México restablece Categoría 1 de seguridad aérea
México ha anunciado el restablecimiento de la Categoría 1 (CAT 1) referente a la seguridad en la aviación comercial. La Administración Federal de Aviación (FAA) de Estados Unidos ha informado el Jueves 14/09 la máxima calificación para volar entre ambos países.
El hecho ocurre poco más de dos años después de que, en mayo de 2021, la FAA rebajó la categoría de México de CAT 1 a CAT 2, al indicar que detectó incumplimiento de los estándares mínimos de seguridad de la Organización de Aviación Civil Internacional (OACI), el organismo asociado con las Naciones Unidas que conecta a los reguladores de la aviación de todo el mundo. Entonces, la institución no especificó la naturaleza precisa del problema. La medida impedía a los transportistas mexicanos lanzar nuevos servicios de aviación a Estados Unidos y prohibía a las aerolíneas estadounidenses compartir códigos con vuelos operados por aerolíneas mexicanas. La industria de aerotransportes mexicana dijo en ese momento que esto representaba una grave afectación para ellos y su contribución a la economía del país. Desde entonces, el Gobierno de México gestionó la recuperación de su nivel previo. La Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes de México (SICT) celebró la decisión de la FAA a través de un mensaje publicado en su cuenta en X, antes Twitter.
La FAA agregó en un comunicado que el retorno es consecuencia del trabajo cercano de las autoridades de ambos países durante más de dos años.
El Embajador de Estados Unidos en México, Ken Salazar, señaló que el hecho “es una muestra más de la cooperación sin precedentes entre nuestros países y del trabajo conjunto que impulsamos para profundizar la integración de América del Norte y fortalecer las cadenas de suministro regionales”.
De acuerdo con las autoridades mexicanas y estadounidenses, el regreso de México a la Categoría 1 de seguridad aérea permitirá que haya un flujo más ágil y un impulso a la economía de ambos países.
“La industria de la aviación ayuda a que nuestras naciones se conozcan mejor y une familias, fortalece nuestro comercio permitiéndonos aprovechar las ventajas del T-MEC (el tratado comercial de ambos países y Canadá) a la par de proteger nuestras cadenas de suministro y nos permite adentrarnos al futuro con mayor dinamismo”, señaló Ken Salazar.
La Cámara Nacional de Aerotransportes (CANAERO) celebró la decisión en su cuenta de X, donde confió en que esto se traducirá “en beneficios de conectividad, competitividad y recuperación de empleos”. Además, agradeció los esfuerzos de las autoridades y legisladores mexicanos, y pidió que su labor garantice que se evite una nueva rebaja de categoría.
Aeroméxico, una de las principales aerolíneas mexicanas, señaló en un comunicado que la recuperación de la Categoría 1 ayudará a reforzar la conectividad con uno de los mercados más importantes para el país.
Aerolíneas satisfechas
Las aerolíneas mexicanas celebraron el Jueves 14/09 que México haya recuperado la Categoría 1 de seguridad área de Estados Unidos, tras haberla perdido hace dos años, al anticipar que les traerá crecimiento.
En un comunicado, Aeroméxico reconoció “el gran esfuerzo realizado por las autoridades de la Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes (SICT), la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE), a las Cámaras de Diputados y Senadores, así como a la Agencia Federal de Aviación Civil (AFAC). Esto para lograr las adecuaciones necesarias que hoy nos permiten recuperar la Categoría 1 en materia de aviación civil, por parte de la Administración Federal de Aviación de Estados Unidos (FAA)”. Aeroméxico continuó diciendo que el regreso de la Categoría 1 implica la posibilidad de reforzar la conectividad con el mercado estadounidense, hacer un uso más eficiente de sus aeronaves y mejorar la experiencia de los clientes.
Volaris Airlines, aerolínea de bajo costo, también reconoció la actuación de las autoridades mexicanas, así como del resto de involucrados en el proceso, incluida la FAA de Estados Unidos por su apoyo, “para poder lograr la certificación de la seguridad aérea nacional”.
Asimismo, la Cámara Nacional de Aerotransportes (CANAERO) celebró también la noticia y determinó que con la decisión anunciada este jueves se eliminan las restricciones para que las aerolíneas de México puedan fortalecer su operación y oferta en el mercado entre México y Estados Unidos.
