35th JAT Boeing 737-300 Anniversaries

The world’s oldest Boeing 737-300 continues to fly

JAT_Isologotype_001

On December 17, 1985, the first Boeing 737-300 landed in Belgrade, the Republic of Yugoslavia after flying 12,000 kilometers by ferry from Seattle (WA) with two refueling in Canada and Shannon (Ireland), the fourth Boeing 737- 300 for JAT Jugoslovenski Aerotransport, registered YU-ANI Boeing 737-3H9 MSN: 23416, arriving for the first time on the runway at Belgrade Airport. The next day, he began a long journey with the first JU350 flight to Frankfurt, Germany. After carrying more than three million passengers in 35 years, the YU-ANI remains in service and marking a historic milestone, becoming the oldest passenger Boeing 737 of the 300 Series, known as the Classic Series still in regular service from passengers.

The history behind the Boeing 737-300 aircraft type at JAT dates back to 1984, when the airline was looking for a new aircraft for its Euro-Mediterranean network, which would replace the DC-9 and Boeing 727 fleet. The older DC-9 in He was fourteen at the time, and the Boeing 727 was ten. Due to a volatile market, high fuel prices and competition, JAT reacted earlier than expected. The main goal was to find a type of aircraft that would provide higher frequencies. The decision was made to go with the Boeing 737-300, instead of the MD-80/81/82 (DC-9 Super 80) that was already in use in the Inex Adria fleet, while the Airbus A320 was to enter. newly in commercial service in April 1988 with the launch airline Air France.

For JAT Airlines it had been a very risky decision. The Boeing 737-300 was entering service in late 1984 and in addition to a British charter company, there were no orders for this type of aircraft in Europe, of which six carriers had placed orders at that time across the world. This made it difficult to use the aircraft in terms of operations, maintenance, crew training, among other details. The new concept adopted by Boeing in the new generation of the Boeing 737 Classic had brought a series of new features and many aerodynamic, structural, and cabin improvements among other details, as well as structural changes to the composite materials in all flight controls. to reduce the specific weight of the aircraft. The sole powerplant was the one powered by the General Electric GE Snecma CFM-56-3, which was at the core of the improvements to the initial Boeing 737-300 and proved to be nearly 20% more efficient than the Pratt & Whitney JT8D. used in early version Boeing 737-200 / 200ADV models, as well as McDonnell Douglas DC-9 models at that time.

JAT became the first European operator to introduce the second-generation type of aircraft into scheduled service, and at that time had one of the most modern fleets in the world at its disposal. The contract with Boeing and JAT was signed on September 23, 1984, initially for the purchase of two 737-300 aircraft. Crew training for the introduction of the first pair of 737-300s involved involved twelve captains and twelve first officers, flying 100 hours under the supervision of Boeing instructors. A similar process was followed for the two additional 300 Series, ordered in March 1985. The third and fourth Classic 737s were YU-ANH and YU-ANI. They had their first flights in December 1985. In 1986 two more 737s called YU-ANJ and YU-ANL arrived, while in November 1987 the registered YU-ANK had started operations. Finally, the last two, YU-ANV and YU-ANW, landed in Belgrade in 1988. In this year, the average daily use of the nine Boeing 737-300s was 08:16 hours. JAT versions of the Boeing 737-300 had a total of 138 seats. At the front of the plane there were 54 seats provided for passengers in Adriatic Class and 84 for passengers in Economy Class. The Adriatic Class was JAT’s special business class, a unique product in the skies of Europe and was introduced in 1983. Both classes had more comfortable seats and the head compartment for carry-on luggage was larger than any other aircraft in the company. JAT fleet. The cabin also featured a video transmission system for shorter movies and safety demonstrations, as well as an eight-channel music system. Later, some of the Boeing 737s had a new business class with a 2-2 configuration in the first three rows, while some had locked middle seats, and now, the remaining 737s are flying in all economy class designs (144 seats). JAT’s Boeing 737s had a differentiation from the others in the 300 Series because they did not have an EFIS (Electronic Flight Instrument System) cockpit. Also, another interesting fact is that during the 1990s, JAT engineers and mechanics successfully treated corrosion on a part of the 737’s wing, which was an unknown procedure at the time. Later, Boeing introduced this practice as a standard maintenance procedure for the entire family.

