Indian airlines to start resumption of domestic flights

The Government of India has authorized airlines to resume domestic flights for next week, exactly two months after the blocking of air navigation. The entire fleet of planes has been grounded after the health crisis has forced most countries to park flights. Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks to gradually restart economic activity even as Coronavirus infections in India jump at a higher rate in Asia. According to information from Johns Hopkins University, infections in the South Asian nation of 1.3 billion people were at 106,886, including 3,303 deaths, as of Wednesday.

Airlines around the world have struggled to stay in business, with some closing as travel restrictions to contain the spread of the virus dried up cash flows.

The order to ban local flights, which came into effect on March 25, 2020, a few days after banning international operations, landed 650 planes in the country. «National civil aviation operations will resume in a calibrated manner from Monday, May 25, 2020. All airports and airlines are being informed to be ready for operations from May 25», said the Minister of Civil Aviation, Hardeep Singh Puri. In addition, the Ministry of Aviation will issue standard guidelines on the movement of passengers separately.

Indian market

India is home to some of the major Airbus and Boeing customers, carriers in the region have ordered more than 1,000 aircraft in recent years, and its emerging middle class has made the country one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world. But competition has intensified so much in recent years that Jet Airways India Ltd., once the nation’s largest operator, closed operations in April 2019.

IndiGo of the InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. group, Asia’s largest budget airline by market value, is the main customer for Airbus A320NEO aircraft, while SpiceJet Ltd. is one of the main customers for Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Singapore Airlines Ltd. and AirAsia Group Bhd. They also compete in the market with local companies, along with state-owned Air India Ltd. and Go Airlines India Ltd. AW-Icon Paragraph-02

Aerolíneas y el efecto dominó

AW-Wk-Boeing 737-800_South_African_Airways_Aeropuerto_Internacional_OR_Tambo_JohannesburgAW | 2020 05 17 12:15 | AIRLINES MARKET / GOVERNMENT

Thai Airways International announces flight adjustments and check ...Airlines and the domino effect

Airlines face business continuity challenges

Most of the countries are slowly emerging from the turmoil in the face of the global health crisis, but they continue to face the serious economic crisis that this situation leaves ahead for many airlines that continue to seek help from the States in order to survive.

The Coronavirus pandemic has rocked many major industries worldwide. The world aviation industry is one of the most affected, with its serious and expansive consequences that unfold every day. Airlines now face billions of dollars in losses, and many seek state aid to avoid being punished for good. These major challenges facing airlines pose colossal problems for states that attempt to provide financial aid, while other states do not authorize such financial assistance approvals.

In Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government will work with Air Canada and the rest of the air travel sector amid the Coronavirus pandemic, but did not offer details on what the potential support would look like. His comments came a day after Canada’s largest airline revealed that it was preparing to cut its workforce by at least half. Air Canada announced on Friday 15/05 that it plans to fire some 20,000 employees representing 50-60% of the workforce due to the devastation the pandemic has brought to its business. «COVID-19 has forced us to reduce our hours by 95 percent and, based on all the indicators we have, our normal traffic levels will not return anytime soon. Our current workforce supports an operation that carries 51 million customers a year with 1,500 daily flights and 258 aircraft. With current realities, this is simply not sustainable in the future», the company wrote in a statement. Travel restrictions in place to limit the spread of COVID-19 in Canada and the world have paved the way for a gloomy boreal summer for the country’s travel and tourism industry.

According to an internal newsletter for members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the union is in talks with the company about the continuation of the emergency wage subsidy, which lasted until the end of August 2020. Air Canada has not disclosed whether it planned to access the Ottawa Bridge Loan Program, which comes with a number of conditions including requiring applicants to share their climate action plans and sustainability goals.

For African airlines, the global crisis comes at an overly deteriorated time, with several major airlines struggling to stay on the air. The industry is now facing a severe liquidity crisis and some 3 million pending jobs.

According to industry regulators, Air Mauritius has entered voluntary administration, South Africa Airways has entered commercial rescue with several other distressed carriers placing their personnel on unpaid leave. More airlines also risk the same destination in the absence of urgent financial aid. But aviation in Africa supports 6.2 million jobs and contributes $ 56 billion in GDP; therefore, sector failure is not an option.

