Boeing / Etihad Airways alianza pruebas innovaciones ecoDemonstrator

Boeing perspectivas nuevas estrategias

AW | 2020 07 17 16:52 | INDUSTRY

The Boeing Company necesita desarrollar estrategia hacia el futuro

Programa Partnering for Success (PFS)

Boeing prospects new strategies

The Boeing Company needs to develop a strategy for the future

In March 2019, The Boeing Company was on top of the world, with an eight-year backlog and a market capitalization of US$ 240 billion. Currently, following the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, it is structurally disadvantaged against Airbus Group, with its share price declining as it deals with the worst crisis of the commercial aviation era. Some observers begin to doubt that he could delay his end of the plane’s production duopoly.

Aerospace company CEO Dave Calhoun is just 21 months past his mandatory retirement age, and his honeymoon as a new leader is running out. Will you be a transition leader or risk repositioning the company for long-term success? I believe you can be a transformative leader by following a bold five-point strategy that will shape Boeing’s new strategies.

Repositioning

Boeing’s product positioning issues are well known and should be addressed as soon as possible despite the COVID-19 crisis. The company’s top priority is, of course, the recertification of the Boeing 737 MAX. Soon after, you must launch a white sheet program to address your competitiveness issue against the Airbus A321NEO. This will boost the morale of Boeing stakeholders representing employees, customers and suppliers, and will indicate that it wants to overcome the 737 MAX disaster, regain industry leadership and invest in promising new digital design and production technologies.

Vertical integration strategy

Boeing went too far in outsourcing on the Boeing 787, and now it appears that it is acquiring too many resources. Some vertical integration initiatives make sense, including interiors, composite wings, and avionics, but several others are marginal. Can Boeing, for example, really create lasting customer value in auxiliary power units through its joint venture with Safran? The timing of this move is ironic given the fact that this could be the latest generation of aircraft using APU (Auxiliary Power Unit). It is on its way to converting variable costs into fixed costs, which does not bode well for a prolonged recession in the industry.

Airbus recognized this reality by recently abandoning its A320NEO gondola vertical integration initiative and delivering the package to Collins Aerospace. The funds used for wrong vertical integration movements would be better used for the next commercial or military development with a sixth generation fighter.

Partnering for Success Program (PFS)

One of the company’s biggest mistakes in the last decade has been the Partnering for Success Program (PFS), which places its suppliers, responsible for 65-70% of its cost structure, in an unsustainable position of obtaining profit margins. inadequate, reducing your ability to invest in the future. This does not mean that Boeing abandons its pressure on suppliers to improve productivity, delivery and quality; Nor does it mean that you shouldn’t try to increase aftermarket royalties. Upon completion of PFS, Boeing could change the payment terms of its suppliers from 90 to 60 days to inject the necessary working capital and improve supplier viability in the COVID-19 crisis. You could also review your draconian termination for convenience clauses and intellectual property claims. Nothing would do more to restore supplier confidence than Boeing burying PFS. The timing is perfect.

Service revenues

The unrealistic goal of US$ 50 billion in service revenue. It’s an arbitrary target, and there isn’t enough white space maintenance, repair, and overhaul for the target to be sustainable, given Boeing’s current service revenue of US$ 18.4 billion. It contributes to mistrust of suppliers and distracts from the core mission of developing, producing and supporting large aircraft. Boeing has yet to pursue growth in services, but in a measured manner and in areas where it creates genuine customer value, including parts distribution, training, digital services, military maintenance and modifications. Otherwise, you are bound to make major mistakes, including bad acquisitions or the launch of unprofitable services.

Board of Directors Restructuring

Most current board members approved decisions that led to Boeing’s decline and the pursuit of financial engineering rather than long-term competitiveness. The 737 MAX crisis shows that the board had a lot of political influence and little technical experience. Boeing has begun addressing some of these shortcomings with the appointment of three new directors since 2019. It would be good to continue cleaning the house to create a credible counterweight for the CEO and the wisdom to guide him back to aircraft parity.

This five-point strategy could probably influence quotes in the financial market. But that’s precisely the point at hand for too long, Boeing looked away from the ball to chase inflation of stock prices. CEO Dave Calhoun has a golden opportunity to restart and revitalize Boeing in its remaining 21 months and create a legacy as one of its most important leaders.

Airbus US cambia estrategia

AW | 2020 07 16 15:08 | INDUSTRY / AEROSPACE

Airbus US changes strategy

Airbus turns commercial strategy in the United States

Airbus US is changing course after decades of trying to enter the United States military aircraft market, far from selling large platforms to the Pentagon. With a new strategy that prioritizes the sale of sensors, data, space and intelligence capabilities available to buyers from the United States Government.

