Air India pursues fleet upgrade

Boeing and Airbus in talks to order planes

Tata Sons, which bought the airline from the Government of India in January 2022, has started talks with aircraft manufacturers to acquire candidates such as the Airbus A350-900 and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. The Boeing Company and Airbus Group are in talks with the new owners of Air India Ltd. over an order for a number of new planes, according to people familiar with the matter, part of a plan to rejuvenate the aging fleet.

Tata Sons Pvt., which acquired the debt-laden airline from the Indian government last month, has begun talks with aircraft manufacturers and aircraft lessors. Talks are at a preliminary stage, with Tata Sons evaluating the right mix of fleets and no decisions yet on the type of aircraft or the size of the order, according to the people. The airline is in talks for new Airbus or Boeing narrow-body jets that form the mainstay of Air India’s domestic and short-haul operations, as well as wide-body jets capable of flying as far as the United States, the people said. A Tata spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A Boeing representative in India said the company is always looking for opportunities and is in talks with current and potential customers about supporting its fleet. An Airbus representative also said the planemaker is in constant discussions with current and potential customers about fleet requirements.

Upgrading Air India’s fleet is crucial for the Tata Group, which in January 2022 took control of the struggling airline after bidding an enterprise value of ₹ 180bn Rupees/US$ 2.4bn. The airline, once known for its premium services and advertisements, has lucrative landing and parking spaces at almost every major airport in the world. But it faces stiff competition from foreign airlines with nonstop services to India, as well as airlines operating from hubs in the Middle East.

«In terms of the fleet, we know we have work to do. We will tackle it with the utmost urgency. We will upgrade our fleet, we will bring modernity to our fleet, we will bring a new fleet», Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran told employees at Air India earlier this month of February 2022 in an internal company briefing. Air India will increase the number of aircraft it has, both wide-body and narrow-body, and will move to do so with speed in the coming months, Chandrasekaran told staff. The average age of Air India’s fleet is over ten years.

Binomial fleet

The airline currently has 153 aircraft in its fleet, according to its website. That includes 49 wide-body aircraft made by Boeing and Airbus, including the best-selling 737 and 320 family jets, making for a tricky mix considering each type of aircraft requires separate skill sets of pilots and crew. A deal for 50 new Boeing 787-9s could be valued at US$ 14.6 billion at list prices, though discounts are common in deals this big. Air India, one of the world’s first buyers of the Dreamliner, operates older versions of the fuel-efficient workhorse, though several remain grounded due to lack of parts.

Airlines often order jets years in advance because planemakers’ manufacturing capacity is limited and getting early delivery slots remains a challenge. Demand for narrow-body aircraft, such as those in the A320NEO and 737 MAX aircraft families, is particularly high, meaning it can take years after an order is placed to add aircraft to a fleet. A deal for 100 737-9 MAX planes could be worth nearly US$ 13 billion.

Perspectivas QANTAS flota Airbus

AW | 2022 02 25 23:11 | AIRLINES / INDUSTRY

Qantas planea finalizar pedido Airbus a mediados de 2022

Qantas-Isologotype

Outlook QANTAS fleet Airbus

Qantas plans to finalize Airbus order in mid-2022

Qantas_Isologotype

Qantas Airways CEO Alan Joyce has announced updates on the airline’s two major projects involving aircraft from European constructor Airbus Group‘s fleet. During a discussion session of the half-year financial results of the largest Australian airline, the CEO has announced the financial losses, the new routes and the path to recovery of the airline. He also discussed the national fleet order and has announced a quick update on Project Sunshine.

Winton Project

Qantas Airways has named its domestic fleet renewal program Project Winton, after the city in Queensland where the carrier began its history. At the end of the year 2021, the airline was busy deciding the type of aircraft that would form the backbone of its future domestic needs. As Qantas entered the final stages of discussions with aircraft and engine manufacturers, the planes in dispute included the usual suspects such as the Boeing 737 MAX family, the Airbus A320NEO family, and even the A220 family and Embraer E- Jet E2.

The Qantas Group had an existing order for more than 100 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, but these were mainly destined for its subsidiary Jetstar. While Airbus hoped to close another lucrative aircraft deal with Qantas, Boeing was pinning its hopes that the airline would replace its current domestic jet, the 737, with the more advanced fourth-generation version of the type, the 737 MAX.

