Aerolíneas Argentinas cerró una ruta clásica a Nueva York
Aerolíneas Argentinas ha cancelado el Jueves 08/08 el destino Nueva York con el último vuelo cerrando la ruta tras once años de operaciones. Con el aterrizaje del último vuelo AR1301 proveniente del Aeropuerto Internacional Nueva York (JFK), la compañía estatal se despidió de la ruta que fue operada por más de once años ininterrumpidos.
El último vuelo aterrizó en el Aeropuerto Internacional Buenos Aires/Ezeiza (EZE) a las 20:32 (hora local) del Jueves 08/08, el vuelo AR1301 de Aerolíneas Argentinas, marcando el final de la ruta hacia Nueva York (JFK), Estados Unidos, tras once años de operaciones interrumpidas solo durante la pandemia. En el último tiempo, los vuelos hacia la “Gran Manzana” eran operados por los aviones de fuselaje ancho Airbus A330-200 matrícula LV-HVT, capaces de llevar más de 250 pasajeros. Se trataba de una de las rutas de mayor demanda de la compañía, siendo uno de los destinos predilectos en los Estados Unidos.
Para la compañía aérea, la pérdida de la ruta hacia Nueva York ha representado un destino tradicional incluso desde los comienzos de la compañía a mediados de la década de 1950. Los vuelos hacia la Gran Manzana comenzaron el 21 de Marzo de 1950, operados por Douglas DC-6. La ruta realizaba varias escalas en Río de Janeiro, Belén, Puerto España y La Habana. Posteriormente, los vuelos aumentaron en 1957 a tres frecuencias semanales. Introduciéndose en la era jet, el 29 de Mayo de 1959, iniciaba los servicios con aeronaves Comet IV la ruta Buenos Aires—Nueva York. El 15 de Diciembre de 1966, la ruta es reemplazada por los Boeing 707, aeronaves de mayor envergadura. Hacia la década de 1980, la compañía utiliza el Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet.
La ruta fue suspendida en Abril de 2008 durante la gestión privada del Grupo Marsans, un periodo en el que Aerolíneas Argentinas abandonó varios destinos internacionales. Tras la re-estatización de la aerolínea en Septiembre 2008, la línea aérea iniciaba nuevamente los servicios hacia la Gran Manzana hacia el 2013, mientras las diferentes gestiones gubernamentales enfrentaban desafíos en las rutas internacionales que han contribuido al déficit operacional de la ruta hacia Estados Unidos. Como parte del fortalecimiento de la ruta, Aerolíneas Argentinas realizó un acuerdo de código compartido con Delta Air Lines, permitiendo a los pasajeros conectar con otros destinos en Estados Unidos. Pero factores como las diferentes terminales que operaban las aerolíneas en el acuerdo, sumado a la falta de aeronaves de fuselaje ancho disponibles han dificultado las operaciones hacia Nueva York.
Según datos de ANAC Argentina, durante el primer semestre 2024 la línea aérea mantenía entre dos a cuatro frecuencias semanales con un factor de ocupación que superaba el 90%. Aunque es notable el alto índice de flujo de pasajeros, una gestión deficitaria ha complicado económicamente diferentes rutas internacionales.
La falta de aeronaves de largo alcance hizo que la aerolínea suprimiese las rutas en 2012 hacia Auckland (AKL) y Ciudad de México, y en Marzo de 2014 a Sydney (SYD), y más recientemente, hacia Barcelona, España.
Conectividad Nueva York
Con la salida de Aerolíneas Argentinas, el mercado entre Buenos Aires y Nueva York será atendido únicamente por compañías estadounidense. El cese de la ruta Buenos Aires/EZE—New York/JFK ha dejado un hueco que serán cubiertos con aerolíneas estadounidenses. American Airlines será la única aerolínea que conecte Buenos Aires y Nueva York con vuelos diarios en Boeing 777-200ER, ofreciendo 3.822 asientos semanales. Delta Air Lines mantiene operaciones estacionales entre Octubre a Marzo en aeronaves Airbus A330-900.
La aeronave resultante de la ruta hacia Nueva York será reasignada a rutas más rentables, como Madrid, Cancún y Punta Cana, que han incrementado recientemente sus frecuencias.

Aerolíneas Argentinas has cancelled the New York destination on Thursday 08/08 with the last flight closing the route after eleven years of operations. With the landing of the last flight AR1301 from New York International Airport (JFK), the state-owned company said goodbye to the route that was operated for more than eleven uninterrupted years.
The last flight landed at Buenos Aires/Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) at 20:32 (local time) on Thursday 08/08, flight AR1301 of Aerolíneas Argentinas, marking the end of the route to New York (JFK), United States, after eleven years of operations interrupted only during the pandemic. In recent times, flights to the “Big Apple” were operated by wide-body Airbus A330-200 aircraft registered LV-HVT, capable of carrying more than 250 passengers. It was one of the company’s most popular routes, being one of its favorite destinations in the United States.
For the airline, the loss of the New York route has represented a traditional destination even since the company’s beginnings in the mid-1950s. Flights to the Big Apple began on March 21, 1950, operated by Douglas DC-6s. The route made several stops in Rio de Janeiro, Bethlehem, Port of Spain, and Havana. Later, flights increased in 1957 to three weekly frequencies. Entering the jet age, on May 29, 1959, services began with Comet IV aircraft on the Buenos Aires-New York route. On December 15, 1966, the route was replaced by the Boeing 707, larger aircraft. By the 1980s, the company used the Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet.
The route was suspended in April 2008 during the private management of the Marsans Group, a period in which Aerolíneas Argentinas abandoned several international destinations. After the re-nationalization of the airline in September 2008, the airline began services to the Big Apple again in 2013, while the different government administrations faced challenges on international routes that have contributed to the operational deficit of the route to the United States. As part of the strengthening of the route, Aerolíneas Argentinas entered into a codeshare agreement with Delta Air Lines, allowing passengers to connect to other destinations in the United States. But factors such as the different terminals operated by the airlines in the agreement, added to the lack of wide-body aircraft available have made operations to New York difficult.
According to data from ANAC Argentina, during the first half of 2024, the airline maintained between two and four weekly frequencies with an occupancy rate exceeding 90%. Although the high passenger flow rate is notable, poor management has made various international routes difficult financially.
The lack of long-range aircraft caused the airline to eliminate routes in 2012 to Auckland (AKL) and Mexico City, and in March 2014 to Sydney (SYD), and more recently, to Barcelona, Spain.
New York nonnectivity
With the departure of Aerolíneas Argentinas, the market between Buenos Aires and New York will be served solely by American companies. The cessation of the Buenos Aires/EZE—New York/JFK route has left a gap that will be filled by American Airlines. American Airlines will be the only airline connecting Buenos Aires and New York with daily flights on Boeing 777-200ERs, offering 3,822 weekly seats. Delta Air Lines maintains seasonal operations between October and March on Airbus A330-900 aircraft.
The aircraft resulting from the New York route will be reassigned to more profitable routes, such as Madrid, Cancun, and Punta Cana, which have recently increased their frequencies.