During a discussion on Wednesday 15/07 with reporters about the new direction for the business, Chris Emerson, the new Executive Director of the Airbus US Space and Defense Division and former President of Airbus Helicopters, said he wanted to shift the company’s focus away. in the U.S. of the company’s main fixed-wing platforms that are bread and butter in Europe. Builder Airbus US hopes to expand the company’s presence in the growing intelligence and space markets, particularly with low-cost satellites such as those created by its joint venture One Web, geospatial imaging and intelligence, and space-based sensors. «We know that the Air Force needs an A400M, but I can spend 10 years trying to convince the Air Force and all politicians that they should buy an A400M. And finally they will buy C-130. So let me focus this energy, this great leadership team, on achieving something tangible today that the customer really needs. Yes, it is not traditional for Airbus, but it will add value and we will have a better base if one day my successor. You know, I want to be a great platform competitor. At least we would have built up trust and shown that we could really meet the requirements that are placed on it”, said Chris Emerson.

Lockheed is currently leading interactions with the United States Army in air refueling. Although Airbus is a giant in the international military and commercial aerospace market, it has always struggled to find its place among America’s top defense contractors. As major aircraft manufacturers. He lost the famous KC-X contract with Boeing in 2011 after a long and bloody battle. Since then, the company’s biggest acquisition victory has been the continued sale of its Lakota UH-72A helicopter to the Army. “I remember spending eight years thinking that we could bring real value in air-to-air refueling for the Air Force. But eight years passed and I’m frustrated because I look at it and we didn’t succeed. I asked the team, ‘Let’s find a roadmap where we can make a mark with customers.’ And that means that I’m not going to see Boeing and Lockheeds and Northrop compete, but I’m going to look at other areas». The American client is making more and more investments in technologies that can increase or speed up decision-making. «There it is where we start looking at everything beyond an air breathing platform. We start looking at the data, the intelligence, that they need. It could be geospatial related intelligence, be it Earth observation, or electro-optical or synthetic aperture radar, or a combination that we are obtaining in information from multiple sources», said the new director of Airbus US Space and Defense.

Airbus already develops such capabilities in its commercial air and space businesses, and could quickly adapt them to the demands of the United States. When there are opportunities to offer Airbus aircraft to the US military, the strategy will be to partner with American cousins. For example, last year Airbus and Lockheed signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to market air refueling services to the United States Air Force using the Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport. The UH-72s will continue to be manufactured alongside the Airbus H125 commercial helicopter in Columbus, Miss., But Airbus US Space and Defense will make modifications, support and contracting.

In addition to appointing Chris Emerson as Head of the company’s space and defense business in the US, Airbus has also appointed a five-person board of directors, which includes Letitia Long, former Director of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and William Shelton, a retired Air Force four-star and former Chief of the Air Force Space Command, destined to deepen ties with the United States military, space and intelligence forces. He also named a seven-person advisory team made up of former national security officials.

Boeing pérdida +800 órdenes 737 MAX

AW | 2020 07 14 22:02 | INDUSTRY

Boeing has lost in 2020 more than 800 orders for the 737 MAX

The Boeing Company has reported the data published on Tuesday 07/14 shows that in the first half of 2020 the manufacturer has lost more than 800 orders for the Boeing 737 MAX model. Although Boeing now anticipates federal approval by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to realign its 737 MAX in September 2020, orders and deliveries continue on record drought records.

Boeing’s update on its ordering and delivery website also shows it delivered just 10 aircraft in June, of which only three were passenger planes. With very low production, Boeing delivered a total of 70 commercial/military aircraft in the first half of this year, compared to 239 delivered in the first half of 2019. Meanwhile, its rival Airbus Group has delivered 36 aircraft in June 2020 and 196 in the first half of the year 2020.

While Boeing’s delivery numbers are grim, its order numbers are worse. In June 2020, Boeing added a new solo FedEx order for a 767 cargo aircraft, and meanwhile removed 183 orders from its order book due to cancellations or possible cancellations. Boeing’s new gross orders for the year through June 2020 now stand at 59, but net of cancellations and model conversions, its order count stands at 323 negative aircraft. Adding the stand-by aircraft to the official order book is no longer robust enough to count as orders, and that number rises to 784 negative aircraft. In comparison, Airbus lost an order in June, bringing its net order count for the year to 298 aircraft.