In December 2021, in a major blow to the American manufacturer Boeing, Qantas Airways opted for Airbus narrow-body aircraft for its future domestic operations. The airline announced that it would purchase forty units of the A320NEO and A220 family aircraft with options for a further 94 options. The first forty aircraft will be divided into twenty A321XLR Extra Long Range (20) and twenty A220 (20). Taking into account all the options in the deal, Airbus was seeking a potential order of more than 130 narrowbodies over a ten-year period. The order was expected to be finalized sometime in the middle of this year 2022, and Alan Joyce recently gave a further update that everything seems on track, saying, «Subject to Board approval, we look forward to finalizing the order for the renewal of our domestic fleet with Airbus, a decade-long program we call Project Winton, by the middle of the calendar year. These aircraft will be the backbone of Qantas Domestic, offering vast savings in fuel consumption and representing a large part of our future». Qantas Airways expects that the Airbus fleet will enable better network options and route economy and that its Pratt & Whitney GTF engines will deliver fuel savings of between 15%-20%.

Sunshine Project

The Qantas boss also recently gave an update on Project Sunshine. It was discussed in the half-year earnings session, where Airbus’ modified A350-1000 aircraft with extra fuel tanks have been relied on to connect Sydney and Melbourne with direct flights to cities including London and New York. While Alan Joyce did not give any specific details about the A350 order, he did mention that work on Project Sunshine has started again, saying: «Work on Project Sunrise has also resumed. Our latest customer research shows that Demand for direct long-haul flights is even stronger than it was pre-COVID, so our focus on providing non-stop service from Sydney and Melbourne to New York and London remains».

Flynas celebra entrega 21º A320NEO

AW | 2022 02 25 22:44 | AIRLINES / INDUSTRY

Flynas celebrates delivery of 21st A320NEO

Incorporates its 21st Airbus A320NEO from an order of 120 units

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s leading low-cost airline Flynas has recently added its 21st Airbus A320NEO to its facilities in Riyadh. Flynas signed an agreement with Airbus Group in 2017 to take over 120 A320NEO family aircraft. The Riyadh-based airline has grown significantly since its founding under the Nas Air name in 2007 and is rapidly growing its dedicated fleet of the Airbus A320 family. The Saudi carrier has long been fascinated by the aircraft type’s efficiency, a feature that allows it to be its country’s leading low-cost carrier while balancing passenger comfort.

AW-Flynas_002

Last week, another member of the growing A320NEO family joined low-cost carrier Flynas as the first aircraft to be introduced in 2022. Delivery of the 21st aircraft took place at the Airbus facility in Toulouse, France. The purchase and lease agreement was announced last month and will see CDB take delivery of the remaining narrow bodies and lease them to the airline. This delivery was made through a purchase and lease agreement with the leasing company CDB Aviation, which is a wholly owned Irish subsidiary of China Development Bank Financial Leasing Co. It is the first of five units in the middle of the transaction between the airline and firm. Patrick Hannigan, CEO of CDB Aviation shared the following in a statement: «This latest addition of NEO aircraft to flynas’ growing fleet advances their ambitious plans to expand the fleet and increase the scope of their offerings in line with the Vision 2030 Program. The Saudi market continues to recover strongly after the pandemic and flies will be well positioned to take advantage of significant pent-up demand».

Peter Goodman, Marketing Director of CDB Aviation, said: «Our commercial team continues to address the requirements of airlines in all corners of the world, leveraging our platform’s leading position in the market and wide-reaching financing solutions for improve their fleets and increase operations in the face of progressive recovery throughout the global air transport industry».

Buscan recuperación activos Itapemirim

AW | 2022 02 23 21:10 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

Nieta fundador Itapemirim denuncia embrollos

They seek recovery assets Itapemirim

Granddaughter of Itapemirim founder denounces mess
They claim to recover group assets

Businesswoman Andrea Cola, granddaughter of Grupo Itapemirim founder Camilo Cola, said in an interview with The Globe’s Capital column that she and her grandfather warned ministers and parliamentarians in 2020 about the risks of authorizing the creation of Itapemirim Transportes Aéreos that suddenly ceased operations in December 2021 causing chaos at airports and leaving thousands of passengers without service. «In 2020, I went with my grandfather to Brasilia and alerted the Minister of Infrastructure Tarcísio Freitas about what was happening in the judicial recovery. We warned that just like Sidnei Piva, owner of Itapemirim, he did not fulfill the commitments made to us», said Andrea Line. Camilo Cola passed away in November 2020, at the age of 97.

