The Head of Government of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, has mentioned measures that he would adopt in the event of becoming President from next year 2023. Although he avoids talking about his candidacy for 2023, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta told this Monday 05/23 what measures he would take if he became president next year.

In an interview with Radio Miter, he indicated that he would apply a labor and pension reform and would modify the operation of YPF and Aerolíneas Argentinas. Rodríguez Larreta referred to how he would focus the course of Aerolíneas Argentinas and YPF, two companies with state participation. «With Aerolíneas we have to fly more, hopefully many companies will come to fly to Argentina, hopefully this connection between provinces can return», said Rodríguez Larreta, who highlighted the plan that was applied in the area until 2019, during the administration of his co-party and former President Mauricio Macri, with a boost to low-cost companies.

In the meantime, he affirmed that YPF should function as a private company and clarified: «It can be state capital, obviously. But it has to function as a private company, it is the only way that investments are obtained and YPF requires a huge investment because it has a leading role in energy policy, it must be as efficient as possible».

Cuestionan acuerdos exclusividad de rutas aéreas
Revisión licencia AOC de Agencia Transporte Canadá

Flair_Airlines_Isologotype_New_Logo_2019

Claim Flair exclusivity

Air route exclusivity agreements questioned
Canada Transport Agency AOC license review

Flair Airlines, an ultra low cost airline from Canada, is currently the subject of an AOC license review by the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), which found in a preliminary review published in March 2022 that it may not meet the standards of Canadian owned to fly in the country. A formal decision will be delivered on June 1, 2022, says the Canadian watchdog.

AW-Flair_7378897

Flair Airlines currently has low-fare agreements with regional airports that are improving competition in the Canadian airline industry, but as the Edmonton-based, Alberta (AB) airline seeks additional time to comply with its license to continue flying, a rival airline is challenging the company’s exclusive deals. Flair has exclusivity at the Waterloo/YKF International Airport on some routes, while users wonder or question the benefits or harm of such exclusivities on their air routes.

CTA-AOC Flair

Flair Airlines has come under scrutiny from the Canadian aviation agency over current share ownership requirements under Canadian law, highlighting CTA concerns that the Air Operation Certificate (AOC) may be invalidated while the The budget airline has requested an eighteen-month extension request to meet standards and refinance debt linked to a US investor to Transport Canada, headed by Omar Alghabra.

Flair defends his role in adding lower-cost, competitive fares to the Canadian airline industry as a primary reason he should be allowed to continue flying while he addresses the CTA’s issues. The CEO of Edmonton-based Flair Airlines claims safe leave as the airline reviews the board and refinances debt. But low-cost rival Swoop, owned by WestJet, has criticized Flair’s deals at Waterloo Airport/YKF that take it off routes to the southwestern Ontario city.

Airlines conflict

The airline said in a statement to the airport authority in April 2022 to add service connecting Waterloo with Edmonton and Halifax starting this summer, but has been denied. «Unfortunately, our proposal was denied as Flair Airlines has a monopoly through an exclusivity agreement with the Kitchener-Waterloo Region and the airport authority. These types of agreements are not common in Canada because they prevent choice and competition for It is never in the public interest to allow monopolies to develop and we are disappointed that travelers do not have the option to choose Swoop when planning their next trip to or from the Kitchener-Waterloo region», said Swoop President, Bob Cummings, in a statement.

Flair CEO Stephen Jones confirmed in a statement that the airline has exclusive rights to certain routes out of Waterloo and defended the deal as allowing it the freedom to build service at the airport without the threat of other airlines displacing Flair. «Here’s the truth: Every airline in Canada was offered a fantastic opportunity to fly out of Waterloo on an exclusive basis, through a transparent RFP (Request for Proposals) process. Not a single one of our competitors bothered to respond. That’s how much they care about Waterloo. We do. Flair was the only one willing to take the risk and start flying, and has developed a successful network and great relationship with YKF», Stephen Jones said in his statement.