In a statement, Greg Smith, Boeing’s Executive Vice President of Business Operations, attributed the drop in deliveries to the significant impacts of the Coronavirus pandemic on our customers and our operations. «We continue to closely monitor the commercial market while remaining highly engaged with our customers around the world to fully understand the short and long term requirements. All of this informs current and future production rates and any further adjustments that are necessary to balance supply. and the lawsuit», said the Operations Vice President.

The substantial decrease in the order book that is almost entirely due to the fact that some customers who abandoned the 737 MAX, the negative account for the first half of the year is 805 aircraft. All orders except five of the planes removed from the order book in June 2020 were MAX. Customers completely canceled 60 orders for 737 MAXs, and Boeing removed another 119 MAXs from its official order book that is no longer considered strong enough to meet U.S. accounting standards. Most of those 119 orders, while not yet officially canceled, could also be dead. For example, that total includes 92 Boeing 737 MAXs that Norwegian Air has publicly announced it is canceling. Boeing has not officially tagged them as canceled just because it is still negotiating with Norwegian low cost and is presumably looking for legal options. The 60 737 MAX cancellations in June 2020 included 30 for lessor BOC Aviation, 17 for lessor Avolon Aerospace Leasing Limited, six for Blue Air of Romania, five for lessor ACG and two more for unidentified clients.

Garuda delays orders from Airbus Group

Garuda Indonesia talks to Airbus to delay 2020 deliveries

Indonesian airline Garuda Indonesia Airlines is in talks with Airbus Group to delay deliveries of four planes to this year 2020, its Chief Executive Irfan Setiaputra said on Tuesday 14/07, as the Coronavirus outbreak restricts travel and reduces demand. «This year we should receive four Airbus planes, but we are negotiating to delay that», CEO Irfan Setiaputra said at a parliamentary hearing.

Garuda has nine A330NEOs on order with Airbus that have yet to be delivered, according to the European builder’s order book, while its low-cost Citilink arm has 25 A320NEOs on order.

Garuda faces financial difficulties after the impact of the pandemic causing a major disruption to world travel, resulting in a 90% drop in passenger volume on the airline. The company was forced to seek the extension of the maturity of its US$ 500 million Islamic bonds maturing in June 2020 and to seek new government loans. Garuda, meanwhile, is also restructuring its aircraft lease by seeking a lower lease price or extending the period, Irfan Setiaputra said.

The airline is seeking to terminate inappropriate contracts for this new scenario of changes in the way of traveling. Twelve of his landlords have agreed to a restructuring, according to Garuda’s filing in Parliament, while six have refused to postpone the rent. It is still in negotiations with thirteen other landlords. «Today there are a number of lessors who punished our planes for our inability to make payments», said Irfan Setiaputra.

Trainings for Boeing 737 MAX

US pilots review latest training draft for 737 MAX

The Boeing 737 MAX is being prepared for a return to the skies of the world. Last week, Boeing completed test flights of its fourth-generation 737 model to demonstrate that it can fly safely with new MCAS Flight Control software. When the company began testing the planes for recertification, a federal inspector general’s report said Boeing had kept information from federal regulators about the faulty computer system that downed the two planes during the plane’s initial approval process.

The Boeing 737 MAX is the latest model in the long and famous 737 saga, a type of aircraft with many variants over the decades. Units built far exceed 10,000 aircraft through all time. The fourth-generation MAX variant was officially launched in 2017 with four models to accommodate between 130 to 230 seats. The 737 MAX has larger and more fuel efficient engines than older models.

FAA

If the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is convinced that Boeing has corrected the problems that caused the accidents, the planes will return to service, but a schedule has not been announced. The agency said in a statement that «it will lift the grounding order only after we are satisfied that the plane meets the certification standards». The Boeing Company Chief Executive David Calhoun flew the plane in February 2020. The FAA Chief and longtime Delta pilot Stephen M. Dickson told the Senate Committee that he would fly the 737 MAX he You must be satisfied that you would bring your family on board before the grounding order is lifted.

Industry experts said it could still be several months before the FAA and EASA agencies (Europe), Transport Canada (Canada) and other international air navigation security agencies can inspect the new modifications implemented to the 737 MAX model. Many non-essential modifications to the fourth generation aircraft will continue to be applied during this 2020 and 2021.

Boeing to suspend production of its 737 Max jets - ABC News

737 MAX operators

Boeing has currently delivered 370 Boeing 737 Max aircraft to 47 customers worldwide. Southwest Airlines is the largest US operator of the 737 MAX, with 34 units in its fleet, American Airlines owns 24, and United Airlines with 14 aircraft. Delta Air Lines is the only major airline in the United States that has not ordered the plane to date. In North America, Air Canada, WestJet and Aeroméxico fly the plane and have orders for more. In South America, Aerolíneas Argentinas and GOL Linhas Aéreas have the most advanced unit of the 737. Throughout the world, airlines from Asia, Africa and Europe have modest units ready to restart operations.

