Tarifas bajas hechas bien

Frontier chasing lead ULCC

Frontier Airlines is overtaking Spirit Airlines as the leading US ULCC

AW-Spirit Airlines_A3191001

Spirit Airlines since its transformation into an ultra-low-cost airline more than a decade ago has been the North American standard for this airline business model. Ryanair’s first modeling of Europe by comparing its cost structure and disaggregating prices, Spirit Airlines has gone on to innovate new ideas like its fare club and carry-on bag charging. While the media was largely critical and sometimes dismissive of Spirit, investors benefited from a business model that produced strong financial returns and set trends that others in the industry followed, at least to some extent.

When investor Bill Franke and his team at Indigo Partners sold Spirit and bought Frontier Airlines, they quickly adopted the nickname ULCC and even used it as their stock ticker when they went public in 2021. Promising to be more customer-friendly and transparent, Frontier it also embraced the motto «low rates done right», a not-so-subtle dig at Spirit, which coupled with the high return on invested capital generated a lot of customer complaints. As Spirit has worked to smooth its edges, iron out rough spots, Frontier has stuck to its low-cost principles and could soon take on the mantle of the ULCC leader.

Model ULCC

The evolution of the Ultra Low Cost (ULCC) model in the United States continues to show signs of maturity and robustness. Ryanair pioneered the ultra-low-cost airline model in Europe. In the United States, low cost airlines were tested, positioning itself with Southwest Airlines as the most emblematic airline, to later reproduce the low cost/low fare model due to its operational efficiency. But then they added the disaggregation of ticket prices: CEO Michael O’Leary stated that he hoped one day his tickets would be free as a result. When Spirit Airlines began its transformation in 2005, it was clear that they could not compete with much larger carriers simply by copying its model. So, based on the idea of targeting customers who pay for tickets themselves, they set out to reduce their unit costs while simultaneously unbundling their ticket prices to produce industry-leading low fares. The company coined the term ultra-low-cost airline to differentiate it from Southwest Airlines especially, long considered a low-cost airline. As Spirit implemented this model, its average rate fell from approximately US$ 105 to less than US$ 70, while ancillary revenue grew from less than US$ 5 to more than US$ 50.

With a rapidly changing model, Spirit Airlines surprised many customers and ended up in the unenviable position of leading the industry with its complaint rate. Starting in 2012, right after the airline went public through an initial public offering, the company hired a third-party brand company to help it better refine its messages to customers. This created terms like «Bare Fare», «Fit Fleet» and «Frill Control». Gradually, this message began to take hold, but Spirit’s operations tended to struggle as the airline would choose to run late flights rather than cancel them. This gave them a low on-time rate as measured by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Its ability to recover from irregular operations when most flights are only flown once a day still challenges the airline, as observed this summer 2021.

Low rates done right

FrontierAirlines

After guiding Spirit Airlines to a good global benchmark for low costs, Bill Franke bought Frontier Airlines and then added Barry Biffle, Spirit’s Marketing leader during its transition, as its CEO. Both Franke and Biffle know what has and hasn’t worked at Spirit Airlines. They know that the model provided high returns and strong resilience. But because Spirit needed to catch up with its customers, Frontier was able to start with customers from day one. They call this «low rates well done». While what they do is really no different from Spirit currently, they started this with their ULCC transition and therefore do not currently have to catch up on a fare rebuild.

Change in strategy

When Bob Fornaro, the former CEO of AirTran Airways, took over the reins of Spirit Airlines in 2016, he accelerated changes initiated previously to address customer expectations issues and added a strong focus on operational efficiency. Additionally, the company’s network strategy shifted somewhat from serving the largest cities in the United States, often other airline hubs such as Dallas and Chicago, to growing in smaller and midsize markets. The airline has added cities such as Akron, Greensboro, Asheville, and Louisville, among many others. All of these changes were good for Spirit Airlines and represented good growth from the company’s small beginnings. However, these changes put pressure on Spirit Airlines’ cost structure. Running more flights on time has meant reducing aircraft utilization the number of hours each aircraft flies per day. Relaxing the toughest customer rules made sense, but it also returned costs to the business that were previously passed on to customers. Adding customer bonuses like TSA Pre-check and WiFi makes a lot of customers happy, and that’s a good thing. But they also put pressure on costs. The net result of all these changes modestly moved Spirit Airlines away from the strict ULCC model, or perhaps rather, they began to evolve what that model really meant.

Meanwhile, Frontier Airlines is more like Spirit Airlines without the rough edges of customers allowing for the most ULCC model and pursuing leadership in the vast US market.

Acuerdo salarial Sun Country Airlines

AW | 2021 12 07 12:20 | AIRLINES

Sun Country y pilotos aproximan acuerdo términos contrato salarial

Sun Country Airlines_Isologotype_001

Sun Country Airlines pilots will soon receive a significant pay increase if their union members approve a deal reached with the company. If approved, the airline will have some of the highest paid Boeing 737 pilots in the United States.

