Israel-Gaza airspace compromised

War conflict shakes population of Israel-Gaza-West Bank

Airlines suspend all their flights to Israel. They seek to guarantee the safety of clients and employees in the face of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As the Israeli-Palestinian conflict grows, several airlines suspended services to Israel on Thursday 05/13 amid diplomatic efforts made to stop the spiral of violence.

Israel’s national airline, El Al Airlines, said on Wednesday 03/12 that it was continuing flights as scheduled, but would allow travelers to change tickets booked on flights before May 19, 2021, or freeze their tickets, without pay a fee. He also said it would allow passengers to have free use of the WhatsApp messaging service on flights that have Wi-Fi so they can stay in touch with their families.

The Spanish Iberia Lineas Aereas has announced that it canceled its Madrid-Tel Aviv flights this Thursday 05/13 as well as the rest of the flights scheduled for the weekend. An Iberia spokesperson said that “we have not gone any further, we will make decisions based on the evolution of events.” The US airline Delta Air Lines suspended the service between New York-Tel Aviv to guarantee the safety of its customers and American Airlines indicated that they have canceled all New Yor-Tel Aviv flights until May 15. United Airlines, which operates eighteen weekly offers to Israel from different cities in the United States, has reported the suspension of its flights to Tel Aviv. The Russian airline Aeroflot Russian Airlines announced the cancellation of its Moscow-Tel Aviv flight on May 14, 2021, without specifying whether it will cancel the same flight the following days. The Dutch KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways have also reported cancellations of frequencies to the Middle East Lufthansa German Airlines canceled flights for Thursday 13/05 and Friday 14/05 The Polish airline LOT Polish Airlines indicated or for its part that suspends flights to Israel until further notice.

Arab-Israeli conflict

The State of Israel faced escalating conflict on Friday 05/14, when deadly violence erupted in the West Bank amid massive aerial bombardment in Gaza and unprecedented Arab-Jewish riots within Israel. The clashes in the West Bank, described as one of the most intense since the second intifada that began in 2000, left eleven people dead in Israeli fire, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said, as total deaths from attacks in Gaza rose to 126.

Hamas Islamists and other Palestinian armed groups in the enclave have fired more than 2,000 rockets at Israel since Monday 04/10, killing nine people, with airstrike sirens raging across the country throughout the week. The Israeli army said its nightly assault on Gaza involved fighter jets and tanks hitting a Hamas network of tunnels dug under civilian areas. Towers and houses were leveled, while rockets tore through the skies towards Israel. The fighting in blockaded Gaza, the worst since a 2014 war, erupted after hostilities in East Jerusalem, the part of the city annexed by Israel that the Palestinians claim as their capital.

Iron Dome of Israel

Since Monday 05/10, Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other armed groups have fired more than 1,800 rockets at Israel, mainly towards southern cities, but also Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Hundreds of people have been intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome defense system. Deployed in 2011 with strong financial and technical support from the United States, the Iron Dome is an all-weather air defense system that identifies, intercepts, and destroys short-range rockets and artillery shells from a range of four to 70 kilometers.

The system was first conceptualized in the 1990s during the Israeli conflict with the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah and Israeli officials claim that the system has a success rate of more than 90%. Although it has protected Israel from rocket attacks, it is only effective up to a point. The Dome is also limited in the weapons it is capable of intercepting, and it cannot destroy more sophisticated ballistic missile attacks. The Israeli government has also come under fire for how it prioritizes funding for the Iron Dome, and critics say it neglects other defenses.

Air traffic

In an attempt to minimize civil air travel exposure to rocket fire from the Gaza Strip, Israeli air officials said on Thursday 05/13 that incoming passenger flights would be diverted from Tel Aviv/Ben Gurion International Airport to the Eilat / Ramon International Airport on the outskirts of Eilat in the south of the country. Palestinian terrorists have fired waves of rockets at targets in Israel in recent days, with some of the projectiles striking the central region of the country, where Ben Gurion Airport is located, but have been unharmed.

Under the new flight diversion plan, passengers will disembark at Eilat / Ramón Airport, which has been opened in 2019. Empty planes will fly to Ben Gurion to board new passengers to depart from there to international destinations. Although the Israeli government’s decision is to widen the air corridor taken by passenger flights in and out of the country and minimize the number of planes full of passengers on the ground anywhere in order to reduce the chances of shots fired from rockets from Gaza hit a plane, given the escalation of the war, the authorities are analyzing closing Israel’s airspace due to the high rate of insecurity that develops. Cargo planes and private jets were still continuing to land at Tel Aviv/Ben Gurion International Airport, a spokesman for the Israel Airports Authority said.

