Boeing metaverso para su próxima revolución digital

Boeing_Isologotype

No», expresó Richard Aboulafia.

Boeing perspective digital design

Boeing metaverse for its next digital revolution

The Boeing Company announced on Friday 12/17 that it wants to build its next airplane in the virtual world. The American builder continues with an ambitious new strategy to unify expanding design, production and air service operations under a single digital ecosystem, in just two years. Critics say Boeing has repeatedly made similar bold promises about a digital revolution, with mixed results. But experts say the overarching goals of improving quality and safety have grown in urgency and importance as the company tackles multiple threats.

AW-Boeing 787_0001

The aircraft maker is entering 2022 struggling to reassert its engineering dominance after the Boeing 737 MAX crisis while laying the groundwork for a future aircraft program over the next decade, a US$ 15 billion gamble. It also aims to prevent future manufacturing problems, such as the structural defects that have plagued its Boeing 787 Dreamliner line over the past year and present. «It’s about strengthening engineering. We’re talking about changing the way we work across the company», Boeing Chief Engineer Greg Hyslop said in his first interview in nearly two years.

After years of fierce competition in the aviation market, the need to fulfill bulging order books has opened a new front in the war from Boeing’s factories in the United States and with Airbus in Europe. A huge aircraft backlog portfolio has increased lead times for deliveries to customers around the world.

Airbus Chief Executive Officer Guillaume Faury is committed to inventing new production systems and harnessing the power of data to optimize his industrial system. Boeing’s approach thus far has been marked by incremental advancements within aircraft-specific programs or tools, rather than the systemic overhaul that characterizes Greg Hyslop’s drive today. The simultaneous push by both aircraft giants is emblematic of a digital revolution happening globally, as automakers like Ford Motor Company and social media companies like Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. change the job. and they play in an immersive virtual world sometimes called the metaverse. So how does the metaverse work? It is a shared digital space that often uses virtual reality or augmented reality and accessible through the Internet, in aviation. Like Airbus, Boeing will be looking for its next new aircraft to build and link virtual 3D replicas of the aircraft’s digital twins and the production system capable of running simulations. The digital mockups are backed by a digital thread that ties together every piece of information about the aircraft from its infancy, from airline requirements to millions of pieces and thousands of pages of certification documents, extending deep into the supply chain.

The revision of outdated paper-based practices could bring powerful change. More than 70% of quality problems at Boeing can be traced back to some kind of design problem, Greg Hyslop said. Boeing believes that such tools will be critical in getting a new aircraft to market from inception in just four to five years. «You get speed, you get better quality, better communication, and better responsiveness when problems occur. When the supply base quality is better, when the aircraft construction blends more seamlessly, when rework is minimized, financial performance will come from that, «said Greg Hyslop

Huge challenge

Skeptics point to technical problems in Boeing’s 777X mini-jumbo and the T-7A RedHawk military training aircraft, which were developed using digital tools. Boeing has also put too much emphasis on shareholder returns at the expense of engineering dominance, and continues to cut spending on research and development (R&D), said Teal Group analyst Richard Aboulafia. «Is it worth pursuing? Of course. Will it solve all your problems? No», said Richard Aboulafia.

Giants like aircraft parts maker Spirit AeroSystems have invested in digital technology. Major aircraft manufacturers have partnerships with French software maker Dassault Systemes, but hundreds of smaller vendors around the world lack the capital or human resources to make big leaps. Many have been weakened by the Boeing 737 MAX crises and the pandemic, which followed a decade of price pressure from Boeing or Airbus. «They’re not just telling us what hardware we can buy, but now they’re going to specify all this fancy digital junk that goes on top of it», said one supply chain executive.

