AIRGWAYS ® Icon-AW

Airbus wins US trade law at WTO

Toulouse, France · Airbus CEO Tom Enders congratulated the EU «for what is a great victory for fair trade in commercial aviation. The WTO stated that the US subsidy system largely grants illegal subsidies, while the European system of reimbursement of loan-based launch investments mainly complies with international trade law».

«The WTO panel has now shown how Boeing continues to seek the benefits of this widespread illegal support, to the detriment of equal opportunity in the global aviation industry.» The amount of money involved distorts trade completely. There is no room for these unfair and anti-competitive practices in today’s modern and dynamic global marketplace, and the WTO must make clear that no government or company can escape its international responsibilities», Enders concluded.

«Throughout this seemingly endless dispute with Boeing, it is very clear that Boeing is using these cases for PR and Lobbying purposes rather than allowing for a serious debate about it,» said Fabrice Bregier, Chief Operating Officer of Airbus. «Equal opportunity in the commercial aircraft sector. That is not only unfortunate, it will soon be seen as a shot on its own foot in light of the current and future competitive environment in our industry. «

In a statement, Airbus notes that «the United States has failed to comply with WTO rulings in the decade-long transatlantic battle over subsidies to commercial aircraft. This has been completed by the WTO Compliance Panel in the DS353 (US vs. US) dispute, which refers to billions of dollars in subsidies given to The Boeing Company. «

«In March 2012, the WTO Dispute Settlement Body ruled that a number of subsidies provided by the US to Boeing were illegal and should be withdrawn within six months, or alternatively that their adverse effects should be eliminated . In September 2012, the United States claimed that it had taken all necessary steps to achieve compliance. Today, the EU won a victory in demonstrating the existence of a number of illegal subsidies, including support from R & D provided by NASA and the Department of Defense (DoD), and tax cuts of billions Of Washington State dollars. The EU has also won in demonstrating the continuing negative effects of some of these subsidies. «

«For five years without complying with WTO rulings, the United States has continued to provide huge benefits to Boeing in the form of unfair and anti-competitive subsidies, resulting in an additional loss of sales of at least 300 aircraft, with a value Estimated between 15,000 and 20,000 million dollars. «

«Overall, combining this with the WTO decision in late 2016 in dispute DS487, dealing with illegal subsidies for the 777X, as well as previous resolutions in DS353, the total impact of subsidies is estimated at 100 million Dollars in lost sales for Airbus. » «After the original decision was issued in 2012, the US further increased its subsidies to Boeing, with measures such as the provision of incentives for production of 787 in South Carolina, and the granting of more funds and support NASA and DOD for R & D. Today, the Panel agrees with the EU that it is right for these additional measures to be included in the scope of the proceeding. » «The Panel found that non-withdrawn subsidies continue to have adverse effects in the form of significant lost sales to Airbus. In particular, the Panel found that the reductions in the Washington State B & O tax had caused Airbus to lose at least $ 16 billion in sales. This finding could ultimately lead to the imposition of billions of dollars of trade sanctions against the US. » «The decision is now expected to be appealed. However, there is no indication that the US arguments are different from the previous ones, despite the clear position of the WTO. With the additional time that the US will win with such an appeal, the damage to Airbus caused by subsidies will only continue to increase. » «The first half of 2017 has seen the market for large commercial aircraft in uncharted territory. While we saw the first flights of the new new aircraft C919 and MC-21 bursting in the market, Boeing presented a local branch on commercial aid in the United States International Trade Commission against Bombardier, with the intention to exclude the CS aircraft from the American market. It seems clear that Boeing is doing everything it can to maintain the ‘status quo’ that has been illegally exploited for all these years, «concludes the Airbus statement. HNA, la poderosa multinacional china

AW | 2017 06 12 18:53 | AIRLINES MARKET

AIRGWAYS ® Icon-AW

HNA, the powerful Chinese multinational

The giant Chinese group HNA is among the 500 largest companies in the world

In July 2016, the US magazine Fortune placed the HNA Group at 353, with annual revenues of more than $ 29.5 billion. The Chinese conglomerate has a staff of more than 400,000 employees around the world and even has a presence in Latin America. It has five ambitious infrastructure projects with which China wants to «shake» the world economic order.

