Cancela servicio Orlando—Lansing

Avelo Airlines finaliza su servicio a Orlando desde el Aeropuerto Internacional de la Región Capital de Lansing (LAN), Ingham, Michigan. La compañía con sede en Houston, Texas, que se describe a sí misma como una aerolínea de tarifas ultrabajas, confirmó al Lansing State Journal el miércoles que pondrá fin a los vuelos hacia y desde el Aeropuerto Internacional de la Región Capital.

En 2022, Avelo comenzó a ofrecer dos vuelos semanales a Orlando desde Lansing durante los meses de clima más frío, y debido al éxito de la ruta de Orlando, Fort Meyers se agregó en 3Q2023. El alcalde de Lansing, Andy Schor, calificó la noticia de tremendamente decepcionante. «Tenemos un gran aeropuerto ubicado justo en el centro del estado al que es fácil llegar, fácil de usar y conveniente para muchos. Es lamentable que Avelo no haya podido llegar aquí o en las otras ciudades donde cortaron el servicio. Lansing continúa ofreciendo muchos otros vuelos diarios y tengo fe en que el liderazgo de nuestro aeropuerto hará todo lo posible para buscar aerolíneas que ofrezcan vuelos directos y brinden las mejores opciones para el área de la capital», dijo Andy Schor.

El mes pasado, Apple Vacations dijo que regresará al Aeropuerto Internacional de la Región Capital con vuelos a partir de enero del próximo año a varios lugares tropicales. Apple ha ofrecido vuelos en el aeropuerto desde 2010. Los vuelos que huyen del clima frío comienzan el 25 de Enero y se extenderán hasta el 9 de Abril, según un comunicado del aeropuerto. Las rutas planificadas incluyen vuelos sin escalas desde Lansing a Cancún, México; Lansing a Punta Cana, en República Dominicana; y Lansing a Montego Bay, Jamaica.

El aeropuerto también cuenta con servicio regular de Delta y American Airlines. En Marzo 2024, Breeze Airlines dijo que comenzaría a ofrecer servicio a Orlando y Fort Myers, Florida, en octubre de este año. La aerolínea relativamente nueva, que comenzó hace unos dos años y medio y tiene su sede en Salt Lake City, Utah, planea ofrecer vuelos con base en Lansing tanto a Orlando como a Fort Myers, Florida.

Avelo Airlines is ending service to Orlando from Lansing Capital Region International Airport (LAN), Ingham, Michigan. The Houston, Texas-based company, which describes itself as an ultra-low-fare carrier, confirmed to the Lansing State Journal on Wednesday that it will end flights to and from Capital Region International Airport.

In 2022, Avelo began offering two weekly flights to Orlando from Lansing during the colder weather months, and due to the success of the Orlando route, Fort Meyers was added in 3Q2023. At the time, Nicole Noll-Williams, the airport’s president and CEO, said Orlando was the Lansing region’s No. 1 destination. Now, according to its updated flight schedule through January 2025, Lansing is not included.

Avelo Airlines is also ending service to other cities, including Redding, California. Five more cities are expected to be canceled: Kalamazoo, Michigan; Dubuque, Iowa; Mosinee, Wisconsin; Broome County, New York; and Brownsville, Texas. Lack of profitability was behind the decision, said Jim Olson, Chief Brand and Communications Officer for Avelo Airlines. “Unfortunately, the LAN-MCO route was not profitable and we do not expect it to be within a reasonable time horizon. Every route that Avelo flies must be profitable or be on a trend line toward that goal. Before committing to a new route, we conduct a thorough analysis of the available and relevant data. In most cases, the routes we introduce are successful and we continue to operate them. However, with those that are not, we must make the difficult decision to exit them”, Jim Olson said.

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor called the news tremendously disappointing. «We have a great airport located right in the center of the state that is easy to get to, easy to use, and convenient for many. It’s unfortunate that Avelo was not able to get here or the other cities where they cut service. Lansing continues to offer many other daily flights and I have faith that our airport leadership will do everything possible to seek out airlines that offer direct flights and provide the best options for the capital area», Andy Schor said.

Last month, Apple Vacations said it would return to Capital Region International Airport with flights starting in January of next year to several tropical locations. Apple has offered flights at the airport since 2010. Flights escaping the cold weather begin Jan. 25 and run through April 9, according to a statement from the airport. Planned routes include nonstop flights from Lansing to Cancun, Mexico; Lansing to Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic; and Lansing to Montego Bay, Jamaica.

The airport also has scheduled service from Delta and American Airlines. In March 2024, Breeze Airlines said it would begin offering service to Orlando and Fort Myers, Florida, in October of this year. The relatively new airline, which started about two and a half years ago and is based in Salt Lake City, Utah, plans to offer Lansing-based flights to both Orlando and Fort Myers, Florida.