The development of flight diversion came as US airlines began canceling flights to Israel due to rocket attacks. Meanwhile, the war incursions continue to continue throughout the weekend, making the situation in the Middle East more unstable, which does not promise a return of aviation for next week.

SAA restablecerá ops en 3Q2021

AW | 2021 05 15 00:15 | AIRLINES

South African Airways objetivo reanudación vuelos en Julio-Agosto

South_African_Airways_Isologotype

SAA will reset ops in 3Q2021

South African Airways target to resume flights in July-August

AW-A350-South-African

South African Airways (SAA) has communicated that it aims to resume flights in July or August 2021, but the restart date will depend on how the COVID-19 pandemic progresses and if the airline can resolve a pilot dispute, said its Director. Executive this Friday 05/14.

The state airline SAA, which entered administration in December 2019, has not flown commercially since September, when its administrators paralyzed all operations pending financing for a restructuring. The airline left administration at the end of April 2021 after receiving R 7.8 billion Rand/US$ 550 million from the government, but did not say at the time when it would take to the skies again. «As a draft or as a proposal we are examining July-August 2021. However, these dates come with some complexities, the issue of COVID-19 is something that we still have to consider and there is a complex issue that we are dealing with with the pilots as well», SAA Executive Director Thomas Kgokolo said during a presentation to the Parliamentary Commission.

South African Airways has been trying to come to terms with the pilots for months. The airline met with its pilots this Friday 05/14 to try to find a solution to a disagreement over pending wages and terms of dismissal. SAA is one of the few South African state-owned companies to rely on government bailouts, putting the country’s budget under pressure at a time of rapidly increasing debt.

,,As ‘n konsep of as ‘n voorstel ondersoek ons Julie-Augustus 2021.

Avelo inaugura Burbank-Redmond

Avelo Airlines establece novena ruta hacia Redmond

Avelo_Airlines_Isologotype

Avelo Airlines has inaugurated its ninth commercial route this Thursday, 05/13 at 4:00 p.m. by joining Burbank-Redmond, as part of the expansions of the Californian startup. With a traditional water jet greeting, the first flight of the low-fare airline lands in the new destination Redmond, State of Oregon, debuting with a service with three weekly frequencies (3Frq/S).

Redmond is a city in Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. The city is located on the eastern side of the Oregon Cascade Range, in the High Desert in central Oregon. Redmond is a full service township and one of the fastest growing residential and industrial communities in Oregon. Redmond had a population of 32,421 in 2019, and the population continues to grow at a rate of about 6.7% each year. Redmond owns the region’s only commercial airline service airport, Redmond Municipal Airport/Roberts Field RDM/KRDM. Airlines include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines with service operated by their respective regional airline affiliates through codeshare agreements. These carriers offer nonstop service to Portland, Seattle, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix. The low cost company Avelo Airlines has joined the list as a new air operator at Roberts Field Airport.

Avelo Airlines has been established by a longtime airline executive who thinks there is room for another low-fare airline in addition to the several low-budget airlines already on the market. «There are very few seats in the United States offered by low-cost carriers. So we believe the opportunity is enormous. Customers want a very inexpensive way to get from point A to point B,» said President and CEO Andrew Levy.

Breeze Airways receives AOC certificate

FAA awards certificate to Breeze Airways

Breeze Airways, the new emerging American regional airline from aviation entrepreneur David Neeleman has received its long-awaited airline certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that will allow it to begin passenger revenue operations.

Breeze_E195

The startup Breeze Airways has started its process to fly as an airline and has announced the company’s first route between Tampa to Charleston. It has also established that it will reach a service network of 49 non-stop destinations that will cover fifteen cities. In addition, they will connect cities such as Nashville, New Orleans and Pittsburgh. As for the different flight classes, it will include Nice, Nicer and Nicest seats, allowing access to primary rather than secondary airports, in a move that will distance itself from the low cost Allegiant Air. Breeze will operate Embraer E190-100s, which are not especially low-cost in terms of fuel consumption, but which will be offset by lower acquisition cost. They will probably fit nicely into the airline’s hybrid position without having too many seats to fill with unnecessarily high discounts. Part of its fleet in the future will be part of the Airbus A220-300.

Breeze Airways has a fleet of Embraer E190-100 (3) with options for an additional 13 units. All E190 aircraft are under lease from Nordic Aviation Capital. It also has Embraer E195 (2) with options for 28 more aircraft. The new additions of the Airbus A220-300 line will be delivered from October 2021.

The startup Breeze Airways is the second airline to open in more than fifteen years in the United States. The first company Avelo Airlines, has established its operations at the end of April 2021 promising to achieve a very important development on the West coast. David Neeleman’s new airline will start operations shortly with a classic but differentiated company modality to link point-to-point destinations with regional aircraft.

