Flybondi cancellations continue
Airline canceled 71 scheduled flights
After several months of suspensions and delays, the airline Flybondi is going through one of its worst operational crises since its launch. Despite pressure from the Government, the low-cost company was unable to avoid a new wave of cancellations that will affect its passengers during the end-of-year holidays. Some 13,000 passengers face changes to their scheduled flights between December 24 and 31, 2024. The low-cost company was ordered by the ANAC agency to present a plan to regularize its operations. Previously, the Ministry of Transportation ordered the airline not to offer services that it cannot guarantee.
The scheduling crisis situation revealed by a document presented to the National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC), puts Flybondi back in the spotlight after months of questions about its lack of operational capacity.
The routes and schedules of the cancelled flights where the impact is greatest are those in Aeroparque, Ezeiza and Mendoza, which are the most affected users. Despite this, Flybondi opted to carry out massive rescheduling without eliminating the cancellations, which generated criticism from various sectors linked to tourism. The decision set off alarm bells in key destinations for the tourism industry, such as Bariloche.
Representatives of the Chambers of Tourism, Commerce and Industry and the Hotel and Gastronomic Business Association issued a statement expressing their deep concern about the repeated cancellations of flights to and from that region.
The consequences not only affect passengers but also the economic development of tourist areas, especially on dates of high demand.
Flybondi has explained that the cancellations and delays are due to operational problems related to the availability of its fleet and that the latest measures have to do, precisely, with the request for the plan requested by the ANAC.
Lucía Ginzo, Chief Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Officer of Flybondi, stated that the recent rescheduling is part of the operational plan presented to the authorities and that it seeks to stabilize the situation. The affected flights were not unexpected cancellations, but preventive adjustments made in advance. However, this explanation has not managed to dispel criticism or discontent among passengers and affected sectors.
The history of operational difficulties had led ANAC to issue three infraction reports against Flybondi, pointing out repeated breaches of commercial aviation sector regulations, although no fines were applied. One of the most controversial episodes in recent weeks was Flybondi’s use of a maintenance workshop suspended by ANAC at Ezeiza International Airport.
The suspension, in force since October 4, 2024, was not immediately complied with by the airline, which carried out maintenance work on three of its aircraft despite the sanction. This failure forced the regulatory body to issue a new notice on 10/24. The maintenance workshop was rehabilitated on November 14, 2024, but on the condition that Flybondi recertify the aircraft repaired during the suspension period. In addition, ANAC plans to carry out additional inspections to verify compliance with current regulations.
Flybondi announced in November 2024 the expansion of its fleet, starting with the incorporation of Airbus A320ceo aircraft to alleviate the shortage of available aircraft, which would allow it to increase its seat capacity starting with the 2024-2025 northern summer season.

Aerolíneas receive US$ 64 million in subsidies in 2024
Airline received half the contributions it received in 2023
In the first year of Javier Milei’s administration, subsidies to Aerolíneas Argentinas fell to the lowest level since its nationalization in 2008. During 2024, the Government allocated US$ 64.2 million to the airline, which represents a 50% reduction compared to US$ 136 million in 2023, under the Alberto Fernández administration. This figure contrasts even more with the years of Kirchnerism, when, in 2012, Aerolíneas reached a peak of US$ 904 million in subsidies.
In 2012, the airline received US$ 904 million, while in 2013 it was US$ 704 million, and in 2014, US$ 619 million. In 2015, the last year of that administration, US$ 553 million Dollars were allocated. Under Mauricio Macri’s government, spending was drastically reduced, falling to US$ 304 million in 2016 and US$ 181 million in 2017. However, subsidies rose again in 2018 and 2019, reaching US$ 284 and US$ 490 million Dollars, respectively. During the Fernández administration, spending remained high, especially during the pandemic. In 2020, US$ 638 million Dollars were allocated, and in 2021, US$ 669 million. Starting in 2022, the budget began to shrink again, reaching US$ 486 million that year and falling to US$136 million in 2023.
