Boeing achieves profitability

Boeing returns to profitability after the company’s worst crisis

Boeing_Isologotype_Blue

The Boeing Company surprised the Wall Street stock market on Wednesday 07/28 by making a net quarterly profit for the first time since fall 2019. Company CEO David Calhoun was optimistic about the company’s efforts to get out of the most difficult stretch in its history. «We are turning a corner and the recovery is gaining momentum», he told financial analysts in a conference call. In a message to employees, he spoke of stability ahead and an end to job cuts as air travel recovers.

The Boeing CEO’s announcement has been somewhat promising: «Last fall, we planned to reduce the size of our workforce to about 130,000 employees by the end of this year. However, with the recovery trends encouraging, we are now planning to maintain the overall size of our workforce roughly consistent with where we are today, at approximately 140,000 employees», said David Calhoun. While the company still recognizes that there are great challenges and a great deal of uncertainty still ahead, that job projection signaled a potential tipping point following Boeing’s cut of some 21,000 jobs since early 2020.

The company’s downfall was driven by two major consecutive crises: first, the grounding of the 737 MAX, which lasted from March 2019 to the end of last year after two plane crashes, and second, the pandemic, which reduced global air travel at one point in 2020 by 90%.

Boeing posted a net profit of US$ 567 million in the second quarter (2Q2021), compared to a loss of US$ 2.4 billion a year ago. Revenue for the quarter was US$ 17 billion, up from US$ 12 billion a year ago. Industry analysts had expected a sizeable loss, and Boeing shares rose in trading on Wednesday. Financial data shows that Boeing continues to burn cash, but at a drastically lower rate than before. The last quarter saw a free cash outflow, meaning net cash brought in from operations, less plant and equipment expense, of US$ 705 million, compared to an outflow of US$ 5.6 billion in the same quarter of the year. last year.

Executives said they project the company will return to positive cash flow next year. One factor that will delay that goal is the US$ 51 billion surplus in advance payments that Boeing received from airline customers as undelivered jets piled up. So even as deliveries increase this year and next, many of those planes will have already been paid for, with minimal new cash added.

Boeing’s net debt increased slightly to US$ 43.3 billion in the quarter. The company has US$ 14.8 billion in bank credit available. Although Boeing eventually made an overall profit, driven by its defense and space unit and its services division, the Boeing Commercial Airplanes division has still generated losses of US$ 472 million. The main drag there is the 787 Dreamliner program.

737 MAX program

Now, however, the Boeing 737 MAX Program is looking up. By the time the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved the plane’s return to service, about 450 undelivered MAXs were in storage. That’s now down to about 390 aircraft in storage, nearly all of which are expected to be delivered by the end of next year 2022. Boeing has delivered more than 130 MAXs since the plane returned to service in December. Airlines have also returned to work more than 190 MAXs previously on the ground. Airlines around the world fly about 1,000 Boeing 737 MAX flights every day. Boeing’s MAX production line in Renton is delivering 16 aircraft per month now and is preparing to build 31 per month early next year 2022.

The only big uncertainty for the MAX is that it is not yet authorized to fly in China. With US-China relations at a low ebb, it is unclear when this huge market will open. For now, Boeing has changed its delivery schedules, moving deliveries from China to next year and moving forward deliveries for other customers. Dave Calhoun said on Wednesday 07/28 that he awaits authorization in China by the end of the year. He admitted that if this does not happen, Boeing will have to lower its projections for its future production rates. But he insisted that he is optimistic that the Chinese will soon conduct test flights of the MAX.

The Boeing CEO noted that Chinese airlines already have around 100 MAXs in their fleets that they want to put in the air. The Winter Olympics scheduled to take place in China in February 2022 could be another catalyst for air travel. «They have a lot of natural incentives to want to do it. Technical issues are being resolved. In fact, I think everyone is behind us», said David Calhoun.

Dreamliner

Boeing has been conducting extensive inspections and rework for faults in the Boeing 787 fuselage that have left small gaps between the main fuselage sections. Its engineers are involved in lengthy discussions with the FAA about how to verify the build quality of each jet.

Meanwhile, around 100 unreleased Dreamliners are now stationed. With the recent discovery of a new manufacturing quality problem, this time with a key structural part in the nose of the aircraft, Boeing has acknowledged that it will be able to deliver less than half by this year 2021.

It has temporarily reduced the production rate from 787 to less than five planes per month. However, David Calhoun said Wednesday 07/28 that it is not that the FAA is holding back Boeing: «This is not that the FAA is getting tough on Boeing», he said that after Boeing’s own inspections found that some Sections of the aircraft were sourced from suppliers slightly outside of the very close tolerances required in engineering design, moved to monitor controls in place and troubleshoot.