While Swoop’s criticism of the competition looms large on Flair, Waterloo Airport is the one behind the exclusivity deal, a show he launched roughly five years ago. Waterloo Airport Director Chris Wood confirmed that Swoop’s request to add service to those routes was denied because they are locked into exclusivity deals with Flair. Chris Wood also confirmed that the airport has exclusivity agreements with other airlines, although he did not provide specific names. Chris Wood says that when Waterloo introduced the program, it opened the door for all airlines in Canada to bid on exclusive routes through the airport. Neither WestJet nor Swoop accepted those offers, he says, although Swoop only started operations in the summer of 2018.

Bob Cummings has stated that the airlines proudly refused to participate in the program on principle, stating that exclusivity is never suitable for consumers or the public interest. «Having multiple carriers serving a market or route is how healthy competition works. It’s in the best interest of the consumer to have multiple carriers, more choice and lower rates. Flair and YKF’s multi-year exclusivity agreement confers an unfair advantage to an operator to the detriment of consumers in the region», he said in a statement. But Chris Wood says the show has proven quite successful since it started. Offering exclusivity gives airlines the opportunity to test a route without the fear that a competitor will come in and cut their prices, intimidating them off the route. «This was something that was very attractive to certain carriers. It basically allows them to build a route without the threat of predatory behavior that we’ve seen in this country before», says Chris Wood. Flair, in particular, has been responsible for significant growth at the airport in recent years. Before Flair began flying out of the airport, Waterloo saw approximately 100,000 passengers pass through in a year. It expects 700,000 travelers in 2022 and hopes to reach 1 million in 2023. Most of that traffic comes through Flair, says Chris Wood. The airport has plans to add another thriving airline, Pivot Airlines, to its roster in the near future.

Anti-competitive exclusivity

Commercial aviation industry experts say measures that reduce competition on routes and artificially block other airlines from adding service are not illegal, but may be unfair. «Exclusivity, by its very nature, means keeping competition out. So while Flair is talking about bringing lower fares to Canadians, especially people from Waterloo, that’s anti-competitive, in my opinion», says John Gradek, Professor of Aviation Leadership at McGill University. The only other example of exclusivity he knows of in Canada is Porter Airlines at Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto, but John Gradek says the difference is that the airline is Canadian-owned.

Frederic Dimanche, Director of the Ted Rogers School of Hotel and Tourism Management, says that he is torn by the concept. He points out that it’s not unusual for regional airports to offer special deals or cheaper landing fees to attract low-cost carriers to their markets, but he’s never heard of an exclusivity deal in Canada. While he says the idea of exclusivity goes against the kind of competitive atmosphere that Canadians and regulators would like to see in the airline industry, he points out that testing new routes requires a considerable amount of time, research and risk. Airports want airlines to be successful in building their list of destinations, and so it might be a prudent approach to allow exclusivity and let a route establish itself in the market before opening it up to competitors, he says. «They don’t want any other airline to come in and cannibalize the potential success of a route», says Frederic Dimanche.

In his deposition, Stephen Jones accused Swoop of similar behavior, claiming that many of the budget airline’s routes mimic Flair’s and suggesting that they would abandon those markets if Flair were left without a city. «This is exactly the kind of behavior YKF wanted to avoid by providing time-limited exclusivity in specific markets. It allows an enterprising carrier time to establish a market without WestJet or its stooge, Swoop, offloading capacity and copying the innovator, and then disappearing again when their dirty work is done», said Stephen Jones.

Fifteen-year WestJet veteran at Waterloo, Bob Cummings responded to claims that airlines were not committed to the region, saying Swoop had always planned to expand to the airport as part of its efforts to grow the Ontario market post-pandemic. «We are not the carriers at risk of leaving or being shut down», Bob Cummins said.

Frederic Dimanche says he would be surprised if any airport let that exclusivity reign for long once a route has proven successful. Allowing airlines to have a long-standing monopoly on a route often leads to higher prices than when competing with another airline for passengers, he points out. Chris Wood confirmed that the exclusivity agreements he has with airlines are limited in time, but he did not say how long the agreements tend to last.

