Israel nuevo rescate financiero

AW | 2021 11 22 05:20 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

Israel ofrece US$ 44 millones a aerolíneas en nuevo rescate

Israel will provide new financial rescue

Israel offers US$ 44 million to airlines in new rescue

Israel’s strict border restrictions continue to weigh on the country’s airlines. The government understands this, and is offering another helping hand as the Delta strain takes another toll. Members of the Israeli cabinet approved an additional bailout plan for airlines further harmed by the spread of the Delta strain of Coronavirus, the finance and transport ministries said in a joint statement on Sunday 11/21. Total state aid would not exceed the US$ 44 million for all carriers in Israel and would come in the form of three-year bonds that accrue no interest. Transport Minister Merav Michaeli said that «the plan balances the responsibilities of the government with those of the controlling shareholders of the airlines. It benefits the Israeli public first and ensures the stability of the companies and their employees».

El Al Israel Airlines, Arkia and Israir, have been hit hard during the COVID-19 pandemic with the country’s borders largely closed to foreign tourists since March 2020. Since early November, tourists who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 can enter the country within six months after their last dose. El Al, who is in talks to buy Israir, requested US$ 100 million from the Government in September 2021 as compensation for its strict travel policies. The airline has reported losses for three years and accumulated debt to renew its fleet. It laid off 1,900 employees, nearly a third of its staff, as part of a government-ordered recovery plan to receive a US$ 210 million aid package in early 2021, and reduced its fleet to 29 from 45. Another Publicly traded airline will have the option to convert a bond into state-assigned shares upon maturity. In that case, the State would not have more than 24% of the capital of an airline and would not have voting rights.

Crisis en Bielorrusia

AW | 2021 11 19 07:55 | AIRLINES / AIR TRAFFIC / GOVERNMENT

Crisis in Belarus

Airlines under pressure of sanctions

AW-7000435

Both Belarusian and foreign airlines could face penalties involving fines for the transport of migrants to Belarus. Pressure from Brussels has quickly given way to transporting migrants between countries. The European Union (EU) has introduced new sanctions 48 hours ago as a result of the border crisis between Poland and Belarus.

A total of 600 planes from Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey have landed in Minsk since the beginning of July. Most of these flights were operated by the Belarusian state airline Belavia. In addition, the EU Commission also held intensive discussions with a dozen airlines offering flights to Minsk. Among them are Flydubai, Turkish Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Air Arabiya, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, MEA, Oman Air, Iraqi Airways and Egypt Air. The Lebanese Ministry of Transport declared on Wednesday 11/17 evening that it would only allow its own citizens with valid visas or foreign nationals with permanent residence permits to fly to Belarus. It was followed by a whole host of other airlines and aviation authorities who have yielded to pressure from Brussels in recent days. The Vice-President of the Commission, Margaritis Schinas, and the European Union Commissioner for Transport, Adina Vălean, also had close exchanges with international aviation organizations such as IATA or the Arab Air Carriers Organization.

Negotiations in the European Commission were not long in coming into effect. Turkish Airlines had already announced last week that it would stop carrying passengers from Iraq, Syria or Yemen to Belarus. Most of the other airlines also agreed to suspend the sale of one-way tickets to Minsk for migrants from the Middle East or to cancel their flights to Belarus altogether. According to independent aviation expert Heinrich Großbongardt, all these airlines probably would not have actively promoted these flights on their own initiative. However, they could have detected the irregularities that were emerging earlier and sounded the alarm. On the other hand, the economic situation of many airlines is very tense due to the global effects of the coronavirus pandemic. «Some of them turned a blind eye to this business», suspects the aviation expert.

The EU is threatening to withdraw overflight and landing rights from airlines whose involvement in the transport of migrants has been demonstrated. The threat alone was enough to make the airlines give in. «Europe is a huge aviation market, and airlines are especially vulnerable there. If the EU says now: we are not going to give them more landing rights, airlines have to ask themselves: where is our core business really?», said Heinrich Großbongardt.

