Evolution of Airbus Scale
Airbus evolves innovation landscape Airbus Scale
Airbus Group has launched this November 3, 2021 Airbus Scale, a new innovation unit that brings together corporate innovation, commitment to emerging companies and business creation activities. This will support Airbus’ recovery and future growth, contributing to the development of future programs and businesses as part of the company’s zero emissions ambition. This new unit reinforces the overall innovation landscape at Airbus and complements other Airbus innovation centers such as Acubed in Silicon Valley, the Airbus China Innovation Center (ACIC) in Shenzhen and technology demonstrator Airbus UpNext.
“Being a pioneer in the sustainable aerospace industry will be a collective challenge and innovation is at its core. When configuring Airbus Scale, we will use our internal knowledge and know-how to scale new companies from underutilized assets. We will also look outside to find and inject into Airbus new companies that have technology relevant to our future zero emissions ambition. This additional lever in our innovation toolkit will help create the ecosystem we need on our journey to net zero”, said Sabine Klauke, Airbus Technical Director.
The new innovation unit is an evolution of how Airbus approaches its internal and external innovation activities. Building on the experience gained over the past seven years with BizLab, Airbus Scale will converge and diversify entrepreneurship and start-up partnerships to build and grow fully developed, profitable, co-financed businesses and further expand the competitive advantage of Airbus. In this approach, Airbus Scale will promote and identify internal corporate innovation opportunities that can be developed into solutions for the external world, bringing them to market and attracting external investments that could result in spin-offs, in order to generate value for Airbus. In parallel, Airbus Scale will seek out and partner with external startups in later stages to mature and develop technology and product innovations, combining internal concepts and external startup intelligence for mutually beneficial collaborations. In both cases, Airbus Scale facilitates and enables a more effective innovation ecosystem.
Air France-KLM environmental commitment
Air France-KLM accelerates its environmental transition
The Air France-KLM Group has established to accelerate its environmental transition with the commitment through the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), to establish targets in accordance with the Paris Agreement, to limit global warming. Air France-KLM Group and its companies continue to mobilize to reduce their environmental footprint in a process of transparency and responsibility in the face of the challenges of global warming. Air France-KLM are committed to having their CO2 emission reduction targets validated by the independent reference body SBTi, founded by the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), the United Nations Global Compact and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). SBTi assesses and verifies the CO2 reduction targets of companies, based on a scientific approach and criteria, ensuring that the targets are compatible with the Paris Agreement.
• Air France-KLM is committed to setting additional CO2 reduction targets by 2035, in addition to its ambition to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 • The Group will present these objectives for validation by SBTi in the first half of 2022. • The science-based targeting approach aims to limit global warming to well below 2° C, in accordance with the Paris Agreement.
The commitment letter signed today with SBTi puts the Air France-KLM Group and its companies on the path set by this Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to well below 2 ° C. Air France-KLM is one one of the first European airline groups that has decided to have SBTi validate its decarbonisation track record. This important new step in the Group’s decarbonization strategy complements its goal of net zero emissions in 2050. “The climate emergency is the biggest challenge facing our industry today. All the Group’s employees and their companies have taken steps to reduce their environmental footprint for many years, but today we need to accelerate our transition to more sustainable air transport. The SBTi commitment demonstrates our determination to achieve this by setting our emissions reduction trajectory within an indisputable and demanding scientific framework. We sign this commitment because we are confident in our ability to successfully carry out this transition, with our employees, our customers and all of our partners», says Benjamin Smith, CEO of the Air France-KLM Group.
The decarbonisation trajectory of the Air France-KLM group is mainly based on: • An ambitious plan to renew the Group’s fleet with new generation aircraft that emit between 20 and 25% less CO2. Between 2019 and 2021, the Group invested 2.5 billion euros to renew the fleet. • The use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). These are non-fossil in nature and are produced from industrial or household waste in a circular economy and do not compete with the human food chain. Air France and KLM have been pioneers in the use of these energy sources, which will play a key role in the decarbonisation of air transport, as they reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 80% over the entire life cycle. . Currently, the Group is working to make these fuels more accessible in terms of quantity and price by creating a real sustainable aviation industry in Europe. • The search for greater efficiency in its operations, favoring more direct routes and applying procedures that limit fuel consumption (lightening the weight of aircraft, taxiing with one engine, continuous descent). Air France and KLM set the goal of carbon neutrality for ground operations by 2030.
