AW-Icon AW001

AW-700338Aerolíneas extends repatriation flights

Aerolíneas Argentinas would repatriate Argentines on more spaced flights

CEO Pablo Ceriani of Aerolíneas Argentinas has announced that repatriation flights will continue on more widely scheduled flights because they represent vulnerable groups according to instructions from the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Transport.

The Government of Argentina will issue new regulations for repatriation flights and hinted that the state airline will continue to bring Argentines from Brazil and the United States, although, he clarified, they will be flights more distant from each other to reduce the impact of contagions and better control of passengers arriving in Argentina; unlike the 42 special flights of the last two weeks.

The two Aerolíneas flights on Saturday 28/03 coming from San Pablo (Brazil) constitute the closing of the cycle of 42 special flights that began on March 17, 2020, and were suspended through Decree of Need and Urgency No. 16,104.

Controlled repatriation

From the Presidency it has been hinted that this decree does not mean that there will be no more repatriations until April 14, 2020. «This is being worked on by Migrations with Health and Transport. They are going to tell us what this new stage will be like, where we are going to bring Argentines, following these criteria of the most vulnerable groups, giving priority to those Argentines who have more emergencies to access treatment or to be in their homes doing isolation. I calculate that tomorrow or the day after we will have the resolutions or the regulations that tell what this new stage is going to be like. Work is underway to provide the regulatory framework established by the decree itself, to make repatriations more spaced, allowing a more orderly administration of the flow of passengers. It will be much more restrictive, but is going to carry out this process», said the CEO of Aerolíneas.

Aerolíneas Argentinas has repatriated around 14,000 Argentines from different risk areas, especially from Madrid, Miami, and Brazil. «Now we are going to enter a more specific, punctual flight regime, following some type of risk population criteria», said Pablo Ceriani.

The government’s reason for temporarily closing flights was to avoid overflows at airports and the health system in general. Although the exact number of Argentines abroad is not yet available, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working to comply with the order of repatriation flights.

From the company, they advise going to the Argentine consulate of the country where they are to explain their situation and determine the best solution to carry out the repatriation. Aerolíneas is permanently working with the Foreign Ministry observing the best alternatives to bring them back home. AW-Icon AW002

AW-Icon AW001

Southwest vs rescate federal

AW-Smiley N. PoolAW | 2020 03 27 16:09 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

Southwest vs federal bailout

PNGPIX-COM-Southwest-Airlines-Logo-PNG-TransparentUnions concerned Southwest Airlines may reject bailout and reduce workforce

The Southwest Airlines Hostess Union wants its members to reject a voluntary license package with a partial payment. Southwest offered its flight attendants a voluntary permit with partial payment on Wednesday, 03/25 in a move to cut their workforce and payroll, even as the United States Senate has approved a stimulus package worth US$ 50 billion in aid to the struggling airline industry.

Now, two unions in Dallas-based Southwest said the airline may be preparing to reject any federal stimulus because of the conditions imposed on it, including restrictions on dividends and share buybacks, requirements to maintain the stable employment levels until September 2020 and limits on executive salaries.

AW-Mark J. Terrill-Associated PressSOUTHWEST AIRLINES AIRCRAFT STORED AT VICTORVILLE AIRPORT, CALIFORNIA | MARK J. TERRILL

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin may also require airlines to grant a shareholding in exchange for subsidies. «Some airlines may want to try to weather the storm while firing members to get them off the payroll», said Bret Oestreich, National Director of the Fraternal Association of Aircraft Mechanics, which represents about 2,800 employees in Southwest. Southwest Airlines planes are parked in increasing numbers at the Southern California Logistics Airport in Victorville, California.

Airlines

Federal government aid paves the way for airlines to shrink during the COVID-19 crisis. In the coming weeks, more and more planes will be parked on the airport’s taxiways as airlines shrink to respond to decimated demand and shy passengers. In early April, airlines will likely fly a fraction of the planes they made at this time a month ago, both because passengers are leaving the flights and because the rescue packages that lawmakers will approve allow them to pay workers to feel at home.

Southwest offers flight attendants paid volunteer time off for May and June at 50% of the minimum line value. The deal would also preserve benefits, though flight attendants would still have to complete the paid training requirements.

Fundraiser for John ODonnell by Oriana Korin : TWU of America ...Local 556 Transportation Workers Union, representing Southwest’s 16,000 flight attendants, tells members not to accept the deal, especially since it comes just before Congress’s final approval of the stimulus package that could guarantee them the full payment in the coming months.

«The company created this emergency free time program blindly, quickly and with complete disregard for what is being negotiated and approved by Congress. Southwest Airlines also claims they ‘retain the right to reject government funds and conditions that They come with them», TWU Local 556 said in a letter to members.