AW-Sun Country Airlines_73780001

The Minneapolis (MN)-based carrier and the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA) are finalizing the language of the negotiations after reaching an agreement in principle last week, and expect a vote from the pilots later this week. December 2021. In seeking labor negotiation approval, Sun Country Airlines will have some of the highest paid Boeing 737 pilots in the country. The Boeing 737 aircraft line is the most commonly flown commercial aircraft with thousands in flight at any given time around the world.

A spokesman for the APLA pilots union, Will Outlaw, declined to provide specific salary details because the deal has not been reviewed by the pilots, but said negotiations began this summer and moved quickly, with both parties motivated to reach a compromise. agreement. Pilots will get a nice raise and some work rule improvements, while management can take advantage of the deal to recruit pilots. Sun Country is looking to hire more pilots so it can grow its fleet and network. «For the fourth year of the contract, the pay rates, especially at the upper end of the scale for the more veteran captains, are above Delta Air Lines’ rates for the same aircraft, so they are quite good», Will Outlaw said.

Atlanta (GA) -based Delta Air Lines, the largest airline in Minneapolis-St. Paul currently has the highest salary in the industry for 737 line pilots. Delta is currently in negotiations with its pilot group for a new contract.

«We believe that this agreement, once ratified, will help us meet or exceed our growth targets, which is beneficial to our pilots, all members of our team and our community. This is a pivotal moment in time for our company, our incredible group of pilots and the future of Sun Country Airlines», said Jude Bricker, CEO of Sun Country Airlines.

Sun Country and the pilots union agreed last year to postpone negotiations due to the pandemic. This year’s negotiations moved much faster than the previous contract. Five years of start and stop negotiations passed before the pilots signed a contract in 2015. Sun Country was then owned by brothers Mitch and Marty Davis, from the same Davis family who own countertop and surface manufacturer Cambria. Before that contract was reached, the pilots had approved a strike authorization after working under an expired contract for five years. The 2015 contract raised a new hire’s salary from US$ 30 per hour to US$ 48 per hour and provided incremental increases over the five-year life of the contract. Pay for senior captains in 2019 topped US$ 201 per hour under that contract. The Davis family sold the company in 2018 to Apollo Global Management of New York, and Sun Country went public in early 2021.

British Airways cancelaría 2.000 vuelos

AW | 2021 12 07 09:12 | AIRLINES ROUTES

Gobierno Reino Unido exige pasajeros prueba PCR negativa

British_Airways_Isologotype Newell & Sorell, 1997

AW-787BA

British Airways would cancel 2,000 flights

UK government demands negative PCR test passengers

AW-78700778

Due to the decision of the United Kingdom to require passengers to have a negative PCR test, even if they are vaccinated, the British company British Airways has canceled 2,000 scheduled flights due to an advance of the Omicron variant in the country. Despite everything, the company retains some optimism and hopes that the new variant of Coronavirus is circumstantial.

The decision of the British government to implement from this Tuesday 07/12 the obligation that passengers who arrive in the country have a negative PCR test with them, even if they are vaccinated, and that this test is not more than 48 hours old, has meant immediately that British Airways canceled more than 2,000 flights, due to the probable drop in demand. These two thousand flights will be suspended until March 2022. January 2022 will be the worst month, with a thousand flights canceled. In four months, 2,144 flights will stop operating. This decision affects all the routes of the company, but it is especially serious in the links with Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa with 31 frequencies canceled weekly, where practically the border closures are total. It must be remembered that both the Netherlands and Great Britain have deep cultural and historical ties with South Africa. The cancellations also affect 31 other operations at Glasgow, Belfast and Birmingham airports. Only the operations between London and Cairo are improved, to which another twelve additional flights are added and, instead of one daily flight, it is changed to two.

In spite of everything, the most important company of the IAG group said that it retains some optimism because since February 2022, for example, it plans to increase its operations by 600 percent compared to 2021. British Airways has indicated that what is happening with Omicron seems an accident punctual on a road to recovery and hopes that the boreal summer of 2022 will be practically that of normalization.

Bielorrusia anuncia restricciones

AW | 2021 12 07 08:28 | AIR TRAFFIC / GOVERNMENT

Bielorrusia anuncia sanciones a aerolíneas occidentales

Belarus announces restrictions

Belarus announces sanctions on western airlines

Belarus has announced this Monday, December 6, 2021, an embargo on the products of Western countries that adopted sanctions against Minsk and sanctions against the airlines of the members of the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom. The response measures against the illegal external sanctioning pressure from the West, while the Government seeks to defend national interests, says the Foreign Ministry statement.

