Argentina prohíbe vuelos Cubana

AW | 2022 06 24 12:07 | AIRLINES / AIR TRAFFIC / GOVERNMENT

Argentina bans Cubana flights

Bans flights with Boeing 737 of Aerolineas Estelar

Currently, more than 200 Argentine passengers are stranded in Havana because the Argentine authorities do not allow the state airline and the Cuban flag Cubana de Aviación to fly to Buenos Aires with the Boeing 737-300 registration YV630T, rented from Aerolineas Estelar four weeks ago to to be able to comply with its route network, for not having the flight permits in order. The reason would be an alleged link between the private Venezuelan airline and the Nicolás Maduro regime. Thus, similarly to the Emtrasur Cargo Boeing 747 seized two weeks ago, Argentine companies and authorities fear sanctions or reprisals from the Control Office. of Foreign Assets (OFAC) for doing business with and/or servicing any company, aircraft, or person sanctioned by the United States Department of the Treasury (USDT), which could be characterized as a sanctions violation.

After prohibiting Boliviana de Aviación (BoA) from transporting passengers from the state-owned and Venezuelan-flagged airline Conviasa between Santa Cruz de la Sierra and Buenos Aires, Argentina now prevents Cubana de Aviación from flying to Ezeiza/EZE International Airport with a Boeing 737-300 leased from the also Venezuelan Aerolineas Estelar.

Given the lack of active aircraft in the fleet, about four weeks ago, Cubana de Aviación decided to resort to Estrelar to rent (wet-lease) a Boeing 737 to carry out its flights during the summer season between the José Martí International Airport (HAV ) and Buenos Aires with technical stopovers in Caracas and Santa Cruz de la Sierra, due to the fact that the autonomy of the Boeing 737-300 does not allow connecting both cities directly (non-stop).

Cubana de Aviación has canceled flights last week as a result of the ban, accommodating affected passengers in hotels, while seeking a solution to the problem. Likewise, around 200 Venezuelans have also been stranded in Buenos Aires for a week because Conviasa suspended its flights from the Caracas/Maiquetía Simón Bolívar/CCS International Airport to the Argentine capital and has not yet found a way to transport them to their final destination.

EEUU multaría aéreas por cancelaciones

AW | 2022 06 24 11:22 | GOVERNMET / AIRLINES

US would fine airlines for cancellations

Government threatens to fine airlines for flight cancellations

Thousands of flight cancellations were recorded last weekend for which the United States Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, threatened to apply sanctions to airlines on behalf of consumers. «That’s what’s happening to a lot of people, and that’s exactly why we’re paying close attention to what can be done and how to make sure airlines are complying», said Pete Buttigieg.

For their part, the airlines have stated that the delays and cancellations are due to different reasons, among them is the shortage of personnel, in addition to weather conditions. However, Transportation will evaluate how airlines handle the increase in travel on July 4, 2022 before the Federal Government takes any action. “Now we are going to see how those requirements are measured”, said Pete Buttigieg.

The pilots of Delta Air Lines manifested themselves through a letter on 06/16 where they claimed to be flying a “record amount of overtime due to cancellations. At current rates, by this fall, our pilots will have flown more overtime in 2022 than in all of 2018 and 2019 combined, our busiest years to date. We empathize and share your frustration with the delays, cancellations and disrupted travel plans you have experienced. We agree; it is unacceptable”, says the statement from the flight crew.

Delays and cancellations for Saturday 06/18, according to FlightAware, were 6,462 flights to and from the United States that were delayed and 860 that were cancelled. On Sunday 06/19 until 02:00 pm, 2,318 flights had been delayed and 827 canceled, according to a Travel Pulse reporter. The Secretary of Transportation tweeted last week that it was meeting with airline leaders «to focus on how they can ensure people get where they need to be and support their operations with responsive customer service», Likewise, he said that he pressed to improve customer service when there are changes in flights.

Aerolíneas atraviesan falta personal

AW | 2022 06 23 13:18 | AIR TRAFFIC / AIRLINES

Airlines experiencing personnel shortage

Airlines in the world in crisis due to lack of personnel

Airlines around the world continue to find it increasingly difficult to project their service networks to meet the demand of thousands of flights that have been canceled or delayed around the world, in a crisis that threatens to extend into the northern summer holidays. Around more than 40,000 flights canceled or delayed in the world between June 17 and 19, 2022 have been affected by the growing demand for traffic that is developing.