In recent years, HNA has invested more than US $ 145 billion in acquiring dozens of companies and major investments in giants such as Deutsche Bank or the Hilton hotel chain. It has acquired a stake in the controversial Odebrecht at the Rio de Janeiro airport and showed interest in buying shares of Avianca Holdings SA and Avianca Brasil, the Latin American airlines controlled by Bolivian businessman Germán Efromovich. «The Odebrecht-HNA agreement is closed,» he told AFP news agency Tarcisio de Freitas, secretary of Project Coordination of the Secretariat of the Brazilian Presidency. HNA executive director Adam Tan assured his «full confidence» in business strategy, despite threats to tighten controls on Chinese business spending and the prospect of Brexit in the UK. A strategy that consists of buying companies throughout the entire supply chain. «That’s what our business is all about: we manage from airlines to airport businesses, to malls or travel agencies,» says Adam Tan.

HNA GROUP, ACQUISITIONS AND MERGERS

Among the airlines, it owns 16 companies under its control in China and abroad, among Chinese companies: Hainan Airlines, Tienjin Airlines, Lucky Air, West Air, Urumqi Air, Fuzhou Airlines, GX Airlines, Yangtze River Express, HNA Cargo, Capital Airlines, Deer Jet, Capital Helicopter, Air Guilin, Hong Kong Express, Hong Kong Airlines. Foreign companies include: Aigle Azur of the Republic of France, AWA of the Republic of Nigeria, Com Air Ltd. of South Africa, myCargo of Turkey and Azul Airlines of Brazil, and projections in the capital of Avianca Colombia and Avianca Brazil among other related companies.

Trust in United Kingdom

But HNA also operates outside of the tourist industry. China’s ambitious plan for An-225, the world’s largest airplane: use it to launch satellites from the air. In fact, it has an extensive portfolio of properties. Among them, two skyscrapers in the London neighborhood of Canary Wharf, the financial district of the British capital. Although HNA closed the purchase shortly before the Brexit vote, Adam Tan relies on the strength of the UK economy. «United Kingdom, inside or outside the European Union, will remain the United Kingdom».

HNA Group
HNA was founded in 1993 by its current chairman, Chinese billionaire Chen Feng. Since then, its presence in the transport and aviation sectors has not stopped growing. A dizzying expansion achieved without money from the Chinese government, says HNA CEO Adam Tan. The China Money Network news portal, however, casts doubt on this statement and shows its skepticism about the lack of transparency of the multinational. Its vast business, which encompasses at least 454 entities worldwide, according to a 2015 report from China’s Shanghai Brilliance, may have been favored by the protection of Beijing’s political elites.

Perhaps for these reasons, his «theoretical» financial independence and the alleged protectionism of the Chinese Communist Party, Adam Tan shows no concern about Beijing’s plans to restrict Chinese business spending abroad. According to Adam Tan, HNA will continue to receive funding from Chinese banks and, thanks to its large presence in markets around the world, will be backed by international entities. With the support of banks like JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs, we can continue to grow in the future, adds the CEO of HNA. A \ W

Vuelo MU736 China Eastern Airlines avión obligado a aterrizar en Sydney

AW | 2017 06 12 07:53 | SAFETY / SECURITY

AIRGWAYS ® Icon-AW

Flight MU736 China Eastern Airlines plane forced to land back in Sydney

China Eastern Airlines plane forced to land back in Sydney as passengers stranded

Audio from the cockpit of a China Eastern flight that had to return to Sydney airport last night implies the pilot misspoke when alerting the tower.

The Shanghai-bound, MU736 flight which departed Sydney about 8.30pm on Sunday, experienced an engine fault mid-air and returned about an hour after take-off.

In the audio, which has been confirmed by a spokeswoman from China Eastern Airlines, the pilot appears to misspeak when trying to alert authorities to the engine fault. “Engine number one fooked” can be heard twice in the audio. “Continue climb to 5000,” the speaker later says. The airline spokeswoman said the audio was a “communication between our flight crew and air traffic control”. The audio sent social media into a spin, with some suggesting the pilot was trying to say “fault” and others pointing to a slip of the tongue.

The plane landed in Sydney and passengers, who were put up in hotels, were expected to depart on another flight today. The returned aircraft is being examined at Sydney airport and an Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigation is underway into the cause of the damage. China Eastern Airlines General Manager Kathy Zhang confirmed the aircraft was under investigation.

“MU736 (flight) from Sydney to Shanghai encountered an engine problem after take-off,” Ms Zhang said. “The crew observed the abnormal situation of the left engine and decided to return to Sydney airport immediately. All passengers and crew members were landed safely. They were then arranged accommodation by China Eastern Airlines.”