From 2012 to 2023, the State allocated US$ 6 billion to Aerolíneas Argentinas under the orbit of La Cámpora. Currently, it receives almost fifteen times less funds than during the time of Cristina Kirchner.
The adjustment policy also impacted the company’s staff, which decreased by 1,341 positions during the last year, leaving the airline with 10,602 employees. According to figures from the Ministry of Finance, Aerolíneas’ operating deficit was significantly reduced, from US$ 513 million in 2023 to US$ 319 million in 2024. However, the company maintains that its real loss, adjusted for inflation, is US$ 83.2 million.
The funds transferred to Aerolíneas were limited to a single disbursement in the first half of the year, with the aim of the company operating throughout the fiscal year with its own resources from ticket sales. According to surveys, support for privatization has grown significantly from 10% to 80% following the union conflicts.

According to a decree published in the Official Gazette, the Government of Javier Milei again postponed its privatization plan, but not because it had reconsidered the underlying strategy of divesting itself of numerous state-owned companies, but because the required legal and administrative procedures were not completed. The official scheme provides that state-owned companies, before being privatized, be transformed into Public Limited Companies, a process for which the deadlines were extended by another two months.
In the original plan of the Government of La Libertad Avanza it was foreseen that in the first six months of management these legal and technical requirements would be fulfilled to advance with the privatization plan, but at the end of the first semester the deadline was extended until the end of the year 2024, being extended again by two months this week.
«The seriousness of the situation requires its extension for a period of sixty (60) days in order to have sufficient time to implement what is established in Section 2) of Article 77, in Section 1) paragraph b) of Article 83, and in Article 88 of the General Law of Companies No. 19,550 (T.O. 1984) and its amendments», states Decree No. 1120/2024.
After moving forward with the conversion of state-owned companies into corporations, the Executive Branch may directly put them up for sale through a bidding process, for which it needs the approval of Congress, launch an initial public offering to take the shares of the companies in question to the capital market, transfer part of the companies to their workers, as had been proposed for the case of Aerolíneas Argentinas, or directly close them and put their land up for sale through the State Property Administration Agency (AABE).

The Boeing Commercial Market Outlook report forecasts that European and Central Asian operators will receive nearly 7,900 single-aisle airplanes over the next twenty years.
“When considered within the scope of Boeing’s National Aerospace Initiative launched with the Turkish government in 2017, our order will also open new doors and create production and export opportunities for both Turkish manufacturers and the wider aviation industry”, said Güliz Öztürk.
The purchase of 100 737-10 MAX aircraft by Pegasus Airlines will bring total orders for the 737 MAX variant to more than 1,200 aircraft.

Air Canada transfers Boeing 737 MAX
Air Canada to transfer Boeing 737 MAX fleet to Air Canada Rouge
Air Canada has announced the transfer of its entire fleet of 41 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to its subsidiary Air Canada Rouge, in a move that will allow the leisure airline to strengthen its market position in North America, the Caribbean, and Central America. The addition of the Boeing 737-8 MAX to Rouge’s fleet improves fuel efficiency, reduces operating costs, and will facilitate training and maintenance, optimizing Rouge’s operations. The transfer allows Rouge to increase its capacity on tourist routes and compete more effectively in high-demand markets.
Air Canada has announced a major reorganization of its fleet, which will involve the transfer of its entire fleet of 41 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to its low-cost subsidiary, Air Canada Rouge. This restructuring, which was first discussed in the last investor update call on December 17, 2024, is a response to the growing demand for leisure flights and the need to optimize the operation of airlines within the group.
Air Canada Rouge was founded in 2012 as a low-cost airline intended to operate primarily leisure flights. With a fleet composed mostly of Airbus A320 family aircraft, Rouge operates routes to destinations in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, primarily from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). The airline currently has 39 aircraft, including A319 (18), A320 (5) and A321 (16). However, in an effort to improve its efficiency and reduce operating costs, Air Canada has decided to transfer its entire Boeing 737 MAX fleet to Rouge, which includes 41 aircraft already in service, plus 12 additional units that are scheduled to be delivered in the medium term.
