American desarrolla tres rutas: Nueva York JFK (JFK), Miami y Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) a Buenos Aires (EZE). Delta posee dos rutas sirviendo a Atlanta (ATL) y Nueva York JFK a Buenos Aires (EZE). United enlaza un solo destino Houston Intercontinental (IAH) con Buenos Aires (EZE).

FAA IASA audit in Argentina

Final stage of IASA program aviation assessments

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials arrived in Argentina to complete the final stage of an audit of the International Aviation Safety Assessment Program (IASA). The country’s Category 1 status is under threat, and any potential downgrade would have significant implications for its aviation industry.

Argentina has maintained its top-tier Category 1 (CAT 1) status since 2005, but is now at risk of losing it after years of deteriorating air safety standards. An International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) audit conducted in 2022 found that the country’s compliance with international standards was only 60.47%, below other South American countries. The corresponding assessments for controls comprise eight critical elements (CE) of the IASA Program, with the country’s worst-performing areas being in «(CE-2) Specific Operating Regulations» at 37.29%, and «(CE-3) State Civil Aviation System and Safety Oversight Functions» at 41.67%. The FAA then conducted its own assessment in early 2024 and found 82 areas of concern.

Another Latin American country that faced a downgrade to its Category 1 status was Mexico, which suffered exactly this fate in 2021. However, the country managed to regain its coveted safety status two years later by implementing the necessary improvements.

Argentina inaugurated a new government last year and claims to have been engaged in a race against time to improve its civil aviation infrastructure. The Government of Argentina recently issued Decree No. 941/2024 to make sweeping changes to its civil aviation sector. In particular, this includes increasing the powers of its aviation regulator, the National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC), to take action such as fines, groundings, inspections and license revocations. It will also have the power to designate certain responsibilities, such as air navigation and airport operation services, to private companies.

A statement from Argentina’s Ministry of Transport said: «Despite the current administration’s race against time to reverse this situation caused by years of mismanagement at the National Civil Aviation Administration, the possibility of a category downgrade for the national aviation system remains».

The ANAC agency claims it has made about 85% progress in addressing the issues identified in the FAA’s assessment earlier this year, and will present this to FAA officials during their visit.

Category 2 (CAT 2) countries cannot launch new routes, increase frequencies, or deploy new aircraft on services to the United States, hampering their ability to expand their networks. In addition, they would not be allowed to enter into new codeshare agreements with U.S. carriers, and their operations would be subject to increased scrutiny by the FAA.

Currently, the only Argentine airline flying to the United States is Aerolíneas Argentinas, which operates 13 weekly flights between Buenos Aires (EZE) and Miami (MIA). The airline also has a codeshare agreement with U.S. carrier Delta Air Lines launched more than a decade ago. The United States and Argentina have a long-standing relationship. According to Cirium data, three U.S. airlines are operating direct flights between the two countries as of October 2024: American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines. American operates three routes: New York JFK (JFK), Miami, and Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) to Buenos Aires (EZE). Delta has two routes serving Atlanta (ATL) and New York JFK to Buenos Aires (EZE). United links a single destination Houston Intercontinental (IAH) to Buenos Aires (EZE).

SmartLynx recibe FAOC en EEUU

AW | 2024 10 28 11:22 | AIRLINES / AVIATION ORGANISMS

SmartLynx Receives FAOC in the USA

Receives Foreign Air Operator Certificate in the USA

SmartLynx Airlines, a globally recognized ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, Insurance) charter and cargo operator, has received the Foreign Air Operator Certificate (FAOC) granted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States of America. The certification allows the airline to begin operating to, from and within the United States.

The certificate received recognizes that SmartLynx aircraft registered under the Latvian AOC (Air Operator Certificate) meet the high standards and regulations of the United States. With the certification received, SmartLynx will now be able to support airlines operating full charter and intercontinental ACMI flights to and from this destination.

Edvinas Demenius, CEO of SmartLynx Airlines: “Air Operating Certificates are part of our infrastructure. It is crucial for an airline, especially ACMI, to have access to different regions. The US is the largest and one of the most regulated aviation markets in the world and being able to provide our services there brings a lot of value to the airline and boosts our competitiveness. About a third of our fleet operates under Latvian AOC. Therefore, this step allows us to expand our operations and gives more flexibility”.

In 2023, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States of America completed the audit of the state agency Civil Aviation Agency (CAA), granting Latvia the 1st category. It allowed aircraft operators registered in Latvia, such as SmartLynx, to start operating passenger flights on behalf of US airlines and commercial flights to the US, including from airports in other countries. Since 2019, SmartLynx Airlines has operated flights to and from the US under a Maltese AOC. Now, aircraft registered under the Latvian AOC are also eligible to operate these flights.

