New working conditions in Ryanair
With the new working conditions for Ryanair pilots
In the middle of the strike calls in Spain and in Britain, the announcement this Friday, August 9, 2019 of a Ryanair pilots strike in Ireland went unnoticed. Ryanair on Monday unloaded his artillery uncovering a thousand details of his relationship with the pilots, in a rare act. First, the airline accuses them of calling a strike with only 25% of the support, because the Forsa union has only half of its affiliates in Ryanair and of them only 60% participated in the voting for unemployment, which results in a very low final follow-up.
Since 2018 a dialogue process has begun that has resulted in agreements in the form of seniority, promotions and a 20% increase in the salary of those pilots who had not had this increase in 2018, also now have five-day work shifts and four consecutive rest.
Ryanair accuses Forsa of not explaining what salary increase they ask for when 20% has been granted and the pilot casualties in Ryanair are now zero because they are better paid than in Norwegian Air and Jet2. Ryanair indicates that right now, a senior pilot charges 200 thousand euros per year working five days and four days off. According to the company, this is 20% more than a Norwegian Air pilot.
Ryanair’s statements are very clearly directed against union leader Kieran Mulvey, whom they accuse of their utter inopportunity in their call. The publication of this data and the transparency with which Ryanair ventilates its tensions contrasts with the attitude of Peter Bellew, the Director of Operations. Bellew kept the peace in Ryanair before leaving for Malaysia. When he left, the conflict between pilots and the company was opened and published in the media. Upon his return, tempers calmed down but now Bellew has no role whatsoever since his departure for Easyjet was announced.
Background claims
At the bottom of the matter is the claim of the pilots and cabin crew who demand job stability and a decentralization of the administration. For example, it is to be able to go to the doctor and be able to be sick in Spain without having to send papers and ask for leave in Ireland, in addition to being able to opt for a decent pension in Spain.
World high demand for Boeing 737 NG
The growing demand for Boeing’s oldest aircraft is benefiting airline leasing companies such as Ireland-based AerCap Holdings. During its conference call on second-quarter earnings, the company revealed that almost all of its planes were leased to the airlines. Another aircraft leasing company based in Ireland, Fly Leasing, expressed similar comments. The CEO of Fly Leasing, Colm Barrington, revealed that the company had leased all of its 737-800 planes and had no more planes to offer. In the email, he wrote: «According to airline inquiries, we are seeing a strong demand for B737-800 in particular, which is likely to be reflected in higher re-lease rates for the type this year», Colm Barrington reported.