MSI Chicago renueva con Boeing 727

AW | 2021 05 14 21:42 | AVIATION HISTORY

Museo Chicago incorpora a un Boeing 727 de United Airlines

AW-MSI_Chicago_Isologotype

MSI Chicago renews with Boeing 727

The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) has added a new member to its family of museum pieces. The arrival of the Boeing 727-100 aircraft, registration N7017U was the 17th 727 built by The Boeing Company in the early 1990s that was big news at that time in history. The refurbishment of the new museum piece landed at Meigs Field, now Northerly Island, in 1992 on a runway certainly not intended for airliners. He was taken by barge to Indiana, where he prepared for the exhibition, then by barge again and across Lake Shore Drive to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry as the crowd watched the new MSI member.

The «Take Flight» exhibit on the balcony level in the Hyde Park museum featured the elegant vintage-style aerial machine, the three-engine Boeing 727-100 that first saw service with United Airlines in 1964. The aircraft has been placed on a glass floor. There is a legendary black box and sections showing the interior of the 727 aircraft. The static display on the main floor of the room is fascinating, showing an undercarriage developing retraction every half hour. Two screens in front of the plane on the balcony replicate what air traffic controllers see in each movie about the aircraft.

Former United Airlines Pilot Captain Ken Voelker was on hand in full uniform, mingling with visitors and handing out pilot wing pins to the younger ones. He retired in 2014 and helps organize the team of pilots who occasionally volunteer as tour guides. He said that according to his log books, he had flown this same 727 when it was in service at least half a dozen times. It was a great plane in its day, he said. The front third of the aircraft, including a few rows of seats and the cabin, has been restored to its appearance when it first entered service. «The 727 was very sensitive. All the controls were physically linked to the fins and to another part of the aircraft by cable and hydraulics. It was big, but it was like flying a sports car, it was a lot of fun to fly it», said the former Captain. Currently, fly-by-wire systems mean that all those connections are by electronic signals and computers.

United Airlines has donated this aircraft to the museum to learn more about the history of the fascinating commercial aircraft of its time. In its fleet it used to have more than one hundred Boeing 727s in service, adapting for all types of airports and short routes and it was the most common aircraft of its time. It was also just the right size for the museum: «Big enough to make an impact, but not a 747», said MSI creative leader John Llewellyn.

The aircraft hangs in the MSI Chicago Transportation Gallery mounted on three steel girders that are built into both the balcony and the plane. According to John Llewellyn, the weight of the plane is actually less than the weight of the balcony parts that had to be cut to fit. The MSI exhibition had closed in October 2020 for the renovation project. The fuselage of the Boeing 727-100 is inscribed with the name of Captain William Norwood, the first colored pilot for United Airlines service, and a video interview tells the story of him.

Rolls-Royce confirma estudio nuevo avión de Boeing

Boeing_Isologo.svg

Rolls-Royce discusses upcoming Boeing plane

Rolls-Royce confirms new Boeing plane study

Rolls-Royce-symbol-2048x2048

The British motor company Rolls-Royce has reported that it is in talks with The Boeing Company about a new commercial aircraft program, lending more weight to rumors that the American aircraft manufacturer is stepping up work on a new model that would cover a empty in his line. «It is fairly well documented that Boeing is exploring the opportunity for a new aircraft. Like the other engine manufacturers, I am sure we are in dialogue with Boeing on this», said Rolls Royce Chief Executive Officer Warren East at their annual meeting on Thursday 13/05. The latest discussions are different from those in early 2019, when Rolls-Royce withdrew from the race to supply the mid-range aircraft model then planned by Boeing, the CEO of Rolls Royce said. At the time, the British company decided that its UltraFan engine would not be ready in time for the mid-decade schedule that Boeing had planned for its so-called New Midmarket Airplane (NMA). Boeing CEO David Calhoun scrapped the project shortly after.

The British engine maker is the first major supplier to confirm that it is involved in talks for a mid-market aircraft concept between the single-aisle Boeing 737 MAX and a lower-range Boeing 787 Dreamliner to complement the Boeing 757 output. 20% of aerospace suppliers are discussing participating in the program with Boeing and are hopeful that the new aircraft will be launched soon, Canaccord Genuity Group Inc. Analyst Ken Herbert said in a recent survey.

ULTRA-FAN OF ROLLS-ROYCE ENGINE

American aerospace giant The Boeing Company has been considering designs to replace its double-aisle Boeing 767 and out-of-production Boeing 757 for nearly a decade, while its main rival Airbus Group racked up orders with its A321NEO and its upcoming best-seller the A321XLR, both aircraft that are virtually unmatched in the mid-range market. The European aircraft manufacturer based in Toulouse, France, said this week that the A321NEO/LR variant now accounts for more than half of its order backlog in the A320 family, showing the great momentum that this type of aircraft has in the mid-market. With Airbus building a powerful narrow-body aircraft, «we believe that sooner rather than later Boeing will be executed to address its product portfolio and strategy. The effort appears to be building on the work done as part of the NMA studies and initially appears to be a replacement 757», said Ken Herbert in a research note.

