The regional airline Air Italy announced on Tuesday 11/02 that it will cease operations

The Italian airline Air Italy, the second largest in the country after Alitalia has announced its liquidation after accumulating losses of 360 million euros in the last two years, according to the company after an extraordinary shareholders meeting held on Tuesday 11 February 2020

«The shareholders of Air Italy, Alisarda and Qatar Airways, through AQA Holding and following the persistent and difficult structural conditions of the market, have unanimously decided to liquidate the company Air Italy», according to the official statement. The company assured that all flights will be guaranteed until February 25, 2020, operated by other airlines at the scheduled times and days. From that date, customers will be relocated or refunded.

In 2017 the airline Qatar Airways and the Italian Alisarda absorbed the Italian airline Meridiana Fly. With more than 50 years of activity, the old Meridiana began a new phase of growth and a year later it was renamed Air Italy. The ambitious initial strategic plan contemplated to increase its fleet in 50 airplanes until 2020 and reach up to ten million passengers in 2022 with the aim of leading the market and becoming the first national airline surpassing Alitalia. However, the serious financial problems that had dragged on since then have made it impossible to meet the challenges. In 2018 Air Italy closed with losses of 164 million euros and in 2019 it pointed to a negative result that exceeded 200 million.

The measure came after the airline, previously called Meridiana, was relaunched two years ago with a 51% stake in Alisarda, a controlling company of Aga Khan based in Sardinia, and 49% by Qatar Airways. Qatar Airways explained in a statement that, since the acquisition of 49% of its stake in Air Italy, «it has firmly believed in the airline and its potential, supporting the business plan proposed by the management that had the objective of increasing growth and creates jobs». The Qatari company also confirmed its willingness to maintain its investment in the airline if it had had the commitment of all shareholders.

The Italian Minister of Transport, Paola De Micheli, requested an urgent meeting with the company on Tuesday, inviting her to suspend any decision on the possible liquidation until the meeting with the corresponding ministries. «The decision to liquidate a company of this size is not acceptable without first informing the Government and without seriously considering any alternative, therefore, I hope that Air Italy will suspend the resolution until the meeting that we can schedule from the next hours», De Micheli told local media. The company employs about 1,500 people, half of them in Olbia, on the island of Sardinia.

Air transport unions have called a 24-hour national strike on February 25, 2020. The unions estimate that the airline employs 1,200 people. The company operated about 30 national, European and transatlantic routes. «For too long, the syndicates have asked without being heard a ministerial work table that has the purpose of rewriting the rules of the sector», lament in a joint note the main unions in the sector announced the strikes. The main objective is to put an end to the causes and effects of industrial and contractual dumping actions that have generated unacceptable competitive asymmetries, they denounce. AW-Icon AW002

South African Airways announces airline restructuring plan

South African Airways (SAA) has announced new initiatives to support the transformation of the airline into a sustainable and profitable business with the Business Rescue Practitioners (BRP). Les Matuson and Siviwe Dongwana, members of the BRP, have worked closely with key stakeholders, including industry specialists, the Government of South Africa, creditors and Executive Management, to develop a comprehensive restructuring program that will culminate in a Commercial Rescue Plan that will be published at the end of February 2020 and will be presented subsequently to the creditors for approval.

In line with SAA’s commitment to take urgent measures to save cash and create a viable platform for a successful future, the key measures must now be implemented. These measures include specific changes in the route network, deployment of more fuel-efficient aircraft, optimization of organizational structures and renegotiation of key contracts with suppliers. “The initiatives we are taking now will strengthen SAA’s business. We believe this should give our loyal customers peace of mind that SAA is moving in the right direction. We are focused on our mandate to restore the commercial health of SAA and create an airline that South Africans are proud of”, said the BRPs.

SAA network services changes

In a careful analysis of SAA’s liquidity challenges and after consultations with all relevant stakeholders, the BRPs have identified which routes will be retained to boost the profitability of the restructured national airline. SAA will continue to operate all international services between Johannesburg and Frankfurt, London Heathrow, New York, Perth, and Washington through Accra. Regional services to retain include from Johannesburg to Blantyre, Dar es Salaam, Harare, Kinshasa, Lagos, Lilongwe, Lusaka, Maputo, Mauritius, Nairobi, Victoria Falls, and Windhoek.

On February 29, 2020, SAA will close the following regional and international services from Johannesburg to Abidjan through Accra, Entebbe, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Livingston, Luanda, Munich, Ndola, and Sao Paulo.