In addition to its own 737-300 fleet, JAT Airlines leased several additional Boeing 737s during the time. The oldest of these was the Boeing 737-3Q4 YU-AON, followed by YU-AOU and YU-AOV, leased from Bulgaria Air. Also the largest version, Boeing 737-400 was part of the fleet during the 2000s with YU-AOO, YU-AOR, YU-AOS and YU-AOK registrations. The airline exclusively deployed the aircraft on some routes, such as the Belgrade-Tivat-London service in 2004. In addition, JAT leased, predominantly through drive-lease, its own fleet of Boeing 737-300s to other airlines in Europe, Africa , The Middle East and even in Australia in 1989 the aircraft registration YU-AND and YU-ANJ that flew for Australian Airlines. Furthermore, due to United Nations sanctions, the YU-ANI registered Boeing 737-300 was forcibly punished and kept at Istanbul Airport for eight years, being returned to its base in May 2000.

The aircraft acquired by JAT Yugoslav Airlines has also flown for its successor Jat Airways and is currently flying under the Air Serbia/Aviolet charter brand. Throughout its useful life, it has been leased to various airlines, including Constellation International, Cameroon Airlines, Air Malta, Tunis Air, MAT and Air Ivoire.

Today, only two Boeing 737-300s with YU-ANI and ANK registrations continue to fly for Air Serbia / Aviolet’s charter airline, making leisure flights, but it can also be seen at some of the main European airports on regular services. The first Boeing 737, YU-AND, has been parked since February 2020 and is waiting to be placed at the Belgrade Aviation Museum. After millions of passengers and kilometers flown, the future of the remaining 737-300s is uncertain, especially today, when the aviation sector is in one of its most difficult periods to travel. After a long flight history, the Boeing 737-300 still continues to fly, often resisting the ravages of time and the dizzying economic changes that today brings, but without a doubt, after 35 years of glorious adventures it continues marking a milestone in global commercial aviation.

JAT AIRLINES HISTORY

Jat Airways was the national flag carrier and the largest airline in Serbia, and formerly Yugoslavia. Founded in 1927 as Aeroput, the airline ceased operations during World War II. After resuming flights in 1947, the airline was renamed Jugoslovenski Aerotransport (JAT) on April 1, 1947. The airline was renamed again on August 8, 2003. Jat Airways and its predecessors were one of the oldest airlines that they were still in operation. Flight operations were based at Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla Airport, and the airline operated scheduled services to 72 international destinations, outside of areas that were previously part of Yugoslavia, as well as charters and wet leases. Jat Airways was owned by the Serbian government and had 1,250 employees. On August 1, 2013, the Government of Serbia and Etihad Airways entered into an agreement that reorganized the operations of Jat Airways, renaming it Air Serbia after the end of the transition period. Certain assets, such as the ATR 72 aircraft, would be transitioned to Air Serbia, while other assets (such as the 737-300) would remain under the JAT Airways brand until retired. The change marked the end of 66 years for the JAT brand.

Reclaman obras Aeropuerto San Rafael

AW | 2020 12 20 10:40 | AIRPORTS / GOVERNMENT

San Rafael Airport works claim

Work order at San Rafael Airport in Argentina

The political arch and the different institutional bodies of San Rafael, Mendoza Province, continue to request a new request from the airport concessionaire Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 (AA2000), the Ministry of Transportation of the Nation and the Regulatory Body of the National Airport System (ORSNA) for the pending works at the San Rafeal/Santiago Germanó Airport, which call for the need to improve the vital air station for the reactivation of tourism in the region. The airport terminal is in need of better infrastructures to support the future increase in demand for more flight traffic and to optimize the limited air connectivity in the south of Mendoza. In order to promote the claim, the Legislature of the Province of Mendoza has submitted a new request to the concessionaire and government authorities of the Nation to request the progress of the works necessary for the air station, according to the tourism development that the region demands. “In keeping with its mission, and in response to the needs that arise at the San Rafael Airport, we believe it is necessary to ask you to carry out all the necessary actions to promote the integration of San Rafael with the rest of the country. Currently we only have connectivity with Buenos Aires. The improvements will result in connections outside of Buenos Aires, and the option that most interests the southern province is the downtown area (Santa Fe and Córdoba), especially the city of Rosario. San Rafael is like an island without a port, which is difficult to reach”, points out the request submitted to Aeropuertos Argentina 2000, the Ministry of Transportation of the Nation and the ORSNA.