Even airlines that do not fly to Europe could come under indirect pressure. Because Brussels also has the lever of air transport agreements, and these no longer only affect individual airlines. They are agreed between the EU or individual Member States and third countries. «These agreements regulate the organization of air traffic between states. Who can fly where? Who can carry passengers or cargo? Who can make a stopover in the EU?» The EU could suspend or terminate these agreements in the event of serious violations. «This would then affect all airlines in a country», Heinrich Großbongardt. European airspace is already closed to Belarusian aircraft, and some EU member states have already canceled their bilateral air services agreements with Belarus. Even EU planes can no longer cross Belarusian airspace for long-haul flights, which means that the Minsk regime can no longer charge overflight fees.

Aircraft confiscation

Another way the EU is putting pressure on airlines is by leasing planes. Nine of the ten largest leasing companies are based in Ireland, the tenth is from Denmark. To save costs, many airlines lease a large part of their fleet to these companies instead of buying the planes. Only Belarusian Belavia has leased 17 of its 30 planes to Irish companies. These leases will be terminated as soon as the EU has completed its new round of sanctions against Belarus, Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney announced earlier this week. If the aircraft are not returned voluntarily, they will be confiscated as soon as they land at a foreign airport. In that case, Belavia would possibly face a total collapse of its flight operations. Probably also out of fear of this scenario, the Belarusian airline has now given in: as of this Friday 11/19, the airline announced that Syrian, Iraqi or Yemeni citizens would also be prohibited from accessing their planes. In total, the possible penalties are enough to stop human trafficking into Belarus. «In the coming weeks, we will see a significant decrease in these flights to Minsk», says Heinrich Großbongardt.

Justicia prohíbe cobro equipaje mano

AW | 2021 11 18 11:18 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

Justice prohibits the collection of hand luggage

Airlines cannot charge for carry-on luggage

AW-Ryanair_Southend Airport

The Justice of Spain has ruled in favor of a passenger who denounced the Irish budget airline Ryanair for not allowing him to board due to his refusal to pay a supplement for hand luggage. The judge has agreed with the passenger who knew in advance that he had to pay the supplement for the suitcase. A magistrate from a Palma de Mayorca court dictates a ruling that could set a precedent for European aviation, prompting airlines to withdraw from charging passengers for hand luggage on board aircraft.

The court ruling comes after the complaint of a traveler who Ryanair did not allow him to board for refusing to pay the £ 20 pounds that he required to be able to fly with a suitcase in the cabin. Although his ticket did not include hand luggage and, according to the low cost argument, the client knew in advance that he had to pay a supplement if he wanted to take it, justice has agreed with him. The magistrate argues that boarding cannot be denied unless there are health or safety reasons that justify it, so she determines that the company exercised a situation of superiority over the passenger. She also recalls that European regulations oblige airlines to transport hand luggage without any additional cost over the price of the ticket. For all this, she has ordered Ryanair to pay € 387 Euros to the affected customer.

Belavia bloquea pax desde Turquía

AW | 2021 11 12 07:15 | AIRLINES ROUTES / GOVERNMENT

Belavia no admite iraquíes, sirios y yemeníes procedentes Turquía

Belavia_logo.svg

Belavia blocks pax from Turkey

Belavia not admitting Iraqis, Syrians and Yemenis on flights Turkey

The Belarusian state airline Belavia announced this 11/11 that it will stop accepting citizens of Iraq, Syria and Yemen on flights from Turkey to Belarus, thus closing one of the routes used by migrants to reach Minsk and from there to the border with the European Union (EU). «By virtue of the decision of the competent authorities of Turkey, from today the citizens of Iraq, Syria and Yemen will not be admitted on flights between Turkey and Belarus», the company said in a brief statement on its corporate page.

This step comes in the midst of the migration crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border, where some 2,000 migrants from the Middle East, particularly from those three countries, have gathered since Monday 08/11 to try to cross into the EU. The European Union is preparing new sanctions against Belarus for the hybrid war it is waging with the transport of migrants to the community border to, according to them, destabilize the European Union. The works in Brussels include exploring not only new restrictive measures against Belavia, but also against third-country airlines that are actively involved in human trafficking.

Both Turkish Airlines and Aeroflot Russian Airlines have denied any involvement in the transport of undocumented migrants to Belarus. Turkish Airlines operates ten flights a week to Minsk, a number similar to that of Belavia. The Belarusian state airline denied in late October that it was bringing irregular migrants to the EU, while Alexandr Lukashenko’s government has said they enter Belarus legally, with visas that activists say are organized from Minsk.