Boeing has realized that digital technology alone is not a panacea. It must come with organizational and cultural changes throughout the company, say industry sources. The American builder recently hired veteran engineer Linda Hapgood to oversee the «digital transformation,» which an industry source said was backed by more than 100 engineers. Linda Hapgood is best known for turning black and white paper drawings of Boeing 767 tanker wiring packages into 3D images and then outfitting mechanics with HoloLens augmented reality tablets and headsets. Quality improved by 90%, said one informant. In her new role, Linda Hapgood hired engineers who worked on a digital twin for a now scrapped mid-market aircraft known as the NMA. She also draws on lessons learned from the MQ-25 aerial refueling drone and the T-7A Red Hawk. Boeing built the first T-7A aircraft in simulation, following a model-based design. The T-7A was launched on the market in just 36 months. Still, the program is dealing with parts shortages, design delays, and additional testing requirements.

Boeing has a running start with its Boeing 777X wing factory in Washington State, where the design and optimization of the robot was first done digitally. But the broader program is years behind and mired in certification challenges. «This is a long game. Each of these efforts was addressing part of the problem. But now what we want to do is do it end-to-end», concludes Greg Hyslop.

Aerolíneas vs tecnología 5G

AW | 2021 12 16 09:22 | AVIATION TECHNOLOGY / AVIATION SAFETY

Advierten tecnología inalámbrica 5G peligrosa

AW-5G_001

Airlines vs 5G technology

Dangerous 5G wireless technology warned

Major U.S. airlines warned on 12/15 Wednesday that AT&T and Verizon Communications’ plans to use spectrum for 5G wireless services could be highly detrimental to air travel and cost air passengers US$ 1.6 billion annually in scheduled flight delays.

The Airlines for America (A4A) trade group said that if a new Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) directive to address potential interference from wireless transmissions had been in effect in 2019, «approximately 345,000 passenger flights, 32 million passengers and 54.00 cargo flights would have been affected in the form of delayed flights, diversions or cancellations», said the A4A association.

In a hearing on Wednesday 12/15, the US Senate has urged airlines to work to find a resolution. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said the 5G wireless problem «is the biggest and most damaging potential problem we face. We want nothing more than to work to find a solution». Southwest Airlines Chief Executive Gary Kelly said the FAA directive «would significantly affect our operations once it is implemented on January 5 [2022]».

Wireless operators are ready to start using spectrum in just three weeks. Last week, the FAA issued new Airworthiness Directives (AD) warning that interference from the 5G wireless spectrum could result in flight deviations. The aviation industry and the FAA have raised significant concerns about possible 5G interference with sensitive aircraft electronics, such as radio altimeters.

In November 2021, AT&T and Verizon agreed to delay the commercial launch of C-Band wireless service until January 5, 2022 after the FAA raised concerns. They also took precautionary measures for six months to limit interference. Aviation industry groups said they were insufficient to address aviation safety concerns.

Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA), a wireless trade group, said that «the aviation industry scaremongering is based on completely discredited information and deliberate distortions of the facts». It added that 5G operates safely and without causing harmful interference to aviation operations in nearly 40 countries around the world.

A4A said the FAA directive would materially disrupt the airlines’ operations, which freight operators estimate the directive would have cost them US$ 400 million annually. The group said the annual impact cost to passengers is about US$ 1.59 billion of travel delays.

Wireless operators have shown no interest in further spectrum delays and the industry paid more than US$ 80 billion to acquire it.

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chair Jessica Rosenworcel, who did not immediately comment on the airlines’ analysis, has said that she believes the issues can be safely resolved and spectrum used.

«Airline customers rely on airlines to transport time-sensitive perishables such as pharmaceuticals, vaccines, organs, critical parts of the supply chain, and many other high-value items. The lack of serious mitigations by airlines 5G telecommunications companies to address interference problems will disrupt and significantly damage the economy», said the A4A association.

FAA directives mandate revision of aircraft and helicopter flight manuals to prohibit some operations that require radio altimeter data when in the presence of C 5G wireless broadband signals. The FAA remains in discussions with the FCC, the White House and industry officials on the precise outlines of any limitations.

