Aéreas instan a FAA extender plazo implementación tecnología 5G
Airlines demand extension 5G term
Airlines urge FAA to extend term implementation 5G technology
American airlines has announced the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to extend the fifth generation technology (5G) technology. Through Airlines For America (A4A), a group that represents the main airlines between them to American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines among others, has urged the United States Aviation Agency to extend a proposed deadline until June 2024 to modernize the altimeters of the airplanes to ensure that they are not susceptible to 5G wireless interference. He has also asked the FAA to review a 5G Proposed Security Directive «to reflect the technical realities and the continuous safe operation of many aircraft». The group warned that a number of airplanes in US fleets will not be modified by July 2023 and unchanged could severely limit operations and cause delays and cancellations of flights, according to the agency’s requested that brings together the US airlines. Wireless communications operators opposed the application.
The altimeters, which provide data on the altitude of an airplane are crucial for landing in bad weather, caused interruptions in some United States airports last year involved international airlines.
In January 2023, FAA proposed to demand that passenger and load aircraft in the United States have tolerant to tolerant Band C 5G or filters approved for February 2024. The agency reiterated on Friday 10/02 that will evaluate all comments all comments. Also on Friday, a coalition that includes Boeing, Airbus Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, pilot and airline unions said the directive «does not provide sufficiently solid controls to guarantee security, since both aviation operations and wireless services evolve together» and It does not include a realistic cost estimate.
Verizon Communications and AT&T voluntarily agreed in June 2022 delaying part of the use of 5G Band C until July 2023, since airlines work to modernize airplanes to ensure that they do not face interference.
Wireless companies spent more than US$ 80 billion in the 5G Band C spectrum, including US$ 52.9 billion of the Verizon company in auction and compensation costs. The CTIA wireless commercial group, which represents Verizon and AT&T, said the FAA provided enough time for airlines and should not extend the deadlines. «When demanding responsibility, FAA is taking important steps to ensure that the radio altimeter performance is more resistant while allowing the timely deployment of 5G in Band C», said CTIA.

In recent years, the Low Cost airline has experienced great growth in passenger traffic on domestic routes thanks to the impulse of economic trips in the country. «When we arrived in Argentina in 2018 there were around 41 million inhabitants and only eight million were traveling by plane, which is a very low level compared to any country», explains Mauricio Sana, Executive Director of Flybondi. In 2019 Flybondi observed an explosion of the market of 12 million passengers has increased to 16 million. Flybondi also managed to break the seasonality of tourism and expand the passenger base throughout the year, reducing the dependence of the high season. In addition, the company has been a pioneer in the development of low cost/low price operations from the aircraft revolution. “We started operations five years ago with the purpose of giving the freedom to fly. The goal was ambitious but we were convinced that it would be possible, and so we were overcome”, says Mauricio Sana.
2023 projections
By 2023, the company plans to add five Boeing 737-800 aircraft additional to the existing twelve completing a total seventeen fleet to strengthen the domestic and regional market with new routes. “We hope to finish the year with 17 aircraft, this should happen in the second semester. We are analyzing new destinations, but everything will be defined depending on how the airplanes will operate”, says the CEO of Flybondi.
In addition, it estimates a turnover close to US$ 500 million and has more than seventy open labor searches throughout the country. Currently, it has more than 1150 employees and generates more than 18,500 indirect jobs.
As of March 2, 2023, the airline will connect the cities of Córdoba and jump with a frequency of three weekly flights (3Frq/S). “We are very happy to connect the province of Córdoba with Salta, as we operate pre pandemia. They are two very important markets. We had great growth and incorporated more airplanes, we add more frequencies to our connectivity network and more destinations”, says Federico Pastori, commercial director of Flybondi.
In this context, Hub Córdoba represents a strong base for the airline because it is the second place with more operations and billing of the airline. It develops three routes operating Córdoba/COR—Buenos Aires/AEP, Córdoba/COR—Bariloche/BRC and Córdoba/COR—Neuquén/NQN; and from March 2023 the Córdoba/COR—Salta/SLA route will work. The total of Córdoba-Buenos Aires traffic represents 20%, Córdoba-Neuquén is 50%and Córdoba-Bariloche 40%. With the incorporation of Córdoba-Salta the airline will be operating twenty-five weekly flights that will pass through the distribution hub of Córdoba.
«After the pandemic, in 2021, we had already returned to the mobility levels of 2019 and we began to grow very fast», says Flybondi’s commercial director enthusiastically.
The company transported more than six million people, of which 20% flew by plane for the first time. The airline currently operates to the following destinations: Buenos Aires, Bariloche, Corrientes, Córdoba, Jujuy, Mendoza, Neuquén, Posadas, Iguazú, Salta, Santiago del Estero, Trelew, Tucumán, Puerto Madryn, Ushuaia, El Calafate and Comodoro Rivadavia.
