AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Venezuela crisis affects airports

The reduction in the number of airline flights in 2013 was 352 flights available in international airlines each week, in August 2017 the number of frequencies dropped to 121 daily flights

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), informed by the regional vice president of the Americas, Peter Cerdá, a report issued at the end of July 2017, delivered a lapidary balance of the sector in Venezuela. «Unfortunately, (the country) is disconnecting itself from the world in terms of air connectivity,» he warned. «The Venezuelan government is not meeting the necessary requirements for this to happen (robust air connectivity), such as the retention of US $ 3.8 billion owned by airlines or a fuel sales system that harms international airlines in Venezuela», said Cerdá.

A bleak picture that has only worsened during the administration of President Nicolas Maduro, who in May 2014 warned airlines: «They have no excuse for airlines to reduce their flights to Venezuela. Airline to reduce, I will take severe measures. Airline that leaves the country, does not return while we are government».

A recent study published by the digital magazine Prodavinci reveals the drastic drop in the number of international airlines operating in Venezuela and the deficit of available seats and direct routes to go to another country has been a palpable warning. This resulted in the departure of several foreign companies. The Prodavinci report says that 14 of 31 international airlines have withdrawn from Venezuela since 2013. More than 70% attributed the decision to not being able to repatriate profits and the economic crisis.

The exodus of international airlines began in 2014 when oil prices, a source of 96% of the country’s currencies, began to collapse. This caused, says France Presse, a drought of dollars that the government monopolizes since 2003 through a control of changes and the accumulation of debts with the airlines, according to the IATA.

Between 2014 and 2015 Air Canada, Aeroméxico, Alitalia, Lan (Chile), Tam (Brazil), Tiara (Aruba) and Gol (Brazil) left the country; in 2016 the American Dynamic and the German Lufthansa; and this year United, Delta (United States) and Avianca.

Humberto Figuera, president of the Association of Venezuelan Airlines (ALAV), summarizes the reasons for the exodus of international airlines. «The airlines have not been able to repatriate their earnings that are about US $ 3.8 billion. That affects to a greater extent those who have less financial muscle«. In addition, «many airlines claim that their retirement is due to the conditions of insecurity in the airport of Maiquetía and the country.»

Likewise, Figuera explains that «the costs of operating to Venezuela are high, as airlines must make investments in security to ensure that their aircraft are not used to transport some type of unauthorized substance.» Finally, the director of the ALAV states that «there is a significant reduction of passengers because the tickets are sold in foreign currency.» Unable to repatriate their profits, most airlines stopped selling tickets in bolivars in 2016, according to an industry source, and only offer online for dollar payments.

According to the Prodavinci report, the shortage of available flights and seats is increasing. For example, in December 2013 there were 352 flights available in international airlines each week. The frequency dropped to 121 in August 2017.

In the same period, the weekly supply of seats from Venezuela to international destinations in foreign airlines went from 57,105 to 19,377 today. If these figures are translated at rates, then it can be said that while in 2013 Venezuela offered 192 seats on international flights per 100,000 inhabitants, in 2017 it fell to just 72 seats per 100,000 inhabitants.

The Prodavinci report also compared the rate of seats offered by Venezuela with other countries in the region. Citing figures from the World Bank and the site Flightradar24.com, the report points out that in the week between August 16 and 22, Caracas’s Maiquetia Simón Bolívar International Airport offered 94 seats per 100,000 inhabitants on international flights. A much lower rate than the airports of El Dorado in Bogotá (466.9) or Jorge Chávez in Lima (431.6).

According to the Cocuyo Effect website, on August 9, as nine flights left Maiquetia, 11 took off from Toussaint Louvertuve airport in Port-au-Prince and 19 from José Martí airport in Havana. A \ W

Debilitamiento beneficios aerolíneas EU

AW | 2017 09 18 18:57 | AIRLINES MARKET

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

US airlines weakening profits

Classic and low-cost US airlines push the generalized discount which generates a weakening of the benefits

Many of the major US airlines were facing a weakening of revenue conditions before the advent of post-hurricane effects Harvey and Irma hit the region.

Those storms are causing revenue estimates to decline, which is generating a low rate war. Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and Spirit Airlines are among the airlines that have issued downward revisions of their unit revenue forecast for 3Q2017, driven in part by what these companies regard as a generalized tariff discount.

American Airlines and United Airlines have been aggressively combining low fare rates and continue their commitment to match prices as a strategy to defend their hubs. At the same time, Spirit is evaluating its pricing strategy after focusing more on its performance management over the past nine months.

The result seems to be a lot of price spikes in the US market as the new price levels introduced by the three big airlines of the country’s global network take over and discount stores adjust to the new reality of the aggressive price equalization. Storm revenue successes, coupled with competitive price maneuvers, are tempering expectations as oil prices begin to rise. A \ W

Escasez combustible en Nueva Zelanda

AW | 2017 09 18 18:28 | AIRLINES / AIR TRAFFIC

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Fuel shortage in New Zealand

Resultado de imagen para New Zealand pngAirlines appear to be battling shortages of jet fuel at Auckland International Airport as flights are launched today

However, flights into and out of Sydney to the city have been canceled just as Air New Zealand says it is «extremely disappointed» by the incident that will affect approximately 2,000 passengers.