The transfer of the 737 MAX fleet to Air Canada Rouge represents a number of operational advantages for both the parent airline and its subsidiary. The 737-8 MAX is a highly fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft, which will allow Rouge to reduce its operating costs on short- and medium-haul routes, improving its competitiveness against other low-cost carriers. In addition, the addition of aircraft with the same configuration provides Rouge’s fleet with greater uniformity and facilitates the training of flight and maintenance personnel. This consolidation also strengthens Air Canada’s position as a market leader in Canada, as it allows the airline to maintain a more strategic focus on its long-haul international flight operations, while Rouge concentrates on the growing demand for tourist routes. The synergy between the two airlines’ operations could also result in an improvement in the group’s overall profitability.
Air Canada Rouge faces a number of challenges and opportunities in the fleet transition. First, adapting to the Boeing 737-8 MAX fleet could require a significant initial investment, both in training its crew and modifying its maintenance bases. However, in the long term, the more modern and fuel-efficient fleet of aircraft could offer Rouge a significant competitive advantage, especially on routes where passenger demand has increased due to the post-pandemic recovery of tourism. The integration of higher-capacity aircraft could allow Rouge to offer more seats on its flights and expand its presence in key markets, especially those with high demand, such as tourist destinations in the Caribbean region. The transition from the 737 MAX may also improve the passenger experience, as the 737 MAX is known for its comfort features, such as a more spacious cabin layout and the highest efficiency in aircraft in its class.

Criminal complaint for irregularities in previous management Aerolíneas
A Provincial Deputy of Republicanos Unidos has filed a complaint against the former President of Aerolíneas Argentinas, Pablo Ceriani, and the union representative, Ricardo Cirielli, former head of the Association of Aeronautical Technical Personnel (APTA) for the alleged crimes of concealment and public intimidation. The judicial presentation, signed by the Buenos Aires Deputy, Sebastián Pascual; and the leader Sebastián Pedrozo, highlights that Pablo Ceriani and Ricardo Cirielli would be involved in practices that would have sought to silence complaints about serious irregularities in the maintenance of Aerolíneas Argentinas aircraft.
The text states that, in 2020, a group of aeronautical technicians warned the authorities about problems in the maintenance of the aircraft, linking these events to incidents that, according to the complaint, could have led to tragedies. The complainants allegedly “suffered reprisals that included dismissals, threats, and workplace harassment”, noting that their dismissal was used as a coercive message to discourage future complaints to the company.
According to the text, the reported actions also involve the APTA union, headed by Cirielli, who allegedly collaborated in the dissemination of the dismissals in order to “instill fear among workers”, It also states that APTA allegedly carried out maneuvers to invalidate the union privileges of one of the workers, thus allowing his dismissal.
Among the recent events mentioned in the complaint is the emergency landing of an Aerolíneas Argentinas flight in February 2024, an event that, according to the complainants, “is related to the deficiencies in aircraft maintenance previously noted”.
This and other recent incidents would have motivated the complaint for concealment against Pablo Ceriani and Ricardo Cirielli, according to the Apolo Foundation, both would have acted to «prevent the investigation of irregularities and silence those who reported them».
Deputy Sebartián Pascual summarized that «in a context of growing public concern for air safety, an exhaustive investigation is required to clarify the reported events and determine responsibilities in this chain of decisions and actions that, allegedly, sought to hide serious operational failures in Aerolíneas Argentinas».

Government monitors Flybondi
Scrutiny control airline low cost Argentina
The Government of Argentina has established greater control over the Flybondi budget airline due to repeated programming problems and technical difficulties in several aircraft. The ANAC, control agency, would not finally sanction with removal of routes, but will control its plan to reduce the cancellations accumulated in ESWTE last period.
Authorities of the Ministry of Transport listened to the details of the proposal that the company had presented on Friday 13/12 and resolved to continue monitoring the progress to significantly reduce cancellations. The company would have normalized in recent days the income flow of parts for rented aircraft, which would result in a shorter repair time.
The Ministry of Transportation, after evaluating the proposal presented by the airline could receive sanctions from the National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC) for the 384 flights canceled in November 2024.