On Wednesday November 10, the Belarusian lawyer Aliona Chejovich, an immigration expert, did not hesitate in statements to Efe that it was the Belarusian regime that organized the flow of illegal immigrants in recent months to the European Community. «The authorities were the ones who launched an advertising campaign several months ago in which Belarus was listed as the transit country to the EU», she commented from Minsk. In this campaign, according to Aliona Chejovich, the tourist agencies and tour operators that depend on the presidential administration would participate and benefit. The activist herself spoke with several immigrants who in the last two weeks tried unsuccessfully to cross the border with the EU. «They are mostly Kurds from Iraq, but there are also Syrians and Iranians. They told us that they paid, granted them a tourist visa, booked a hotel room or an apartment in Minsk, and tried to cross into Europe through the forest», Aliona Chejovich recounted.

Since last spring, attempts at illegal entry into Latvia, Lithuania and Poland from Belarus have multiplied. That’s after Alexandr Lukashenko openly declared that he will stop preventing the arrival of undocumented migrants to the EU in response to sanctions imposed by the West for the fraudulent 2020 presidential elections, the subsequent crackdown and the crash landing of a European flight in May to arrest a dissident.

Problemas salariales ex-pilotos LIAT

AW | 2021 11 11 12:37 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

Mantienen presión sobre gobiernos accionistas abono a ex-pilotos

LIAT-Logo-No-tagline

Salary problems ex-LIAT pilots

They maintain pressure on shareholder governments to pay ex-pilots

AW-Liat Airlines_ATR72-600

The Pilots Union of the regional airline LIAT Airlines, on Tuesday 11/09 asked its shareholder governments to help reach an agreement regarding the pending compensation owed to the former pilots of the airline. Patterson Thompson, President of the Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association (LIALPA), has delivered the claim on Antigua Island, recognizing that while the Coronavirus pandemic had complicated matters, shareholder governments should commit to comply. with pending payments to former employees. He said the governments of Barbados, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica should join the efforts undertaken by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, to address the situation. Patterson Thompson stated, «If you don’t want to join Mr. Gaston Browne’s efforts, what can you do for us there, you and Prime Minister (Dr. Ralph) Gonsalves (of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines)? And that’s the We talked about slavery, we go back 400 years, but this happened in 2020. Charity starts at home, let’s come together as a Caribbean group and solve the problem. If you tell me I could pay the money in two or three years, I could probably live with that But they only cut off our knees, our ankles, we serve the country, all of us. Not only the inhabitants of Baja California, not only those of Antigua, [but] there were people from Granada, Vincentians, Saint Lucians, Kittitians, Trinidadians, Guyanese».

In October 2021, Prime Minister Gaston Browne called on regional unions to reconsider his positions on the latest offer made to laid off airline workers. He expressed that what is required is the cooperation of the unions, noting that «some union leaders are making unreasonable demands, making demands in which they have no legal basis to make. As I have told the other unions, if they really think that they are owed 100 percent of their severance pay and staff obligations, go to court and prove it. If they can’t prove it, then governments are giving you a compassionate pay, take it and run». The airline had laid off about 90 percent of its staff last year as part of a restructuring exercise and has resumed operations on a much smaller scale.

Dominica-based Waterfront and Allied Workers Union (WAWU) President Donald Rolle said regional unions are united in pursuing the millions of dollars owed to workers and have rejected the latest offer from shareholder governments. «The offer on the table is to pay LIAT workers 50 percent of their layoff salary and there is a component that involves compensation through the issuance of land and bonds. But unions across the Caribbean have rejected that in in its entirety, but we are in negotiations with the governments. We have a position and as it is now, we are at opposite ends of the table», Donald Rolle. But another LIALPA executive member, Arian Blanchard, who also said that while an offer has been made to the workers, it is not in writing. «We are a very responsible and attentive executive. We are exploring all avenues to get the details that we needed to clarify in the proposal and we did it as the president would have mentioned in a meeting with Prime Minister Browne and he clarified the details. But we cannot go back. to our members and say what the prime minister said. That’s rumor. We have to have it in the proposal so that we can take it back to our members, at which point the members will make their decision to accept the offer. But we have to have that document and this is where we are right now». He warned of the possibility of pilots and engineers «seeking employment abroad if the matter is not resolved soon. I talk to many members all the time. Mentally it is exhausting because most people would be responsible for their families and in some cases There are people who both breadwinners were employed by LIAT», argues Arian Blanchard.

