Airbus says the Asia-Pacific region will need more than 17,600 new aircraft by 2040: In the next 20 years, passenger traffic growth of 5.3 percent per year and the accelerating retirement of older, less fuel-efficient aircraft will cause the Asia-Pacific region to require 17,620 new passenger and cargo aircraft. Nearly 30 percent of these will replace older, less fuel-efficient models. In a region that is home to 55 percent of the world’s population, China, India and emerging economies such as Vietnam and Indonesia will be the main drivers of growth in Asia-Pacific. GDP will grow at 3.6 per cent a year compared to the world average of 2.5 per cent and will double in value by 2040. The middle class, which is the most likely to travel, will increase by 1.1 billion to 3.2 billion and the propensity for people to travel will almost triple by 2040. Of the demand for 17,620 aircraft, 13,660 are in the small category such as the A220 and A320 family. In the medium and long range categories, Asia-Pacific will continue to drive demand with around 42 percent of global needs. This translates into 2,470 medium and 1,490 large category aircraft. Cargo traffic in Asia-Pacific will also grow 3.6 percent annually, well above the global average of 3.1 percent, and will lead to a doubling of air cargo in the region by 2040. Globally, the e-commerce-driven express freight will grow at an even faster rate of 4.7 percent annually. Overall, reflecting that strong growth over the next 20 years, some 2,440 freighters will be needed, of which 880 will be newly built. “We are seeing a global recovery in air traffic and as travel restrictions are further eased, the Asia-Pacific region will become one of its main drivers again. We are confident of a strong rebound in air traffic. the region and we expect it to reach 2019 levels between 2023 and 2025.
MC-21 Cold-soak test continues
Irkut MC-21 undergoes repeated cold soak
The Irkut MC-21-300 is in the midst of a repeated cold soak test in the Republic of Yakutia, the coldest region of the Russian Federation. The tests will confirm the narrow-body aircraft’s ability to start in ambient temperatures below -30 degrees C, currently the lower limit in the data table for aircraft type certification.
Having completed RVSM (1000ft Vertical Spacing) testing on January 20, 2022, the MSN 73056 prototype flew with 70 engineers and technicians on board from the Irkut plant in Irkutsk to Yakutsk. Engineers tested the plane at minus 37 degrees Celsius, expecting temperatures of minus 40 degrees this week against the design target of minus 55 degrees C, to which all essential systems on board had been exposed in laboratory conditions.
Irkut’s newly appointed CEO Andrei Boginsky commented that the ongoing tests represent part of the manufacturer’s efforts to extend the limitations currently in the MC-21-300 certificate related to temperatures, airfield elevation and crosswinds. «However, our most important goal for 2022 is to complete the certification of the aircraft with the wing made from Russian materials. This is necessary for Rossiya Airlines to start MC-21-300 revenue operations in all geographical areas», Andrei said. Boginsky.
On December 28, 2021, the Russian national civil aviation authority, the Rosaviatsiya Federal Air Transport Agency, granted the Irkut Corporation what it calls the Initial Type Certification for the MC-21-300 version with Pratt & Whitney engines. PW1431G supplied by the United States. The document allows Irkut to begin serial production of commercial aircraft, which will come with wings made from local materials instead of Japanese yarn and American resin as in five development prototypes. «We are ready to continue working on the MC-21 to lift temporary limitations and optimize the airframe structure, as well as to renew it with PD-14 [engines]», said Rosaviatsiya Chief Alexander Neradko.
The Russian wing has been undergoing testing on the sixth prototype (MSN 73361) since mid-December 2021. Two more sets await installation on deliverable aircraft destined for Rossiya, effectively a St. Petersburg branch of flag carrier Aeroflot Russian Airlines. The airline expects the first shipment in August or September 2022 to allow the start of passenger flights in October 2022, making it the first revenue service operator of the model.
Rossiya Airlines inherited the 2011 framework agreement for fifty MC-21s from Aeroflot. Although the flag carrier confirmed the order in 2018, it decided to hand over all commercial rights to Rossiya in the course of ongoing corporate transformations in the Aeroflot Group under a renewed development strategy.