Although «the margins of safety in the structural elements of our airplanes are enormous, each part and each airplane is built precisely according to the drawings that we have created,» says David Calhoun. The good news is that now is a good time to solve these manufacturing problems. «We are producing at the lowest rate ever. Customers are not knocking down our door to get their planes in light of the Covid impact on international traffic. So we are very determined to see our way through this», he said the CEO of Boeing.

Once the problems are fixed, the 787 will go from being Boeing’s problem child to being a prized asset among airlines as they prepare for an anticipated resurgence in international air travel and the demand for wide-body jets in the second half. next year 2022.

As proof of the 787’s strong future, David Calhoun said that «during this COVID period, no wide-body airliners have flown more aggressively». Global air passenger demand statistics for June, released Wednesday by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), showed a very slight improvement in the international and domestic air travel markets, albeit significantly below pre-COVID-19 levels due to international travel restrictions. Willie Walsh, IATA Director General, said in a statement that while air travel in some key national markets is improving, «international travel is nowhere near where we need to be. That is not a recovery, it is a crisis. continues to be caused by government inaction», with demand still 80% below 2019 levels.

While Boeing’s best-selling market is the narrow-body 737 MAX aircraft used for domestic travel, its historical strength and advantage over rival Airbus has been in wide-body aircraft for international travel. Only when that market recovers will Boeing be able to emerge gracefully from the turbulent times it has been through.

Condor adquirirá A330NEO

AW | 2021 07 28 20:00 | AIRLINES / INDUSTRY

Aerolínea alemana Condor adquirirá Airbus A330NEO

AW-Condor Airlines_Isotype

Condor to acquire A330NEO

German airline Condor to acquire Airbus A330NEO

A330NEO-improvements

German vacation carrier Condor Airlines said on Wednesday 07/28 that it would place an order for Airbus A330-900NEO (16) to replace a fleet of Boeing 767 widybodies aircraft. «The first aircraft is expected in the fall of 2022, while the replacement of the entire long-haul fleet is scheduled to be completed in mid-2024», Condor said on its website. The leisure airline has not specified the method of acquiring the aircraft, but market sources said that it was expected to buy an unspecified number of A330NEOs and that the rest would be leased from leasing companies.

The deal comes a day after European Union regulators approved € 525.3 million/US$ 619.3 million in German aid for Condor that will help the airline restructure after an earlier decision. was annulled by a European court. It follows a competition between Airbus and Boeing to provide the A330NEO or Boeing 787 to Condor, the sources said. German carrier Condor Airlines has a mixed fleet of planes from both aircraft manufacturers, but relies solely on its old 767s for long-haul needs.

The A330NEO is an upgraded version of the A330 airliner with recent Rolls-Royce engines. It competes with the newer but more expensive Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Sources said the deal will provide new customers for undelivered A330NEO jets originally destined for Garuda Indonesia Airlines or Malaysia’s AirAsia X, debt-ridden airlines whose finances have deteriorated during the pandemic, raising questions about A330NEO deliveries to those carriers. . Airbus was also in talks to replace Boeing jets at another European leisure airline, the British airline and holiday group Jet2. If confirmed, the deal could involve the purchase of around fifty Airbus aircraft, worth about US$ 5 billion before industry discounts of at least 50%. But while Airbus is seen as the frontrunner, talks between Jet2 and suppliers are said to be ongoing.

Deutsche fluggesellschaft Condor erwirbt Airbus A330NEO

A330_NEO

Malta Air incorpora 737-8 200 MAX

AW | 2021 07 27 17:22 | AIRLINES / INDUSTRY

Malta Air toma entrega 737 MAX de alta densidad

Malta Air_Isologotype

Malta Air incorporates Boeing 737-8 200 MAX

Malta Air takes High Density 737 MAX Delivery

Malta Air‘s first Boeing 737-8 200 MAX Gamechanger was delivered this Tuesday, July 27, 2021. Malta Air and Ryanair Group continue to consolidate the low-cost market on the Mediterranean island. These new aircraft carry 4% more passengers than the 737-800s and reduce fuel consumption by 16% per seat, reduce CO2 emissions by a similar amount and reduce noise emissions by 40%. They will enable the Ryanair Group to develop its high-service and environmentally friendly direct flights to Malta, as it leads the recovery of European aviation.

The new aircraft arrived on the Island of Malta for the handover ceremony attended by the Minister of Transport, Ian Borg, the Executive Director of Malta Air, David O’Brien, and the Director General of Civil Aviation, Charles Pace. Ian Borg, said: “I welcome this new Boeing 737-8 200 aircraft; the first, we hope, of many to Malta. This new addition of aircraft to the Malta registry is a strong endorsement of the excellence and professionalism of the Malta Civil Aviation Directorate. Direct air connections are vital for Malta and I am delighted that these new aircraft are able to bring more connections and visitors to Malta, but at the same time reduce fuel, CO2 and noise emissions. Our mission is to build on the strong aviation platform that we have developed, and we look forward to working with Malta Air and other airlines to further develop Malta as a leader in aviation and environmental excellence».