In addition, Air France-KLM is mobilizing the entire sector and is committed to the research and development of innovative solutions, in the field of aeronautical design and maintenance, engines or synthetic fuels, that allow progressively to achieve a total absence of carbon in aviation.
GOL layoffs in Argentina
Ministry of Labor dictates Compulsory Conciliation
In the context of the conflict between GOL Linhas Aéreas and unionized employees in the Aeronautical Personnel Association (APA) and the Union of Air Navigation Personnel of Private Entities (UPADEP), the Ministry of Labor of Argentina had to intervene which this Monday 02/11 issued a mandatory conciliation to avoid some two hundred layoffs. The unions involved, APA and UPADEP, denounce the arbitrary dismissal of two hundred workers.
As detailed in the resolution of the conciliation determined by the Ministry of Labor of Argentina «it is necessary to have the pertinent measures to promote a peaceful and legal solution to the conflict raised», said Claudio Moroni, conductor of the portfolio. Meanwhile, the conciliation will be of fifteen days, in which the workers will not be able to carry out any measure of force and the company will have to seek a solution to the conflict. As detailed from the unions, the dismissed workers are 170 from APA and 30 from UPADEP and these dismissals have to do with a decision by the airlines to advance with outsourced personnel.
Faced with the dismissals by the Brazilian airline, APA denounced the unilateral and arbitrary dismissal of approximately 150 company workers. «APA had denounced the illegal nature of the dismissals, as well as the highly suggestive, unfair and unethical attitude of the GOL company in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, of sending the telegrams surprisingly, after almost two years of negotiations with APA to maintain the jobs in the worst moments of the sanitary crisis , they maintained from the aeronautical unions. In this context, they denounced GOL’s decision to replace all its personnel with outsourced personnel as of the restart of its flights and the absurd business position of being a judge and a party, by denying the legitimate union representation of APA over the majority of your own staff and assign it to another guild. «APA will abide by the provisions of Article 6 of the mandatory conciliation resolution, where it urges the parties in conflict to maintain the best predisposition and openness to negotiate the issues on which they maintain differences and thus contribute to peace. social and improve the framework of labor relations within the company involved», remarked from the union groups. But they warned that «with the same firmness, APA will continue to exercise, during and after the mandatory conciliation, by all union and legal means, the unrestricted defense of the rights and interests of its GOL Linhas Aéreas affiliates».
Resumption of services
GOL Linhas Aéreas announced the return of its flights to Buenos Aires as of December 19, 2021. Its operations from Argentina operated in Buenos Aires/AEP, Buenos Aires/EZE, Córdoba, Rosario, Mendoza to Sao Paulo and Río de Jan, as well as Florianópolis. The new rescheduling of flights will be carried out with Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with capacity for 176 passengers on international routes. From both Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, GOL Linhas Aéreas will have daily flights to Buenos Aires from 12/19. For Santa Catarina and with a view to the summer season, two weekly flights are initially planned between Florianópolis and Buenos Aires, also starting on 12/19.
Conflict in Latam Argentina
The pandemic also brought conflicts in other airlines such as Latam Airlines Argentina, where the dismissed workers have been carrying out actions and protests so that they fulfill their commitment to work continuity with the laid-off personnel, after the airline decided last year to abandon its operations in the country. “We are asking for labor reintegration within what is the commercial aviation sector. There are minutes of the Ministry of Transportation in which they commit to our reintegration in the field. We have been complaining for almost twenty months, we are not going to get tired and we are going to continue fighting. Now in Latam they are checking flights as if nothing had happened while there were 1,700 families that were left on the street”, said the fired worker Leonardo Ruiz at the march.