Ryanair, the European low-cost airline, has yet to receive a Boeing 737 MAX. Europe’s leading budget company will fly the Boeing 737-8 MAX version 200, a variant of the MAX 8 to accommodate two hundred passengers. The airline has requested an order for 100 Boeing 737 MAX.

Order Drought/Cancellations

While the Boeing 737 MAX represents a small percentage of these global carriers’ fleets, hundreds more were in order before the accidents. Subsequent to grounding for more than a year, the 737 MAX has suffered loss of orders, where the company has canceled many major orders.

Boeing 737 MAX perspective

When the FAA recertifies the model, airlines will need to prepare the planes and their pilots, and the FAA needs to approve a new crew training regimen. Boeing has recommended to the FAA that pilots undergo flight simulator training combined with computer training «before safely returning MAX to service». This training could be similar to the intense annual checks that every airline pilot undergoes, regardless of which plane they fly. It could take several days per pilot on a tablet, along with simulating the new flight control system in a full-motion flight simulator. The details of the training have not been announced. Many pilots who fly the 737 MAX have been trained in flight simulators every three months since the plane was grounded to maintain their knowledge of how it flies.

Around 400 planes landed worldwide will undergo periodic maintenance even while grounded. When the FAA gives its approval, an airline’s maintenance crews and pilots will fly the aircraft without passengers on board (ferry) to the airline’s maintenance facilities for those aircraft that are not on their respective bases, undergoing extensive systems assessments and maintenance, including avionics and hydraulic systems, wing planes and landing gear. After checking these items, approximately two weeks, the airlines would move to the last phase of Boeing 737 MAX flight scheduling.

Airbus estudia futuro A220-500

AW | 2020 07 11 14:51 | INDUSTRY

Airbus studies future A220-500

European constructor examines launch of major variant of the A220

Airbus Group SE has been analyzing the expansion of the A220 regional model. Prior to the start of the global pandemic, the European constructor has been studying a longer and more efficient version when the momentum of the economies was beginning to consolidate. The A220-500 project loomed, a higher-performance variant.

Under the Bombardier Aviation wing, the Canadian company owned the CSeries versions of regional aircraft comprising the CS100, CS300 and CS500 models. After the sale of the aerocomercial division to Airbus, the new airplanes change their name to A220.

Bombardier-Airbus transition

Bombardier Aerospace has sold the CSeries Program to Airbus Group and is now owned by Airbus Canada Limited Partnership, a joint venture between Airbus Group SE and the investment arm of the Government of Québec Investissement. Airbus acquired a majority interest of 50.01% in the CSeries Program in October 2017, and the deal closed in July 2018. As part of the deal, Bombardier retained a 31% stake in the aircraft and Investissement Québec 19%. In August 2019, Airbus opened a second assembly line for the plane at its Mobile, Alabama, factory. In February 2020, Bombardier left the program; Airbus increased its stake to 75%, while Investissement Québec held the balance of 25% equity.

A220-500 Development

The A220 Program began towards the end of 2019 a new stage of development for more airlines after enabling the Plant in Mobile, Alabama, United States. With the boom in commercial aircraft orders, the European manufacturer studied the launch of the A220-500, the longest version of the regional aircraft. Increasing production rates would reach profitability by 2025. Variant 500 may be available between 2023-25, but current pandemic conditions have rethought the aeronautical group’s economic priorities. The A321XLR is one of the few developments that is continuing smoothly by boosting demand for mid-range aircraft.

A220 perspective

Airbus is measuring future demand for the regional market, which will surely regain its original levels, but in the meantime will delay any launch of the 500 variant, but now times have been set. But the delay of a new version would force Airbus to introduce new technologies to the A220, which would place it at the zenith of regional aviation. The introduction of a new variant would offer Airbus a more competitive range of aircraft at the lower end of the narrowbodies market, allowing a successor to the A320 Program to begin by taking advantage of the growing demand for larger narrowbodies.

On the contrary, in the case of The Boeing Company, it would have to cover the entire narrow-body segment with a single family, the 737 MAX, after learning of the failure of the negotiations of the agreement, the Brazilian Embraer S.A. under the company The Boeing Brasil Commercial. The attempts of the American manufacturer have been very disadvantaged with respect to the Airbus Group that will continue to advance to integrate the entire family of aircraft from the A220 to the A350, with the prospect of filling the remaining market gap that the A220-500 will occupy.