Minsk considers that the illegitimate restrictions against the Belarusian aviation sector are dictated by unfair competition. «Similar measures will be adopted by our country in relation to the airlines of the EU and the United Kingdom», indicates the official statement. In turn, in order to counter Western pressure and strengthen economic security, the former Soviet Republic will pursue the path of economic integration with Russia. It will also expand the list of undesirable individuals who will not be able to access Belarusian territory, which will concern citizens of countries that discriminate against officials, journalists and representatives of President Alexandr Lukashenko’s organizations. Minsk also explained that the measures can be canceled if the countries that adopted sanctions renounce the logic of the Cold War and return to the path of constructive cooperation.

Last week, Minsk accused Brussels of trying to strangle its economy and of continuing the policy of demonizing the regime due to the decision of the EU Council to impose the first sanctions related to the migrant crisis on its border, which have been coordinated with the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The sanctions, which represent Brussels’ response to the crisis that erupted on November 8, 2021 with the concentration of several thousand migrants on the border between Belarus and Poland, affect high-ranking officials, prominent members of the judiciary, as well as the propaganda media and eleven entities, including the Belarusian airline Belavia.

This is the fifth round of sanctions that the EU has imposed on Belarus since the presidential elections of August 2020, in which Alexandr Lukashenko prevailed again and which provoked European restrictive measures due to the wave of repression unleashed by the regime against peaceful protesters.

¡Me encanta Antigua!

Ninety-seven passengers arrived on the first flight to Antigua just two days ago, and subsequently Frontier Airlines will operate direct services to the country every Saturday.

Frontier Airlines President and CEO Barry Biffle said direct flights between the two destinations show tremendous growth for the company and its relationship with the Caribbean. «We are excited to begin the only nonstop flights between Orlando and Antigua and Barbuda today. Frontier’s expansion into the Caribbean, and now the West Indies region, highlights our epic history of international growth over the past year, at the same time which maintains the affordable rates that shape our ‘Low Rates Well Done’ strategy», according to Barry Biffle.

Tourism Minister Charles Fernández, who delivered a speech at the opening ceremony on Saturday, expressed his satisfaction at forging such a close relationship with the airline. «This journey started with us about two years ago. We met in Miami, Florida and did a presentation to the Frontier Airlines Executive and then watch them all say ‘I love Antigua! I love Antigua! We need to find a way to get there», said Charles Fernandez. The Minister of Tourism called the launch of the new Frontier Airlines service «good news for Antigua and Barbuda as we approach the winter season». He also said the occasion comes at a time when there is so much controversy surrounding travel and vaccination. «With competitive rates on offer and increased connections to other US cities outside of Orlando, we expect to see a significant increase in visitors staying in Antigua and Barbuda from the US market», said the Minister of Tourism.

FIT 2021, aerolíneas grandes ausentes

AW | 2021 12 06 15:30 | TOURISM / FAIR / CONGRESS

25º edición FIT refuerza presencia destinos nacionales

FIT_Isologotype

Presencia nacional

FIT 2021, airlines the big absentees

25th edition FIT reinforces presence of national destinations

AW-FIT 2021_25-0006

FIT 2021 brings together the twenty-fifth edition with the participation of travel agencies, OTAs, airlines and national and international destinations for which the Argentine tourist is one of its most important markets.

Opening ceremony

The Minister of Tourism and Sports, Matías Lammens, led the opening ceremony of the twenty-fifth edition of the International Tourism Fair of Latin America (FIT), this Saturday, December 4, 2021, the most important annual event in the tourism sector, which on this occasion has Uruguay as a guest country and Tucumán as a prominent province. In this context, the current situation of the industry was analyzed and pointed out about the Pre-Trip program. “It was the most important public policy in the history of tourism. He put the sector to work at a difficult time. The first edition was a very great success and the second has already quintupled those numbers. Tourism is one of the main industries in the country and is going to be the protagonist of development in the coming years», said the Minister of Tourism.

Gustavo Hani, President of the International Tourism Fair (FIT), said: «We want to accompany Minister Lammens so that PreViaje is not only a reactivation policy but is consolidated as a State policy». While Tabaré Viera, Minister of Tourism of Uruguay, highlighted: «It is a pleasure to meet again at this fair, one of the most important in the world, after so many months. We appreciate the distinction of being here as a guest country. like at home». Likewise, the President of the Tourism Board of the City of Buenos Aires, Gonzalo Robredo, remarked: “FIT is the most important meeting of the year for tourism. And this edition is special: with enormous support from the national government and the nobility of the private sector, we are emerging from the worst historical crisis in the sector”. In addition, the Minister of the Interior, Eduardo de Pedro; the Secretary for Tourism Promotion, Yanina Martínez; the Executive Secretary of INPROTUR, Ricardo Sosa; the President of the Federal Tourism Council (CFT), Claudia Grynszpan; the President of the Argentine Confederation of Medium Enterprises (CAME), Alfredo González; and the President of the Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies of Buenos Aires (AVIABUE), Mario Ijelman. The Governor of Río Negro, Arabela Carreras; the governors of Misiones, Oscar Herrera Ahuad, and Neuquén, Omar Gutiérrez; the Vice Governor of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands, Mónica Urquiza; the Argentine Ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Scioli; the Vice Minister of Tourism of Brazil, Diniz Nepomuceno; the President of the National Parks Administration, Lautaro Erratchú; and the President of Aerolineas Argentinas, Pablo Ceriani.