In December 2021, Tarcísio Freitas said that Itapemirim had all the conditions to operate. According to the Minister of Infrastructure, the airline had met all the necessary requirements to obtain certification from the ANAC (National Civil Aviation Agency) regulatory agency. The report was requested by the Ministry of Infrastructure and awaits its return. Andrea was an Itapemirim executive for 16 years and was already out of the company when her grandfather and father requested judicial recovery and sold the business to Piva for R$ 1 in 2016. Now she is involved in a dispute with him to try to recover part of the family estate.

The Association of Labor Creditors and Former Employees of the Itapemirim Group criticized the expenses with the airline. These amounts, according to the association, could be spent on paying the company’s debts to the group’s creditors. According to a report from the administrator that accompanies the judicial recovery of the group, until November 2021, around R$ 32.3 million of the company’s money was spent with its air arm.

Creditors are trying to obtain court authorization to hold a meeting and remove Sidnei Piva from administration. As a creditor of the company, Andrea Cola says that she has been active in the judicial recovery process. «I have been trying to denounce the sickle, but they accuse me of interrupting the process, of litigating in bad faith. I have received several fines from the justice system». According to her, in the agreement made with Sidnei Piva there was a combination that personal properties that were not related to the operation would be transferred back to the family. «But on December 19, 2016 they managed to take over the company in court before we finalized the contracts. In March of the following year, Sidnei entered into an arbitration clause asking for the validation of the contract and since then we have been fighting. The apartment of Avenida Atlântica was busy. Sidnei broke in, changed the lock. It seems you spent New Year’s Eve there. He didn’t bother to return even my grandfather’s clothes and shoes. My grandfather used to go there a lot. It was his second home. I don’t even know if this property will come back to us one day», added Andrea Cola. When asked if she thinks the road business can still survive, she says that she hopes the rest of the assets will revert to the company for payment of creditors. «But we need to have a new assembly to appoint a comptroller. I think the company can still recover. The image is tarnished, but it is a strong brand. I believe in business. Brazil travels by bus».

At the beginning of February 2022, the São Paulo Court of Justice (TJ-SP) determined the search and seizure of 61 buses from the Itapemirim highway. The decision was made by Judge Fernanda de Carvalho Queiroz at the request of Banco Moneo, a financial institution linked to the Marcopolo company, which produces buses. According to the magistrate, the bank showed that Itaperimim is a debtor to the institution. Andrea Cola also says that Sidnei Piva has to be eliminated. «If he stays, it will be a matter of time before bankruptcy. With a bona fide manager, companies can still be saved».

Buscam recuperação de ativos Itapemirim

Neta de fundador de Itapemirim denuncia bagunça
Eles alegam recuperar ativos do grupo

Sidnei arrombou, trocou a fechadura.

The South Korean antitrust regulator has said this Tuesday 02/22 that it has decided to conditionally approve an agreement by Korean Air Lines, the country’s largest airline, to buy the indebted Asiana Airlines Inc. The decision of the Fair Trade Commission (FTC ) does not complete Korean Air’s proposed acquisition of the country’s second-largest airline, as antitrust regulators in major countries such as the United States are still reviewing the deal.

Since January 2021 the FTC has been reviewing Korean Air’s agreement to buy a 63.88 percent stake in Asiana Airlines. The deal, valued at about ₩1.8 trillion won/US$1.5 billion, was signed in November 2020. The regulator said it decided to give the deal conditional approval, as it determined that the merger of the two airlines could hamper competition on a significant number of flight paths. The FTC said the merger of the two airlines could hurt competition on 26 international and 14 domestic routes among the 87 overlapping routes they have been operating. As conditions for the approval, designed to ease monopoly concerns, the FTC required the two full-service airlines to return some takeoff or landing slots at airports and reset flight licenses on certain routes over the next 10 years. , if other airlines seek to operate on them. The regulator also said the two airlines will be restricted from increasing flight fares and prohibited from reducing the number of flight seats or provision of services until corrective measures are implemented. Nor should they change their mileage accrual systems, so that they are more disadvantageous for their customers than those that were implemented in 2019, prior to the pandemic.

FTC Chief Joh Sung-wook told a news conference that the decision will help ease business uncertainty in the aviation industry and prevent consumers from being harmed by the merger. She added that it is expected to lay the groundwork to maintain or stimulate competition in the sector. The approval is expected to help revamp the country’s aviation sector, which has been reeling from the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic. However, critics said the conditions put forth by the FTC still appear insufficient to address monopoly concerns in the domestic aviation industry.