Malta Air CEO David O’Brien said: “Malta Air is proud to fly the Maltese flag on our new aircraft. We wish to thank Transport Civil Aviation Directorate Malta for their professional and rigorous oversight of the introduction of the “Gamechanger” aircraft into our fleet. Our team of more than 3,500 aviation professionals at Malta Air will continue to work hard to secure as many orders as possible for 210 Ryanair Group «Gamechanger» aircraft for Malta Air. We also expect to substantially increase our current base of six aircraft in Malta in the coming years and join the 57 direct routes to Malta currently offered by the Ryanair Group. I am therefore pleased to announce today nine new direct routes to Malta; starting this winter in Eindhoven, Bucharest, Kiev, Lourdes, Milan Malpensa, Paphos, Tallinn, Warsaw and Zagreb. Ryanair contempla Boeing 737-10 MAX

AW | 2021 07 27 08:30 | AIRLINES / INDUSTRY

Ryanair looks at Boeing 737-10 MAX

Ryanair observes candidate as part of negotiations

AW-773377

Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair continues to discuss an order for the latest variant of the MAX line, the Boeing 737-10 MAX. The MAX 10 is the latest major development of the fourth generation 737 line to which the Irish airline has been attracted by the ideal features for a company with high demand for passengers per flight. Ryanair considers a negotiation but only if the price is correct, as the airline is not under any time pressure, its CFO said on Monday 07/26.

Ryanair is Boeing’s industry’s largest European airline customer, approaching a new order that would provide a major boost to the badly injured 737 MAX, which has suffered the onslaught of safety scrutiny after twenty months on the ground. Ryanair is currently the largest European customer for the MAX, with 210 firm orders for the 197-seat Boeing 737-8 200 MAX. He has repeatedly said he is interested in a significant order for the larger 230-seat MAX 10, which took off on its maiden flight in June 2021.

«Maybe by the end of the year we will do something. Maybe not. It’s all based on price. If the price is right, we are interested, but it is a time frame after fiscal year 26, so we are not under time pressure there», said Chief Financial Officer Neil Sorahan in an interview about the release of the airline’s results for its quarter April-June 2021, referring to the airline’s financial year through March 31, 2026, when its current order ends.

In an investor presentation, CEO Michael O’Leary said the MAX 10 was something the airline would «review with Boeing maybe towards the end of the year. We think the MAX 10 is a great plane, but you know we’re very disciplined. At Ryanair, we will only order when we think the price is right».

1st A220 appears for Air France

First public appearance Airbus A220 Air France

Air France awaits its first Airbus A220 regional aircraft of the 300 Series variant which has been seen leaving the Airbus Canada paint shop. The aircraft, in full livery, is scheduled to be delivered to the Gallic airline in September 2021. In early 2021, Air France had accepted a commitment to incorporate its first A220-300, the largest variant, with its first aircraft seen with his livery in the paint shop at the FAL Mirabel.

The A220-300 is registered as C-FPBQ for its Canadian test flights, but will adopt F-HZUA as its French registration once it is delivered to the airline later this year. Airbus Group has invested in the A220 Program which continues to mature and prove to be an incredible investment for the European manufacturer. Following the sale of the Bombardier Aerospace program, the European consortium has secured orders for 648 units with 164 delivered to customers around the world. Currently, the largest customer is Delta Air Lines, which has orders for A220-100 (45) and A220-300 (59). Its largest customer for the A220-300 to date is JetBlue Airways (70), while the second largest order for the A220-300 was placed in July 2019 with the European group Air France-KLM which announced an order for sixty A220-300 (60), all of them bound for Air France. The aircraft will be used to replace its old A318 and A319 aircraft, with similar capacity but much better fuel economy, and a more modern passenger experience.

Adaptation A220

Air France continues with the training processes of the pilot instructors. They have received a training course in Montreal, Canada, and are currently training another 28 instructors using a complete flight simulator. Once the first A220 arrives, these trainees will complete around 20 flights in real-world conditions, before earning their A220-300 type rating. Over time, nearly 700 Air France pilots will be trained to fly the new A220 equipment. The Flight Attendants were trained in Zurich, Switzerland, last year. They are currently finalizing the training content and manuals so that they can deliver the training themselves to a core group of 37 flight attendants. The training will eventually be disseminated to some 2,500 Air France flight attendants.
