Qatar Airways podría invertir en Virgin Australia

Qatar Airways está negociando para tomar una participación de hasta el 20% en Virgin Australia Airlines, en un acuerdo que podría sacudir el mercado de la aviación australiano. At first glance, people might be confused by this partnership, as Qatar Airways and Qantas Airways belong to the Oneworld Alliance, so one might think that the two airlines would have close cooperation.

Qantas Airways has a joint venture with Emirates Airline, so it prioritizes that partnership over that of Qatar Airways. For years, Qantas has been actively trying to block the growth of Qatar Airways in Australia, as the Australian Government has protectionist policies for Australian airlines.

Typically, if one airline buys a stake in another, it is primarily because the airline expects closer cooperation and to have more control over the other airline’s business decisions. This raises the question of what Qatar Airways would expect to gain from a Virgin Australia investment, given the airlines have a partnership.

Arab experience
The Qatari Government is an important source of capital in the Persian Gulf Region, while on the other hand, the horrible track record that Gulf airlines generally have with investing in foreign airlines is emphasized. On the one hand, Etihad Airways sought to create a network of airlines from Airberlin to Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, Alitalia, Jet Airways among others. Etihad’s airline acquisition strategy at the time may have been the worst investment strategy we have seen in the history of the airline industry, as all airlines have gone into liquidation or simply cut ties.