From Waterloo’s perspective, letting Flair come in and run a route to Vancouver, for example, gives Ontarians more options when it comes to flying west. Before Flair, Waterloo residents could fly into Calgary and transfer out west or drive to Toronto Pearson International Airport for the flight. Now, they have a little more choice in how they travel. «We’ve increased competition from what we had before because there wasn’t any. Pearson is everybody’s home airport, and we’re trying to change that», says Chris Wood.

Flair is likely to fly through the summer, experts say. If the Department of Transportation and the CTA are interested in increasing competition in Canadian airspace, they are likely to keep Flair in the air for at least a while longer, experts say. John Gradek says that Omar Alghabra probably won’t give Flair the full 18 months he requested to find Canadian financing and meet ownership requirements, but he could see the airline get an additional three or four months. «I don’t think there’s an imminent shutdown of Flair. They’re going to give them some time and probably let Flair get through the summer,» says John Gradek. Frederic Dimanche agrees with that thinking, saying the airline is likely to get a bit of wiggle room in the coming months as it works to iron out ownership concerns. «I think overall, it’s going to be good for the competitive environment in Canada, and that’s something federal agencies should be looking forward to», he says.

Chris Wood says Waterloo has rushed through a US$ 35 million facelift for the airport, including a new departures building to accommodate Flair’s anticipated volume. Construction will be fully completed just one day before Flair launches its expanded off-airport summer travel program on June 7, 2022, assuming its license is current. Chris Wood says that he is very confident that Flair has addressed the concerns raised by the CTA and that he will continue to fly this summer. But if Flair is grounded, he’s also convinced that the market for flying in and out of Waterloo has now been tested. «Now we have the facilities. Now we have the room. So potentially there are other operators who could step in and provide some service if Flair pulls out», says Chris Wood.

Flyadeal tripulación femenina

AW | 2022 05 22 05:07 | AIRLINES

Flyadeal female crew

Flight with all-female crew

The Saudi airline Flyadeal Airways has launched its first flight with an all-female crew. The seven crew members of the airline undertook on Thursday 05/19 the historic flight from the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, to the coastal city of the Red Sea, Jeddah. Since the rise of the young Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman, de facto ruler of the kingdom since 2017, Saudi Arabia has experienced a relative social openness.

The plane, an Airbus A320, operated by Flyadeal, has opened on Thursday 05/19 from the capital Riyadh to the coastal city of the Red Sea, Jeddah, said the company’s spokesman, Emad Iskandarani. The seven crew members are all women. The Saudi civil aviation authority, which confirmed the announcement by Flyadeal, a subsidiary of the national airline Saudi Arabian Airlines, welcomed the support for the inclusion of women in the field of commercial aviation. In 2019, the authority announced the first flight with a Saudi female co-pilot.

Saudi Arabia announced earlier this month that it wanted to become a global air transport hub and triple its annual traffic to 330 million passengers before the end of the decade. The government plans to inject US$ 100 billion into the sector by 2030, launch a new national airline and build a new mega airport in the capital. Some analysts, however, question the ability of Saudi airlines to compete with other heavyweights in the region, such as Emirates Airline or Qatar Airways.

Reino Unido congela activos rusos

UK freezes Russian assets

UK freezes assets of Russian airlines
They prevent the sale of landing slots

Britain froze the assets of three Russian airlines on Thursday 05/19, preventing them from selling landing spaces at UK airports worth up to £50 million/US$62 million. The latest sanctions over Russia’s war in Ukraine prevent state-owned Aeroflot Russian Airlines, Russia’s largest airline, Rossiya Airlines and Ural Airlines, from transferring valuable landing rights, which go unused due to an earlier ban on Russian planes fly to the UK.

Broad international sanctions aimed at pressuring President Vladimir Putin to withdraw his troops from Ukraine are already having a significant impact on Russia, the UK Foreign Office said. Russian oil exports, a key source of revenue for Vladimir Putin’s government, fell 30% in April 2022, and the nation’s economy is forecast to contract as much as 15% this year.

«As Putin continues his barbaric assault on Ukraine, we will continue to target the Russian economy. We have already closed our airspace to Russian airlines. Today, we are making sure they cannot cash in on their lucrative landing slots at our airports», the statement said. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss in a statement.

