Malindo Air (Batik Air Malaysia) efectuó el primer vuelo comercial del Boeing 737 -8 MAX en el mundo
El primer vuelo comercial del Boeing 737-8 MAX, el más nuevo avión de la nueva generación de pasillo único del fabricante estadunidense efectuó el primer despegue con la compañía Batik Air Malaysia. La aerolínea malaya se convirtió en el cliente de lanzamiento del modelo después que Southwest y Norwegian han aplazado la entrega de las aeronaves como primeros clientes de lanzamiento.
El avión realizó su vuelo inaugural OD803/804 en la ruta Kuala Lumpur – Singapur – Kuala Lumpur. El avión despegó a las 11:07 (GMT+8) del Aeropuerto Internacional de Kuala Lumpur, aterrizando en Singapur 47 minutos más tarde. De regreso, el avión despegó del Aeropuerto Changi a las 13:36, aterrizando en Kuala Lumpur tras 43 minutos de vuelo.
El Boeing 737-8 MAX posee matrícula 9M-LRC, configurado con 180 asientos en clase única (Y) y ostenta los nuevos colores y nombre de la aerolínea, que pasará a llamarse Batik Air Malaysia. La estrategia del Lion Air Group es enfocar las operaciones de Batik Air Malaysia en el mercado internacional bajo el nombre Batik Air, que realiza vuelos domésticos en Indonesia.

Durante la cerimonia de entrega del avión el pasado martes, Chandran Rama Muthy, Director Ejecutivo de Malindo Air, comentó:
«Estamos encantados de ser la primera aerolínea del mundo en recibir y operar el 737 MAX 8. La flota de Boeing 737 Next Generation ha servido a Malindo en su crecimiento y creemos que el 737 MAX se convertirá en una pieza central para nuestra flota”.
El nombre Malindo se deriva de los nombres Malasia e Indonesia, y significa un pacto de cooperación entre los dos países. Malindo Air está atravesando un proceso de renovación de marca, aunque el ejercicio de renovación de marca se había puesto en suspenso ya que se podía ver en un avión B737-800 recién entregado (9M-LNZ), que anteriormente incorporaban librea de «Batik Air Malasia», sustituido por Malindo logotipo en su lugar. Aun así, «Batik Malaysia», que se centrará en rutas internacionales, mientras que Batik Air sirve rutas nacionales en Indonesia.
La joven aerolínea, fundada en 2013, actualmente cuenta con una flota de dieciséis ATR 72 y veintiseis Boeing 737 Next Generation. Pronto, espera recibir su primer avión de fuselaje ancho, el Airbus A330, con el que planea volar a Arabia Saudita, Australia y Japón.

The name Malindo is derived from the names of Malaysia and Indonesia, and means a cooperation pact between the two countries.
