AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Horizon Air cancels routes due to lack of pilots

The shortage of pilots is a reality that many airlines face that often prevent their own expansion

Horizon Air says it can no longer fly to Colorado Springs from Seattle because it does not have enough riders. The airline canceled 6 percent of its flights in June due to its shortage of pilots, but this may be the first time a route has been abandoned because of it. Horizon says it faces a shortage of pilots for at least another year, according to a press release from Colorado Springs Airport. The statement quoted airline officials as saying that the shortage «is expected to continue for some time.»

Meanwhile, while Horizon is an affiliate of Alaska, the parent company is shifting part of its regional capacity to Skywest Airlines and essentially allowing the independent regional company to compete with its own company. Skywest flies 20 new Embraer E175 aircraft to Alaska and while Horizon has ordered 30 similar aircraft, it only has two in the air and recently delayed the delivery of six of the Brazilian passenger aircraft. Horizon mainly flies well used Q400 bombers. Skywest has ordered five more E175s to use on the Alaska routes and the Horizon pilot syndicate filed a lawsuit that disputed Horizon’s postponement of its E175 delivery. A \ W

Reestablecimiento vuelos Irak-Rusia

Un avión de Iraqi Airways

AW | 2017 09 17 20:22 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Re-establishment flights Iraq-Russia

An Iraqi Airways plane lands in Russia resetting air traffic after 13 years of suspension

A Boeing 737-800 from Iraqi Airways landed at Vnukovo International Airport (Moscow), which was attended by a delegation chaired by Iraqi Transport Minister Kazem al Hamami.

The aviation authorities of Iraq and Russia had agreed to resume direct flights between Baghdad and Moscow in 2015. At that time the option of opening routes to Erbil in Iraq and St. Petersburg and Kazan in Russia was also handled.

Following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, the UN introduced sanctions against Baghdad in the aviation sector. The restrictions forced in particular the Russian Aeroflot and the Iraqi Iraqui Airways to suspend the direct flights between both countries. In addition, in May 2004, a year after the US invaded Iraq, the Russian Ministry of Transport cut off air traffic with Baghdad as insufficient level of flight safety to that «danger zone». A \ W

Tráfico aéreo mundial en 24h

AW | 2017 09 17 20:10 | AIR TRAFFIC

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

World-wide air traffic, visualized during 24 hours

NASA software lets you see global aircraft flight paths across continents

Air traffic management software developed by NASA in 2006 has included improvements, including the ability to visualize global aircraft flight paths across continents.

For this benefit, the FACET (Future Air Traffic Management Concepts Evaluation Tool) system receives data from the Official Airline Guide, which provides departure and arrival cities, and scheduled departure and arrival times. FACET then traces a Great Circle route between the linked cities and calculates where the aircraft will be at any given time.

«We have used this capability to study the impact of global aviation emissions on the environment,» said Kapil Sheth, an aerospace engineer at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California.

FACET is playing looking ahead, a role in NASA’s work to develop and demonstrate a concept for the next generation of air traffic management functionality in the United States when it comes to more efficiently planning the route and arrival phases of a flight.

The concept, known as Airspace Technology Demonstration 3, aims to bring together new terrestrial and cabin systems capable of anticipating bad weather or congested air traffic and proposing the most effective way to avoid delays, all in real time and in a way that rationalizes operations for both airlines and air traffic managers.

The ground component is now being tested at the American Airlines Integrated Operations Center in Fort Worth, TX. The cabin-based component is scheduled to be tested aboard a trio of Alaska Airlines aircraft later this year. A \ W

AIRBUS ASSEMBLY LINE AT MOBILE, ALABAMA, UNITED STATES

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

airbus_assembly_logo.jpgAirbus receives parts for A321 No.50th in Mobile

Just two years ago, Airbus joined the first parts to build the first aircraft on the assembly line in Mobile, Alabama

Mobile, Alabama · About a year and a half after the delivery of its first aircraft, the installation of Airbus Mobile has received the parts that will become its # 50 aircraft. At the end of this year, Airbus executives expect to see the Final Assembly Line in Mobile achieve a target rate of four airplanes per month.

The Airbus Mobile Aeroplex final assembly line at Brookley receives the major components of Europe for every jet it builds, including the fuselage, wings and vertical stabilizer. Parts delivered from abroad include front and rear fuselage sections, wings and tail assembly. The specialized shipping process takes them from Hamburg, Germany, to the coast of Alabama, United States.

Airbus-graphic -001

The process has gradually accelerated as the FAL reaches the speed towards a goal of delivering four airplanes per month. It is supposed to have reached that goal later this year, and officials have said it is under way.

«The arrival of the 50th ship is just in time for a schedule that was created more than two years ago,» said Daryl Taylor, Vice President and General Manager of the Airbus Manufacturing Factory in the United States. «The production team here at Mobile, and our Airbus colleagues around the world, have continued to work together to ensure we keep our promises to our customers and I am proud of what we have achieved together.»

Airbus has currently delivered 37 aircraft from its Mobile plant to four customers: American Airlines, Spirit Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Delta Air Lines. Almost all of them have been the model A321; according to information published by Airbus, the average list price for an Airbus A321 is US $ 116 million.

Now parts for the number 50 aircraft have entered the Airbus Mobile plant. A commemorative sign was struck on the side of one of the fuselage parts. Airbus General Manager Darryl Taylor says the arrival of the set of pieces for the No. 50 aircraft signifies the achievement of the planned aircraft construction in Mobile, Alabama.

The company now employs about 1.000 people at the Mobile, Alabama factory. The Nº50 aircraft to be built here on the Airbus final assembly line will be an A321-200 for Delta Airlines. The aircraft will be completed by the month of December 2017, so Airbus will have achieved a major achievement in the construction and assembly processes outside Europe. A \ W

Aprueban acuerdo American-Latam

AW-70082277.png

AW | 2017 09 15 18:28 | AIRLINES ALLIANCE

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

American-Lattam Approved

The Administrative Council of Economic Defense (CADE) approved without restriction the agreement between Latam Airlines and American Airlines

The CADE would have indicated that the agreement is greater than a «code-share» because «presupposes a more intense cooperation, since it allows the coordination of its parts in diverse aspects, as for example in the offer of seats in the pricing , in sales, in marketing and in capacity, in addition to anticipating the exchange of income and even profit and loss».

In order to carry out its analysis, the regulator evaluated that the markets involved in the agreement contemplated flights for passengers departing from São Paulo (SP), Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Manaus (AM) to Miami and two other cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro NY. In all cases, CADE concluded that «there are no significant obstacles to entry and, in addition, the conditions of competition in the routes are sufficient to remove the competitive concerns arising from a possible exercise of market power» by the two companies.

The CEO of Latam Airlines, Enrique Cueto, evaluated the resolution as «excellent news for Brazilian passengers who will be the main winners, accessing lower prices, better connection times and new routes to travel between Brazil and the United States.»  A \ W