Patterson Thompson rejected the suggestion that the airline’s pilots should take some of the blame for the airline’s troubles, saying that management had made some irresponsible decisions. «LIAT has made mistakes over and over and over again over a period of time», he said, recalling that the association had warned them not to withdraw from a certain route, which they subsequently ignored. “And then when we got back to St. Thomas three days a week, the flights (were) three-quarters [full]. The pilots did not do that. We’re sick of these folks running on nonsense that has been fed there. The biggest problem with LIAT is that there was always political interference in the airline and it was never allowed to function as an airline business».

The airline is owned by the governments of Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). Last year, Gaston Browne said a decision had been made that would allow Barbados and SVG to hand over their shares in LIAT Airlines to Antigua and Barbuda for EC$ 1 East Caribbean Dollar. Gaston Browne said that the LIAT, under management, had returned an operating profit for the months of July and August, suggesting that a more agile and efficient LIAT may be profitable.

Dispute over sanctions against Aeroflot

Russia to consider banning western flights

The Government of the Russian Federation announced this Thursday 11/11 that if sanctions are imposed on the Russian airline Aeroflot Russian Airlines, Moscow could consider prohibiting the passage of Western airlines over Russian territory, said Vladimir Dzhabarov, the First Deputy Director of the Committee on International Affairs of the Russian Upper House.

On Wednesday 11/10 the European Union was discussing sanctions against Aeroflot and Turkish Airlines for their alleged involvement in bringing illegal immigrants to Belarus. «Aeroflot has nothing to do with it. They are trying to bite Russia at any cost. If sanctions are imposed on Aeroflot, Russia may consider banning the flights of Western airlines over the territory of our country», Vladimir Dzhabarov said. If the West imposes sanctions on Aeroflot, Russia will respond with «similar sanctions against its companies, which are highly dependent on Russia due to their geographic location», the lead lawmaker warned.

Boeing prepara acuerdo ET-302

AW | 2021 11 10 20:17 | AIR INVESTIGATION / AVIATION SAFETY / GOVERNMENT

Boeing prepares ET-302 agreement

Boeing prepares agreement with families accident Ethiopian 737 MAX
Aerospacial will seek to avoid judicial punitive damages

The Boeing Company and attorneys for the families of nearly all of the 157 people who died in the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET-302 of a Boeing 737-8 MAX in Ethiopia are about to announce a settlement that will end nearly all civil lawsuits against the aircraft manufacturer. For families scattered around the world, the agreement will provide a set compensation in the United States rather than letting African families rush into their home countries for probably much lower payments. For Boeing, it will limit the extent of the damage and the amount of additional investigations into the causes of the accident.

Attorneys for both parties are expected to file a motion as soon as this Wednesday 11/10 or Thursday 11/11 in Federal Court in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Only two of the families on flight ET 302 have not signed the proposed agreement at this time, which awaits greater responsibility for the company and its executives. However, it is legally uncertain how they can go after Boeing further. In the proposed settlement, known as the «Stipulation,» Boeing admits «liability for compensatory damages caused by accident ET-302», in which 157 people died in March 2019. No set amount of compensation is specified.

Stipulation Agreement

The settlement allows every family, including many from Ethiopia and Kenya, to seek compensatory damages in Illinois. Financial compensation in each individual case would be decided through mediation or, if necessary, in a jury trial. However, signing the stipulation explicitly eliminates the option to seek punitive damages against Boeing. The provision firmly closes the door to legal efforts seeking to uncover wrongdoing beyond those of the two Boeing pilots who were identified in the criminal case brought by the Justice Department. «No evidence or argument about punitive damages will properly be discovered or admitted», the stipulation says. A successful judgment for punitive damages would generally result in a much larger financial award and would also involve a legal discovery process that could require internal Boeing documents and statements from executives and other employees to explore the full scope of the company’s liability.

