Australia aprobaría codeshare a Virgin

Códigos compartidos internacionales para Virgin Australia

Virgin_Australia

Australia would approve codeshare to Virgin

International codeshares for Virgin Australia

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has indicated that it will grant permission for Virgin Australia Airlines to enter into Codeshare agreements with its international partner airlines. Brisbane-based Virgin Australia has several international airlines it wants to share codes with, including Singapore Airlines, United Airlines and Qatar Airways. The Government of Australia has stated that there are no problems of abuse of competition, so it would grant a term for associations of five years.

A codeshare agreement allows an airline to put its flight designator and flight number on a flight operated by another airline, allowing it to expand an airline’s service network without having to put its own aircraft on a route, generating passenger traffic and additional income. Australian airline Virgin Australia «welcomed the preliminary assessment by the ACCC to offer partner flights to Australian consumers under codeshare agreements».

«The ACCC’s preliminary assessment is that these agreements are likely to result in more choice and greater convenience for consumers looking to book international travel that includes connecting flights operated by Virgin Australia. There will be no competitive overlap between the parties on any route under these proposed deals, and other airlines, including Qantas, will provide competition to Virgin Australia and its partners on those particular long-haul international routes», said ACCC Vice President Mick Keogh.

Virgin Australia currently has historical ties with Singapore Airlines, a more recent relationship with United Airlines and Qatar Airways. «We are incredibly focused and excited to create great travel experiences through our partnerships with leading global airlines that will significantly expand Virgin Australia’s footprint internationally», says the Virgin Australia Spokesperson.

The ACCC agency’s announcement will allow final evaluations to definitively approve Virgin Australia’s shared codes, allowing its next decision to be made by the end of July 2022.

Türkiye-Israel acuerdo cielos abiertos

AW | 2022 07 08 09:47 | GOVERNMENT / AIRLINES

Türkiye-Israel open skies agreement

Türkiye and Israel sign historic open skies agreement

The governments of Israel and Türkiye signed on July 7, 2022, for the first time in 71 years, a bilateral agreement that expands air traffic between the two countries. The historic event was conceived from the visit of the Israeli President Isaac Herzog to the Turkish Head of State Recep Erdogan in Ankara in March 2022. It is now expected that Turkish airlines, such as Türkiye Airlines, will be able to carry out direct flights to Israel and vice versa in the case of El Al Airlines. «Aviation relations are a strategic tool for Israel’s economic development and of particular importance for Israel’s regional position», according to Merav Michaeli, Israel’s Minister of Transportation.

Governments of Israel and Türkiye signed the first bilateral agreement since 1951

This is a new attempt to restore diplomatic relations between the nations, which had been in troubled relations since 2010, when they withdrew their respective ambassadors, after Israeli forces stormed a division of ships headed for Gaza, causing resulted in the deaths of nine Turkish activists on board. In 2018, there was a new conflict that worsened the relationship between the countries during the discussion that involved the transfer of the Turkish embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which provoked the same reaction eight years before.

«Today’s agreement by the heads of the civil aviation authorities of the two countries was made possible by open and constructive negotiations in recent weeks and constitutes an important milestone in advancing bilateral relations», according to a statement issued by the office of Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid.

SAS ingresa al Capítulo 11

AW | 2022 07 07 13:57 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

SAS ingresa a protección bancarrota

Scandinavian Airlines_logo.svg

SAS enters Chapter 11

SAS enters bankruptcy protection

SAS_Isologotype_Icon

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has filed for Chapter 11 protection of the United States Bankruptcy Law. The decision responds to a drag on its delicate financial situation, aggravated by the crisis of the policies imposed by the global health crisis pandemic and the pilots’ strike facing the airline.

The current strike affecting SAS Airlines has been the trigger that has determined the decision to seek judicial protection. After the company’s negotiations with the pilots’ union, on Monday, July 4, 2022, the last instance of mediation between the Scandinavian airline and the pilots takes place. The failure of the negotiations leads to an immediate strike, adding to the operational chaos faced by SAS and many airlines and airports in the Northern Hemisphere due to lack of personnel.

AW-SAS Airlines__A321LR-001

SAS Airlines CEO Anko van der Werff acknowledges that the strike accelerates the decision to enter Chapter 11: “Over the last few months, we have been working hard to improve our cost structure and financial position. We are making progress but there is much work to be done and the ongoing strike has made an already difficult situation even more difficult”.