Among the factors that have caused the recent cancellation of trips by airlines are the lack of personnel, especially in specialized positions such as pilots, calls for strikes and bad weather. The situation in the United States, Europe and the world present a diagnosis that more than patience will be needed when boarding a flight.

After the Covid-19 pandemic, many airlines in the world cut jobs, and now they are having trouble recovering. UK airlines, for example, claim to have cut close to 30,000 jobs since the start of the pandemic, which has conglomerated the country’s airlines. The same thing happens in the United States and experts point out that airlines have not been able to replace pilots who resigned, retired or were fired fast enough. Even the US Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, has met with airline executives to try to find a solution to this growing problem, so that it does not last until the summer, when the demand for air travel is expected to rise. the holidays.

AW-Jet & Cluod

Added to these pressures will be the discontent of airline industry workers, who have announced protests in several countries over the working conditions they face. A clear example is what is happening in the airline Ryanair, whose unions in five countries called the company’s employees to strike next weekend. In Spain, France, Belgium, Portugal and Italy, flight attendants demand respect for labor law and an increase in wages from the Irish company, which will probably register a higher activity this summer than in 2019.

On Sunday 06/19, the Ryanair pilots decided to join the flight attendants and urged them to stop working as of Friday 06/24. The staff of the national company Brussels Airlines, a subsidiary of Lufthansa Airlines, will strike from Thursday 06/23 for three days.

Low-cost carriers, especially Ryanair, have seen a dramatic uptick in activity since the suspension of anti-Covid restrictions. With the rapid resumption of traffic, many airlines have had to cancel flights due to lack of staff, such as EasyJet.

IATA Annual Summit 2022

On Tuesday 2/06, the world’s airlines concluded an annual three-day summit in Doha, Kingdom of Qatar, committing themselves to overcome operational problems. The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which groups almost 300 airlines, tried to relativize the furor caused by the recent airport and vacation chaos. IATA Director General Willie Walsh downplayed the problems and said the industry will be able to find a way. The airline sector expects to reduce losses in 2022 but has raised its forecasts due to the rapid recovery.

Some airlines may have to adjust their capacity plans to deal with staff shortages, but not all carriers or airports are facing the chaos recently seen in Europe.

JAL & Programa SpaceJet

AW | 2022 06 22 14:58 | INDUSTRY / AIRLINES

Reemplazo flota regional crea incertidumbre Programa MRJ

JAL & SpaceJet Program

Regional fleet replacement creates uncertainty MRJ Program

Mitsubishi_logo.svg

Japan Airlines (JAL)’s decision to replace the Embraer E170/E190 may create uncertainty for the Mitsubishi SpaceJet program. Japan Airlines plans to decide in the next twenty-four months on the replacement aircraft for its aging first-generation Embraer E1-Jet regional jets, apparently skipping the Mitsubishi SpaceJet M90 as an option.

Ross Leggett, Head of Route Marketing, International Relations and Alliances at JAL Airlines, said on the sidelines of the IATA Annual General Meeting in Doha, Kingdom of Qatar, that a decision will be made in 2023-2024. For the replacement of the regional plane, Embraer is considering the Airbus A220 and the Embraer E2-Jet. JAL has increased domestic flight capacities to 100% of pre-pandemic levels by May 2022, although demand is approximately 85%—95% of pre-pandemic levels.

JAL Airlines Group shows that its subsidiary J-Air owns Embraer E170 (18) and Embraer E190 (14). JAL’s first E170 was delivered in 2008, and the first E190 was delivered in 2016. The average age of E170s is 10.1 years and E190s are 4.7 years old. JAL announced in January 2015 that it had concluded an agreement with Mitsubishi Aircraft for the purchase of 32 Mitsubishi SpaceJet M90s, which were to be assigned to J-Air. It was understood that he ordered the M90s to replace the Embraer regional jets. But since the order was placed, there have been numerous delays to the M90 Program as the aircraft manufacturer worked to get the aircraft certified.