Primer vuelo 100% SAF

AW | 2021 12 11 10:33 | AVIATION TECHNOLOGY

Primer vuelo histórico combustible 100% sostenible
United Airlines realiza primer vuelos SAF

First flight 100% SAF

First historic flight 100% sustainable fuel
United Airlines makes first SAF flights

A United Airlines flight has inaugurated the first flight from Chicago to Washington DC with more than 100 passengers using SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), an aviation fuel made from 60 raw materials such as vegetable oils. The aircraft used, a United Airlines Boeing 737-8 MAX, used 1,892.71 liters of SAF in one engine and the same amount of conventional jet fuel in the other, in order to further demonstrate that there are no operational differences between the two. This was made possible because GE, CFM and Engine Alliance engines can run on this environmentally friendly fuel.

In 2021, commercial airlines used about 215,768 million liters of fuel. By swapping oil for SAF, taking into account the entire life cycle of fuel, the aviation industry could reduce its contribution of carbon per fuel by up to 80%, according to industry associations such as the Air Transport Action Group ( ATAG) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Currently, airlines can only use a maximum of 50% SAF on board. The sustainable fuel used on this Friday 12/10 flight is ready for use and is compatible with existing aircraft fleets. The aircraft made history by being powered by LEAP-1B engines developed by CFM International, a GE Aviation company, and Safran Aircraft Engines. In parallel, GE has also been investigating the use of SAF in its engines: Etihad Airways and British Airways have used a mixture containing this fuel on their recent flights. In turn, GE’s aviation unit is also working with Emirates on plans to fly using 100% SAF in 2022.

SAF is a sustainable aviation fuel that can be manufactured from 60 different raw materials, including vegetable oils, algae, fats, waste streams, alcohols, sugars, captured CO2 and other alternative sources and processes.

“It was an important step on the aviation industry’s path to achieving zero carbon emissions. I am proud of GE’s role in making this flight possible”, explained John Slattery, CEO of GE Aviation and one of the passengers on board. In this way, what at first glance seemed like one more flight to Washington became a milestone for the future of aviation and a great step towards combating climate change.

PW actualización motor para A320NEO

AW | 2021 12 03 13:16 | INDUSTRY / AVIATION TECHNOLOGY

Pratt & Whitney GTP construye nuevo motor para línea A320

AW-P&W_Isologotype

PW powerplant upgrade for A320NEO

Pratt & Whitney GTP builds new engine for A320 line

Airbus_Isologotype_svg

Pratt & Whitney (P&W) is building a new version of its next-generation jet engine as Airbus Group looks to a post-pandemic future. Jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney said Thursday 11/02 that it is rolling out a new version of its next-generation geared GTF Advantage turbofan engine for Airbus A320NEO-family, its largest commercial customer, as the European aircraft maker projects a surge. of online production.

The GTF Advantage is based on the geared turbofan engine that has been in service for five years and increases fuel economy by 1%, to a 17% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to the Previous-generation engines, the company told reporters at a media meeting at its East Hartford site.

Pratt & Whitney posted a 25% sales increase in the third quarter as commercial aviation recovers from the effects of the pandemic. Airlines are under pressure to cut carbon emissions. Since their launch in 2016, GTF engines have saved more than 600 million gallons of fuel while reducing carbon emissions by more than 6 million metric tons, said Pratt & Whitney. «This will continue to multiply and GTF Advantage is the next step for us», said Tom Pelland, Senior Vice President, GTF Programs.

The engine, which will be available by January 2024, will be compatible with 100% sustainable aviation fuel when it enters service. The industry has set a schedule for 2050 to achieve net zero emissions. Global aviation generates about 2% of all human-induced carbon dioxide emissions, according to the Air Transport Action Group, an industry association. Aviation is responsible for 12% of CO2 emissions from all transportation sources, compared to 74% from cars and trucks, the group said.