Ryanair cancela MAX precio lista

Ryanair desiste compra 737 MAX a precio actual

CEO Michael O’Leary: «Boeing is today a headless chicken»

AW-Boeing737MAX_Ryanair001

Recent statements by its main European customer Ryanair are a blow to the American manufacturer, which is trying to regain its credibility after several hard blows to its commercial production lines. The CEO of Ryanair, Michael O’Leary has expressed in an appearance before stock market analysts: «Ryanair is willing to go to the second-hand aircraft market before paying the prices that Boeing asks today». The airline, he explained, is willing to stay true to Boeing, but the manufacturer urgently needs to improve because «they are running around like a headless chicken».

Michael O’Leary, who acknowledged that he needed more 737s but did not want to pay the prices he says Boeing is asking him for, said that «the manufacturer needs to start over in Seattle and improve the current management team or, in his case, change it. We believe that Boeing has to improve a lot what has been delivered to us in the last twelve months”, in a complaint that is also shared by another large client such as Emirates Airline. Saying this to stock analysts is a blow to Boeing, which is trying to regain its credibility. Ryanair is Boeing’s largest customer in Europe and one of the largest in the world.

Ryanair had begun negotiations with Airbus, the European manufacturer, but interrupted them saying that there was no way to understand the prices that the company from the Old Continent was asking for. In the United States, Boeing on previous occasions, regarding statements equally critical of Ryanair, said it would not comment. However, this is the first time Michael O’Leary has more publicly questioned the quality of the aircraft delivered.

SABRE reclama nulidad caso US·Airways

AW | 2022 05 14 15:15 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

Justicia delibera veredicto American-SABRE

Dijo que US Airways no había sufrido ninguna lesión antimonopolio.

SABRE claims mistrial US Airways case

Justice deliberates on American-SABRE ruling

American Airlines and SABRE Corporation are awaiting a jury verdict after a three-week federal antitrust trial concluded Thursday with closing arguments. SABRE quickly filed a motion for a mistrial on Friday, alleging that the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York did not allow evidence about US Airways’ so-called sign-and-sue strategy, while, at the same time, the airline plaintiff at trial included «the improper release to the jury of a highly prejudicial document». The case is US Airways v. Saber Holdings, 11-cv-02725, United States District Court, Southern District of Manhattan, New York.

A lawyer for American Airlines Group Inc. has urged a jury to award the airline nearly US$ 300 million in surcharges and lost profits, arguing that SABRE Holdings Corp. illegally dominated the market for booking airline tickets.

«There’s one company in this travel business that doesn’t compete. And that’s SABRE», Paul Yetter told jurors at the end of a three-week federal trial in Manhattan. Paul Yetter told the panel that Southlake-based SABRE protected its monopoly position by locking up travel agents, tying up airlines and killing off new competition. Fort Worth-based American says it is owed US$ 299.3 million on behalf of US Airways Group Inc., with which it merged in 2013.

If successful, it could collect nearly US$ 900 million under US antitrust laws, which provide triple damages. «The benefits they’ve gotten from that economic power are high prices, windfall profits, and that has hurt US Airways», said Paul Yetter.

US Airways sued SABRE in 2011 alleging that it charged inflated fares for its computerized reservation services. He alleged that a contract he signed with SABRE illegally reduced competition. He says that no competitor in more than thirty years has entered the market to provide a computerized platform for connecting airlines and other travel companies with travel agencies.

SABRE says it acted lawfully and fairly in a competitive marketplace. «My client is being sued for a lot of money. People want to take him to the cleaners over a contract that was freely negotiated and freely executed», Patrick Fitzgerald, Counsel for SABRE, told the jury when it came time for his own closing argument.

Patrick Fitzgerald told jurors that American had not shown that SABRE monopolized the market, and that prices fell during the period covered by the lawsuit. He said that US Airways had not suffered any antitrust injuries. US Airways won a US$ 5.1 million prize in 2016 that tripled to US$ 15.3 million. That verdict was thrown out in 2019 and sent back for a new trial.