In 2024, passenger demand for flights has reached pre-pandemic levels for the first time. As a result, this year SmartLynx has transported a record number of passengers: 7.21 million between January and September 2024, which is 52% more than in the same period last year which represented 4.72 million users transported.

CSA Airlines restructuración

AW | 2024 10 24 15:28 | AIRLINES

CSA Airlines restructuring

Czech flagship airline to be transformed under Smartwings Group

ČSA Czech Airlines has announced the sad end of its airline business by filing for bankruptcy. On Saturday, October 26, 2024, the last flight on the Paris-Prague route will take off, ending a century of aviation history. Having been one of the five oldest airlines in the world, Czech Airlines will become another brand in the portfolio of the Smartwings Group. After 101 years of existence, a symbol of commercial aviation is disappearing.

Founded in October 1923, the first flights offered by Czech Airlines, or Czechoslovak State Airlines as it was called then, were domestic flights between Prague and Bratislava. ČSA’s first flight was inaugurated on October 29, 1923, with an Aero A-14 Brandenburg biplane (L-BARC) piloted by Karel Brabenec on the Prague-Bratislava route. The inaugural flight between the two cities was made by a biplane, carrying pilot Karel Brabenec and a journalist, and lasted three hours. Seven years later, the company’s routes were extended to destinations abroad, starting with Zagreb in Yugoslavia in 1930. In the 1970s, regular flights to more distant countries began, including long-haul flights to Montreal, New York, and Havana.

This weekend, however, after a century, flights with the OK code will disappear from the skies, as Czech Airlines ceases its flights as an independent airline. The company will also leave the SkyTeam alliance, a cooperation agreement between more than twenty airlines, including Air France, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Korean Air. Its planes will operate as part of the Smartwings portfolio, under the code QS.

Czech Airlines’ livery will not disappear as a visual identity, two Airbus A320 aircraft will continue to fly in Czech Airlines colours, as will the four new Airbus A220-300s, the first two of which will be delivered by the end of this year and the other two in the first half of 2025.

The airline’s problems began in the 1990s, with the first failed attempts at privatisation. The problems were compounded by management errors, the economic crisis of 2008, the rise of low-cost airlines, and then the Covid-19 pandemic. The aircraft fleet and the number of routes began to decline and in 2018 Czech Airlines became part of Smartwings, which bought almost 98% of the shares.

Jan Sůra, an air transport expert and founder of the travel news website zdopravy.cz, commented on the decline of Czech Airlines and the priorities of airline passengers today: “After 10 years, it is in decline and has a minimal number of passengers. For the general public, there will probably be no change, because Czech Airlines currently operates only the Prague-Paris route and has been replaced on the market by other airlines”.

The end of the airline may evoke feelings of nostalgia and sadness in Czechs, but Jan Sůra points out that such feelings do not determine travelers’ choice of tickets. «I think the brand no longer has that feeling for travellers, because air travel has changed a lot. CSA’s heyday was when flying was something exclusive and people didn’t fly that often. Now, thanks to the arrival of low-cost airlines, flying has become a completely common mode of transport, which is often the cheapest way to get around Europe. And people decide not based on feelings, but whether they are comfortable with the flight schedule and price».

Southwest-Elliot deal

Southwest Reaches Agreement with Elliott
Board Leadership Restructure

Southwest Airlines has reached an agreement with activist investor Elliott Investment Management after months of an ongoing battle over the leadership of the Dallas, Texas-based airline. The airline in a press release Thursday morning (Oct 24) said the deal would restructure the leadership of the Board of Directors, including the retirements of CEO and Executive Chairman Gary Kelly and six other directors. These changes will take effect on November 1, 2024. Previously, CEO Gary Kelly was scheduled to conclude his term in 2025.

Following Gary Kelly’s departure from the Board of Directors, he will assume the title of Chairman Emeritus. «We are pleased to have reached a collaborative resolution with Elliott, continuing to refresh our Board with the addition of new directors who bring complementary skills and experience. I am confident that this board will continue to hold the leadership team accountable to execute its transformation plan and deliver financial performance. It has been the honor of my life to work with our people and serve our customers to make Southwest the leader it is today. I believe Southwest’s best days are ahead under the vision and leadership of Bob Jordan and the oversight of this reconstituted board», Gary Kelly said in a press release.

Elliott and Southwest are in early discussions to reach an agreement for significant representation on the Board of Directors, reaching an agreement to retain CEO Bob Jordan and add six new directors.

