OSF exempts AirAsia-Airbus complaint
The consultation authorized Airbus’ sports sponsorship linked to AirAsia
Malaysia’s airline group AirAsia Group has reported on 03/20 that the internal investigation into allegations of corruption by Britain’s Office of Serious Fraud (OSF) has found that its acquisition process with Airbus was robust and justifiable.
In a presentation to the stock exchange, the airline said that Airbus’ sponsorship of a sports team was revealed and supported by the board of AirAsia Berhad (AAB), the name of AirAsia Group was known at the time. «The sponsorship showed demonstrable benefits to the AirAsia Group and was not tied to any AAB purchase decision», the group said.
In early 2020, AirAsia was embroiled in allegations that Airbus’ US$ 50 million sponsorship of a now-defunct sports team, jointly owned by two senior AirAsia executives, influenced the group’s decisions about acquiring aircraft. The corruption allegations were revealed as part of a record US$ 4 billion settlement that Airbus agreed with France, Britain and the United States.
Prosecutors said the airline had bribed public officials and hidden payments as part of a pattern of corruption. AirAsia said the two executives, Chief Executive Tony Fernandes and President Kamarudin Meranun, had adequately disclosed their interests to the board of directors and abstained from discussions related to sponsorship.
The airline said independent reviewer BDO Governance Advisory also found that the sports team’s sponsorship was in compliance with the procedures. The AirAsia board has reinstated the executive positions of Tan Sri Fernandes and Datuk Kamarudin, who had withdrawn on February 3, 2020. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission previously said it would examine the OFS allegations. The agency did not respond yesterday to a request to update its investigation. The Malaysian Securities Commission also said it would examine whether any securities laws had been violated. The regulator said the matter was currently being reviewed and was not free to comment further. ![]()
OSF mengecualikan aduan AirAsia-Airbus

United States airlines seek Federal Aid for $ 50 Billion
The industry is crucial to the efficient functioning of the US economy, it allows not only business travel, but also leisure travel, which is an important sector of the United States economy. Commercial aviation taxes and fees reached US$ 26 billion in 2019, or roughly US$ 71 million per day, according to Airlines for America, the trade group for the domestic industry. Billions of that total are paid by airline passengers, not airlines, although higher fares and taxes would lower the price of airline tickets and could spur more demand. But even low fares won’t get passengers back on planes amid warnings from public health officials that people should stay home and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary. «When medical experts say our health and safety depend on people staying home and practicing social distancing, it is almost impossible to run an airline business», United Muñoz and Kirby executives said in their letter to employees.