In October 2024, the ANAC was labeled three minutes for 23 canceled flights and at least three others for using the maintenance workshop they have at the Minister Pistarini International Airport, while being suspended. According to the minutes, the ANAC had temporarily suspended the Flybondi workshop in Ezeiza on 04/10 and 10/10 urged the company to comply with the suspension, because it had detected maintenance actions on different aircraft of the firm (LV aircraft -KDR, LV-KDQ, and LV-KEF) made in the place. On the other hand, after October 24, 2024, it was also found that he continued carrying out maintenance tasks in the same workshop on LV-KJD, LV-KDR, LV-KCE, LV-KHO, LV-KDQ, LV, LV, LV -KJE, LV-KJF, LV-KEF, LV-KAH, and LV-KEG, as opposed to the temporal suspension by the ANAC. The ANAC has confirmed what happened, but they said that operational security was not at risk, because the suspension was for issues such as errors in maintenance records, general disorder in deposits, lack of traceability of parts and aeronautical material, and so on. In addition, according to the agency, he ordered the company to re-certify the planes that were reviewed in Ezeiza’s workshop in other enabled workshops.
On November 9, 2024, the ANAC inspected the Flybondi LV-K-K-Keh registration and detected that the burlete of the control cabin was out of norm. According to the manufacturer, the aircraft had to be removed from service, but Flybondi continued to use it, putting operational security at risk. ANAC issued a priority notification on 11/26 demanding reparation before the next flight. An anonymous source warned about the risk of explosive decompression, similar to an incident that occurred on a British Airways flight in the 90s, where the windshield came off, partially sucking the pilot out. The inspection on the Flybondi plane detected a light of 0.23 inches in the burlete, exceeding the maximum tolerance of 0.15 inches.
Flybondi faces an operational crisis due to the amount of canceled flights, irregularities in his Ezeiza workshop, and Anac warnings. The airline has rented aircraft with foreign registration and crew to cover its operations, but new criticisms emerged. Passengers reported broken seats and deficiencies in the cabin of the rented aircraft. These irregularities generate doubts about Flybondi’s ability to guarantee operational security, both in their own and rented planes
The airline replied: “For Flybondi it is absolutely necessary and priority to note that this was not related to operational safety. The audits carried out by the controlling body (ANAC) in the workshop did not find shortcomings in the maintenance tasks carried out in the airplanes nor did their condition for the aircraft had observations”.
The suspension finally rose on November 14, 2024, but the ANAC plans to make a new inspection to verify compliance with ordered corrective actions.
Massive cancellations The low cost Flybondi airline faces a complicated panorama due to operational problems that have generated strong users’ claims. In December 2024, the company rescheduled 45% of its flights, while in November 2024 it canceled 68% of its services, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Among the most frequent complaints are canceled flights at the last moment, lack of reprogramming and reimbursements, and poor attention to resolve complications. In this context, the ANAC intervened and issued three minutes of infraction after registering in just 48 hours 70 suspended flights.
According to Flybondi, its fleet is composed of fifteen (15) Boeing 737-800 aircraft, but currently only eleven are found, with an average of 14 hours of daily service. However, the airline still failed to explain how it will face the high demand for the coming months or how it will solve the cancellations that impacted 20% of its operations.
For its part, the airline argues that the failures are due to technical problems, delays in the delivery of spare parts that are retained in Customs for up to three days, and delays in payments for the rental of airplanes. However, users denounce that the company does not take care of the inconveniences, while bad service and recurring cancellations put their competitiveness at risk against other companies in the sector.
“The cancellations and reprogramming of November were due to operational reasons due to fleet availability. […] The industry supply chain became complex due delay in the income of spare parts. Then any operational theme, totally common in the industry, impacts the programming of the day”, they explained from Flybondi.
Flybondi is one of the companies benefiting from the open skies policy of the administration of Javier Milei when authorized with more routes, foreign crew, positions in the Aeroparque to spend the night, and deregulation of the ramp service, for example. But nothing seems, for now, to have an improvement in its performance.