“It kind of smelt like burning — oh I was scared, I was really scared. Our group was terrified,” one passenger told the network as her friend added: “Thank God we’re alive.” Another said: “The Chinese fellow sitting right on the window when we took off — he obviously saw what was going on because he was waving frantically to the staff to come and look at the window». “There were only about three of four English-speaking people on the plane and the majority of announcements were made in Chinese. That was a little bit tricky.”

It is believed that members of the cabin crew noticed damage to the air inlet of the left engine — a strip had been torn off the external cover of the engine leaving it partially not contained.

The plane travelled as far south as Bulli when it was forced to radio the problem to Sydney airport, and begin a winding return back over the water before making a hasty landing on the tarmac.

Despite the havoc, passengers applauded airline staff for their professionalism. They were put up in hotels at Sydney airport by China Eastern and are expected to depart Sydney today.

“Today the passengers will be arranged to fly to their destinations on either China Eastern flights or other airlines,” a spokeswoman for the airline said.

Meanwhile, Sydney airport was in chaos earlier today as a blanket of fog covered the city this morning, which impacted arrivals and departures.

One international flight has been diverted to Brisbane, and 10 domestic flights were cancelled — a combination of arrivals and departures. A \ W

Boeing presentará nuevo avión NMA en Le Bourget Paris Air Show 2017

AW | 2017 06 12 00:13 | INDUSTRY

AIRGWAYS ® Icon-AW

Boeing to will present new NMA aircraft at Le Bourget Paris Air Show 2017

Boeing To Unveil First New Midsize Airplane Details In Paris Air Show 2017

The Boeing’s New Midsize Airplane (NMA) project expected to be a key topic at the upcoming Paris Air Show, the manufacturer will take advantage of this interest to showcase its concept by releasing the first few tangible details. Specifics about the evolving configuration remain closely held, and Boeing says it is still pursuing innovations across multiple areas—from manufacturing processes and production systems to propulsion—to help strengthen the business case.

Boeing’s proposed two-member new midsize airplane (NMA) family will do for the 220- to 270-seat market what the 787 Dreamliner line did for the segment it occupies—namely, open city pairs that would have proven unprofitable with a larger airplane or operationally infeasible with a smaller one, according to Boeing Commercial Airplanes vice president and general manager of airplane development Mike Delaney. Speaking with reporters during a pre-Paris Airshow briefing in Seattle, Delaney noted that airlines have managed to open 140 new city pairs with the Dreamliner family because they offer seat costs comparable with a 777 at a much lower trip cost.

“We’re going to put an airplane in that space that has the economics that nobody can touch, and what it will do is open up the city pairs and the economics that nobody else can. That’s the part that [Airbus executives] don’t tell you about,” said Delaney. “The key to the NMA is we’re going to do exactly in that market what we did with the 787. The traffic we predict will grow by about 30 percent based on the ability to open up city pairs that don’t exist today. That’s the value proposition. That’s why all the airlines are all excited. They don’t see a replacement of the 757. They see the future.”

For Boeing, the future of the 4,500- to 5,000-nautical-mile-range NMA starts with introduction some time around the middle of the next decade, as infrastructure, capacity and frequency constraints stand to become far more pronounced than the limitations with which airlines must cope today.

“There will be a growing need for an airplane in that category,” opined Air Lease executive chairman Steven Udvar-Hazy during this past spring’s International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading (ISTAT) conference in San Diego. “It’s not magnified today, but if you look at the lifecycle of the airplane, it is significant. Don’t forget the 737 is fifty years old this year.”

Most of the 57 airlines with which Boeing has consulted on its concept for an NMA have expressed a desire for better cabin comfort and lower turn times at airports, clearly suggesting a preference for twin-aisle design. Delaney explained that designers cannot plausibly stretch an airplane designed to carry as many as 270 seats in a dual-class configuration beyond the length of a 757. “If you stretch a single-aisle NMA, it’s about 18 to 25 feet longer than a 757,” he estimated. “I’m not exactly sure that’s optically an airplane you want to be on. I certainly wouldn’t want to be in row 65E waiting to get off.”

ENGINE CONSIDERATIONS

Speaking at ISTAT alongside Udvar-Hazy, AerCap Holdings CEO Angus Kelly noted that engine developments have not reached the stage at which such an airplane would appeal to a global customer base, however. “The key part of this is the engine technology,” said Kelly. “If you’re going to be searching for that window between the A321 market and the 787 market, you need a bigger engine; you need a more efficient engine. It’s not there yet.”

