The projections of the flights are subject to development until the end of 10/2023, while they will allow to resume the route towards the next year 2024.
The reasons why the route does not seem to have consistency are that the Faroe Islands are not a major transit center for transatlantic flights from North America; making Iceland a better established distribution center for affluent passenger traffic between the two coasts of the old continent and North America. Physical and logistical constraints at Atlantic Airways’ base of operations at Vagar Airport inhibit growth potential. Atlantic Airways could experience an important connection from the center of Reykjavik in Iceland to take advantage of that airport to project itself towards America.