Protection Chapter 11

Under the umbrella of judicial protection, SAS Airlines as the main airline and some of its subsidiaries, have appealed through the Debtor in Possession (DIP) formula, similar to that used by Aeroméxico, Avianca Airlines and LATAM Airlines in Latin America, seeking to negotiate obtaining financing for up to US$ 700 million and renegotiating its debts. In a statement, the company anticipates that it has very advanced negotiations with investors to increase the capitalization of the airline.

For one of the unions, the decision to enter Chapter 11 is a scenario that has been going on for months, an aspect that the administration of SAS Airlines does not deny. However, they interpret it as a direct intention to blame the union for the company’s situation after the failure of the negotiations. For financial analysts, the strike at SAS can represent liabilities of up to US$ 13 million per day. They even estimate that it could eliminate half of its cash flow, which represents a significant financial blow.

SAS Forward

In February 2022, SAS presents a restructuring plan called SAS Forward to convert US$ 1,950 million/€ 1,900 million through debt into shares and raise another US$ 926 million/€ 903 million in capital increase. Both measures to improve the delicate financial situation of the company. In May 2022, the Swedish State decides not to invest any more in the airline. It argues that during the COVID-19 crisis it contributes around US$ 803 million/€ 783 million distributed in four contributions to reorganize its financial structure. The Government of Sweden, which owns 21.8% of the company, indicates that other mechanisms must be sought to solve the problems, although it does not rule out converting its debt into shares. Like many airlines, SAS continues to report losses. In the first half of 2022, it reports a loss of US$ 387 million/€ 377 million. The high price of fuel and the exchange rate against the US dollar are reducing the income obtained from the increase in passenger demand.

TAG receives first ATR 72-500

First ATR 72-500 of an order of four units

TAG Airlines (Transportes Aéreos Guatemaltecos), Guatemala’s flag carrier, took delivery of its first ATR 72-500 aircraft. TAG Airlines and Willis Lease Finance Corporation signed a lease agreement in early 2022. With this new unit, the airline seeks to expand its connectivity in Central America and southern Mexico.

TAG Airlines received the first of four ATR 72-500 aircraft on Tuesday 07/05. This unit, with interim registration M-IBAP, will change to Guatemalan registration TG-ATD, under the ownership of Willis Lease Finance. The plane is 11.68 years old. It has a capacity for 74 passengers in a fully economical configuration in a two by two seating configuration. It had its first flight in November 2010, being delivered by ATR Aircraft that same month. It was operated by Jet Airways between 2010 and 2019.

From Toulouse, France, the plane arrived at La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City/GUA, where it was greeted with the traditional water arch. Julio Gamero, CEO of TAG Airlines, said: «This is an aircraft with the most advanced technology that will allow the company to continue providing the best service and comfort to passengers».

Last March 2022, TAG Airlines signed an agreement with Willis Lease Finance to lease a total of four aircraft of this type that will strengthen the company’s air fleet. The association of TAG and Willis Lease Finance Corporation will allow the Guatemalan airline to lease four aircraft over the next five years.

Austin C. Willis, CEO of the lessor, said in April 2022: «Over the past two years, our regional and specialty asset group has focused on growth through opportunistic acquisitions rather than traditional sales and leases. has made it possible to provide quality aircraft and engines at attractive prices to our customers. We purchased these aircraft at the end of 2021, and we are delighted to have signed these leases with TAG».

The rest of the ATR 72 aircraft that TAG Airlines will receive currently have registrations M-IBAM, M-IBAN and M-IBAQ. They also previously flew with Jet Airways before being acquired by the lessor in 2021.

TAG Airlines is an airline that started operations in 1961. In the last two years, it has had an exciting development, launching routes through Central America under the management of its CEO, Julio Gamero. It currently has a fleet of eight active aircraft in the company. In addition to the recently received ATR, the airline has one Embraer E145LR (1) with a capacity of 50 passengers and six SAAB 340 (6) with a capacity of 34 passengers.

TAG Airlines currently operates 211 weekly flights, according to data provided by Cirium. The airline has thirteen routes, operating mainly from Guatemala’s La Aurora/GUA International Airport. Fly to international destinations such as Cancun (CUN), Belize (BZE), Mérida (MID), Oaxaca (OAX), El Salvador (SAL), San Pedro Sula (SAP), Tapachula (TAP), and Tuxtla Gutiérrez (TGZ).