As always, cost will prove a key consideration, and Kelly argued that to keep costs down one might want a lower-thrust engine that might not necessarily offer the required performance.

“If you have a 40,000-pound-thrust engine, that might be good for some of your customer base, but is it good for all of them?” Kelly asked rhetorically. “And if its 45,000 pounds of thrust, it’s going to be a more expensive airplane, and that’s the challenge they have to get right.”

From Delaney’s perspective, the biggest challenge lies with integrating the engine with the airplane, regardless of thrust requirements.

Delaney called the NMA a transformational program for the company, but not one that can’t work from a cost perspective. “People don’t understand the payback we got from the 787 and how much we harvested in the 777X,” he stressed.

Among all of the required suppliers for the NMA, Boeing has spoken to only the three big engine companies, said Delaney. “The very specific reason is because the engine-airframe is so highly integrated,” he said. «We go through a series of iterative processes with them and what we tell them is designed to push the boundaries of the airplane».

“The engine companies are responding very well; we’re very pleased with the technical interaction with all three companies [and] how they are going to try to optimize,” he added. “What they try to guess and what they can’t [know], which is the secret sauce of the whole thing and one of the most guarded secrets in the Boeing company, is how to integrate an engine into an airplane…It’s all about installation effects and that’s the keys to the kingdom and that’s what we work with them on now.” A \ W

Agencias turísticas vs las aerolíneas

AW | 2017 06 11 12:18 | CONGRESS

AIRGWAYS ® Icon-AW

Tourist agencies vs airlines

Argentine Federation of Travel and Tourism Companies threatened to initiate legal action against airlines if they do not reimburse the payment of commissions

The president of the Argentine Federation of Travel and Tourism Companies (Faevyt), Fabricio Di Giambattista, announced that this entity will take legal action against airlines that failed to pay commissions to ticket issuers, if they did not resolve their decision.

In the framework of Faevyt’s congress in Catamarca, the businessman explained that «although in some countries there is zero commission, what we say is that zero only works in countries with other economies and other taxes» and remarked that «in the region There is no zero commission, in the only place that was propitió was here in Argentina».

According to Di Giambattista, the situation «generates an inability of competition from many agencies that can not offer tickets, because you can not work at a loss», and «considered that the decision of the airlines affects the smaller travel agencies by».

«Not being able to offer a tourist product they are less likely to sell and they will have to supply the air services commercial,» he said, and said that «that is our demand, our claim, if there was a chance to review it would be great and if not, We will continue with the demand «.

The initial kick-off on the refusal to pay commissions to travel agencies was given by Aerolíneas Argentinas, which was followed by Gol, Aeromexico, Latam and Copa, so Faevyt made the decision to take legal action against these companies. «If there is no possibility of reviewing this measure, someone will have to see if there is a legal possibility that we work at zero remuneration,» said Di Giambattista.

AIRGWAYS ® Icon-AW

Arab dispute aggravates problems of Gulf airlines

Cancun, Mexico · The gap between the Arab powers has hit airlines that have already been damaged by low oil prices and portable bans, highlighting the sensitivity of the Gulf centers to regional uncertainty and Opening up a gap for rival airlines, at least in the short term.

The unexpected closure of most of the airspace surrounding the Qatar airline and restrictions on the travel of its nationals left passengers stranded and forced its CEO to leave a meeting of airline executives in Mexico.

«We were completely surprised at all,» said Alexandre de Juniac, director of the International Air Transport Association, after the meeting of some 200 airlines.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Baréin broke diplomatic ties with Qatar on Monday for alleged support for the militants. The transport links are closed.

Caught in a diplomatic row for the second time in three years, Qatar Airways was forced to reorient a dozen flights across Iranian airspace, while the world’s second richest nation per capita was virtually isolated by air restrictions. It was a dramatic blow for the then-mighty airline, which has invested billions of dollars in airplanes and confronted its American competitors in its vertiginous expansion.

«The entire business model is based on being a hub airport, they have invested in the airport, they have invested in last generation aircraft, they are losing a key source of traffic to the main local markets.» «With the ban on airspace, not only is it a headache to reorient part of the operation, but it will make longer flights by having to make detours. It adds time and costs and disturbs its schedules in connection with connections,» he said. John Strickland, British aviation consultant. A \ W