Airbus told suppliers in May 2021 that it is looking to produce 45 of its popular A320 narrow-body jets a month by the end of this year and asked for a rate of 64 by mid-2023. It is asking suppliers for 70 a month by the beginning of 2024. «In the longer term, Airbus is investigating opportunities for rates as high as 75 by 2025», said the Toulouse, France-based manufacturer. «The aviation sector is beginning to recover from the COVID-19 crisis. The message to our supplier community provides visibility to the entire industrial ecosystem to secure the necessary capabilities and be ready when market conditions call for it», he said Executive Director Guillaume Faury in May 2021.

United Technologies Corp., the former parent company of Pratt & Whitney, invested US$ 10 billion over twenty years to design and build the geared turbofan engine that was first installed in airline fleets in 2016. Christopher Calio, President of Pratt & Whitney, said the company is not disclosing how much has been spent to develop GTF Advantage. United Technologies rebranded itself last year as Raytheon Technologies Corp., an aviation and defense manufacturer based in Massachusetts, United States.

Pratt & Whitney competes with CFM International, co-owned by France’s Safran SA and General Electric Company, which leads the market share in the A320 program. Pratt & Whitney expects GTF Advantage to help grow the manufacturer’s order book and maintain or improve its delivery quota, said Chief Customer Officer Rick Deurloo.

«Pratt & Whitney does not anticipate that commercial aviation will return to 2019 levels until 2023 or 2024. With widespread vaccines and the use of masks, that perspective has not changed despite the Delta variant and the more recent Omicron threat. Regardless of the news about this variant and its virulence, I think we are in a much better place as an industry and society to handle our way through it», said Christofer Calio.

In the long term, the global airline fleet is projected to grow 4.5% annually, said Geoff Hunt, Chief Engineer at Pratt & Whitney. «The technology we invest in today is going to be critical to the performance of that fleet by the middle of the next decade. And of course, that fleet will remain in service for 20 years beyond that, so it’s really important that Let’s continue this progression of technology», said Geoff Hunt.

AW-Starlink__Isologotype

SpaceX satellite Wi-Fi on board

SpaceX Chief Elon Musk recently promised that he would offer half gigabit Wi-Fi speed on airplanes allowing access to the Internet transmitted by Starlink satellites. SpaceX has begun testing its in-flight Wi-Fi service provided by the Starlink division for commercial airlines, with the goal of transmitting the Internet from its constellation of satellites to airplanes. In June 2021 SpaceX announced that it was in talks with several airlines to provide Starlink’s satellite Internet network for a faster in-flight Wi-Fi experience. However, the company did not offer any details on the project’s commercialization schedule.

SpaceX aims to offer low-latency internet connectivity with a half-gigabit over-the-air output. Right now, two of the biggest names in the industry are Viasat and Intelsat, which serve as providers of satellite broadband for onboard Wi-Fi. However, two of Starlink’s direct rivals based on the core infrastructure are UK’s OneWeb and Telesat.

Starlink’s Vice President of Commercial Sales, Jonathan Hofeller, has now revealed that the company is testing the first version of its internal antenna on airplanes, but has again avoided providing a concrete schedule for the commercial launch. Speaking at the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX)/ IFSA EXPO Thought Leadership conference, Jonathan Hofeller mentioned that the company wants to offer its satellite internet service to airlines in the shortest time. An APEX blog post quotes Jonathan Hofeller as saying that «Starlink is going one by one to each country and their ongoing disaster relief work is accelerating their entry into some markets».