The improvements at the San Rafael Airport are aimed at optimizing the runway to receive large aircraft such as those used by most airlines today, which is why they find it necessary from the airport concessionaire to boost the request requirement. that will mark a benefit for tourism and the development of the region. Regarding the frequencies of flights in the San Rafael Air Terminal, the air carrier Aerolíneas Argentinas was going to expand its flights during December 2020 to two weekly frequencies between Buenos Aires and San Rafael, and by January 2021 it has announced a third weekly frequency. The airport has suffered a strong decrease in connectivity for a region that was used to receiving a daily flight, bearing in mind the 2020-2021 tourist opening, so they recognize how important it is to connect with large centers such as Buenos Aires, Rosario, Córdoba, among others. From the different agents that demand more assistance, they detail that an increase in flights would lower the costs of airfares, taking into account the monopolization of the market concentrated in Aerolíneas Argentinas and prices do not fall below AR$ 8,000 pesos in a ticket one way fare only.

Despite the potential of the destination, the lack of works together with the operational limitations at San Rafael Airport, does not allow more flights to be developed. For this reason, the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (CCIA) has claimed the need to continue the tasks started for the expansion of the local airport. A runway capable of supporting larger aircraft such as the Boeing 737 is essential for the air station, but they are accompanied by complementary works to improve the airport building and surroundings. From the CCIA, promoters of this initiative, they emphasize that this will allow «the arrival of more commercial flights and new routes to and from our department, improving and facilitating access to the city». Likewise, the possibility of new routes with Santa Fe and Córdoba to enhance the existing one to Buenos Aires and even the arrival of low cost routes that have shown interest in the destination, but who cannot disembark due to infrastructure issues, are also highlighted.

The concessionaire Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 has carried out complementary studies between the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 that mark an important step for the completion of works. Now an urgent meeting has been requested for the treatment of infrastructure works to the Ministry of Planning and Public Infrastructure of the Province of Mendoza, to initiate the claim with a presentation of the positive impact that the San Rafael Airport can have once concluded the works claimed.

SLM estrena Boeing 777 a Schiphol

AW | 2020 12 19 21:27 | AIRLINES ROUTES

Surinam Airlines primer vuelo comercial Boeing 777

Surinam Airways_Isologotype

Suriname Airlines first commercial flight Boeing 777

The Surinamese airline Surinam Airlines (SLM) made its first commercial flight with its new Boeing 777-200ER this Wednesday, December 16, which has made a pure cargo flight to Amsterdam/Schiphol Airport; But on Thursday, December 17, 2020 he made his first flight with passengers. The Boeing 777-200ER aircraft acquired since last year has required the processing and fine-tuning of the new aircraft for direct non-stop transatlantic flights. The aircraft has been reconditioned to fly to Amsterdam/Schiphol without deviation. Because the aircraft’s ETOPS category had expired, it could not fly the shortest route across the Atlantic. This type of aircraft requires a separate permit as it is a twin-engine aircraft, allowing it to cross the ocean without flying a short distance from alternative airports. Due to the so-called ETOPS certification, Surinam Airways could only fly to the Netherlands by taking a route along the East Coast of the United States, which meant a detour of many hours. But the surinamese company has conditioned the aircraft to carry out the most direct route and in the shortest time. Meanwhile, Surinam Airways has contracted an Air Belgium Airbus 340-300 to reinforce the transatlantic route.

The new addition of the Boeing 777-200ER registration PZ-TCU has a long history behind it, with eighteen years old it has previously flown for Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand. Now SLM will mainly use the aircraft on the route to Paramaribo-Amsterdam.