Guatemala and Honduras sign strategic alliance

TAG Airlines, an airline from Guatemala, and CM Airlines from Honduras, signed a collaboration agreement that will strengthen air connectivity and the promotion of tourist destinations in the Mayan World. The agreement was signed at the Meeting of Ministers of Tourism of the Mayan World Organization (WMO), which took place last week in the Mayan city of Copán, Honduras. Both airlines certified the agreement that will allow joining efforts to promote connectivity actions, as well as the dissemination and promotion of the destinations of the Mayan World. The signing was in charge of Julio Gamero, CEO of TAG Airlines, and Carlos Muorra, CEO of CM Airlines, and the Ministers of Tourism of Honduras, Yadira Gómez; the Secretary of Tourism of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués; the director of the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism, Anayansy Rodríguez; Nicole Solano, Vice Minister of Tourism of Belize; and Mercedes Silva, representatives of the Ministry of Tourism of El Salvador.

The Mundo Maya region, made up of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, has a diversity of tourist attractions, in which the ancestral cultures of indigenous peoples, Afro-descendants and exquisite cuisine stand out. In addition, it has 17 archaeological sites declared a World Heritage Site, beaches on both oceans, Atlantic and Pacific, endless national parks and protected areas with a diversity of wildlife.

AW | 2022 07 06 14:35 | AIRLINES / AVIATION

Aerolíneas buscan entregar aviones a Occidente

Russian airlines would return leases

Airlines seek to deliver planes to the West
European blockade forces exodus of Russian pilots

Airlines had stopped paying Western aircraft leases when the Government of the Russian Federation had established «expropriations» of the aircraft that made up the fleets of Russian airlines. But, Russian air operators are currently agreeing to return the units seeing a compromised horizon. On the other hand, the Russian authorities are putting obstacles in the way of airline pilots in Western Russian aircraft fleets who want to work abroad. But while it appears this was happening, on a smaller scale, even before the pandemic, it was overshadowed by what happened to the Russian airline fleets. These airlines had rented most of their planes to foreign companies, which later requested the return of the planes due to the blockade imposed by the European Union.

In general, the state airlines followed suit and began to register these aircraft in Russia. This effectively caused the planes to steal the property, as the owners (lessors) requested the return of the units. But unofficially at least, some Russian carriers reportedly wanted to return their leased planes.

For example, the cargo airline AirBridgeCargo, a subsidiary of Volga-Dnepr, grounded its fleet of Boeing 747s shortly after the sanctions began. The airline has reportedly suspended or terminated the contracts of many pilots of these planes. But now it appears that AirBridgeCargo and its parent have continued to look for alternative ways to use these planes. At the same time, it wants to maintain its international partnerships, including with lessors, in the hope of better times ahead. Volga-Dnepr has reportedly requested permission to return fourteen cargo planes that it previously leased abroad. These aircraft would then go to the lessor Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, who will lease them to Etihad Cargo. With Volga-Dnepr and Etihad establishing a partnership, the hope is that they can resume operations of these aircraft, under the Etihad Airways AOC. But for this to work in reality, the sanctioning countries (EU) would have to agree. Furthermore, the United States could object to such an agreement. In addition, it would have to be shown that the proceeds from these aircraft operations go to the Russian Federation, this could violate US export restrictions.

The strategies used by S7 Airlines is to send some of its pilots to work in the United Arab Emirates. This agreement would allow the company’s pilots to keep some ratings up to date. S7 Airlines wants to send more than pilots abroad, but the Russian government could impose restrictions on working abroad. This airline also wants to return leased planes to their owners. Specifically, it wants to return two Boeing 737 MAX aircraft (2). One of them belongs to Aviation Capital Group (ACG), the other to Air Lease Corporation (ALC). Currently, it owns a fleet of mostly Airbus aircraft, but also operates Boeing 737-800s (19).

For S7, a return of leased aircraft to their owners would show some good faith. Such a gesture could be useful in the future, but even if the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine ends soon, the lessors would be cautious in restoring the trust shattered by the Russian Administration’s political violations of human rights, something that it will take a long time to rebuild.