The International Tourism Fair will take place from December 4 to 7, 2021 at the La Rural fairgrounds. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Nation will have two stands, where it will carry out the promotion of Argentine destinations and the institutional agenda.

National presence

AW-FIT 2021_25-0005)

This year 2021, the 25th edition had a strong presence of national destinations. In addition, through the FIT SALE, visitors were able to buy their next vacations, taking advantage of the benefits of Pre-trip and professional advice from travel agencies. Instead, the International pavilion was more austere. Destinations that appear among the most chosen by Argentines such as the Caribbean, Mexico or Italy, were absent. On the other hand, Brazil has stomped with a stand from the country, along with several destinations with their own places at the fair. While Uruguay, the guest country, was presented in a smaller space. The same is true for international airlines. Many of those who participated in previous editions, but suspended their routes, were not present. On the other hand, those that did not leave the country, Iberia, Air Europa or Gol Linhas Aéreas, were absent this year. In the post-pandemic crisis, it can be inferred that they still have pending with customers such as tickets to be reimbursed or with date changes that did not travel, so they would avoid direct contact with them.

Travel agencies and tour operators, such as Despegar.com and CVC Corp. (Al mundo, Avantrip and Biblos) do not participate in this edition either. Unlike previous editions, those that were present do so in a stand with fewer square meters.

Rusia denuncia espionaje Mar Negro

AW | 2021 12 06 05:17 | AVIATION SAFETY / GOVERNMENT

Russia denounces Black Sea espionage

US spy planes threaten civil aviation

The Russian Federation said it will officially protest to the United States over an incident over the Black Sea on Saturday 04/12, when civilian planes had to deviate from their routes due to a US spy plane. «Increased activity by US and NATO fighter jets near Russian borders creates dangerous incident risks for civil aviation. If a catastrophe over the Black Sea were prevented this time, this does not mean that the United States and NATO could risk people’s lives in the future without punishment», said on Sunday 05/12 Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on her Facebook page.

According to Russia’s civil aviation agency, two airliners had to veer off and change altitude because a NATO surveillance plane crossed their routes and ignored signals from Russian aviation security authorities. One flight was Aeroflot from Tel Aviv to Moscow and the other was a Maltese plane flying from the Black Sea resort of Sochi to North Macedonia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and United States President Joe Biden plan to hold a video call on Tuesday 07/12, after weeks of escalating tension over the Russian military build-up on the border with Ukraine and the military activities of the NATO around the Black Sea. While US intelligence had concluded that the Kremlin was planning an offensive against Ukraine as early as next year with an estimated 175,000 troops, Russia warned the West not to cross the Kremlin’s security red line and avoid infrastructure expansion. Western military in Ukraine.

Segundo satélite Sentinel-6B

AW | 2021 12 06 05:06 | AEROSPACE

Airbus completa segundo satélite oceánico Sentinel-6B

Airbus_Isologotype_svg

Second Sentinel-6B satellite

Airbus completes second ocean satellite Sentinel-6B

AW-Earth_Sentinel-6B

Airbus Group has completed Sentinel-6B, the second ocean monitoring satellite in the European Copernicus program, and is now testing it extensively over the next six months in preparation for use in space. The Copernicus satellite meets the space conditions during the test campaign.

The Copernicus Sentinel-6 mission currently offers high-precision measurements of ocean surface topography through the first of two Sentinel-6A satellites, launched in November 2020. The two mission satellites are built to measure the distance to the sea surface to within a few centimeters and map at a ten-day rate during a mission of up to seven years. Its purpose is to record changes in the height of the sea surface, variations in sea level and analyze and observe ocean currents. Accurate observation of changes in the height of the sea surface provides information on global sea levels, the speed and direction of ocean currents, and the heat stored in the oceans. The measurements, taken 1,336 km above Earth, are crucial for modeling the oceans and predicting sea level rise.

This information helps governments and institutions establish effective protection for coastal regions. The data is also valuable for disaster management organizations and for authorities carrying out urban planning, flood protection plans or building levees. As a result of global warming, global sea levels are currently rising by an average of 3.3 millimeters per year, with potentially dramatic consequences for countries with densely populated coastlines. Sentinel-6, part of Europe’s Copernicus, is also an international collaboration between ESA, NASA, NOAA and Eumetsat.