Resultado de imagen para Maori carving pngFuel shortages were caused after an oil pipeline running from Marsden Point was damaged in Ruakaka, Northland. Twenty-seven flights were hit over the weekend but the number was down today to 14. Air NZ’s chief of operations, Captain David Morgan, said today that it continues to suffer disruption following the temporary closure of the pipeline. The blackout is affecting all airlines operating in and out of Auckland airport and limiting the volume of aviation fuel capable of rising to 30 percent of normal use. It is estimated that around 2000 Air New Zealand customers will be affected by today’s flight cancellations as the airline works to consolidate passenger loads and minimize fuel use.

Some long distance services to and from Asia and North America were being refueled at some airports in the Pacific or Australia. The airlines have responded and put in mitigation and are refueling and using other measures, although the impact has been minimal on delays and cancellations.

The cancellation or delay of flights was a rather fluid situation and decisions were made by the airlines, not the airport, so passengers were advised to continue checking each airline’s website for updates. For this reason, you are requested to leave Auckland Airport to check the arrival and departure times of the airport for updates.

Tourism companies have been taking calls from travelers worried about the impact it will have on them, especially on the eve of school holidays in two weeks.

The government has offered to help oil companies struggling with the jet fuel crisis that threatens to disrupt the air travel from Auckland for up to two weeks.

All flights arriving in Auckland have been advised to carry enough extra fuel to leave again. Long-haul flights are being redirected to refueling stops at other international or New Zealand airports, as oil companies predict it could take 10-14 days to restore normal supplies. A \ W

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Horizon Air cancels routes due to lack of pilots

The shortage of pilots is a reality that many airlines face that often prevent their own expansion

Horizon Air says it can no longer fly to Colorado Springs from Seattle because it does not have enough riders. The airline canceled 6 percent of its flights in June due to its shortage of pilots, but this may be the first time a route has been abandoned because of it. Horizon says it faces a shortage of pilots for at least another year, according to a press release from Colorado Springs Airport. The statement quoted airline officials as saying that the shortage «is expected to continue for some time.»

Meanwhile, while Horizon is an affiliate of Alaska, the parent company is shifting part of its regional capacity to Skywest Airlines and essentially allowing the independent regional company to compete with its own company. Skywest flies 20 new Embraer E175 aircraft to Alaska and while Horizon has ordered 30 similar aircraft, it only has two in the air and recently delayed the delivery of six of the Brazilian passenger aircraft. Horizon mainly flies well used Q400 bombers. Skywest has ordered five more E175s to use on the Alaska routes and the Horizon pilot syndicate filed a lawsuit that disputed Horizon’s postponement of its E175 delivery. A \ W

Reestablecimiento vuelos Irak-Rusia

Un avión de Iraqi Airways

AW | 2017 09 17 20:22 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

The aviation authorities of Iraq and Russia had agreed to resume direct flights between Baghdad and Moscow in 2015. At that time the option of opening routes to Erbil in Iraq and St. Petersburg and Kazan in Russia was also handled.

Following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, the UN introduced sanctions against Baghdad in the aviation sector. The restrictions forced in particular the Russian Aeroflot and the Iraqi Iraqui Airways to suspend the direct flights between both countries. In addition, in May 2004, a year after the US invaded Iraq, the Russian Ministry of Transport cut off air traffic with Baghdad as insufficient level of flight safety to that «danger zone». A \ W

Tráfico aéreo mundial en 24h

AW | 2017 09 17 20:10 | AIR TRAFFIC

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

World-wide air traffic, visualized during 24 hours

NASA software lets you see global aircraft flight paths across continents

Air traffic management software developed by NASA in 2006 has included improvements, including the ability to visualize global aircraft flight paths across continents.

For this benefit, the FACET (Future Air Traffic Management Concepts Evaluation Tool) system receives data from the Official Airline Guide, which provides departure and arrival cities, and scheduled departure and arrival times. FACET then traces a Great Circle route between the linked cities and calculates where the aircraft will be at any given time.

«We have used this capability to study the impact of global aviation emissions on the environment,» said Kapil Sheth, an aerospace engineer at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California.

FACET is playing looking ahead, a role in NASA’s work to develop and demonstrate a concept for the next generation of air traffic management functionality in the United States when it comes to more efficiently planning the route and arrival phases of a flight.

The concept, known as Airspace Technology Demonstration 3, aims to bring together new terrestrial and cabin systems capable of anticipating bad weather or congested air traffic and proposing the most effective way to avoid delays, all in real time and in a way that rationalizes operations for both airlines and air traffic managers.

The ground component is now being tested at the American Airlines Integrated Operations Center in Fort Worth, TX. The cabin-based component is scheduled to be tested aboard a trio of Alaska Airlines aircraft later this year. A \ W
