Argentina airlines bear the crisis
Airlines bear the pandemic crisis
The Government of Argentina is finalizing details of a package of measures to protect employment during the new quarantine period that will last until Easter until April 14, 2020. It has launched the Productive Recovery Program (Repro) for companies in crisis, the expansion of activities considered essential and the possible empowerment of sectoral agreements on suspensions with a salary reduction.
It is a race against the clock, where the pandemic effect has pierced every sector, including commercial aviation. The tourism sector with more than 1.1 million direct and indirect jobs, the tourism sector has also been hard hit by the economic situation, eagerly awaiting official measures. The item was one of the most affected by the mandatory isolation that closed the borders, prevented hotel guests from staying and forced the cancellation of flights.
Aerolíneas/Austral
State airlines Aerolíneas Argentinas/Austral Líneas Aéreas is no stranger to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. The company had announced more special flights to different cities in the interior of the country that were being carried out to maintain connectivity in the framework of repatriation from international flights. Starting from the new restrictions imposed by the Government to prevent the spread of the virus, the airlines totally canceled domestic flights in Argentina.
Latam Airlines Argentina
Latam Airlines Argentina has announced the cancellation until the end of April of all its services in the country attributed to the restrictions imposed by the Government on the movement of people and the sharp drop in demand for tickets as a result of the pandemic.
Latam Airlines had announced on Sunday 03/30 that it was further cutting its regional operations from Santiago de Chile, limiting it to five flights to Brazil; and it has abolished flights to Argentina. The statement explained that “due to the travel restrictions established by the authorities and the lower demand due to the Covid-19 pandemic, its domestic and international operations in the country are temporarily suspended until April 30. All passengers with canceled flights do not need to take any immediate action. The value of your ticket will be automatically kept as a credit for future trips, or you can reschedule the date of your flight, at no cost, until December 31 of this year”.
Regarding the restart of operations, they explained: “The reopening of routes will depend on changes in travel restrictions imposed by the authorities in the country and in the different countries where the company operates, and on-demand conditions, and they will be informed opportunely».
Latam Airlines had cut its operations globally. In addition, it promoted the application of a 50% salary cut plan among its highest-income employees to allow those who earn the least to continue receiving 100% of the salary. This measure generated the reaction of the unions in Argentina, where the company has a staff of more than 2,000 employees.
Flybondi Líneas Aéreas
Flybondi Líneas Aéreas has announced the suspension of its operations until April 30, 2020, as measures to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. The company’s operations are suspended, both for national and regional flights. Sales remain active for tickets after this suspension date and on May 1, 2020, the company plans to resume operations but is subject to change in accordance with government decisions. Those who have already purchased a ticket for the suspension period will receive a coupon for the amount of the ticket paid and it will be possible to reschedule the ticket for flights from April 30, 2020.
Sebastián Pereira, CEO of Flybondi, analyzes the general panorama and points out that “this pandemic has generated a global crisis and we, at Flybondi, know that it is time to act more than ever for the good of society. The priority now is to take care of the general population, which is what we have most important: our families, our employees, and our passengers. It is not easy for an airline to suspend the operation, but due to the measures adopted in our country, we have the commitment and the responsibility to contribute and protect ourselves to return even stronger when conditions are adequate”.
JetSmart Airlines Argentina
The ultra low cost airline JetSmart has kept a low profile in the face of the health crisis that has unfolded in recent weeks. Although he is part of one of the industries hardest hit by the Coronavirus, CEO Estuardo Ortiz remains confident that the company’s light cost structure will allow him to get ahead in this difficult scenario. Last week, the company linked to the international fund Indigo Partners announced that it will operate a total of ten national and four international routes during the month of April, equivalent to 12% of its operation. This, because in his opinion there is still a demand to be met, despite the fact that the figures announced by the Government indicate that the occupational factor of the planes fell to 30%. The current situation does not change the long-term plans in the region, whose mission is to achieve the operation of 100 aircraft by 2026, a plan that to date is 20% complete with a fleet of Airbus 320 (17) and Boeing 737 aircraft. -800 (3), acquired after the purchase of its competitor Norwegian Air Argentina.
JetSmart Argentina will continue to fly even in a minimal percentage because «the company observes that the reactivation, although it will be slow, will be gradual because there is a need to connect and travel around the country for multiple reasons and that is our mission. As long as there are passengers, we will continue flying», says the CEO of JetSmart Argentina.
The company acknowledges that the current crisis will allow it to weather the crisis in a period of four to six months and then recovery will come, so the plans are currently the same. «In Argentina, the government has been fast and drastic in the restrictions on the mobilization of citizens, but as in Chile, demand will be minimal and the percentages will be under 15%. That will rise in May and I would rather think that it could be after July there will be a quick recovery».
The company considers that measures should be taken in the region that do not necessarily mean a subsidy or direct aid, but rather advance initiatives that are simpler, more reasonable and effective, such as the extension of the payment of shipping fees or parking fees for aircraft, VAT related issues, among other details. That is not a cost for the State and that liquidity would greatly help the sector, especially in defense of thousands of employees. «We are in a scenario with a very important impact, but we will defend the employment of all JetSmart employees. I reiterate that this is thanks to our spending format, which is not the case for all airlines. We continue to collaborate closely With our team, with the unions and measures of this nature are discussed internally and I think it is appropriate», said CEO Eduardo Ortíz. ![]()

