Acción reclamos por mejoras salariales
Los pilotos de Southwest Airlines anunciaron una concentración el Jueves 31/08 en el Aeropuerto BWI Thurgood Marshall, Baltimore (Maryland). Las protestas se han multiplicado en otros aeropuertos más concurridos de Estados Unidos, entre ellos los aeropuertos de Los Angeles (California), Hartsfield-Jackson (Atlanta), Houston-Hobby (Texas) y Chicago-Midway (Illinois).
La Asociación de Pilotos de Southwest Airlines (SWAPA) dice que han estado tratando durante tres años de llegar a un acuerdo con la aerolínea, y el 99 por ciento de los miembros del sindicato votaron en Mayo 2023 a favor de una huelga.
SWAPA dice que Southwest Airlines es la última aerolínea importante sin un acuerdo en principio y han perdido cientos de pilotos a otras aerolíneas ya este año. Las negociaciones han durado un proceso de tres años y medio, sin avanzar en las negociaciones contractuales.
“Nuestros pilotos merecen un contrato que corresponda a los pilotos más productivos de la industria, y hemos estado tratando de que Southwest se dé cuenta de que su retraso en llegar a un acuerdo está causando un daño irreparable no solo a nuestros pilotos, sino a la aerolínea misma. Estamos dispuestos a llevar el proceso de RLA hasta su conclusión para garantizar que nuestra aerolínea y nuestros pilotos tengan un futuro seguro. Southwest Airlines simplemente no puede darse el lujo de quedarse de brazos cruzados mientras todas las demás aerolíneas continúan recompensando a sus pilotos y atrayéndolos con mejores contratos y beneficios”, dijo el Presidente de SWAPA, el Capitán Casey Murray.
Esto se produce cuando los Asistentes de Vuelo de American Airlines votaron a favor de la huelga mientras luchan por un nuevo contrato con aumentos salariales y más personal en los vuelos. La aerolínea llegó recientemente a un acuerdo con los pilotos que les da un aumento del 21 por ciento y un aumento del 46 por ciento para 2027. El voto de huelga es en gran medida simbólico porque existen muchos pasos que deben tener lugar antes de que pueda ocurrir una huelga real. Los Asistentes de Vuelo fuera de servicio están celebrando eventos informativos en una docena de aeropuertos para presionar a sus empleadores.

Southwest Airlines pilots announced a rally on Thursday 08/31 at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, Baltimore (Maryland). Protests have multiplied at other busier airports in the United States, including Los Angeles (California), Hartsfield-Jackson (Atlanta), Houston-Hobby (Texas), and Chicago-Midway (Illinois) airports.
The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association (SWAPA) says they have been trying for three years to reach an agreement with the airline, and 99 percent of union members voted in May 2023 to strike.
SWAPA says Southwest Airlines is the last major airline without an agreement in principle and they have lost hundreds of pilots to other airlines already this year. Negotiations have lasted a process of three and a half years, without advancing in the contractual negotiations.
“Our pilots deserve a contract that befits the most productive pilots in the industry, and we have been trying to make Southwest realize that their delay in reaching an agreement is causing irreparable damage not only to our pilots but to the airline itself We are willing to see the RLA process through to completion to ensure our airline and pilots have a secure future Southwest Airlines simply cannot afford to sit idly by while all other airlines continue to reward their pilots and luring them in with better contracts and benefits”, said SWAPA President Captain Casey Murray.
This comes as American Airlines Flight Attendants voted to strike as they fight for a new contract with pay increases and more staff on flights. The airline recently reached an agreement with pilots that gives them a 21 percent raise and a 46 percent raise by 2027. The strike vote is largely symbolic because there are many steps that must take place before it can a real strike occurs. Off-duty Flight Attendants are holding informational events at a dozen airports to lobby their employers.