In the domestic route network, SAA will continue to serve Cape Town in a reduced way. All other national destinations, including Durban, East London, and Port Elizabeth, will cease to be operated by SAA on February 29, 2020. National routes operated by Mango will not be affected by the changes. All customers booked on any canceled international and regional route will receive a full refund. Customers booked on canceled domestic flights will be relocated to the services operated by Mango.

SAA does not intend to make further significant changes to the network. The flight schedule for February remains unchanged. Therefore, passengers and travel agencies can rely on booking future trips with South African Airways.

SAA assets

To improve the liquidity of the airline, rationalization programs for SAA subsidiaries are being considered, as well as the sale of selected assets. The BRPs will continue to explore viable investment opportunities with potential investors regarding SAA.

SAA jobs

The joint BRPs have stated that every effort is being made to limit the impact of job losses at SAA and its subsidiaries. “Our intention is to restructure the business so that we can retain as many jobs as possible. This will help provide a platform for a viable and sustainable future. However, unfortunately, a reduction in the number of employees will be necessary», said Matuson and Dongwana.

The BRPs will hire labor, both organized and unorganized, to reach a necessary solution for a sustainable airline to advance. The BRPs wish to underline their support for the President’s proclamation so that the Special Investigation Unit examines some of the airline’s contracts. This measure will help evaluate viable agreements and reduce the cost basis of SAA. The decisions and actions announced today are aimed at improving the balance of SAA, creating a platform for a strong and sustainable airline and ensuring that the company is more attractive to potential strategic capital partners.

AW-Jetsmart-norwegian fusionAW | 2020 02 10 12:20 | AIRLINES / AVIATION ORGANISMS

AW-Icon AW001

JetSMART-16-9The JetSmart-Norwegian Air Argentina merger continues to be delayed by union conflictimages (2)

The JetSmart Airlines Argentina–Norwegian Air Argentina merger continues to stagnate following the conflict between unions of both airlines and the company JetSmart Argentina in differentiating the new working conditions of Norwegian Argentina employees. Two months after the purchase of the Argentine subsidiary of Norwegian by JetSmart Airlines Argentina was announced, the conflict over labor agreements still continues.

Employees who worked in the administrative area, JetSmart offer them a withdrawal, compensation or, in some cases, go to the Chilean subsidiary since these are positions that are duplicated. The most conflictive negotiation is in the area of Cabin Crews, Pilots and Co-Pilots since the new working conditions would be unfavorable in relation to the contract with the Norwegian airline. In the case of administrative employees, there are 190 who negotiate their work continuity. The UNEN Union, which brings together Norwegian Air Argentina airline employees, claims compensation similar to compensation since they claim that JetSmart Airlines Argentina plans to reduce wages and benefits to match conditions with those of its employees.

The merger between the two low-cost companies continues in their processes related to the operation of both El Palomar Airport and Jorge Newbery Airport, where JetSmart Airlines Argentina wishes to keep the three frequencies that Norwegian Air Argentina will use until the end of March 2020. As for the fleet expansion process to meet Norwegian’s demand, it will incorporate more Airbus A320CEO aircraft. AW-Icon AW002

AFACWA mejores condiciones laborales

AFA-CWA union better working conditions

The leader of the flight attendants says that the employees are at the breaking point

The President of the largest union of flight attendants of the US-based Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) says that too many airline workers, especially smaller regional airlines, are struggling to survive even when the airlines report multi-million dollar profits.

The airline industry is among the most heavily unionized in the United States economy and union members seek greater share of the multi-million dollar profits of the airlines.

Sara Nelson, President of the Association of Flight Assistants, says that many employees, especially on smaller regional airlines, struggle to survive. She says there could be wild strikes despite a federal law that makes it almost impossible for airline unions to conduct legal strikes.

US airlines have been very profitable for approximately the last ten years. Workers want better working conditions in contractual negotiations. The airline employees took incredible cuts during bankruptcies from 2001 to 2013 from around 30% to 40% reduction in payment, loss of pensions, a change in costs and burden for medical care, and it has not recovered all that. Our staffing has been reduced to a minimum, so we are working harder than ever when we are at work, with overtime to make the same amount of payment. Airlines are benefiting with billions of dollars, and we expect our fair share.

