Transformación low cost en Europa

AW | 2017 10 14 21:47 | AIRLINES MARKET

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

The transformation of the low cost airlines in Europe

The bankruptcy of the airlines Air Berlin or Monarch Airlines are signs of the swings of the market of low cost in Europe

airberlin-silo

Low margins, high competition and setbacks affect the entire commercial aviation market in the world, and the European sector is no exception. Airlines with fewer resources are driven by a highly competitive market and survival is more difficult to fly.

Market consolidations, mergers between companies, had been an option of market dominance, but the reality today is that in most cases situations are forced by economic crises of airlines becoming unable to continue flying, as a result of aerial asphyxiation . The asphyxiation effect is a market of 500 million inhabitants, where it is difficult to have room for almost thirty low cost airlines. «In the end what is happening in Europe is what the US has already experienced: a market that concentrates because only the strongest or those who do it very well can survive in the long term,» explains EADA business school professor , Athina Sismanidou.

The last two cases of low cost airlines that have ceased or will cease their activity are not from firms with few aircraft as it had in recent years but from major companies. Air Berlin with a flotilla of 144 aircraft will cease its activity at the end of the month. Monarch Airlines with 35 aircraft, announced the cessation of operations on October 2, 2017. Is there a highly saturated European market?

AW-70080077.png

Concentration of the European air market

«In the United States, the first three airlines concentrate 90% of the market, in Europe there are several airlines in each country, and there are important economic reasons: in recent years oil has dropped a lot , and airlines have opted to grow and grow. That has increased demand, caused a price war and tightened the treasuries. There have been problems in some important markets for some firms (Turkey, North Africa), these have were very touched», adds Professor Athina Sismanidou.

The price war, moreover, has affected the operating margins, which are the ones that mark the good part of the future of the companies. «Or you have a lot of balance, like Ryanair, that has even been able to drive thousands of cancellations, or you run the risk of ending up like Monarch Airlines. Many airlines even in the boom years or with oil at lows had losses is not sustainable», adds Athina Sismanidou.

The consolidation of the European market has its peculiarities. On one hand, other sources in the sector recall, «however much you want to buy, the European Commission can stop operations for reasons of competition.» On the other, there is another alternative to consolidation: alliances, shared codes, and so on.

Over the next few months and years, hundreds of new aircraft will join the fleets of European low-cost airlines, which will increase the number of routes and flights and thus intensify the commercial war. That may end up hurting more low-cost airlines, but also big companies. Because, in fact, consolidation affects all types of airlines. A \ W

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Clear skies for sales to Iran

Resultado de imagen para iran map pngTrump Administration would not impose sanctions on Iran and both Boeing and Airbus could sell aircraft to the Islamic Republic of Iran

President Donald Trump’s decision not to impose sanctions on Iran is good news for Boeing. Boeing and Airbus have announced agreements with Iranian airlines that, if finalized, could cover about 300 aircraft valued at $ 40 billion.

Although business values are not important compared to the permanent orders in both companies, they represent an entrance to this country that no manufacturer would want to lose ground. Both Airbus and Boeing have a backlog of orders that would take years to partner with.

But the obstacles are not simply circumvented by the elimination of sanctions against Iran, the obstacles remain because airlines could have difficulty financing their orders and US policy could play a decisive role if Congress supported with the endorsement of lines airports in Iran. A \ W

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Kobe Steel-Boeing-Mitsubishi scandal

The Kobe Steel scandal traps aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Mitsubishi

The aerospace giant Boeing has been trapped by the aftermath of Kobe Steel‘s revelation that it falsified manufacturing documents on its metal products.

The Kobe Steel scandal has rocked corporate Japan and raised concerns throughout the global supply chain in the aerospace sector as well as in the automotive and rail industry.

Aluminum parts made from counterfeit data are now being flown on Boeing aircraft today and were widely used in all of the company’s commercial products, according to a person briefed on the impact on the aircraft manufacturer.

The material is unlikely to cause safety problems, the person added. But the problem presents a significant headache for the aircraft manufacturer, who must take into account all suspect aluminum and ensure that each component complies with regulatory standards.

Boeing reported that it was notified of problems with the Japanese metal company. Boeing «has been working closely and continuously with our suppliers to ensure timely and appropriate action, including thorough inspections and inspections throughout our supply chain,» a spokesman said in a statement. «Nothing in our review so far leads us to conclude that this problem poses a security concern,» Boeing said.

Kobe Steel has admitted that it manufactured data related to the quality and strength of aluminum and copper used in a range of products in hundreds of companies, from cars to defense equipment and aircraft. The company said it was conducting extensive research on its initial findings. Suspicious aluminum has been used to make parts from Japanese manufacturers Mitsubishi, Kawasaki and Subaru, which make large structural portions of Boeing aircraft, as well as Nabtesco, which supplies the aircraft manufacturer with mechanical components called actuators that move the controls flight of the airplane.

A Subaru spokesman said: «We are still investigating this situation with our supplier base to see which parts contain this steel and to see if there is any risk posed.» Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Nabtesco did not immediately respond to requests for comments.

Kobe Steel is required to submit data to substantiate the material properties of the parts it manufactures for the companies supplying parts to the Boeing plants. Some of the material you are building is reserved for testing. In many cases, the data collected in the tests did not pass the resistance tests and were not taken into account, the person informed about the findings of Boeing.

Kobe said in a report published on Friday that «a part of the inspection articles was not made, and inspection data were rewritten» in their aluminum products. The aluminum parts in question were manufactured between September 2016 and August 2017, but Boeing and its suppliers are looking further back to determine the extent of the impact.

Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation, maker of the new Mitsubishi Regional Jet, said that the affected parts are used on the test aircraft it is flying on today. Standard production aircraft will not be delivered until 2020.

A spokesman for Airbus, a rival of Boeing, said it does not use Kobe aluminum in its planes, but parts of the undercarriage in its new A350 XWB are forged in Kobe titanium. Kobe also supplies non-aluminum parts for engines that fly on many Airbus aircraft. Kobe has not indicated that titanium is part of his investigation of counterfeit data. A\W