Las líneas aéreas de México podrán, estableció CANAERO, abrir nuevas rutas entre aeropuertos de dichos países, e incrementar frecuencias de vuelos hacia los destinos donde operan. Asimismo, podrán utilizar aeronaves de última generación que adquirieron durante el periodo de degradación de categoría y que representan beneficios ambientales y para la experiencia de viaje y eliminar afectaciones a los códigos compartidos existentes entre aerolíneas.
La decisión de la FAA, que ocurre tras dos años de trabajo, permitirá a México añadir nuevos servicios y rutas a Estados Unidos, mientras que las aerolíneas estadounidenses volverán a vender billetes y ofrecer servicios compartidos con vuelos mexicanos.

Mexico reestablishes Category 1 air safety
Mexico has announced the re-establishment of Category 1 (CAT 1) regarding safety in commercial aviation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States reported on Thursday 09/14 the maximum qualification to fly between both countries.
The event occurred just over two years after, in May 2021, the FAA downgraded Mexico’s category from CAT 1 to CAT 2, indicating that it detected non-compliance with the minimum safety standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the body associated with the United Nations that connects aviation regulators around the world. So, the institution did not specify the precise nature of the problem. The measure prevented Mexican carriers from launching new aviation services to the United States and prohibited US airlines from code-sharing with flights operated by Mexican airlines. The Mexican air transport industry said at the time that this represented a serious impact on them and their contribution to the country’s economy. Since then, the Government of Mexico managed the recovery of its previous level. The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation of Mexico (SICT) celebrated the FAA’s decision through a message published on its account on X, formerly Twitter.
The FAA added in a statement that the return is a consequence of the close work of the authorities of both countries for more than two years.
The United States Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, noted that the event “is another example of the unprecedented cooperation between our countries and the joint work that we promote to deepen the integration of North America and strengthen regional supply chains”.
According to Mexican and US authorities, Mexico’s return to Category 1 air safety will allow for a more agile flow and a boost to the economies of both countries.
“The aviation industry helps our nations get to know each other better and unites families, strengthens our trade, allowing us to take advantage of the USMCA (the trade agreement between both countries and Canada) while protecting our supply chains and it allows us to enter the future with greater dynamism”, said Ken Salazar.
The National Chamber of Air Transport (CANAERO) celebrated the decision in its X account, where it trusted that this would translate “into benefits of connectivity, competitiveness, and job recovery”. In addition, he thanked the efforts of the Mexican authorities and legislators and asked that their work guarantee that a new downgrade is avoided.
Aeroméxico, one of the main Mexican airlines, said in a statement that the recovery of Category 1 will help strengthen connectivity with one of the most important markets for the country.
Satisfied airlines
Mexican airlines celebrated on Thursday 09/14 that Mexico has recovered Category 1 air safety status from the United States, after having lost it two years ago, anticipating that it will bring them growth.
In a statement, Aeroméxico recognized “the great effort made by the authorities of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), the Chambers of Deputies and Senators, as well as the Federal Agency of Civil Aviation (AFAC). This is to achieve the necessary adjustments that today allow us to recover Category 1 in civil aviation matters, by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)”. Aeroméxico continued by saying that the return of Category 1 implies the possibility of strengthening connectivity with the US market, making more efficient use of its aircraft, and improving the customer experience.
Volaris Airlines, a low-cost airline, also recognized the actions of the Mexican authorities, as well as the rest of those involved in the process, including the United States FAA for its support, “in order to achieve national air safety certification”.
Likewise, the National Chamber of Air Transport (CANAERO) also celebrated the news and determined that with the decision announced this Thursday, the restrictions will be eliminated so that Mexican airlines can strengthen their operation and offer in the market between Mexico and the United States.
Mexican airlines will be able, CANAERO established, to open new routes between airports in said countries, and increase flight frequencies to the destinations where they operate. Likewise, they will be able to use state-of-the-art aircraft that they acquired during the downgrade period and that represent environmental benefits for the travel experience and eliminate impacts on existing shared codes between airlines.
The FAA’s decision, which comes after two years of work, will allow Mexico to add new services and routes to the United States, while US airlines will once again sell tickets and offer shared services with Mexican flights.
