Deliveries of the narrowbody aircraft will be close to Boeing’s goal of shipping between 400 and 450 of the popular fourth-generation 737s this year, Chief Financial Officer Brian West said at an investor conference Thursday. The profit margins of the company’s defense and commercial units will be negative in the third quarter of 2023, as it faces supply chain disruptions.
The US aircraft manufacturer will inspect aircraft built for faulty parts which could affect some 90 Dreamliners currently manufactured. Brian West’s remarks at the Jefferies conference provided the first detailed look at how Boeing is tackling another manufacturing defect that could go back years. The aviation titan revealed in August 2023 that some holes in the 737 MAX’s bulkheads, which help maintain cabin pressure, were improperly drilled by supplier Spirit AeroSystems.
Boeing is realizing that it is taking longer to resolve the aft-pressure bulkheads issue than an earlier issue for Spirit related to the brackets used to attach the 737’s vertical fin to the main fuselage. Mechanics are inspecting and repairing hundreds of holes per plane. “We have literally armies of people” working on this problem at Boeing and Spirit”, Brian West said. Spirit CEO Tom Gentile is expected to discuss the consequences for its operations.
Although it is devoting resources to address the loss of quality, Boeing expects to hit its free cash flow targets for this year and a long-term goal of generating $10 billion a year by mid-decade, according to West.
The latest quality lapse at Spirit, which builds the 737 frame for Boeing, appears to date back to at least 2017 and could require inspections on more than 1,000 aircraft, Melius Research’s Rob Spingarn wrote in a September 5, 2023 report. “The only program that Spirit had to get now faces a potentially large and long-tail liability”, said Rob Spingarn.
Boeing forecasts an US$ 8 trillion aircraft market, despite declining flights. Commercial flights of less than 800 km are forecast to decline as governments urge consumers to opt for greener means of transport Boeing delivered just 22 of its 737 MAX planes in August 2023 and expects to ship about 70 during the third quarter due to the head pressure issue, according to Brian West.
