AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Aerolíneas will reduce by 90 US$ million by 2018

logo_AerolineasThe CEO of Aerolíneas reported that it will reduce the subsidies for the Airlines Group by less than 90 US$ million

The losses of US$ 6 million left by the unemployment in Aerolíneas Argentinas tense the relationship with unions. The measure that immobilized the fleet of Aerolíneas/Austral* stopped flights for 24 hours last week, had a cost equivalent to 6.6% of the subsidy that the company will need to operate in 2018.

In less than a week, the five aeronautical unions in conflict in Argentina (UPSA, APLA, UALA, APA and APTA) ended a 24-hour strike that paralyzed all Aerolíneas Argentinas and Austral flights and affected some 40,000 passengers who were stranded in airports across the country and the world. And then, they canceled seven trips abroad.

In numbers, the leadership of the Aerolíneas Argentinas / Austral Group wants to close the parity in a percentage that does not exceed 20% with trigger clause for inflation, where it starts at 16% to which would add an additional non-remunerative. On the side of the unions, the floor to negotiate is 27% increase and remunerative.

The Minister of Transport, Guillermo Dietrich, questioned the union delegates for taking the passengers hostage. The measure of force that paralyzed not only the local flights but left the planes on the ground abroad was «excessive» and showed greater aggressiveness than normal.

For the CEO of Aerolíneas Argentinas, Mario Dell’Aqua, the main problem with unions is not wage bargaining, something he says is done through «normal» channels but he understands that the conflict is due to political positioning. In the same line, Minister Dietrich said yesterday that trade unionists «are affecting Aerolíneas and clearly many of them have a role in the political life of Argentina, many of them have declared themselves totally opposed to doing well to President Mauricio Macri».

Aerolíneas Argentinas reported that it will reduce to less than US$ 90 million the amount of subsidies that will be required from the central administration for its operation in 2018. «In 2016 we received US$ 340 million, a figure that was reduced to US$ 170 million in 2017 and will fall to less than US$ 90 million in 2018», said the CEO. According to the executive, this was possible because it went from 72% of average occupancy to 86% today, with a 28% increase in the sale of tickets in 2017, in relation to 2016. A \ W

Incremento HUB-Córdoba de Aerolíneas

AW-70089771

AW | 2017 11 08 11:05 | AIRLINES

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Increase HUB-Córdoba Airlines

AA-AU Isologotype.pngThe HUB-Córdoba Center distributes half of the tickets on routes of the Argentine airline that do not pass through Buenos Aires

The distribution center for flights that Aerolíneas Argentinas launched in Córdoba called «Norcorsur» just over six months ago has become a key element in the company’s growth and competition strategy.

Almost 85% occupancy of the seats between April-October 2017, the hub is equivalent to 50% of the routes that operates Aerolíneas Argentinas-Austral traffic in the interior without passing through Buenos Aires.

The Aerolíneas Group reported between April-September 2017, an increase of 55% year-on-year the number of passengers passing through Córdoba. Aerolíneas Argentinas is more concentrated inside borders. «Our vigilance is the cabotage», remarked the president of Aerolineas Argentinas, Mario Dell’Acqua. It is logical to suppose, because it does not want to lose local market in front of the opening of the competition. Flybondi will soon begin its operations in Córdoba, and it is a very strong square in the interior of Argentina. Other airlines will compete on many routes without passing through Aeroparque.

The development of the network is one of the strategies of the firm, especially in the face of the competition that the new airlines that intend to operate with the promise of having lower fares will raise. «The Córdoba hub makes us have a competitive advantage over other players,» said Dell’Acqua, for whom the low cost concept in the market is «marketer». It occurs within the framework of cheaper rates. In fact, in the domestic market the prices of the tickets sold by Aerolíneas decreased, on average, 21%.

The connections from Córdoba, Aerolíneas reached this year an increase of 16% in the number of cabotage passengers (around 9.5 million passengers transported). The estimates will close 2017 with 13.3 million passengers, which represents a year-on-year increase of 14.7%. This has been the result of increasing the offer of seats by 8.2%, to reach 16.4 million pax annually.

Plans for 2018
The objective is to increase the offer to 13.2 million seats in cabotage. Aerolíneas / Austral will develop new connections from the interior of the country. The Hub-Córdoba will initiate new routes to Posadas (Misiones), which begin in December 2017. The Jujuy-Córdoba-Tierra del Fuego cross-country route is in the airline’s plans. The start of the holiday season will demand seven weekly frequencies for the Córdoba-Mar del Plata route, five to Córdoba-Bariloche, two to Córdoba-Punta del Este (Uruguay) -Iguazú, and three Córdoba-Florianópolis (Brazil).

