Actualización red de rutas a partir 2025

Southwest Airlines, la aerolínea con sede en Dallas, Texas está estrenando seis nuevas rutas como parte de su última extensión de horarios, pero adicionalmente la aerolínea también eliminará cinco rutas. La extensión del horario cubre el período de viajes de vacaciones de primavera del próximo año hasta el 7 de Abril de 2025, y uno de los objetivos de Southwest con esta extensión es lograr que los viajeros aseguren sus viajes ahora.

Southwest Airlines ha agregado seis nuevas rutas con el objetivo de captación de mercado para las vacaciones de primavera. A partir del 8 de Marzo de 2025, la aerolínea agregará un servicio los Sábados desde el Aeropuerto Internacional Nashville (BNA) a Cabo San Lucas (CSL) en México y Punta Cana (PUJ) en la República Dominicana. Estas representan la segunda y tercera ruta internacional de Southwest desde Nashville. La aerolínea vuela desde la ciudad a Cancún, y ahora la aerolínea quiere capturar aún más tráfico de ocio que se dirige al sur de la frontera a destinos en México y el Caribe. Además de las nuevas rutas internacionales, Southwest agregará un servicio diario desde Nashville (BNA) al Aeropuerto Internacional Indianápolis (IND) el 6 de Marzo de 2025. Southwest Airlines, the Dallas, Texas-based carrier, is debuting six new routes as part of its latest schedule extension, but the airline will also eliminate five additional routes. The schedule extension covers next year’s spring break travel period through April 7, 2025, and one of Southwest’s goals with this extension is to get travelers to book now.

Southwest Airlines has added six new routes with the goal of capturing the spring break market. Beginning March 8, 2025, the airline will add Saturday service from Nashville International Airport (BNA) to Cabo San Lucas (CSL) in Mexico and Punta Cana (PUJ) in the Dominican Republic. These represent Southwest’s second and third international routes from Nashville. The airline flies from the city to Cancun, and now the airline wants to capture even more leisure traffic heading south of the border to destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean. In addition to the new international routes, Southwest will add daily service from Nashville (BNA) to Indianapolis International Airport (IND) on March 6, 2025. Southwest is currently Nashville’s largest carrier, and these three new routes will increase the airline’s leadership position in the city. Additionally, Southwest Airlines has announced its spring 2025 schedule, introducing new nonstop flight options for passengers traveling through Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). Beginning March 6, 2025, it will launch seasonal nonstop service from Austin (AUS) to Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) and year-round service to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE).

While the airline is launching new routes, it is contracting on five others with permanent cuts that came along with the schedule extension affecting the Atlanta/ATL—West Palm Beach/PBI, Florida route first operated in November 2013, Burbank/BUR—New Orleans/MSY route launched in June 2024, Burbank/BUR—San Antonio/SAT route launched in June 2024, New York/JFK—Tampa/TPA route first operated in June 2017, Long Beach/LGB—Kansas City/MCI, Missouri, with new route launched in March 2023. Southwest did not share further details about these cuts, including when they would be made. Interestingly, three of the cuts are to routes that were just launched in the last two years. Additionally, Southwest will temporarily drop fifteen routes per season.

Southwest typically gives slightly longer routes to turn a profit, but the airline apparently has no time to waste these days. These routes have apparently performed poorly for the airline as it takes a closer look at its network amid increased investor scrutiny.

The airline is currently adding more markets to Denver, San Diego and Sacramento, launching March 6, 2025. These three destinations join previously announced late-night flights from Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Phoenix. Southwest’s new routes include: Denver/DEN—Baltimore/BMI, Las Vegas/LAS—Atlanta/ATL, Las Vegas/LAS—Chicago/Midway/MDW, Las Vegas/LAS—Nashville/BNA, Los Angeles/LAX—Chicago/Midway/MDW, Los Angeles/LAX—Houston/IAH, Phoenix/PHX—Atlanta/ATL, Phoenix/PHX—Orlando/MCO, San Diego/SAN—Baltimore/BMI, Sacramento/SMF—Baltimore/BMI. Additionally, in June 2025, Southwest announced it would add 42 new unique flights for the upcoming NFL season, bringing fans to their favorite matchups with nonstop flights.

Southwest outlook
Southwest is making changes in markets with the most opportunities and moving away from destinations that are underperforming or oversaturated with competition. The service changes come at a time when Southwest Airlines has been under increased scrutiny from investors for its poor financial performance of late. The company is introducing new changes such as major new initiatives in recent weeks that include eliminating open seating, introducing premium seats with extra legroom and starting night flights.