Elliott requests a special meeting in December 2024 at Southwest Airlines and reduces the Board of Directors list to 8 people. According to Southwest, David Cush, Sarah Feinberg, Dave Grissen, Gregg Saretsky, and Patricia Watson have been appointed as independent directors to Southwest’s Board of Directors. Pierre Breber, former Chief Financial Officer of Chevron, has also been appointed to the board of directors. These appointments will also be effective November 1, 2024. Gregg Saretsky, David Cush, and three additional directors will be appointed to serve on the Board’s Finance Committee, with Gregg Saretsky as Chairman.

The airline said the newly reconstituted Board of Directors will appoint a new independent Chairman, and the Board will be reduced to 13 members effective at Southwest’s 2025 Annual Meeting of Shareholders.

«We are pleased to have reached an agreement with Southwest on the addition of six new directors who will enhance and revitalize its board of directors. All are highly qualified and will bring diverse skills and backgrounds to the task of overseeing Southwest under the leadership of a new board chairman. We believe the strategic changes Southwest has announced since we began our engagement, along with the new independent directors and governance enhancements, will position the company to improve business performance, drive operational execution, and evaluate additional changes to create long-term shareholder value. We are grateful to Southwest’s shareholders, labor groups, and leadership for their constructive engagement, and look forward to Southwest growing stronger and realizing its full potential», said Elliott Partner John Pike and Portfolio Manager Bobby Xu.

The announcement comes just hours after Southwest reported a profitable earnings report that beat analysts’ estimates.

The 777 Freighter can fly further with a range of 9,200 kilometres/4,970 nautical miles and carry more cargo (102 tonnes) than any other twin-engine freighter aircraft today. This capability enables operators to carry more cargo on more non-stop routes with better operating economics, connecting high-value cargo markets such as the Middle East with the US and Europe.

“Emirates continues to set the direction for our industry and we deeply appreciate the trust they have placed in the Boeing family of widebody airplanes to serve as the backbone of their global fleet. We are proud to support the growth of Emirates SkyCargo, which relies on the performance and versatility of our 777 Freighter to continue connecting the world”, said Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

Boeing anticipates that an additional 2,845 freighters will enter service over the next 20 years to meet the growing demand for global trade and e-commerce. The 777 Freighter is Boeing’s best-selling freighter of all time, with 275 delivered to date. As the freighter market leader, Boeing provides more than 90% of the world’s dedicated freighter capacity, including new and converted airplanes.

Boeing solicita préstamos

AW | 2024 10 15 14:38 | INDUSTRY

Boeing seeks loans

Boeing prepares US$ 35 billion in funding
Machinist strike continues

The Boeing Company announced Tuesday, October 15, plans to raise up to US$ 25 billion through stock and debt offerings and a US$ 10 billion credit agreement with major lenders amid a regulatory and production crisis. It was unclear when and how much the aircraft maker would raise through the offering, but analysts estimate Boeing would need to raise between US$ 10 billion and US$ 15 billion to maintain its credit ratings, which are now just one notch above basic.

The company is grappling with a drop in production of its best-selling 737 MAX aircraft following serious incidents on Alaska Airlines flight AS1282 in January 2024 and a strike by thousands of unionized workers since September 13, 2024.

Boeing said on Tuesday 15/10 that it had not drawn on the new US$ 10 billion credit facility arranged by Bank of America, Citibank, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan, nor on its existing revolving credit facility. «These are two prudent steps to support the company’s access to liquidity», Boeing said, adding that potential equity and debt offerings will provide options to support its balance sheet over a three-year period.

S&P Global and Fitch Ratings had warned of a downgrade in 09/2024. Rating agencies said Tuesday that the equity and debt offerings could help preserve Boeing’s investment grade rating. «The supplemental credit facility also seems like a sensible precaution», said Ben Tsocanos of S&P Global.

However, some analysts were not convinced. «We take the vagueness and broadness of the announcement and the need for temporary funding as an implication that banks are struggling to sell this issue to potential investors or lenders», said Agency Partners analyst Nick Cunningham. The offer was either too large for immediate liquidity needs or not large enough to permanently refinance the company, it may imply that near-term liquidity is worse than previously thought. Nick Cunningham suspended his recommendation and price target for Boeing stock.

On Monday, Emirates Airline President Tim Clark became the first senior industry figure to express fears about Boeing’s ability to weather the worst crisis in its history intact. «Unless the company can raise funds through a rights issue, I see an imminent write-down with Chapter 11 on the horizon», Tim Clark told Air Current, an aviation industry publication.

Boeing will use the funds for general corporate purposes, according to filings with the U.S. securities regulator on Tuesday. The aircraft maker had cash and cash equivalents of US$ 10.89 billion as of June 30, 2024.