Labor investment has not recovered to what it should be now that airlines are making substantial profits again. What has increased is the amount of share repurchases that airlines have announced. If you even took half of that and invested in labor costs, it would make a big difference for hundreds of thousands of employees. Although many of its members own shares of the company, some obtain shared profits. How much responsibility is involved to help airlines thrive? Every airline employee wants airlines to perform well and make a profit. They inherently understand that their salary depends on that. When the main decision-maker for the business is focused on Wall Street and they talk about short-term profits, decisions can be made for airlines that are not good for their long-term success. The employees are more interested in the success of the airline than in the boardroom, shareholders or investors. In many cases, employees are the best management advocates who try to rebuild an airline network and plan their long-term success.

Contractual negotiations seem to take longer and often end in federal mediation. The airline management has come to believe that they can delay negotiations and postpone the increase in labor costs by doing so. The Union has a real concern about how comfortable passengers feel because it relates directly to their experience, their mood and the amount of time we need to spend to resolve the conflict and resolve these concerns and it is more difficult to do all that because we have between 25% and 50% less personnel on domestic flights and we are also seeing cuts in personnel on international flights. Andes suspende sus vuelos

AW-Sebastian_ArndtAW | 2020 02 08 11:39 | AIRLINES

AW-FernandoAriel TorreAndes suspends its flights

Andes Líneas Aéreas has suspended its flights until February 14, 2020

Andes Líneas Aéreas has suspended aero-commercial operations from Friday 07/02 until Thursday 14/02 due to operational issues, company sources said. Andes also informed in a statement that the points of sale will be closed due to the cessation of operations during that period and clarified that «those affected passengers will be contacted by company personnel for their relocation or return of the amount paid». Passengers will be referred to Aerolíneas Argentinas.

The Minister of Transportation of the Nation, Mario Meoni, said in this regard that «Andes is a company with years of financial and economic imbalance, and from the Ministry we are trying to provide solutions, but not subsidize it. It has a serious financial problem, more than Operational, it is an internal matter of the company. We are trying to direct passengers to Aerolineas Argentinas. The important thing is that people do not hang up and have the return of the ticket. We are working with Aerolineas Argentinas for that», said the minister.

Andes, financial problems

This is the second temporary suspension of operations of Andes Líneas Aéreas since in November 2019 it had interrupted its service pending the cancellation of a debt that the Province of Chubut maintained with the airline. The airline is currently going through a situation derived from the delay in the payment of salaries that covers all personnel, but in the case of cabin crew, it caused retention of tasks that could have caused flight cancellations. «We take this measure while the conflict is resolved, so as not to harm the passengers that is our reason for being», said a company source.

Andes Airlines operates frequencies from Salta to Buenos Aires, Puerto Madryn, Comodoro Rivadavia, Salta, Jujuy, Iguazú; In March 2018, it had a fleet of nine aircraft and until January 2020 with a workforce of 500 employees. The economic crisis in Argentina and the competitiveness of the air market has led since August 2018 to cancel airplane orders, return of others. The company had to stop flying to Tucumán, Córdoba, Mendoza and assess whether it will maintain the Bariloche destination. It currently has a fleet of five Boeing MD-83, of which two are operational with license plates LV-WGN, LV-WGM.

Aggressive market

The General Manager of Andes Líneas Aéreas, Horacio Preneste, explained that in the previous management «the entry of several companies was facilitated, the market was oversupplied, all prices were down, the minimum rate was taken, but there are no mechanisms In order to control dumping and the dollar jump caused us tremendous damage. We have been in the market for more than 14 years, we are purely Argentine capitals and there has been no consideration for all the effort made. In other countries, before to make a similar opening, it is tried to consolidate the companies that are functioning; here a battlefield was generated in which all are killed». AW-Icon AW002

Conflicto gremial JetSmart-Norwegian

AW-7001328AW | 2020 02 07 17:47 | AIRLINES

Modelo low cost, continua

The commitment of the airline JetSmart Airlines Argentina when, at the end of 2019, the absorption of the 159 assigned air routes, eight of operational cabotage, and the approximately 180 employees of its structure were accorded of Norwegian Air Argentina. The process would take several months, but the process of merging the two airlines is now hindered by a union conflict.

JetSmart has announced that it will seek to keep the employment of the workers of the Norwegian airline, intends to reframe them in an agreement different from the one they still have. This proposal is rejected by the Norwegian Union of Employees Union (UNEN), which declared itself in a state of alertness and mobilization and warned of possible effects on the service.