The State of Illinois, where Boeing is headquartered, is one of many jurisdictions that do not allow punitive damages in wrongful death cases. Washington State, where the 737 MAX was designed and built, is another identical case. Among the Boeing executives named on a list to be deposed in the civil ET-302 cases are CEO David Calhoun, the CEO at the time of the accidents, Dennis Muilenburg, and the former head of the Commercial Aircraft unit, Kevin McAllister.

Now those bowel movements are unlikely to happen. According to several people familiar with the details, Boeing’s lawyers threatened that if their stipulation was not accepted by the vast majority of plaintiffs, they would seek to move each case to the country or state of domicile of the individual victims. That would have deprived most families abroad of jury trials and legal discovery and would have secured much less compensation than American families.

Elizabeth Burch, a professor at the University of Georgia School of Law and an expert in mass tort cases and multidistrict litigation, who has spoken with one of the plaintiffs in the case, said the impending settlement with the families of the accident victims Ethiopian will almost clear the legal deck for Boeing. «Every time you have really egregious behavior that you don’t want to put in front of the jury, you’re going to settle on some basis. Certainly solving most cases is going to go a long way toward reassuring shareholders», said Elizabeth Burch.

ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES CEO TEWOLDE GEBREMARIAM ANALYZES THE WRECKAGE OF THE PLANE THAT CRASHED SHORTLY AFTER TAKING OFF FROM ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA, ON MARCH 10, 2019, KILLING EVERYONE ON BOARD.

Boeing concludes litigation

The CONSOLIDATED ET302 civil lawsuits are the latest large batch of pending litigation from the two Boeing 737 MAX accidents that killed a total of 346 people. All but four of the families of those killed in the earlier Lion Air flight JT-610 crash in Indonesia have now been established, and two of them are in mediation this week, according to people with knowledge of those cases. One of the Lion Air families that has yet to settle is that of 31-year-old Indian national captain Bhavye Suneja, who commanded flight JT-610. Last week, the Boeing board settled for US$ 237.5 million a lawsuit filed by pension funds representing major shareholders.

Boeing, fined

AW-700022

In January 2021, Boeing reached a deferred prosecution agreement with the Justice Department in the criminal case, paying a US$ 244 million fine. In that deferred prosecution agreement, Boeing admitted fraud in the way the MAX was certified and presented to airlines, so the admission of liability in the ET-302 stipulation is not a huge concession. Alan Morrison, associate dean at George Washington University School of Law in Washington, DC, another expert on mass tort cases, said corporate defendants generally require plaintiffs to waive any punitive damages claims as part of a settlement. «Whether we like it or not, it is reality. It is not unusual. Boeing is doing what it believes is in its own financial interest, long and short term. They want to end this. That is perfectly understandable. Having all these cases heard on Illinois certainly benefits non-American victims», Morrison said.

Although no family can be compelled to agree to the stipulation, Boeing’s requirement that it would take effect only if the majority of the plaintiffs signed put pressure on families to accept. Plaintiffs in developed Western nations put themselves in the position of having to consider the impact on grieving families in Africa if the deal failed and Africans were forced to seek compensation in their home countries.

Almost three years after the ET-302 accident, most were ready to end the litigation. Elizabeth Burch said it is «relatively routine, albeit troubling, for the defendant to ask the plaintiffs’ attorneys to settle through a blanket settlement. Their idea behind doing this is to try to create enormous pressure on the attorneys for the plaintiffs. plaintiffs, to try to twist the plaintiffs’ arms into making a settlement they might prefer not to take. What is particularly concerning in a situation like this is when you have such diverse interests. If the Ethiopian plaintiffs are going to have to go back and litigate in your home country and getting very little money there, so that’s a pretty significant difference between someone (in the United States) who would like to take their case to trial and see more discoveries take place. That’s a perpetual problem that comes up. in multidistrict litigation».

