Cápsula espacial regresará a Tierra sin tripulación

El primer Starliner tripulado de The Boeing Company regresará a la Tierra sin astronautas el 6 de Septiembre de 2024. La NASA anunció el Jueves 29 de Agosto de 2024 que el Starliner partirá de la Estación Espacial Internacional (ISS) no antes del próximo Viernes 6 de Septiembre de 2024, siempre que el clima coopere y no surjan problemas técnicos, desacoplándose a las 06:04 p.m. EDT/22:04 GMT y aterrizará bajo paracaídas seis horas después en el Puerto Espacial de White Sands en Nuevo México.

Starliner se lanzó el 5 de Junio de 2024 en su primera misión tripulada, llevando a los astronautas de la NASA Suni Williams y Butch Wilmore hacia la ISS. La cápsula se acopló con éxito un día después, pero hubo algo de drama, el Starliner experimentó algunas fugas de helio, y cinco de sus 28 propulsores del sistema de control de reacción fallaron en el camino al laboratorio orbital.

Se suponía que la misión de Starliner, conocida como Crew Flight Test (CFT), duraría solo 10 días más o menos. Pero la NASA y Boeing continuaron extendiendo la estadía orbital de la cápsula mientras estudiaban el problema del propulsor, tratando de comprender qué lo había causado y si podría volver a surgir en el viaje de Starliner de regreso a la Tierra.

The Boeing Company‘s first crewed Starliner will return to Earth without astronauts on September 6, 2024. NASA announced on Thursday, August 29, 2024 that the Starliner will depart the International Space Station (ISS) no earlier than next Friday, September 6, 2024, provided the weather cooperates and no technical problems arise, undocking at 06:04 p.m. EDT/22:04 GMT and landing under parachute six hours later at the White Sands Spaceport in New Mexico.

Starliner launched on June 5, 2024, on its first crewed mission, carrying NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore toward the ISS. The capsule successfully docked a day later, but there was some drama—Starliner experienced some helium leaks, and five of its 28 reaction control system thrusters failed on the way to the orbiting laboratory.

Starliner’s mission, known as the Crew Flight Test (CFT), was supposed to last only 10 days or so. But NASA and Boeing continued to extend the capsule’s orbital stay while they studied the thruster problem, trying to understand what had caused it and whether it could arise again on Starliner’s journey back to Earth.

Ultimately, NASA decided that putting Williams and Wilmore back on Starliner was too risky. The agency announced last weekend that the two astronauts would return home in a SpaceX Dragon capsule in February 2025. That Dragon will launch two astronauts to the ISS on the Crew-9 mission next month in September 2024. Boeing’s capsule, meanwhile, would return home uncrewed. However, we didn’t have a planned departure date for Starliner until today. That information came at the end of a flight readiness review jointly conducted by NASA and Boeing.