Compared to established players in the In-Flight Connectivity (IFC) market, Starlink has a key advantage with its approach to satellite internet. Existing stakeholders depend on the Internet carried by satellites floating in geostationary orbit. Starlink, on the other hand, will offer Internet connectivity from its constellation of satellites in lower Earth orbit. Hofeller had previously claimed that the Starlink receiving antennas installed on airplanes would be a derivative of the existing ground-based receivers that recently began to appear at Tesla charging stations as well. One of the biggest concerns with aircraft installation is the durability aspect of satellite Internet receivers. Interestingly, an FCC app that was unearthed earlier this year shed some light on mobile receivers that they will be much more durable when it comes to operating in greater extremes of heat and cold. Another advantage that Starlink boasts over its rivals is in the numbers game. Hofeller mentioned at the APEX conference that Starlink already commands a group of LEO satellites whose number is ten times that of today’s geostationary satellites. While a definitive date for the market discovery is unknown, the Starlink executive revealed that the company is operating a fleet of 1,800 satellites spread across 20 countries to date. However, Starlink’s ambitions could be stalled due to problems with the Starship rocket engines, something so dire that CEO Elon Musk feared it would push SpaceX to the brink of bankruptcy.

Airbus primer estudio SAF

AW | 2021 11 30 08:49 | AVIATION TECHNOLOGY / INDUSTRY

Airbus first SAF study

First study 100% sustainable passenger aircraft emissions

Initial findings from a first global study on the impact of 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) on both engines of a commercial aircraft have provided promising initial results. The ECLIF3 study, involving Airbus Group, Rolls-Royce, German research center DLR, and SAF producer Neste, marks the first time that 100% SAF has been measured simultaneously on both engines of a commercial passenger aircraft- an airplane. Airbus A350 powered by Rolls-Royce Trent. XWB engines.

In-flight emissions testing and associated ground testing in the ECLIF3 program began earlier this year and have recently resumed. The interdisciplinary team, which also includes researchers from the National Research Council of Canada and the University of Manchester, plans to publish their results in academic journals towards the end of next year and 2023.

The study findings will support efforts currently underway at Airbus and Rolls-Royce to ensure that the aviation sector is ready for large-scale use of SAF as part of a broader initiative to decarbonize the industry. Currently, aircraft can only operate on a 50% mix of SAF and conventional jet fuel, but both companies support the push to certify 100% SAF use.

In April 2021, the A350 flew three flights over the Mediterranean Sea pursued by a DLR Falcon chaser plane to compare the in-flight emissions of kerosene and Neste’s hydroprocessed fatty acid and esters (HEFA) sustainable fuel. The team also conducted compliance testing using 100% SAF and no operational issues were experienced.

In-flight emissions testing using 100% SAF and a HEFA/Jet A-1 fuel mixture resumed this month, while ground emissions tests were also conducted to quantify the benefits of SAF on local air quality. The research team found that SAF releases fewer particulates than conventional kerosene under all tested engine operating conditions, pointing to the possibility of reducing climate impact and improving air quality around airports.

Additionally, SAF has a lower density but higher energy content per kilogram of fuel compared to conventional kerosene, which brings some aircraft fuel efficiency advantages due to lower fuel consumption and lower mass. of fuel on board to accomplish the same mission. A detailed analysis is being carried out by the team.

“The engines and fuel systems can be tested on the ground, but the only way to collect the full set of emissions data necessary for this program to be successful is to fly an airplane under real-world conditions. Flight testing of the A350 offers the advantage of characterizing direct and indirect engine emissions, including particulate matter from behind a high-altitude aircraft”, said Steven Le Moing, New Energy Program Manager at Aerobús.

Simon Burr, Director of Product Development and Technology, Rolls-Royce, Civil Aerospace, said: “This research adds to the tests that we have already performed on our engines, both on the ground and in the air, which have encountered no obstacles from engineering for our engines work 100% SAF. If we are to truly decarbonize long-haul air travel, then 100% SAF is critical and we are committed to supporting your certification for the service».

The DLR Falcon hunter aircraft is equipped with multiple probes to measure emissions at cruise level up to a distance of just 100 meters from the A350 and feed them with scientific instrumentation for analysis.

“SAF has been shown to have a significantly lower carbon footprint over its life cycle compared to conventional jet fuel and we now see that it is also advantageous in reducing non-CO 2 related effects. Tests like these continue to develop our understanding of 100% SAF, its use in flight and we are seeing positive signs of its potential in climate mitigation. We look forward to studying data from the second series of ECLIF3 flights, which were restarted with a first pursuit flight over the Mediterranean earlier this month”, said Markus Fischer, member of DLR’s Aeronautical Divisional Board.