Southwest CEO Gary Kelly spent weeks in Washington pressuring lawmakers and federal leaders over the stimulus package, but the airline has been silent on the bill since the weekend when senators reached an agreement. In the version of the bill passed Wednesday night 03/25 in the Senate, the airlines would obtain US$ 25 billion in loans and US$ 25 billion in grants for continued payment of wages, salaries, and employee benefits.

The airline desperately needs some help, Kelly said in messages to employees. «The CARES Act is massive, includes many complexities and nuances, and provides the Departments of the Treasury and Transportation with the authority to interpret and implement the numerous provisions and conditions of the bill. We also understand that the Treasury Department will have several days to describe the procedures for requesting government assistance after the law is passed», said a statement by Southwest Airlines spokesman Chris Mainz.

Southwest may be in better financial shape than many of its competitors, but it has still struggled to keep up with the speed and depth of the sudden drop in air traffic. TSA data shows that passenger traffic in the United States has dropped nearly 90% compared to the previous year. Last week, a Southwest executive said the planes were flying at less than 20% of their capacity.

Several crew members have reported that they are flying planes with as few as three or eight passengers. Southwest has US$ 6.2 billion in cash to help you in the coming months. The salaries and benefits of its employees last year totaled US$ 8.3 billion. AW-Icon AW002

EEUU aprueba ayudas aerolíneas

AW-Dallasnews_7005AW | 2020 03 26 11:24 | GOVERNMENT / AIRLINES

United States Senate approves aid to airlines

US Airlines Benefit From Pandemic-Passed US Senate Bill. The United States Senate approved a US$ 2 trillion economic aid package Wednesday night, March 25, which aims to reduce the economic impact during the Coronavirus pandemic, and part of the package includes funds to American airlines, which have suffered heavy losses.

Passenger airlines would receive US$ 25 billion in aid for payment of workers’ wages and benefits, in addition to up to US$ 25 billion more in guarantees and loans. Contract workers would also receive US$ 3 billion in assistance. Airlines would have to agree not to fire workers until at least the end of September 2020 as part of the negotiations.

Estimates for April 2020 from the national and international air services network will decrease by around 68% due to travel restrictions related to the Coronavirus. The grounding of around 1,800 flights globally has also dramatically reduced cargo capacity, as around 50% of air cargo worldwide travels on passenger aircraft instead of specific cargo flights. The pandemic has devastated the industry, with some airlines temporarily reducing flights by more than 50%.

American Airlines made its first cargo flight last week on a Boeing 777-200 passenger jet that was grounded due to cutbacks. «We have a critical role to play in keeping essential goods moving during this unprecedented time, and we are proud to do our part and find ways to continue serving our customers and our communities», said Rick Elieson, President of Cargo, and American Airlines Vice President of International Operations, in a press release last Thursday.

Alaska Airlines which is reducing flights in the next two months by 70 percent.

United Airlines similarly announced on Wednesday 03/25 that it would cut flights in the United States by 52% overall after saying it would cut international flights by 90%.

Delta Air Lines has started using Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 to import essential supplies from Europe to the United States. «We are here to help keep world trade moving and supply lines open. Transforming our operation to provide cargo-only charter flights allows us to diversify our business at a time when the global need to move critical supplies is important. It is also essential to what we do and who we are, ensuring that we connect to the world, even in difficult times», Shawn Cole, Delta Cargo Vice President, said in a press release.

Airlines in the United States will benefit from government aid to reduce the economic impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, a respite beyond the second half of 2020. AW-Icon AW002

Empleados de Aerolíneas Argentinas advierten explosión contagios masivos

AW-700006766AW | 2020 03 26 10:03 | AIRLINES

AW-Reuters_BAUK graduation aid airlines

The UK rules out a broad financial bailout for airlines

The British government has ruled out immediate direct aid to the aviation sector, arguing that the coronavirus pandemic does not directly affect UK flights. In a letter to airlines and airports, Treasury Chancellor Rishi Sunak said Tuesday, March 24, that companies must first take advantage of all commercial avenues to raise funds, and that any assistance the state provides will be structured to protect the interests of taxpayers. «The government is prepared to start negotiations with individual companies seeking tailored support as a last resort, after having exhausted other options», said Rishi Sunak.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) previously said airlines could take a US$ 252 billion revenue hit this year from the pandemic, warning that a liquidity crisis is just around the corner and urging governments to take massive steps to keep the industry running.

Sunak offered some hope that operators will qualify for assistance through the government’s Corporate Finance Fund, part of a £ 330bn ($ 390bn) national program that is being run by the Bank of England. He said he understood there was confusion about whether the airlines can access the funds, which are for companies with an investment-grade credit rating, and that it is under discussion to resolve the uncertainty.

In considering airline support, the government will consider factors including whether a company makes a significant contribution to the UK, how important it is to connectivity and whether the aid would be fair to other companies. The aviation industry will benefit from measures including wage support and tax-deferred payments, and Sunak said that Secretary of Transportation Grant Shapps is open to discussing some measures for the entire industry.
