AIRGWAYS ® Icon-AW

China Southern eyes Africa, South America expansion

China Southern Airlines (CZ, Guangzhou) is planning to expand into South America and Africa over the next five years the carrier’s Senior Vice President (Marketing) Wu Guoxiang has told the South China Morning Post.

In an interview, Wu said the carrier was looking at Johannesburg O.R. Tambo for its next African destination after Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta, which it currently serves from Guangzhou 2x weekly using A330-200 metal. In South America, China Southern is looking at developing services to points in Brazil and Argentina, he added without mentioning specifics.

China Southern’s international operations currently focus on East Asia, Oceania, Europe, and North America (the United States and Canada only). Direct flights between China and Africa and between China and South America are currently dominated by non-Chinese carriers although flag carrier Air China (CA, Beijing Capital) has attempted to gain a foothold through the launch of its own services from Beijing Capital to each of Johannesburg O.R. Tambo and São Paulo Guarulhos (via Madrid Barajas).

As it stands, Africa and South America are becoming increasingly attractive destinations for Chinese capital given China’s thirst for natural resources and need for new export markets.

According to an Ernst & Young (EY) Africa Attractiveness report published last month, since 2005, China has invested in 293 FDI projects in Africa, resulting in an investment outlay of USD66.4 billion. Aside from general trade and Foreign Direct Investments, Chinese companies and state-related entities have been involved in both financing and building numerous infrastructure projects across Africa including ports, roads, railways, dams, telecom networks, power stations, and airports. The primary benefactors of Chinese capital have been Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, South Africa, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Angola, Niger, Zambia, and Morocco.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, China is looking to realize USD500 billion in trade and USD250 billion in investment by 2025. In Brazil the focus has been primarily on infrastructural projects – the country’s massive rail network and its untapped potential in particular. Beijing has similar interests in Argentina where in 2014, it agreed to provide Argentina with over USD20 billion in loans to finance numerous infrastructure projects, including new railway lines and hydropower dams. Last month, Buenos Aires signed a framework agreement with the China Development Bank (CDB) for the rehabilitation of the Belgrano Cargas (II) railway.

Under the deal, the CDB bank will finance the acquisition of railway equipment, works and services for a narrow-gauge train with a total extension of 1,400 km. The Belgrano Cargas (II) initiative connects the Provinces of Argentina’s so-called Mesopotamia area. A\W

The IATA annual meeting in Cancun, JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes said that with the success of its ‘Mint’ premium cabin service on transcontinental flights, he sees a niche in the transatlantic market for the «premium customer», and the A321 «would allow us to do something a little different» than budget carriers like Norwegian Air and WOW.

China Southern Airlines contempla destinos de Brasil y Argentina

AW | 2017 06 10 05:32 | AIRLINES ROUTES

AIRGWAYS ® Icon-AW

China Southern Airlines eyes Brazil and Argentina destinations

China Southern Airlines eyes Brazil and Argentina destinations to expand its global reach

Asia’s largest carrier by passengers flown also plans to start service to Johannesburg in the wake of its 2015 inauguration of Nairobi flights

Asia’s largest carrier in terms of passengers flown plans to establish passenger routes to Brazil and Argentina within the next five years, completing its worldwide reach, senior vice president of marketing Wu Guoxiang said in an interview. Meanwhile, the airline also plans to start passenger service to Johannesburg, South Africa, after inaugurating service to Nairobi, Kenya in 2015, to build out its reach in Africa. The airline expects to have passenger service to three to five destinations each in South America and Africa within the next five years, Wu said.

China Southern is making the “transfer market” a key component of its network expansion, referring to the strategy that helped make Emirates Airline one of the world’s most formidable competitors among global airlines.

Leveraging its large domestic market – at the centre of a rapidly urbanising megalopolis with a population of more than 100 million people – gives China Southern an edge over other airlines pursuing growth by developing a transfer market, Wu said. Higher passenger volume relative to other carriers in the region gives China Southern the ability to entice customers looking for the cheapest way to cross hemispheres.

“Because we have a huge amount of domestic passengers, so we have the power and opportunity to launch new routes,” Wu said. “We’ve spent about 10 years building our international network, so for many new destinations we’re a newcomer, so we must let the market know us. The simple way is to provide a lower price.”

Wu declined to comment on reports that China Southern is in talks to sell a stake in itself worth US$200 million to American Airlines, saying only that the two airlines are talking about “how to cooperate in the future”. Negotiations are focused on “code-sharing, network coordination, ground-handling, maintenance and training”.

As for making a formal switch from the Sky Team airline alliance to the Oneworld alliance, which includes American, Wu said: “Up to now, we have no decision about whether to switch alliances.” Wu spoke with the South China Morning Post in Chicago, one stop on a “world tour” touting the airline’s home base of Guangzhou.

As part of the tour, the city’s vice mayor, Cai Chaolin, met with his counterpart, Chicago deputy mayor Steve Koch, and the heads of some of Chicago’s multinational companies, including Boeing Co and Walgreens Boots Alliance. Their aim was to attract potential participants to the 2017 Fortune Global Forum, set to convene in Guangzhou in December.

Reflecting China Southern’s global expansion, Cai and Guangzhou officials will continue city-hopping over the next few months, with plans to visit London and Munich.

In a nod to the midwestern US city, Wu said China Southern aims to start passenger service to Chicago next year. He declined to specify a time frame because the company is still engaged in negotiations with US aviation authorities to gain approval for the plan.