In 2015, DLR ran the ECLIF1 campaign, researching alternative fuels with its Falcon and A320 ATRA research aircraft. These investigations continued in 2018 with the ECLIF2 campaign in which the A320 ATRA flew on a mixture of standard jet fuel and up to 50% HEFA. This research showed the advantageous emission performance of fuel blends up to 50% SAF and paved the way for 100% SAF test flights for ECLIF3.

Aceleración controles biométricos

AW | 2021 11 17 09:23 | AIRPORTS / AVIATION TECHNOLOGY

Acceleration of biometric controls

Pandemic accelerates acceptance of biometric controls at airports

The introduction of new control measures at airports, together with the strong recovery in traffic, is leading to long queues at airports that are taking the patience of many passengers. Passengers are more receptive to this recognition technology in order to speed up the queues, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Both the large sending airports such as Berlin-Brandenburg (Germany) and receivers such as Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) have suffered a real traffic jam these days.

If before a passenger, at peak times, took 1.5 hours in travel processes, now they invest 3 hours. The situation is escalating in importance, so much so that it has largely starred in the Global Passenger Survey (GPS) 2021, prepared by the International Association of International Air Transport (IATA). The two main conclusions drawn from the study are that: In order to streamline travel processes, passengers want to use biometric identification (recognition of the person through physiological, physical or behavioral personal data). They also claim that they want to spend less time queuing.

“Passengers want technology to be used in a deeper way in order to spend less time ‘being processed’ or queuing. And they are willing to use biometric data to achieve this”, says Nick Carreen, IATA’s Senior Vice President of Operations and Security. The manager emphasizes that, at this time after the pandemic, there is a window of opportunity to offer efficiency improvements for passengers, airlines, airports and governments.

Aviación avanza emisiones sostenibles

AW | 2021 11 14 05:27 | AVIATION TECHNOLOGY

Aviation advances sustainable emissions

NASA tests sustainable aviation fuel emissions

A team of scientists from NASA, The Boeing Company, and Aerodyne Research recently met at Boeing Field in Seattle, Washington (WA), to measure emissions from the 2021 Boeing ecoDemonstrator aircraft, an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-9 MAX with CFM engines. International LEAP-1B low emission. NASA, Boeing, and other ecoDemonstrator partners quickly recognized that while the plane was in Seattle, there was an opportunity to test the emissions from the low-emission engines. The research team took things further by also organizing the use of 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in one of the LEAP-1B engines. This was the first time anyone would capture data on particulate matter in emissions from not just a LEAP-1B low-emission engine, but also one that was burning 100% SAF.

NASA’s Langley Research Center Mobile Laboratory provided researchers with specialized capabilities with the ability to conduct these tests in the field in Seattle. The lab’s comprehensive instrumentation suite analyzed not only gaseous emissions, but also particulates (soot and other aerosols) using a custom probe designed to interact with the blast fence behind the aircraft.

«I appreciate how our partners in the aviation industry are thinking long-term, about being transparent about the sector’s environmental impacts. And that we are making strategic investments to move towards a more sustainable approach», said Richard Moore, Atmospheric Scientist at the NASA Langley Research Center. Researchers conducted multiple tests to compare emissions from traditional 100% Jet A, 100% SAF, and SAF plus Jet A blends to quantify reductions in engine emissions and the effects of fuel alone. Preliminary results look promising. It was discerned in real time that the combination of 100% SAF with LEAP-1B engines on the ecoDemonstrator aircraft significantly reduced soot particle emissions across the entire engine power range.

«The results that we are getting from these tests make me hopeful for the future. That we can possibly innovate ourselves outside of the climate situation, that is becoming too clear,» said Richard Moore. The researchers will continue to study the results and feed the data into air quality and wake models for years to come.