According to people with knowledge of the cases, the two families that have not signed the stipulation are those of Samya Rose Stumo from Massachusetts and a Kenyan couple, Jared Babu Mwazo and Mercy Ngami Ndivo, who left a baby. The legal options open to these families are unclear. Contacted by phone on Tuesday 11/09, Nadia Milleron, mother of Samya Rose Stumo, said she could not comment on the litigation. The Kenyan family could not be reached. «Punitive damages are never slammed. And plaintiffs’ results are never slammed», said Elizabeth Burch. The two families can certainly choose to continue defending their cases before Judge Jorge Luis Alonso in federal court in Chicago. But since Illinois does not allow punitive damages, that may not result in a different outcome. Boeing attorneys can fight on jurisdictional grounds against any attempt to transfer those cases to a court in a different state that allows punitive damages. The two families also have the option of joining the stipulation agreement later.

The Boeing Company has made some down payments to the families of accident victims. In 2019, it provided US$ 50 million, or US$ 144,500 to each of the 346 bereaved families. This year 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice Deferred Prosecution Agreement required Boeing to pay another US$ 500 million, or US$ 1.45 million per family. Attorneys Kenneth Feinberg and Camille Biros, who managed compensation funds for the families of those who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks as well as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, are overseeing the distribution of checks to the families. While some families have already received the last payment from the US$ 500 million fund, the complexities of those with multiple dependents and with trust funds required to be established for minors have slowed distributions for others. Any award of compensation in Illinois awarded as a result of the stipulation agreement will be in excess of those amounts above. After the attorneys for both parties present the stipulation in Court, Judge Alonso will have to approve it. He may choose to hold a hearing or conference call to go over the details.

Emisiones cero EEUU 2050

AW | 2021 11 10 14:14 | AVIATION / GOVERNMENT

Zero emissions USA 2050

US urges aviation sector to reach zero emissions by 2050

US President Joe Biden’s plan calls for increasing the production of sustainable jet fuels and developing new aeronautical technologies. The US Administration is targeting one of the toughest sources of climate-warming greenhouse gases with a plan that requires the US aviation sector. Achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Aviation has been harder to decarbonize than cars, which can essentially run on batteries, but Joe Biden’s 40-page plan released Tuesday 11/9 calls for increasing production of sustainable jet fuels and developing new aeronautical technologies. He also urges increasing operational efficiency to reduce the amount of fuel burned during flights. The proposal marks the last stage of Biden’s climate plans through regulatory action as his legislative agenda creeps through Congress. He follows his previous efforts to limit methane emissions from oil wells and aims for half of all cars sold in the US to be able to drive without emissions by the end of the decade.

Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg is scheduled to announce details of the plan during an appearance at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, on Tuesday. «The Climate Action Plan we announced today is ambitious but achievable, and will help create a sustainable aviation future. This plan shows that we can combat climate change while the economy grows and well-paying American jobs are created», said the US Secretary of Transportation.

Airlines have been working for years to develop alternative jet fuels, said Scott Sklar, director of sustainable energy at the George Washington University Institute for Energy and Environmental Management. “Oil is their highest cost and has historically high peaks that put them on the brink of bankruptcy. So having domestic fuels that can be blended or replaced with oil at those higher cost peaks makes them more stable in the long run”, said Scott Sklar.

The long lead time to zero emissions highlights the unique challenges to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector. The huge costs of developing new, more efficient aircraft coupled with stringent safety requirements mean that it can take decades to achieve improvements through fleet changes.

NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are working with industry to accelerate the development of more efficient aircraft and engine technologies that could result in 30% fuel savings, according to an FAA statement. They predicted that the new aircraft could begin entering the US fleet in the 2030s. There are also efforts to reduce fuel consumption during taxi, takeoff and landing, as well as to optimize flight paths. «The United States has led aviation for decades, and we must continue that leadership by building a sustainable aviation system. Our freedom to fly requires us to act», FAA Administrator Steve Dickson said in a statement.

CE nuevas sanciones a Bielorrusia

AW | 2021 11 09 12:33 | GOVERMENT / AIRLINES / AIR TRAFFIC

The President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, has called this Monday 08/11 to the European Union (EU) to expedite the expansion of the sanctions regime against the Republic of Belarus in response to its hybrid attack by facilitating the irregular passage of thousands of migrants to Poland; and she has pointed out among the possible targets the airlines of third countries that maintain routes with Minsk. «The EU will study in particular how to sanction third-country airlines that participate in trafficking in human beings, for example by establishing a black list», said Von der Leyen in a statement in which he considered unacceptable the instrumentalization by of Alexander Lukashenko’s regime of migration.