The strike is costing the aerospace company more than US$ 1 billion a month, according to an estimate that was published before Boeing announced it will cut 17,000 jobs or 10% of its global workforce. The company and the machinists union, which represents about 33,000 striking workers in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, have yet to reach an agreement on a new contract and talks have become increasingly heated. Acting U.S. Labor Secretary Julie Su met with Boeing and the union in Seattle on Monday 10/14 in an attempt to break the impasse.

Aircraft manufacturer Boeing was reeling from a cap imposed by aviation regulator the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on production of its 737 MAX jets after the mid-air cockpit panel exploded in January 2024. Boeing has US$ 11.5 billion in debt maturing through Feb. 1, 2026, and has pledged to issue US$ 4.7 billion of its stock to acquire Spirit AeroSystems and assume its debt. Boeing was examining options to raise billions of Dollars through a stock sale and similar securities. Boeing delivered 33 planes in September 2024, down from 40 in August 2024, as it fell further in the delivery race with rival Airbus.

British cancelaciones 15% flota 787

AW | 2024 10 14 14:37 | AIRLINES / MRO / INDUSTRY

British Airways cancels 15% of its 787 fleet

British Airways is cancelling long-haul flights

British Airways is modifying its long-haul operations with the Boeing 787 fleet due to problems affecting the engine of these aircraft. The IAG Group airline has been forced to cancel and reschedule part of its long-haul operations. The cancellations of flights on Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft affect the Rolls & Royce Trent 1000 engines, which have been going on for a long time and for which there is no prospect of a solution in the short term. The British airline has kept 15% of its fleet stationary, has postponed its return to Malaysia and reduced operations to Qatar and New York.

The crisis affecting the supply chain of the two main fleet manufacturers, Airbus and Boeing, is generating rescheduling and cancellations in the airlines’ operations. British Airways, which like Iberia, Vueling, Level, and Aer Lingus is part of IAG, has begun to reschedule part of its flight schedule due to the forced cancellation of long-haul routes.

Supply chain problems have impacted Rolls-Royce, supplier of Trent 1000 engines and parts for the airline’s Boeing 787 fleet. The incidents have meant that the airline has had to delay its return to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, scheduled for this November 2024, until next year 2025. This adjustment in the flight schedule to Malaysia is not the first, as in recent weeks, British Airways has been forced to halve the number of flights to Qatar, as well as suspend routes between London/Gatwick and New York/JFK due to a shortage of spare parts for the engines.

The fleet affected by the service descheduling reaches five (5) Boeing 787s of British Airways are immobilized, the equivalent of 15% of the airline’s fleet. The cancellations occur after the programming of the 787 in September 2024 was also affected by delays in air traffic control.

Delays in the delivery of supplies and aircraft maintenance represent a challenge for airlines. The change of plans that the British airline has been forced to undergo is part of the delays and crises in the supply chain, which are combined with the high demand for maintenance services, in turn, caused by delays in aircraft deliveries. According to Bain & Company, aircraft engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services are in short supply compared to the demand of companies, which by 2030 could exceed supply by 17%. This deficit could slow the growth of air traffic and force companies to restrict flights and routes.

Regarding the delays in the delivery of new aircraft, there are companies, such as Ryanair, which have confirmed that their growth plans could be jeopardised if the strike at the Boeing plant were to continue for a long time, as the airline is heavily dependent on the North American giant, as it bases its fleet model especially on the 737. According to estimates by the CEO of the Ryanair group, although the group’s main airline had initially planned to transport 205 million passengers in 2024, it now plans to transport 200 million.

Embraer variante militar E2-Jet

AW | 2024 10 08 15:40 | INDUSTRY

Embraer unveils E190-E2 military variant

Embraer SA has unveiled a military variant of its E190-E2 commercial aircraft at the Korea Army International Defense Exhibition 2024. The Brazilian aerospace firm showed a conceptual image of the aircraft, which indicates modifications for specialized military missions. Although no technical details of the militarized variant of the E190-E2 were provided, the features would allow for maritime patrol, airborne early warning and surveillance missions.

The introduction of the military model will allow it to capture a market with greater penetration compared to the larger 737 or A330 military aircraft models.

The E190-E2 is the intermediate model of Embraer’s E2-JET family of narrow-body commercial aircraft. It made its first flight in 2016 and received type certification in 2018. Measuring 36 metres (118 ft) in length, it can carry approximately 114 passengers. The fixed-wing aircraft also features fuel-efficient turbofan engines from Pratt & Whitney. According to Embraer, the E190-E2 was developed using know-how from other E2 aircraft, ensuring it is modern and reliable, while retaining the maturity of its predecessors.

This is not the first time Embraer has converted its commercial aircraft for special missions. Previously, the company transformed its ERJ-145 regional aircraft into the ERJ-145 AEW&C military variant on a special mission platform. It also produced airborne early warning and maritime patrol aircraft for several countries based on its existing aircraft.