According to a statement from UNEN, the Union created in the last year of the administration of Mauricio Macri, the company informed them «the need to implement a system of novation of contracts for Norwegian Argentina employees, as well as the possibility of an agreed dismissal or voluntary withdrawal for those who do not wish to continue under the contractual conditions of JetSmart».

Gonzalo Pérez Corral, General Manager of JetSmart in Argentina, has reported that «until now the workers maintain the conditions before being absorbed by JetSmart and are managed independently. We are negotiating with the union so that people can gradually join JetSmart, as the operation demands it both here and in other countries. Obviously, the conditions we think are those of JetSmart, which has a more sustainable model, «he said.

Pérez Corral preferred to maintain the confidentiality of the agreement they propose, he said that it is a compensation model different from that of Norwegian Air Argentina, but that as far as wages are concerned there is no substantial gap, which allows inferring that the most marked differences They are associated with the benefits. The UNEN union has a few months to live, that agreement was mostly agreed individually between the company and the employee. Among its positive aspects, he said he has a semi-annual automatic salary update clause.

Regarding the possibility of opening a voluntary retirement, he said it would be very premature. «These are things we are talking with the union, even without definition. If it were to be done, it would be more to listen to the negotiating table and show willingness, understanding that there may be people who do not like working in our company», said.

JetSmart-Norwegian fusion plan

Confirmation that JetSmart Airlines Argentina would absorb the local operation of Norwegian Air Argentina was completed on December 4, 2019. At that time, CEO Estuardo Ortiz of JetSmart Argentina, of Guatemalan origin, has indicated that both airlines would continue in the merger processes normally until the integration model will be defined. In fact, Norwegian is planning to sell tickets on its own platform dated March 28, 2020, and only then sell its sales to the JetSmart website.

Norwegian Air Argentina will begin the deprogramming of its aircraft. The three Boeing 737 aircraft are currently flying in the country without their corporate titles. The Argentine JetSamrt company will incorporate more Airbus A320CEO.

Low-cost model, continuous

The entry of the new national Government, which raised doubts about whether it would continue to support the low-cost model promoted by the Government of Mauricio Macri; the CEO of JetSmart Airlines Argentina, Pérez Corral, assured that they had meetings with the Ministers of Transportation and Tourism, Mario Meoni and Matías Lammens, respectively, and that «they welcome what has happened during the previous government and seek continuity of this model».

Andes Líneas Aéreas suspends flights to Patagonia

The airline Andes Líneas Aéreas is experiencing operational difficulties throughout Argentina. Andes is having problems not only with flights coming to Chubut but also in Mendoza, Salta, Río Negro, among other provinces.

The Minister of Tourism and Protected Areas of Chubut, Néstor Garcia, gave a press conference where he explained the situation of the company Andes Airlines, which affects the province in the suspension of flights in both Puerto Madryn and Comodoro Rivadavia until next February 14, 2020. In turn, the Minister of Tourism stressed that “it is a problem that Andes Líneas Aéreas has nationwide and hopefully these can be solved because the truth is an important company for us, not only as a province but to Patagonia level, because, in addition to the flights arriving in Puerto Madryn and Comodoro Rivadavia, Bariloche, Calafate, and Ushuaia are also affected, which are connections that we have from our territory.

Andes, indefinitions

The Minister of Tourism of Chubut has expressed about the airline’s indefinitions: “I have already spoken with people of the company, and they themselves have undefined about their situation in the future, but I have also contacted the Tourism Ministers of the Rio Negro and Santa Cruz to see how we position ourselves together to solve this problem”, said the Minister. The Province of Chubut currently has a debt owed to Andes Líneas Aéreas. Néstor Garcia explained that «the provincial government has recognized debt with the Andes Líneas Aéreas company, but we were complying and we are committed to paying them, but the problem they are currently facing has to do with a business and union issue nationwide».

Aerial policy

In addition, the provincial official took the opportunity to refer to the air trade policy that will be applied in the country, with the new management headed by President Alberto Fernández. «They are the ones who are going to dictate the guidelines to be followed in terms of flights, and they will be the ones who will decide what role the low cost will play in the future», he said. “With regard to Aerolíneas Argentina we are in permanent dialogue with them, this week they have decided to considerably lower the fares of the flights, which is a very important fact, and they are making adjustments to remove flights in low season and increase flights in high season, which marks that we are in tune”, said the Minister of Tourism of Chubut.