SLM lanceert Boeing 777 op Schiphol

Suriname Airlines eerste commerciële vlucht Boeing 777

Surinam Airways_Isologotype_001

AW | 2020 12 19 14:50 | AVIATION SAFETY / AVIATION ORGANISMS / GOVERNMENT

Investigadores Senado fallan por manipulación seguridad aviación

US-Senate-Logo.svg

Senate Report on Boeing 737 MAX

Senate investigators find aviation security tampering

Boeing 737 MAX_Isologotype

A new report from the United States Senate terminates allegations against the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and The Boeing Company against tampering with tests of the Boeing 737 MAX during recertification. It’s one of many allegations in a damning new report from Capitol Hill. The Boeing company and the Federal Aviation Administration worked together to manipulate the recertification tests of the 737 MAX model line after two air crashes on 10/2018 and 03/2019, according to a new report from the Transportation Commission. of the United States Senate. According to the Senate document, Boeing has inappropriately trained some FAA test pilots to achieve a desired result during recertification tests, and some were even conducted in simulators that were not equipped to recreate the same conditions as accidents. . In doing so, the authors of the Senate report say that «the FAA and Boeing were trying to cover up important information that may have contributed to the 737 MAX tragedies». The FAA is also accused of retaliating against whistleblowers, possibly obstructing the Office of Inspector General’s investigation into the accidents.

Senate Report

The 102-page Boeing 737 MAX Report, released Friday 12/18, was compiled by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation and is based on information from 50 whistleblowers, interviews with FAA personnel, and more than 15,000 pages of documents. The new complaint comes a month after the FAA has approved the 737 MAX to return to flight, and now, airlines around the world are beginning to reintroduce the plane into their fleets and scheduled flights.

Boeing’s own failures that led to the 737 MAX crashes have been fully probed and well documented, the new Senate report is one of the most intimate looks at the problems within the FAA regulator that the aerospace company was supposed to maintain. under control. «Our findings are concerning. The report details a number of significant examples of deficiencies in aviation security oversight and failed leadership at the FAA. It is clear that the agency requires constant oversight to ensure that its work to protect the public Flying to run completely and properly», said Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS), who chairs the Committee, in a statement.

FAA position

The FAA’s position in a recent statement said it will «carefully review the document, which the Committee acknowledges contains a number of unsubstantiated allegations. Working closely with other international regulators, the FAA conducted a deliberate and comprehensive review of the document. 737 MAX. We are confident that the safety issues that played a role in the tragic accidents related to Lion Air flight JT-610 and Ethiopian Airlines flight ET-302 have been addressed through the required design changes and independently approved by the FAA and its partners».

Boeing statement

For its part, Boeing said in a prepared statement that it will «take the Committee’s findings seriously and will continue to review the report in its entirety. Boeing is committed to enhancing aviation safety, strengthening our safety culture and rebuilding trust with our partners. customers, regulators and the flying public», the company wrote.

Boeing had rushed through development so that the 737 MAX line could keep up with rival Airbus, with the A320NEO line announcing a more fuel-efficient aircraft in 2011. Rather than developing a new aircraft From scratch, Boeing modified the 737 Next Generation with larger and more fuel-efficient engines, but in that crazy flight to reach the top in technological and commercial advancement, the American company failed to present a totally safe product. for air travel users, a costly outcome that has involved many in an unprecedented disaster in the commercial aviation industry.

Gobierno buscaría apoyo para resurgir Mexicana Aviación

mexicana_logos

AW | 2020 12 19 12:02 | AIRPORTS / GOVERNMENT

Transporte Argentina garantiza operaciones low cost Aeroparque

Argentine low cost in Aeroparque

Argentine transport guarantees low cost operations Aeroparque

After the continuous complaints about the El Palomar International Airport, the Minister of Transport of Argentina, Mario Meoni, announced that said air station will not be reopened due to the concern of the employees and users of air transport. Faced with a fluctuating position of the Transportation portfolio regarding the continuity or not of the low cost air station, the budget companies Flybondi Líneas Aéreas and JetSmart Airlines Argentina have started their transitory operations from the Ezeiza International Airport while waiting to obtain the permits slots at the Jorge Newbery Airport in the City of Buenos Aires. The Minister of Transport has called for tranquility and announced that the low cost will begin operating from Aeroparque towards the end of February 2021.