The Commissioner for the Interior, Ylva Johansson, has delved into this line by stating through Twitter that the urgent priority of the community bloc must be to cut the supply to the Minsk Airport, after censuring that the Belarusian authorities attract migrants on flights to Belarus and then I left them trapped at the border with the European Union. In addition to Poland, other neighboring countries of Belarus such as Lithuania and Latvia denounce that Lukashenko tries to blackmail the European Union by increasing migratory pressure, facilitating flights from third countries such as Iraq or Turkey to illegally reach the border of the community bloc. «The Belarusian authorities must understand that pressuring the European Union with the cynical instrumentalization of migrants will not help them in their ends. The instrumentalization of migrants for political purposes by Belarus is unacceptable (…). Belarus must stop putting lives away. in danger», Von der Leyen warned late on Monday 08/11, after the arrival of hundreds of migrants on the border between Belarus and Poland. She has maintained contacts in the last hours with the Prime Ministers of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki; Lithuania, Ingrida Simonyte and Latvia, Arturs Krisjanis Karins. In addition, German policy has advanced that the vice president of the Commission responsible for Migration, Margaritis Schinas, will travel in the coming days to the countries of origin and transit of these migrants to convince their authorities to take measures to prevent them from falling into the trap set by the Belarusian authorities. The European Commission will also study together with the UN and its specialized agencies how to avoid humanitarian crises and ensure that migrants can return safely to their countries of origin.

The Government of Poland has denounced the advance of hundreds of migrants into Belarusian territory and has accused the Government of President Alexander Lukashenko of orchestrating this massive movement and of deploying security forces to escort migrants to the EU border. In addition to the need to tighten the response to Minsk, Brussels has also turned to Poland to ask it to allow agents from the European agencies Frontex and Europol to enter its border to help control irregular passage and ensure adequate and dignified care. of asylum seekers and other arriving migrants. The Community Executive, which has tried unsuccessfully in recent weeks to get Warsaw to allow community experts to travel to the area, recalled this Monday that the deployment of Frontex and Europol agents would help the Polish authorities to manage migratory pressure, but that They cannot travel to the area without formal request from the Polish Government.

Actualmente además de Aerolíneas Argentinas, operan internacionalmente Lufthansa, Boliviana de Aviación, JetSmart Chile, JetSmart Argentina, Latam Airlines, Latam Perú, Latam Brasil, Sky Airline, Avianca Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Air Europa, Iberia, Air France, KLM, Aeroméxico, COPA Airlines, Paranair, Swiss Air Lines, Turkish Airlines.

Argentina 65% tax travels

Foreign travel taxes equivalent to 65% of fares

The Government of Argentina has eliminated entry restrictions to the country, doubling the number of airlines that operate according to data from the Ministry of Transportation. During the first week of November, 217 flights arrived in the country, compared to 24 in the first week of July. All these landings have brought in between 5,000 and 8,000 passengers a day since the border was opened on November 1. The national authorities are in pursuit of the domestic reactivation of tourism and looking for the international receptive to take a leap after almost two years of inactivity. Not so outbound tourism, which implies flight of international currency, since air taxes equivalent to 65% of rates are still in force.

Likewise, the activity has also grown in other airports in the country. The Ministry of Transport has confirmed that the number of airlines that now operate in Argentina has doubled compared to when the entry restrictions were still in force. Currently, in addition to Aerolíneas Argentinas, Lufthansa, Boliviana de Aviación, JetSmart Chile, JetSmart Argentina, Latam Airlines, Latam Peru, Latam Brasil, Sky Airline, Avianca, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Air Europa, Iberia, Air France, KLM, Aeroméxico, COPA Airlines, Paranair, Swiss Air Lines, Turkish Airlines.

Meanwhile, the post-pandemic reality makes it necessary to eliminate the PAIS tax, which is a levy called Tax for an Inclusive and Solidarity Argentina. It is a Law of social solidarity and productive reactivation within the framework of the public emergency, which would have to be repealed in view of the reopening and free transit, undermining the economic reactivation of the country.