Irkut Corporation intends to assemble thirty-two MC-21 (32) by 2025, primarily in the 300 version. Production of the fully indigenous MC-21-310 with local avionics and PD-14 engines will begin in 2024. Irkut transported the MSN 73051 back to the factory in Irkutsk on December 22, 2021 for refurbishment, to complement the only MSN 73055 aircraft currently powered by the PD-14. Together, the MC-21s had completed around 800 certification and route test flights as of January 2022. To this date, only two prototypes continued to fly: MSN 73054 logged four hours and MSN 73056 flew for 22 hours. The latter features a revised set of integrated systems for larger local content.
On January 20, 2022, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin chaired a government meeting on civil aviation during which he confirmed his cabinet’s decision to invest another ₽ 61 billion Rubles/US$800 million from the state budget in the MC-21. The money will go to I+D, import substitution and after-sales support. Investments already made in the MC-21 project exceed ₽ 220 billion Rubles, including ₽ 170 billion in I+D; the rest was spent on new tools and configuration of the after-sales support system. Of them, the Russian state budget provided ₽ 150 billion Rubles.

FAA industrial employee protection initiative
FAA proposes protecting Boeing employees overseeing safety
The US aviation safety regulator, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), is taking steps to protect engineers in the US aviation industry from the kind of company pressure that was revealed in investigations into the flaw. of design in the Boeing 737 MAX linked to two fatal accidents. The public will have 30 days to comment on the proposal.
The Federal Aviation Administration proposed on Monday 02/07 new policies that would protect employees of Boeing and other aircraft manufacturers who act on behalf of the Federal Government to review safety, including potential whistleblowers. «The new draft guidance requires manufacturers to monitor, report and investigate all allegations of interference and report the results to the FAA. It also establishes a clear path for these employees to speak freely with FAA certification officials at any time.» time», the agency said in a statement.
The proposal addresses one of the most controversial issues to come out of the 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people: It was Boeing’s own engineers who approved the final system design on the plane that led to the crashes, not FAA employees.
In a statement, Boeing said it supports efforts to improve transparency and independence in the agreement and will work with the agency to ensure those personnel «are able to perform their vital roles without interference through an open communication and supportive environment».
Despite efforts to reform the aircraft design approval process, Boeing employees have continued to raise concerns about their ability to raise safety concerns. A 2021 survey of company workers found that 35% raised issues of conflicts of interest and lack of independence, the FAA reported in August 2021. The FAA, sometimes at the direction of Congress, has for decades allowed workers to Industry employees known as «designates» review aircraft designs.
The agency’s proposal is designed to ensure that those employees act as delegated representatives of the government and are not subject to any pressure their careers may suffer if they speak out on security issues. A House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee report on the accidents said the system had created conflicts of interest and contributed to a design flaw in the plane.
A bill passed by Congress in December 2020 known as the Aircraft Certification Reform and Accountability Act did not eliminate the practice, but included several provisions that require changes. Additionally, FAA Administrator Steve Dickson has listed the issue as a priority in how the agency responds to processes on the Boeing 737 MAX line. The issue of pressure on Boeing workers charged with acting on behalf of the FAA has also led to fines against the company. Boeing agreed to pay $6.6 million a year ago to settle civil charges that include pressuring its employees.
A safety system on the 737 MAX known as the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) repeatedly pushed the aircraft’s nose down, rendering the aircraft unstable in both Indonesian and ET-610 plane crashes. 302 in Ethiopia. Twenty months of safety scrutiny to iron out design flaws in the 737 MAX line. As of December 2020 the system has been redesigned and completed to avoid future failures.

Ethiopian reinstates Boeing 737 MAX
Boeing 737 MAX returns to the skies
Ethiopian Airlines, the largest aviation group in Africa, flew its Boeing 737 MAX aircraft again this Tuesday 01/02 after a tragic plane crash in March 2019. «Ethiopian Airlines has returned its Boeing 737-8 MAX to the skies today with the president and executives of the airline’s board of directors, Boeing executives, ministers, ambassadors, government officials, journalists and customers on board the first flight», the group said in a press release. «Safety is the highest priority at Ethiopian Airlines and guides every decision we make and every action we take», said Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group.
