Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission investigates AirAsia-Airbus case
Malaysian regulator will investigate whether AirAsia violated the rules in the Airbus agreements
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has announced on Sunday 02/02 that it will examine whether AirAsia Group and the AirAsia X unit violated securities laws after UK prosecutors accused executives of receiving bribes from Airbus Group to buy airplanes. The accusations came to light on Friday 31/01 when Airbus agreed to a record US $ 4 billion deal with France, Britain and the United States. Prosecutors said he had bribed public officials and hidden payments as part of a pattern of global corruption.
The Office of Serious Fraud (SFO) of Great Britain said on Friday 31/01 that between October 2013 and January 2015, the then Airbus EADS Group paid US$ 50 million to sponsor a sports team that was jointly owned by two people described as AirAsia Executive 1 and Executive 2. The SFO said the executives were rewarded for an order for Airbus aircraft, an accusation that AirAsia denied on Saturday 01/02 at night.
«The Malaysian Securities Commission will examine the accusations and review all available evidence to determine if there is a violation of the securities laws», said Syed Zaid Albar, Chairman of the regulator, in a statement. Directors who act with the intention of causing an unfair loss to their listed companies may face jail or fines, he said. The anti-corruption agency in Malaysia has already launched a separate investigation into the allegations.
AirAsia said in its statement on Saturday 01/02 that it had not been involved in the investigation of the Airbus SFO nor had it given it the opportunity to provide clarifications. He denied any wrongdoing. The company noted the statement that it would cooperate fully with the relevant authorities when necessary. Airbus said it had no comments. AirAsia, the largest budget airline group in Asia, operates a fleet of 274 aircraft exclusively composed of Airbus. ![]()

American-Mechanics reach tentative agreement
The new salary agreement will allow obtaining bonuses that vary from US$ 3,000 to US$ 6,000 and salary increases between 4% to 18%. This adds to the increases in the payment rate between 23% and 56%, provided by American in 2016. The contract includes a benefit-sharing formula from the best industry that could be a precedent. It provides 10% of the first US$ 2.5 billion of income before American taxes, as well as 20% of income before taxes above US$ 2.5 billion.
The agreement also protects against outsourcing and relocation, two problems that were important for the two unions, the International Association of Machinists and the Transport Workers Union. Together, they represent about 31,000 mechanics and fleet service workers at American. TWU President John Samuelsen said: “This contract is a victory for union members. We have ensured an industry-leading salary increase, significantly improved our working conditions and, more importantly, we increase the amount of aircraft maintenance work that will be done in the United States».

Protests in American
Hundreds of American Airlines pilots gathered at Dallas / Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) on Wednesday 29/01 at their first public demonstration against the airline after a year of negotiations that failed to secure a new contract. The leaders of the Allied Pilots Association (APA), which represents some 14,000 pilots at the Fort Worth-based airline, say the company’s negotiators have moved too slowly, even though both sides had a deadline to reach an agreement in early 2020 when the old contract was amended, said APA spokesman Dennis Tajer.