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

The weight of Delta in the Boeing-Bombardier relationship

Delta Air Lines is a strong operator capable of twisting a crucial negotiation for Boeing

The movement move of the Bombardier–Airbus alliance has put Boeing in trouble in the face of negotiations for the new Delta Air Lines fleet. The CSeries is the apex of the question.

Delta Air Lines in 2011 brought Boeing and Airbus sales representatives to its headquarters in Atlanta to hear why it should order the medium-sized narrowbody Boeing 737-900 or Airbus A321 aircraft to replace similarly sized aircraft in its fleet. After months of negotiations, according to «Glory Lost and Found», a book that contains an account of conversations.

Delta Air Lines weighs a new purchase that faces Boeing and Airbus against each other. The airline is evaluating an order for up to 100 aircraft, valued at US $ 12.7 billion, with the option to buy an additional 100.

The Atlanta-based airline is in advanced discussions on the matter, likely to decide later this year whether it will choose to order Airbus A320 or Boeing 737, according to the report.

But Delta’s decision will come when things get more tense between the operator and Boeing. The US Department of Commerce It has decided to impose preliminary tariffs of around 300% on Bombardier CSeries aircraft, a narrow-range mid-range aircraft with more than 100 seats ordered by Delta. The punitive tariffs followed Boeing’s complaints that Bombardier receives support from the government of Canada (Quèbec) that makes competition unfair.

Imagen relacionada

«Delta can use what happened with the CSeries as a way to tell Boeing, if he wants to make amends again, he may have to give us a better deal than we would have required before», said Seth Kaplan, Airline managing partner Weekly and co-author of «Glory Lost and Found», a book about Delta.

The wave of mergers of the aeronautical industry has intensified the competitions. The chain of mergers created by Delta, United Airlines and American Airlines as they exist today resulted in mixed fleets under the same carrier, with each mega-deal combining an airline that had a large narrow-body Boeing fuselage with an airline that had a large Narrow Airbus fuselage fleet, noted Seth Kaplan.

Instead of sticking to exclusive deals, the feeling among the airline industry today is that airlines can get a better deal if they allow Boeing and Airbus to fight against it.

While companies struggle for an advantage, the dispute over CSeries is still fresh. Delta Management, in its third-quarter earnings call last month, said «we will not pay any fees» for CSeries aircraft, which the carrier said would still keep orders firm.

Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg, meanwhile, when asked about the matter, said in his earnings report that «Delta is a very important customer for us, we want to continue working with them and support them for the future. Therefore, it is not about actions aimed at clients or countries, these are fair trade issues, we are happy to compete, we just want everyone to play with the same rules».

Airbus-Bombardier Alliance
Airbus’ recent decision to obtain a majority stake in the CSeries business, which gives the company a new line of products to market, has added a new crease to the dispute. Cowen analysts, in a research note dated Tuesday, rated Airbus’ position in Bombardier’s CSeries as a «win-win» for both companies. The measure represents a market validation of 100-150 seats, also the size of the market for the plane was not clear, and will face stiff competition from Boeing and Embraer.

At the moment, the horizon is not clear about whether Boeing benefits from Airbus’ decision, which eliminates an independent competitor from the game. But for now, Airbus has many more planes and Delta some doubts more about Boeing. A \ W

El efecto post-huracanes en las Antillas

AW | 2017 11 08 09:10 | AIRLINES MARKET

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

The post-hurricane effect in the Antilles

Airlines have reported millions of losses in the wake of hurricanes in Central America

Airlines serving in the Caribbean are reporting multi-million dollar losses as a direct result of the damage caused by hurricanes Irma and María in September. The post-hurricane effect has caused many airlines to cancel their seasons to the Caribbean due to the damage caused in many islands of the Antilles.

Contraction tourism demand
On Sint Maarten / Saint Martin Island the prospects remain bleak, although the Queen Beatrix Airport is operational, the damage is observed not only in the millionaire repairs that are costing the airport, but also the high cost to repair one of the islands most tourist of the Caribbean.

In October 2017, the general frequency of flights decreased by 6.7% and the capacity of seats by 4.1%, according to the OAG, a global provider of information on flights and trips. Among the most affected destinations, the frequency of flights to Puerto Rico decreased 25.1%, Dominica 13.7%, St. Maarten 12.0%, the British Virgin Islands 11.2%, Anguilla 6.3% and the Islands US Virgins 5.6%. Some destinations that were minimally impacted by the storms also experienced losses, with flights to Saint Kitts and Nevis falling by 34.3%, and Montserrat by 21.5%. As a result, the capacity of all these destinations was adversely affected, as St. Maarten experienced a drop close to 50% and St. Kitts & Nevis and Montserrat with one third less availability than in the month of October 2017.