Airlines in danger of bankruptcy
Using the Z Score method developed by Edward Altman in the 1960s to predict bankruptcies, the listed commercial airlines are identified as having the highest risk of bankruptcy, based on available data, regardless of government bailouts or other sources of financing that could help keep operators afloat. The Z Score involves five variables that measure liquidity, solvency, profitability, leverage and recent performance. The model initially had accuracy rates of more than 95% in predicting bankruptcies, but it dropped to between 80% and 90% based on a year before insolvency, Altman said in a 2018 interview.

The COVID-19 impact in the world
The downward pressure on people’s propensity to travel will be a very troublesome recovery and will take longer than in the past due to multiple levels of problems. The time frame to some extent will depend on how fast COVID-19 develops. American airlines are in a better financial position today than after 9/11.

Airlines vs. Perfect Storm
Southwest Airlines, which carries the largest number of passengers in domestic markets, said it will reduce 1,000 flights a day starting Sunday, 03/22, before a previously planned 20% capacity reduction due to a rapid drop in demand in the short term. term. International routes will be suspended after Sunday until at least May 4, as an increasing number of nations restrict cross-border travel. The latest cut, affecting about a quarter of Southwest’s normal daily departures, will run through April 13. At that time, the 20% reduction begins and lasts until June 5, the carrier said in a statement on Friday 03/20. The airline will target routes that have multiple daily flights and those with the lowest bookings. The international service will be withdrawn after Sunday until at least 04/05. The airline also had to cancel most of its daily flights on Friday 20/03 from Chicago’s Midway International Airport, where the air traffic control tower had to be temporarily closed after three technicians tested positive for the virus.

Airlines take drastic measures
The survival of commercial aviation
The US government said on Saturday it will «immediately» begin work on ways to help the coronavirus-affected aviation and cruise industries as they strive to stop losses and protect jobs. The crisis facing the industry has been accelerated by the latest extension of the US inbound travel ban. With the Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence, announcing on Saturday 14/03 at the White House that British and Irish travelers will also be prohibited from entering the United States for 30 days. At the same press conference, Donald Trump revealed that he had been tested for the virus, and then the White House revealed it had been negative. United States Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin said the government would immediately begin working with Congress to support affected industries. United States restrictions on traveling to the United Kingdom and Ireland will begin at midnight Monday, Pence said. Most non-US citizens who have been in those countries in the past 14 days will not be able to enter the United States. The restrictions do not prevent flights to and from the United States, and Americans and permanent residents can still travel. The United States Chamber of Commerce asked the Government on Friday, 03/13 to «use a package to help affected employers. No business should go bankrupt due to a temporary loss of income as a result of the coronavirus».