On March 10, 2019, Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 crashed shortly after leaving Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, killing all 157 people on board. The incident prompted Ethiopia’s flag carrier, along with many other airlines around the world, to ground Boeing 737 MAX planes.
Fired pilots for political non-alignment
Aerolíneas Argentinas is a company politically influenced by the La Cámpora Group that governs several companies managed by the Argentine State. Once again it has transpired that the bids for leadership and the submission of personnel are affected by identity and political thought. The General Secretary of APLA, Pablo Biró, has initiated this week a purge with the dismissal of pilots who do not coincide with the political and union guidelines and thoughts, carrying out dismissals without cause of two approved pilots with the consent of the CEO of the company, Pablo Ceriani.
APLA, political confrontation history
The Secretary of the association that brings together the pilots of Aerolineas Argentinas has continued to establish an aggressive campaign against the head of the ANAC, Paola Tamburelli, whom he even accused «of not assuming her responsibilities and lack of decorum», while in the field aeronautical many look the other way. Weeks ago, the LADE-Flybondi agreement has reactivated the confrontations from different angles. A note signed by the four aeronautical unions APLA, APA, UPSA and Atepsa, agreed to oppose the wet lease agreement between Flybondi Líneas Aéreas and LADE Líneas Aéreas. The union secretary of APLA addressed a personal note to the Minister of Defense accusing him of «having disappointed him» for having allowed the agreement between the two airlines, describing the fact as «a notorious violation of the constitutive obligations of LADE, which under no circumstances can carry out aero-commercial activity since its promotion purpose excludes it”. The personal accusation has opened the umbrella in the political sector of the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Tourism, as well as the Air Force/LADE, Aerolineas Argentinas, among others who clearly expressed approval of the LADE-Flybondi operation, by the reason that the low cost airline had been affected by the number of infections of its crew at the beginning of the summer season and needed to carry out the scheduled flights.
Operations
After a series of pressures from the APLA Pilots Union, the eye of the storm continues to focus on the Operations Area, making known among backstage the existence of a list of impure pilots, which increases the rumor of more dismissals.
A new dismissal this week was the Commander of Aerolíneas Argentinas Sebastián Fabre, who in July 2018 refused to read a «union proclamation» to passengers in mid-flight, which was later publicly threatened by a member of the APLA Board of Directors, the then Guild Delegate Santiago Girou. Commander Sebastián Fabre sued the Delegate for tightening, obtaining a favorable ruling before the Justice. These situations of unjustified dismissals put in evidence and on alert the area of pilots in Aerolíneas Argentinas.
UALA, end of a guild
The union pressures coincide with the call of the APLA Guild for this Tuesday, February 8, 2022, to the call for a General Assembly of affiliates from all sectors at the headquarters of the Union of Airline Aviators (UALA), a union that brought together the pilots of Austral Líneas Aéreas, for the completion of the absorption of UALA by APLA. The recent dismissal without cause of the Commander of the Embraer 190 fleet, Eduardo Claro, last Director of the Participated Property Program (PPP) of Austral Líneas Aéreas, which he represented as a shareholder, for opposing the Aerolíneas-Austral merger and questioning the management of the fleet unified, the group could run into difficulties with aircraft availability. Currently, out of 76 aircraft, seventeen remain out of service, which represents one (1) aircraft on the ground out of eight Boeing 737-700 (8), seven (7) out of twenty-nine Boeing 737-800 (29) and eight (8) over twenty-six Embraer E190-100AR (26), one (1) of eight Airbus A330-200 (8), while the entire fleet of five Boeing 737-8 MAX (5) are operational. Although the situation of the current health crisis is addressed, it is understandable that the demand does not justify the activation of the entire fleet.
State subsidies
The advance payments of subsidies by the Argentine State that are approaching are going to generate more discomfort in the entire opposition political arena. The items of millions of Pesos (AR$) in subsidies that the company is estimated to require this year 2022 will generate a new turning point in the treatment in the National Congress, a historical issue that many claim to put an end to a broken bag.
