La aerolínea estadounidense JetBlue Airways ha tomado la decisión de suspender todas las rutas de vuelos hacia Cuba y anuncia que su último día de servicio será este próximo 17 de Septiembre de 2023.
La aerolínea estadounidense, conocida por realizar el primer vuelo comercial directo a Cuba cuando se estaban restableciendo las relaciones entre los Estados Unidos y la isla en 2016 entre los dos países en más de cincuenta años, ha tomado esta determinación debido a los nuevos retos y obstáculos que enfrentan los viajeros que desean volar a Cuba.
La aerolínea marcó el comienzo de una nueva era de tarifas bajas y excelentes servicios hacia la Isla de Cuba, trayendo beneficios que han impulsado y estimulado el mercado cubano.
El panorama normativo de los viajes aéreos ha sufrido modificaciones, y las restricciones que impactan a los pasajeros que planeaban volar hacia Cuba han llevado a JetBlue a tomar esta difícil decisión. “La demanda de viajes a la isla se ha visto significativamente afectada por los cambios en el panorama regulatorio y las restricciones a la capacidad de nuestros clientes para ingresar a Cuba. Esperamos reanudar nuestro servicio a La Habana y continuar buscando oportunidades dentro de Cuba en caso de que viajar sea más accesible en el futuro. Salir de La Habana nos permitirá redistribuir aviones adicionales en nuestras rutas de mayor rendimiento, donde la demanda de las tarifas bajas y el servicio galardonado de JetBlue está creciendo”, dijo este Jueves 31/08 la aerolínea en un comunicado.
El Gobierno de los Estados Unidos autorizó nuevos vuelos en 2022 de American Airlines como de JetBlue Airways hacia La Habana. American Airlines amplió su servicio con trece frecuencias adicionales por semana desde Miami, mientras que JetBlue agregó una nueva ruta desde Fort Lauderdale. JetBlue había vuelto a poner a la venta pasajes hacia Cuba en Noviembre de 2020 tras los embates de la crisis de la pandemia, incluso antes de que se anunciara oficialmente la reapertura del Aeropuerto Internacional José Martí. Sin embargo, su capacidad de operación estaba limitada, pues solo podía volar hacia La Habana. Esto se debió a una restricción que impedía a las aerolíneas estadounidenses realizar vuelos regulares a otras ciudades de la isla, una medida implementada en 2019 por la administración del entonces presidente Donald Trump.

La aerolínea ha afirmado que ofrecerá reembolsos a aquellos clientes afectados por esta suspensión inesperada. En un comunicado compartido por medios de prensa, JetBlue Airways expresó su deseo de poder reanudar sus operaciones hacia Cuba en el futuro. No obstante, precisó que ello sería una vez que las condiciones de viaje hacia la isla se vuelvan más favorables y los obstáculos se reduzcan.

We look forward to resuming our service to Havana and continuing to pursue opportunities within Cuba in the event to make travel more accessible in the future. Leaving Havana will allow us to redistribute additional aircraft on our highest performing routes, where the demand for JetBlue’s low fares and award-winning service is growing”, said Thursday 08/31 the airline in a statement.
The Government of the United States authorized new flights in 2022 from American Airlines and JetBlue Airways to Havana. American Airlines expanded its service with thirteen additional frequencies per week from Miami, while JetBlue added a new route from Fort Lauderdale. JetBlue had put tickets to Cuba back on sale in November 2020 after the ravages of the pandemic crisis, even before the reopening of the José Martí International Airport was officially announced. However, its operating capacity was limited, since it could only fly to Havana. This was due to a restriction that prevented US airlines from making regular flights to other cities on the island, a measure implemented in 2019 by the administration of then-President Donald Trump.
This news has been received with surprise and not a little concern. The Caribbean island has received many Cuban-American visitors in recent years, and the suspension of JetBlue flights raises new uncertainties about the future of travel between the two countries. The aviation industry has faced numerous challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has dramatically reduced the demand for international travel.