The Chicago-based company has said it continues to invest in initiatives critical to its future, even as it cut its overall research and development budget as the Coronavirus pandemic hit and the grounding of its 737 MAX hit its finances. Boeing plans to rely on the incremental cost and performance advantages derived from the way its next new aircraft is designed and manufactured. It does not intend to expect the kind of propulsion advancement that would provide 15% to 20% efficiency gains over current technology, as has been its pattern in recent decades, David Calhoun said. The company’s deep experience in carbon composite structures and engineering modeling has significantly shortened the time to build for military aircraft such as the T-7A trainer. «In my opinion, those are going to be the advantages of that next aircraft to be developed. And I love where Boeing stands on that front when the time comes», says the Boeing CEO.

Ayudas estatales a aerolíneas

AW | 2021 05 14 16:17 | AIRLINES MARKET / GOVERNMENT

States aids to airlines

European debate on post-pandemic aid in aviation

The pandemic has led to the greatest crisis in the history of commercial aviation, causing airlines to suffer enormous economic losses with consequences not yet contemplated on the near horizon. State aid injected to national flag carriers has generated different fronts of claims: low cost airlines, environmentalists, governments and organizations. However, government support for the aviation sector is a serious bone of contention today, from multiple perspectives. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to unprecedented upheaval in the industry and airlines have lost economic margins of revenue. The crisis has led to a dramatic turnaround after years of privatization, with governments pumping ever-increasing amounts of state aid to national carriers.

The trend has been especially strong in Europe. Italy nationalized Alitalia at the beginning of the crisis, while last month the French government increased its stake in Air France-KLM to 30%. In Germany, the government spent € 9 billion/ US$ 10.9 billion on a 20% stake in Lufthansa German Airlines, while the Swedish and Portuguese governments have also taken stakes in SAS Airlines and TAP Air Portugal, respectively. Not only have flag carriers had to tap into new resources, even Ryanair, the leading critic of European bailouts, accepted special pandemic funding in the form of a US$ 730 million loan from the UK government.

However, while dozens of airlines across the European continent have tapped into liquidity through a series of government offerings, there is a clear dividing line. According to the European airline rescue tracker run by Greenpeace and the environmental groups Transport & Environment and Carbon Market Watch, European governments have already given around € 30 billion in financial aid. Of that amount, about half applies to just two airlines: Lufthansa and Air France-KLM, while other national carriers accounted for the vast majority of the remaining scattered funds.

The European Commission (EC) gave the green light to the financing, but attached conditions, such as forcing airlines to give up precious airport slots. But Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary is furious and has typically been blunt in what he sees as unfair state aid. He says airlines like Air France will never pay him back the billions the French government has given him and that the deals are unfair to airline groups like the Irish budget carrier. «We, easyJet, IAG and the others have to compete with these state aid cocaine addicts», said Michael O’Leary. Ryanair started a legal battle against state aid in various European courts. The common thread of the argument is that the type of support received from Lufthansa and Air France-KLM Group is discriminatory. Although it has lost all the cases so far heard, the airline remains confident in its future chances of its claims.

Question of emissions

What the bailout situation means for the future of aviation in Europe is a matter of serious debate. Some analysts believe that airlines that survive the pandemic without state aid will ultimately be more efficient and competitive in the long run. Others have an opposite view. «For many airlines, the absence of government support could ultimately spell disaster, especially for large airlines», said Shukor Yusof, founder of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics.

There is another side to the whole question and that refers to the environment and the need for the governments of the European Union (EU) to reduce carbon emissions, with aviation being an obvious and heavy contributor. Greenpeace launched its tracker to highlight the extent to which governments have rescued airlines without strict environmental conditions. «Injecting taxpayer money into this highly polluting industry with no environmental strings attached makes no sense. Going back to normal is not really an option», said Greenpeace Transportation Policy Advisor Lorelei Limousin. She says Greenpeace is not opposed to public support for airlines, but billions of public money should be directed to supporting workers and the fight to reduce emissions, rather than simply putting pre-pandemic volumes of planes in the air.

Airlines argue that the huge daily cash burn caused by having planes on the ground makes such an approach impossible in a pandemic. This points to the many valid but competing claims at the center of the debate about the post-pandemic future of aviation, whether it is airlines struggling to thrive or simply survive, environmentalists seeking to reduce emissions, or pilots and cabin crew seeking to return to work in the clouds again.