The Ministry of Transportation maintains that the regionalization of flights from the reconditioned Jorge Newbery Airport will allow increasing the prospects of connections with the interior of Argentina. Budget airlines will conduct domestic flights from this airstation, while regional flights will continue to be evaluated on which airline will operate those routes.

Claims El Palomar

Main leaders of Juntos por el Cambio (JXC) participated this Thursday 17/12 in a new march with residents and merchants of El Palomar Airport, days after the Government decided that this airport will only be operational for military flights. The closure of El Palomar generated strong crossings between the ruling party and the opposition in recent days. The truth is that the demonstration organized by residents of El Palomar continues to demand the continuity of the air station, which has offered passengers the convenience of being a low-cost airport with the operational advantages that it has represented for transport users and airlines of budget.

Interjet suspensión vuelos

AW | 2020 12 19 11:27 | AIRLINES / AVIATION ORGANISMS / GOVERNMENT

Aerolínea cancela vuelos desde el 18-31 Diciembre 2020

Interjet_Isologotype.svg

Interjet flight suspension

Airline cancels flights from 18-31 December 2020

The debts corner the Mexican airline Interjet, which cannot get off the ground when the company has not resolved the payment to the employees of six fortnight’s salaries as well as the fuel payment owed. After an impasse from this Friday 12/18 to 12/31, all Interjet flights will be canceled. The cancellation of the flights is due to the collection of debts dragged by Interjet, against which the Federal Prosecutor’s Office for the Consumer (Profeco) issued a risk alert. The airline has a debt of almost MX $ 1,200 million Mexican pesos in fuel, and with Airports and Auxiliary Services (AYSA). While the Mexican Air Space Navigation Services (SENEAM) and the Tax Administration Service (SAT) have a debt of MX $ 2,947 million pesos.

At the beginning of 12/2020, the auditing agency Profeco had warned consumers about the risk of establishing commercial relationships with Interjet, due to problems such as: route suspension, recurrent cancellations of their flights, granting of thousands of vouchers that have not been possible. make effective for new cancellations and failure to pay compensation. After the lack of liquidity to maintain a minimum operational capacity regarding the payment of fuel, Profeco «considers it sufficient to warn of the imminent risk of affecting the economy of a group of consumers». For its part, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) decreed the suspension of Interjet ticket sales at travel agencies. The association announced that the airline was out of its Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP) system, through which tickets are sold and remitted with agencies.

Australian airline agrees to purchase for US$ 65 million

Gobierno España al rescate de aéreas

AW | 2020 12 19 10:40 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

Ayudas podrían aplicarse a otras aerolíneas españolas

Government of Spain to the rescue of airlines

Aid could be applied to other Spanish airlines

The Government of Spain has initiated complementary feasibility studies to expand aid for the rescue of strategic companies and sectors. The Spanish State is analyzing doubling the amount of the rescue fund, which would rise to € 20,000 million Euros, after the Council of Ministers approved a € 10,000 million fund last summer.

Immersed in the global crisis are a score of companies with liquidity problems where the State Society of Industrial Participations (SEPI) has on its radar to be recapitalized by the Spanish Government. The SEPI has represented being an organ of aid to airlines among other companies to overcome the crisis of the pandemic. The airline Air Europa has received loans worth € 475 million. In the case of Iberia, at the moment, they do not evaluate acquiring aid, but in the future they are not ruled out. A bailout of Iberia would allow the Government a greater force to press for the purchase of Air Europa, whose payment in cash was agreed to postpone until 2026 when the Hidalgo airline has been able to return the money from the State within the term it promised. Iberia and Air Europa, having achieved the bulk of their benefits from the ‘business’ class of working travelers on flights to Latin America, are the two airlines that face a more difficult scenario to recover their previous profitability, as Preferente revealed a few days ago. In particular cases such as Plus Ultra Airlines, Wamos, Grupo Barceló (Ávoris parent company) and Globalia will receive financial aid.