Smart Aviation Asia Pacific reported in October 2021 that Mitsubishi Aircraft told the US FAA in writing that it had decided to freeze the program for three years, from October 2020 to October 2023.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced in March 2008 that it had ordered 15 Mitsubishi SpaceJet M90 aircraft with options for 10 more. ANA has previously said the planes are for its regional subsidiary ANA Wings. At its annual meeting of shareholders on June 20, 2022, it confirms that it still has 15 Mitsubishi SpaceJet M90 on order. Since then, ANA Wings has phased out its Boeing 737-500s and now only operates twenty-four (24) De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Dash 8-400Q aircraft with deliveries beginning in 2010, and the fleet has an average age of 13.1 years.

Aerolíneas 100% capacidad 2023

AW | 2022 06 22 11:07 | AIRLINES

Aerolíneas Argentinas would reach 100% pre-pandemic capacity 2023

Aerolíneas Argentinas has announced the objective of restoring full capacity prior to the pandemic by 2023 once a backup in aircraft maintenance is cleared. The airline is seeing strong domestic demand in Argentina with operation at about 70% of its pre-pandemic capacity, Aerolíneas Argentinas CEO Pablo Ceriani said this week during IATA’s Annual General Assembly in Doha (DOH).

Pablo Ceriani said he expects the airline to restore 90% of its pre-pandemic capacity by the end of 2022. He explained that the airline is experiencing a bottleneck in heavy aircraft maintenance due to the pandemic, noting that approximately fifteen aircraft will need to complete that type of maintenance between the end of this year and the beginning of next. Aerolíneas Argentinas currently has fifty-eight aircraft in service. Domestic demand in Argentina remains strong, it is greater than supply. The executive believes that demand will continue to be strong this year, but it is not clear about 2023. «We will see what happens next year with the economy and a recession that could be happening in the world», said Pablo Ceriani.

EasyJet plc said it has entered into conditional agreements with Airbus, under which Airbus has agreed to supply fifty-six A320NEO family aircraft for delivery between 2026 and 2029, using purchase options and purchase rights under the existing contract with Airbus. In addition, the company is proposing to convert 18 A320NEO aircraft planned for delivery between 2024 and 2027 to 18 A321NEO aircraft deliveries. The company stated that the proposed purchase would substantially complete Airbus’ 2013 Agreement with Airbus, while also securing delivery slots between 2026 and 2029 to replace aircraft leaving the fleet.

The company has also entered into conditional agreements with CFM International to ensure that commitments made under the current engine supply agreement between the company and CFM cover aircraft delivered under the Airbus Amendment.

Johan Lundgren, EasyJet’s Chief Executive Officer, said: «The proposed purchase strengthens our orders with Airbus between FY2026 and FY2029, continuing to upgrade the company’s fleet, as older A319s and A320s are leaving the airline and the new A320 and A321 neo aircraft are coming in, providing benefits to easyJet through measurement, cost efficiencies and sustainability improvements. We believe this will support positive returns for the business and delivery of our strategic objectives».

JAL reemplazo para Boeing 767

AW | 2022 06 21 14:44 | AIRLINES

Japan Airlines busca reemplazo línea 767 y E170/E190

AW-JAL Airlines_Zinzin_Brand_Isologotype

JAL replacement for Boeing 767

Japan Airlines seeks replacement 767 line

Japan Airlines (JAL) plans to make a decision in one or two years on the replacement of its aging fleet of Boeing 767 and Embraer E170/E190 aircraft, a senior executive said on Tuesday 06/21. JAL is considering the Boeing 787 and Airbus A321NEO families under study as possible replacements for its 767 line fleet and for the E170/E190 regional models for Airbus A220 and Embraer Jet-E2, said Ross Leggett, Head of Route Marketing, International Relations and Airline alliances. «We have a fairly large 787 fleet, so if it’s an A321 that could be used quite well within Asia as well, we haven’t really looked at the full decision,» Ross Leggett said.

Japan Airlines updated fleet is of Boeing 767 (31), Embraer E-170 (18) and E-190 (14) in its fleet. Ross Leggett said the airline had restored domestic capacity to 100% of pre-pandemic levels by May 2022, although demand was running at around 85% to 95% of 2019 levels. In the international market, with China, South Korea and Taiwan effectively shut down and Japan capping daily entry numbers, capacity is about 65% of pre-pandemic levels, it added. Domestic demand at rival ANA Holdings is about 80% of pre-pandemic levels, said Junichiro Miyagawa, ANA Executive Vice President in charge of Alliances and International Affairs.