Decrease in flights
Among the regionally based airlines in the Antilles, LIAT and Caribbean Airlines are the largest capacity providers for the region and both decreased, with LIAT registering a fall of 21.3% and Caribbean Airlines with a decrease of 9.5%. LIAT reports that it expects to end 2017 with a loss of US $ 13.25 million due to the hurricanes and anticipates a loss of US $ 4.6 million between October and December 2017.

According to Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the president of the shareholder governments of LIAT, 408 flights were canceled from June-September, compared with 67 for the same period of the previous year. This was the direct result of airport closures in Dominica, St. Maarten, the British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. These markets represent 30% of total LIAT flights and 34% of total revenues. LIAT anticipates that it will take nine to 12 months for market recovery.

Regarding the performance of the main foreign operators that provide services in the Caribbean, American Airlines, the second provider of services to the region, reported 10.6% fewer flights and the available capacity decreased by 8.5%.

The US airline reported losses of US $ 75 million in the third quarter of 2017 due to hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Amrican had to close thirty of the stations and had the most cancellations of any of the six major airlines serving in the Caribbean. Eight thousand flights were canceled due to bad weather, according to American Airlines President and CEO, Doug Parker.

JetBlue Airways reported losses of US $ 44 million in revenues, and had to cancel 2,500 flights in the third quarter. The airline forecasts a general loss of between US $ 70 and US $ 90 million in the fourth quarter as a result of the subsequent effect of the hurricanes, according to the President and General Manager, Robin Hayes.

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

United Airlines dismisses the Boeing 747

The «Queen of the Skies» makes her final flight on United Airlines

On Tuesday morning at the San Francisco International Airport, United Airlines said goodbye to its latest Boeing 747-400, the so-called «Jumbo» will no longer serve the company.

UA747 flight of United Airlines took off around noon, embarking through the door 86 took off the last passenger flight of the Boeing 747 of United Airlines.

Everyone on board had booked the flight specifically to be in the final game of 747, a special flight scheduled by United in September to give the famous jumbo jet a proper farewell.

«It’s a great ending, there’s no doubt, it’s a fitting farewell in the most dignified way for the ‘Queen of the Skies'», United Airlines CEO Oscar Muñoz said from the plane’s top deck just before takeoff. .

Tickets for the 374-seat jet sold out in hours, despite tariffs of US $ 550 and more for the one-way flight to Hawaii. «It had to be here, it’s the last flight 747. I remember flying it when I was a child, on this exact route: from San Francisco to Honolulu», said John Vanderford, 56, of Detroit, while partying with other customers of flight UA747 before boarding.

After the flight on Tuesday, the plane will return empty to San Francisco before making its last flight to a «boneyard» airline in the desert of California later this week. The recall of the last Boeing 747 ends the 47-year-old career of the iconic United Airlines aircraft, which took its first version of the jet in 1970. Now, with United’s 747 out of service, Delta Air Lines is the only passenger operator in the United States. the United States that still flies the plane. But the days of the Queen of Heaven are numbered there as well.

Delta’s final flight on the 747 is also on the horizon. Delta’s last flight on the plane will arrive next month, which means no US carrier will fly the plane to 2018. Like United Airlines, Delta’s last 747s will also be headed to an Aircraft Cemetery, probably early in the year. 2018

The «Jumbo» is dethroned

The trend extends beyond the US coasts. The passenger version of the 747 faces the loss of fortunes elsewhere. Several other global airlines, including Air France and Cathay of Hong Kong, have recently withdrawn their 747s. Just this week, British Airways, the world’s largest operator of the 747, confirmed its plans to begin withdrawing the plane. Of the 36 that are still in its fleet, British Airways said half will be gone by 2021 and the rest by early 2024.

One of the reasons why the Boeing 747 line has ceased to boom is related to the decline in the use of four engines comes with the new models of two more fuel efficient engines that have gained support among the airlines of the world. Increasingly, operators have turned to the Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 aircraft or the Airbus A350 and A330 when buying new wide-body aircraft.

Perspectives of the Boeing 747

The prospect is not all condemnation for the Boeing 747. The cargo plane version remains a staple for some United States freight carriers, such as UPS and Atlas Air. It is likely that a handful of foreign operators with recent orders for 747 passengers will maintain scheduled service on the jumbo jet for at least the next decade. But, for passenger flights on US airlines the end is near.

