41% decrease in sales tickets in Argentina
Ticket sales plummets 41% in January 2020 and hits the commercial aviation sector
Due to the stocks and the PAIS tax, international flights fell 60%. The impact on local tourism has diminished. The exchange rate policies implemented by the current government with the PAIS tax are having a strong impact on the aeronautical and tourism sector. The 30% tax and the recession combined this month to give aviation its worst month in sales in recent years. The sale of tickets collapsed in the first 23 days by 41% year-on-year.
Aerolíneas Argentinas represents more than 50% of the commercial air market, which from the sector estimates that this sharp fall in its operating result will impact the last balance of the airline that has a net loss of AR$ 24,077 million between January 1 and October 30, 2019.
The sale of international tickets suffered the most, decreasing 58% in the first 23 days of 2020. The devaluation and the stocks are two major deterrents when it comes to foreign tourism, to which the 30% country tax is added.
PAIS impacts in Argentina
These dissuasive taxes to travel abroad did not translate into an incentive for domestic flights. The sale of tickets in the national territory fell 16%. According to data from the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), from the period June 2019, month by month there is a gradual
worsening of the number of flights, from a loss of 5% year-on-year in August 2019, the figures were getting worse up to 9% decline in December 2019. The trend shows a marked worsening in international flights, which began 2019 with a year-on-year loss of 3.7% and ended the
year with a year-on-year 13.5% decline in December. While in domestic flights, the deterioration began its impact somewhat in August 2019, showing a 1.9% decline and by December 2019 the number of passengers in the national territory deteriorated to 7.2% year-on-year.
The PAIS tax implemented by the Government of Argentina to reduce speculation of the dollar’s currency has done nothing but worsen the situation in commercial aviation. The established policies are not stimulating air traffic and will impact the financial situation of the airlines, the tourism sector and the country in general. ![]()