Disputa aviación UE-China

AW | 2022 06 21 14:43 | AIRLINES / AVIATION ORGANISMS

Aerolíneas europeas sufren frente a las chinas

Eurocontrol_Isologotype

EU-China aviation dispute

European airlines suffer against Chinese

The airlines of the People’s Republic of China take advantage of the dispute between Russia and the European Union over the invasion of Ukraine. This is recognized by the Director General of Eurocontrol, Eamonn Brennan, who warns of the indirect effect that the closure of Russian airspace is having on EU airlines.

Chinese airlines, exempt from restrictions, can fly over Russian airspace. The Europeans, on the other hand, are forced to make alternative routes, incurring more hours of flight and, therefore, a significant increase in fuel consumption, the price of which has skyrocketed due to the war. “Every day, thirty or forty Chinese planes fly over the Russian Federation, land at airports in the European Union, pick up cargo and fly back, while an airline like Lufthansa cannot. Neither does Air France. They basically have a penalty of two or two and a half hours that Chinese aircraft do not have”, explains Eamonn Brennan.

The Director General of Eurocontrol regrets that “with the sanctions, everyone suffers. From a practical point of view, yes, it has a big effect on European airlines; yes, European air traffic changes; and yes, it increases all prices. But the reality is that there has to be solidarity with Ukraine”, says the Director of Eurocontrol.

Deuda venezolana a Aerolíneas

AW | 2022 06 18 12:09 | AIRLINES / AIRLINES ALLIANCE / GOVERNMENT

Gobierno Venezuela adeuda US$ 1,3 millones a Aerolíneas

Venezuelan debt to Aerolíneas

Government Venezuela owes US$ 1.3 million to Aerolíneas

The Venezuelan state airline, Conviasa, owes US$ 1.3 million to Aerolíneas Argentinas, informed company sources. The Venezuelan Consortium of Aeronautical Industries and Air Services (Conviasa), which manages its cargo subsidiary Empresa de Transporte del Sur SA (Emtrasur), maintained a codeshare agreement with the airline for ten years, which was finally suspended in 2019, precisely due to the non-payment of the debt accumulated by the destination operation as a whole.

The agreement between the Venezuelan airline Conviasa and Aerolíneas Argentinas was signed in 2009, at the height of relations between Kirchnerism and Chavismo. The Shared Code agreement was initially signed in March 2009, by the then head of Aerolíneas Argentinas, Julio Alak, and his Venezuelan counterpart Noris Negrón Rangel, according to official documents. The official objective was to strengthen cooperation ties between the two countries, which is why the joint operation of the Caracas—Buenos Aires—Caracas routes was agreed upon. Months later, on the occasion of Hugo’s visit to Chávez in December 2009 during the term of Cristina Kirchner, the Bilateral Air Transport Agreement between Argentina and Venezuela was endorsed, and the joint operation of other destinations in Latin America was included, the Caribbean, Miami, New York, Los Angeles, South Africa and Australia, to which each of the companies flew on its own routes. The then Argentine ambassador to Venezuela Alicia Castro celebrated that «there was no obstacle for both flag carriers to share the benefits of that business, which would allow them to compete in better conditions with foreign private airlines». The agreement was exclusive for the two state airlines and excluded other private companies such as Argentina’s Andes or Venezuela’s Estelar Latinoamericana, which sought to fly to destinations in both countries, and could only do so with non-scheduled flights.

The agreement formally lasted almost a decade, but it generated a debt of US$ 1.3 million to Aerolíneas Argentinas. For this reason, the then President of the airline Mario Dell’Acqua suspended the agreement in August 2019 due to non-compliance by Conviasa. Conviasa operated that route until May 2017 and Aerolíneas Argentinas, until July 2017. From the current management of Aerolíneas Argentinas they ensured that the debt could never be collected, almost three years after suspending the agreement between the companies. Although they reported that there were claims, they still have not received the pending payments.