«It’s bittersweet, this is a plane that redefined travel, the 747 has been in United’s fleet for 47 years,» said Henry Harteveldt, a veteran of the airline industry who now runs travel consultancy Atmosphere.

In the backdrop, Tuesday’s mood was one of celebration, as United 747 prepared for its sunset trip. United launched a «backspace» theme for the flight, an attempt to recreate the carrier’s first passenger flight on 747. It’s no coincidence that that first flight also flew from San Francisco to Honolulu.

United Airlines has evoked the time of the first flight on Tuesday. The crew donned the retro uniforms of the seventies and items from a menu inspired by those years were offered to customers.

When he first announced the return flight in September 2017, United Airlines promised that the old school environment would help send the Boeing 747 to its final flight, leaving behind the history of the majestic «Jumbo» that he managed to consecrate as «The Queen of Heaven».  A \ W

Boeing estudia mercado 767-797

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Boeing studies market 767-797

The Boeing Co. is evaluating whether to launch a similar aircraft in the middle of the next decade or if it restarts production with some improvements to the Resultado de imagen para Boeing 767 logoBoeing 767. The aerospace giant stopped making the 767 for passengers three years ago, although it manufactures a military refueling plane based on the 767, KC-46, and cargo variants used by parcel companies such as FedEx, among others.

But now Boeing is looking at how it could revive the production of the 767-300ER, which can accommodate approximately 200 passengers, while airlines are looking for ways to upgrade their fleets.

United Airlines and other operators are considering orders for the widebody aircraft to meet the possible demand of the mid-range in aviation. United Airlines is seeking more information on «several wide-body aircraft, including the 767», as it seems to replace its previous versions of that model.

Talking about the restart of a 767 passenger plane occurs when Boeing weighs a new medium-sized plane, which some have called the «Boeing 797«, which would help curb losses in the market share of the increasingly popular Airbus A321NEO.

aw-7003711.png

During 2017, Boeing launched the 737-10 MAX, its largest narrow-body aircraft, as a provisional measure before a planned 797. The MAX 10 can accommodate between 188-204 in typical two-class configurations, but has a maximum capacity of 230 pax.

Meanwhile, airlines still continue to find use for the Boeing 767, a plane that entered service in the early eighties. Direct non-stop Delta Air Lines service from Indianapolis to Paris, which begins in May, will use a 767-300ER. The company announced those plans in May. United, in July, said it would use the 767 to expand the service between New York and Newark to Rome.

Meanwhile, at the Boeing factory they are still evaluating the possible replacement candidate, the Boeing 797, a mid-range aircraft that could effectively battle the Airbus A321NEO. But, meanwhile, we will have to hope to have what the market decides. A \ W

Aeroflot Russian Airlines considerando nuevos pedidos de narrowbodies

AW | 2017 11 07 10:50 | AIRLINES

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Aeroflot considers new orders for narrowbodies

Resultado de imagen para aeroflot logoAeroflot Russian Airlines is considering orders for new generation aircraft

Aeroflot is considering an order to renew its aeronautical fleet of 146 A320-200 and 54 Boeing 737-800. The new proposals are aimed at looking at the narrow-fuselage Airbus A320NEO and Boeing 737 MAX, a senior executive said on Tuesday.

The Deputy Director General of Strategy and Alliances of Aeroflot, Giorgio Callegari, reported on the possible order within the framework of the CAPA Asia 2017 Summit. «Probably next year, at least, we will know the address, it will be a considerable order», he said, refusing to provide the estimated numbers. Callegari said that Aeroflot wanted to retain the narrow bodies of Airbus and Boeing in its fleet because it used them in different seating configurations and did not want to depend on a single manufacturer.

Aeroflot, which has an average fleet age of only 4.1 years. With the new orders the company will be placed with a more modern fleet in the region and allowing to improve its service and significant savings in fuel.

The conditions of the Russian aviation market were particularly challenging in 2015 and 2016, after US and European sanctions, coupled with weak oil prices, hit the Russian economy and the ruble, killing consumer demand. Demand began to recover along with the economy and Aeroflot has benefited from its scale and the bankruptcies of Russian operators Transaero in 2015 and VIM Airlines this year.

«The market is showing us that we are right and it offers us the possibility to grow, others do not seem to have such a successful approach, it makes some market segments more accessible because they stop working,» said Giorgio Callegari.

However, Aeroflot reported a 40% drop in its net income. Aeroflot is a member of the SkyTeam alliance with airlines such as Delta Air Lines, Air France KLM SA and China Eastern Airlines Corp Ltd. It has codeshare agreements with other airlines, but has yet to agree on a joint venture agreement that allows it to coordinate the programming and prices. A \ W