The Thai political opposition is embarrassing Thai Airways International (THAI) to give government aid to the airline. When Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said Thai Airways will have one last chance to turn around, calling it a life and death matter for the company and its employees, he was serious «I gave him five years to fix the problems, but it has not been successful yet», he said after a cabinet meeting in early May 2020. If it comes to losses, Thai Airways International must present a rehabilitation plan before the end of the month if it wants to the government to consider a rescue package. Transportation Minister Saksayam Chidchob has set the deadline amid growing public sentiment against a state-backed loan for the national carrier, which was already facing financial problems before the Coronavirus outbreak, having reported losses since 2017. China cancelaría órdenes aeronaves

Boeing Company Opens New Chinese Factory Amid U.S.-Chinese Trade WarAW | 2020 05 16 19:36 | INDUSTRY / GOVERNMENT

AW-Icon Paragraph-01

Nuevo varapalo a Boeing en ChinaChina to cancel aircraft orders

Chinese government threatens to cancel all commercial aircraft orders

AW-7370078The Sino-American trade war is advancing and increasing pressure on American companies. The Chinese newspaper Global Times said the Chinese Government could cancel a series of formalized orders and agreements with the American industry, including The Boeing Company, as a way to pressure the White House in the current trade war between the two countries.

The newspaper, which is the English version of the People’s Daily of the Chinese Communist Party, is used as a spokesperson for the Chinese government, commenting on international problems from a nationalist perspective. The topics covered by the periodical are an example of Beijing’s plans, which raised market concerns about the future of Boeing’s orders.

The intention of the Chinese Government is to pressure the White House, through tension in the international market, to avoid a probable North American blockade of shipments of semiconductors (processor) to the Huawei company, which is the center of a commercial and strategic dispute. between the United States and China.

President Xi Jinping’s government may list companies in the United States on a list of unreliable entities, initiating unilateral investigations and imposing restrictions on companies, especially Apple, Cisco System, and Boeing. In the case of the aerospace giant, the proposal is to cancel all orders for commercial aircraft by Chinese airlines. «To retaliate against Huawei’s trade ban in the United States, China could void all of its current orders with Boeing, even if that means some Chinese companies have to pay liquidated damages», the newspaper wrote.

In April 2020, the China Development Bank Financial Leasing canceled an order for 29 Boeing 737 MAXs, which increased pressure on Boeing’s order book. In addition, China is working on the certification of the Comac 919, which directly competes with the 737 MAX family. Although the strategy is not to conquer the international market, just to satisfy Chinese domestic demand, the sales potential is greater than 3,000 aircraft, increasing Boeing’s difficulty in continuing to conquer the Chinese market.

Crossing accusations

The situation is relatively comfortable for China, within the current scenario of lower demand for air travel, while representing a strong impact for Boeing, which accumulates problems ranging from the recertification of the 737 MAX to the crisis caused by the new coronavirus, which ironically originated in China. The trade war advances in a series of mutual charges. The United States Department of Commerce intends to restrict Huawei’s access to advanced semiconductor technologies. The Chinese telecommunications giant is one of the leaders in the application and implementation of 5G technology in the world, but the White House accuses the company of spying on Western companies and citizens, among others, arguing that transparency in its terms of usage is rather vague. Additionally, Huawei has disputed several global contracts for fifth-generation internet technology, including in Brazil. China, for its part, says that Washington continues to criticize the country for the coronavirus outbreak and that it has been illegally encouraging American companies to reestablish their supply chains in the United States. Argentina flexibilizaría retorno aviación

aeroparque hashtag on TwitterAW | 2020 05 16 13:51 | AIRLINES MARKET / GOVERNMENT

AW-Icon Paragraph-01

AW-700433877Argentina would make aviation return more flexible

Argentina could relax travel ban ahead of time

The Government of the Argentine Republic has prohibited air travel until September 1, 2020, as preventive measures due to the Coronavirus health crisis. As economies falter and sanitary measures vary from place to place, he has suggested the possibility of being able to relax those restrictions prematurely, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said on Friday 15/05.

Argentina unreasonably surprised airlines recently by including the sale of tickets within the travel ban, one of the strictest in the world. This measure has left Argentines in isolation longer than almost any other country and has complicated the efforts of the country’s airlines to survive for several more months without income.

IATA Vice President for the Americas, Peter Cerda, said at a conference that Argentina’s Minister of Transport agreed to «speak to the Minister of Health to see what steps can be taken to bring these dates forward. The request is to move the date from September 1 to, if possible, the beginning of July 2020, that is what we ask for», said Peter Cerda, noting that there is no guarantee that the dates will change. added that the meeting held with the government has been very productive.