Korean Air requested on 01/2021 the review of its merger with Asiana to the antitrust regulators of fourteen other countries, including the United States, the European Union and China. The company has received approval from eight countries so far, including Singapore, Turkey and Vietnam. The FTC said it plans to hold a deliberation session to add potential measures that would have to be implemented by both airlines, depending on the results of reviews by foreign regulators.

If the acquisition is completed, Korean Air, which is currently the 18th largest airline in the world in terms of fleet, is expected to become the 10th largest globally. Korean Air said earlier that it aims to launch a combined entity with Asiana in 2024 after completing an acquisition process by next year 2023.

Aéreas Argentinas reprograman vuelos

AW | 2022 02 22 09:45 | AIR TRAFFIC / AIRLINES / AVIATIONORGANISMS

Argentine Airlines reschedules flights

Due to strike by air traffic controllers, airlines rescheduled flights

The ATEPSA Aeronautical Union will carry out forceful measures on Tuesday, February 22 and Thursday, February 24 and between March 1 and 5, 2022 for domestic flights throughout the country. Last week, the union that brings together air traffic controllers announced forceful measures at all airports in Argentina, which would be carried out sporadically. The situation forced airlines to modify their flight schedules, with delays and some cancellations.

The next force measures of the Association of Technicians and Employees of Protection and Security to Air Navigation are scheduled for Tuesday 02/22 from 11:00 a.m. to 01:00 p.m. and from 05:00 p.m. to 07:00 p.m. and Thursday 02/24 from 05:00 p.m. to 07:00 p.m. Then there is a schedule with cessation of activities of several hours per day between 01/03 to 5/03. The union action measures include the suspension of flight takeoff authorizations.

Rescheduling

Aerolíneas Argentinas had to reschedule 102 flights for Tuesday 02/22, which means that 34 flights have advanced their departure time and 68 flights have been delayed. Passengers received information about the new schedule of their rescheduled flights. On Friday 02/18, the company had to reschedule 101 departures, which affected more than 12,000 passengers. “These types of measures throw away a good part of the effort that all the players in the industry have been making to sustain the operation and jobs in a context as difficult as that of the last two years. We hope that the measure is reviewed and that it does not affect the long carnival weekend, which is a very important date for the country’s tourism industry», said Pablo Ceriani, CEO of Aerolíneas Argentinas.

JetSmart Airlines Argentina 18 flights were rescheduled for Tuesday 02/22, which affects 3,300 passengers; and 21 flights for Wednesday 02/23 affecting 3,900 air transport users. Last week, the airline had rescheduled 24 flights with more than 4,400 passengers who had to alter their flight.

Flybondi Líneas Aéreas has rescheduled its flight network corresponding to 02/22, 23 and 24, with 46 modified flights that include 8,234 affected passengers. “The impacted passengers have already been notified. We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers by forceful measures that have been adopted irrationally and without the slightest consideration of the negative impact they generate”, they expressed from Flybondi.

The Argentine Air Navigation Company (EANA) has indicated that the union claim corresponds to the revision of the salary guideline. The general secretary of ATEPSA, Jonatan Doino, pointed out that the claim is due to the lack of personnel that forces them to carry out tasks with staff below the minimum security established for the country’s airports, as explained in a statement. However, from EANA they pointed out that the union claim corresponds to the revision of the salary guideline. “We have offered, with a great effort from the entire National State, 55% to close the 2021 parity, that is above inflation, guaranteeing wages in very difficult times for the industry in general. The effort has been made by the entire State, not only EANA, which is the Argentine company that guarantees air navigation services, but also the entire National Executive. Operational safety is clearly guaranteed. We are a responsible party for that security to be so. In the operation there are always risks, we mitigate those risks constantly, and it is an operation that is regulated internationally, not only by the national aeronautical authority but also by international organizations”, said Gabriela Logatto, President of EANA.

ATEPSA brings together air traffic controllers, aeronautical information and communications service workers, navigation and surveillance communications technicians, aeronautical meteorology, and search and rescue services. They are the ones who organize air navigation, authorize the takeoffs, routes and landings of aircraft that transport cargo and passengers in Argentine airspace. They are distributed in fifty-four airports and aerodromes in Argentina.