A source from Argentina’s transport ministry admitted that the adjustment of the ban is being discussed, but did not confirm whether the early July date is being considered. «IATA is asking for a date change. We only listen and dialogue, and that decision is based on sanitary requirements. All issues are being reviewed, depending on the conditions that arise from the Ministry of Health», noted from the Government of Argentina. AW-Icon Paragraph-02

Holanda exige a aerolíneas reembolso

A Guide to Airports in the NetherlandsAW | 2020 05 15 12:49 | GOVERNMENT / AIRLINES

AW-Schiphol AirportDutch government demands airlines reimbursement

The Government of the Netherlands requests airlines to refund tickets

The Government of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands has changed its tone on air ticket refunds and has now been asking airlines and tour companies to return their cash to customers if they request it, confirmed on Thursday 14/05 to MPs Transport Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen. The change in direction follows a letter sent to twelve European Union (EU) countries by the European Commission (EC) reminding them that under Union law, passengers are entitled to a refund instead of a coupon. Additionally, the commission has put together a list of recommendations to make coupons more attractive to consumers.

Van Nieuwenhuizen told parliamentarians in his report that he is still asking passengers to accept the coupons, as long as this does not cause them financial problems, a position described earlier this week by the commission’s Vice-chair, Margrethe Vestager. To this end, the commission suggests that the coupons be protected against the bankruptcy of the airline, be valid for a minimum of 12 months and be refundable after a maximum of one year, if not redeemed. They must also give passengers enough flexibility, allow them to travel in the same conditions, and be transferable.

Van Nieuwenhuizen has expressed in April 2020 that he had decided to turn a blind eye to airlines that break the rules to protect his financial position. In response to the new position of the Dutch Government, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has announced an upgrade of coupons for canceled flights that will be issued at 115% of the original value if people choose these instead of a refund. DOT flexibiliza gastos aeroportuarios

DOT-FAA_Headquarters_by_Matthew_BisanzAW | 2020 05 13 14:57 | GOVERNMENT / AIRLINES

AW-Icon Paragraph-01

capitol-wideDOT eases airport expenses

DOT facilitates airport service mandates for airlines in distress

DOT_Isologotype_01The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) is easing some requirements that it imposed on airlines that received aid under costs due to the current health crisis of the Coronavirus pandemic, these include the mandates for the provision of airport services. About seventeen large and small airlines requested exemptions from that requirement in the law (PL 116-136), forcing DOT to weigh on requests at hundreds of destinations, including many smaller airports or those near other large metropolitan airports. The roughly US$ 2 trillion expense bill required aid airlines to continue some level of service to the same airports that served before the pandemic but closed air travel.

Airlines have often been forced to send nearly empty flights to meet those government-mandated service obligations under the CARES Act, and have argued that maintaining flights puts them at greater financial risk. On Tuesday 12/05, the Department of Transportation said it would allow airlines to create a prioritized list of destinations to stop providing services. DOT would have the right to reject an application if it meant that the affected airport would no longer receive any air service. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, for example, were allowed to choose 11 airports where they could stop service, as long as another airline continues to offer flights to those destinations. DOT requested airlines to submit their waiver request list by 5 p.m. dated May 18, 2020. «For air operators this could be a relief to reduce their service obligations, thus reducing the financial burden on operators and providing flexibility to manage operations and staffing in their networks», wrote DOT. in a statement announcing the new policy.

In addition, it has communicated that the airports will continue to receive services from at least one covered airline. DOT has a long history of requiring at least a minimum level of service to airports. The Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 included a provision that ensured that small communities served by airlines prior to deregulation continued to receive a certain level of service.

Joel Bacon, Executive Vice President of Government and Public Affairs for the American Association of Airport Executives, said «There is little point in flying near-empty planes, but that your organization is closely watching the rule. There are definitely concerns about maintaining options. viable air services in the short term, but an acknowledgment that airlines need to survive the immediate crisis in order to provide services in the future. In the long term, it is clear that protecting air service and connectivity to the system will be a challenge that all we will have to face».

Refunds

The Department also issued a notice Tuesday, May 12, for the second time, urging airlines to reimburse for services modified or canceled due to the pandemic. The three-page note reiterated that passengers who choose not to travel for security reasons are generally not entitled to a refund or a travel voucher for future use by the airline. That orientation came after Senator Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., Complained at a hearing in the Senate of Commerce, Science and Transportation last week that airlines were not reimbursing tickets to passengers concerned about their health. , and after DOT received some 25,000 air service complaints and inquiries in March and April 2020, compared to the 1,500 complaints it receives in a typical month.