Aerolínea canadiense lanza servicio a San Diego (CA)
Swoop launches Edmonton—San Diego
Canadian airline launches service to San Diego (CA)
The Canadian airline Swoop Airlines has inaugurated this Sunday 10/31 a non-stop service between Edmonton (Canada) and San Diego (United States), allowing a new trend to be gained in commercial aviation in the Western United States. The inaccessible Sunday morning flight between Edmonton and San Diego is the first time that nonstop service has been offered between the two cities. It is also the first time that San Diego International Airport has welcomed a new airline since 2018. Swoop’s arrival comes after British Airways resumed service to San Diego in October 2021, and Japan Airlines reactivated its service to San Diego in March 2021. The flight arrived shortly after 11:15 a.m. In the morning, the pink and white Swoop Airlines Boeing 737-800 jet made its way to the gate a few minutes later. Some baggage handlers recorded a video on their phones to commemorate San Diego’s first nonstop flight from Edmonton.
Airport officials said Sunday 10/31 that the number of international flights to and from San Diego has risen to 25 percent from pre-pandemic levels. However, they noted that the number of international passengers is still 90 percent lower because the flights have been significantly less crowded. While San Diego’s tourism economy relies on travelers from around the world, Canada is the # 1 source of international visitors to the region. In 2019, San Diego received about 350,000 Canadian visitors, who had an estimated economic impact of $ 183 million in the region, according to the San Diego Tourism Authority.
Air Canada has resumed its nonstop service between San Diego and Vancouver, but not its nonstop service between Toronto and San Diego. Westjet Airlines offers nonstop service between San Diego and Calgary.
“In San Diego, our priority is getting new air service routes. We anticipate that this route will be popular with more Canadians who want to enjoy our sunny shores and with Sandieguinos looking for a great winter getaway in the beautiful Canadian Rockies”, said Kimberly Becker, Executive Director of the local airport authority.
Swoop, a three-year-old low-cost airline that has never flown to a Californian destination before, begins service between San Diego and Edmonton with one flight in each direction only on Sundays. The airline plans to extend the service to Thursdays in December 2021 and then add Tuesdays next year 2022. “There is a lot of optimism. San Diego is obviously a wonderful market for Edmontonians”, said Speaker Kelsey Trainor.
Swoop announced plans in 2019 to launch the service between San Diego and Edmonton, but that was delayed by the immobilization of some Boeing jets for safety assessments and later by the pandemic. The nonstop flight makes the trip shorter and more enjoyable, adding that before, you had to connect in Denver or Seattle, or fly to Los Angeles and rent a car.
The city is the capital of the province of Alberta. With 1.3 million inhabitants, it is the sixth largest metropolitan area in Canada. Bert van der Stege, Swoop’s Chief Commercial and Financial Officer, said late October 2021 is a common time for airlines to make scheduling changes when moving from summer to winter service. “We are looking for destinations where the sun is shining and the temperatures are a little bit better than what we have in Edmonton”, said Beert van der Stege. Airport authorities said an obstacle to the recovery of international travel is confusion over vaccination requirements and standards for COVID-19 testing, which vary by destination.
Jazeera Airways goes shopping
Conversations with Airbus and Boeing for aircraft orders
Kuwait’s Jazeera Airways is in talks to buy thirty Airbus A320NEO (30) or Boeing 737 MAX (30) in a deal worth up to US$ 2 billion, said on Monday 01/11 the President of the airline Marwan Marzouk Boodai. The low-cost carrier had been hoping to place the long-considered aircraft order.
The airline would seek to increase debt to finance part of the purchases, and the remainder will be financed from the company’s own cash reserves, which currently stand at KD 41 million Kuwaiti Dinars/US$ 136 million Dollars. The disclosure of the aircraft ordering talks comes just two weeks before the start of the five-day Dubai Airshow 2021, which will be this year’s largest aerospace trade show and a show for commercial and military contracts worth billions of dollars. Dollars.
Jazeera Airways, majority owned by the Boodai Group, has for many years considered an order for aircraft to expand and replace its fleet of leased narrow-body Airbus A320 aircraft, although it never placed an order. It currently operates a fleet of seventeen Airbus A320 aircraft (17).
The airline reported on Monday 11/01 a net profit in the third quarter of KD 11.8 million Dinars/US$ 39.15 million Dollars, its first quarterly profit in two years, according to Refinitiv data. «We are confident that travel will come back stronger to reach 2019 operational performance very soon. We now believe that the worst is behind us», Marwan Marzouk Boodai said in a statement.
Boeing I+D investments
American aerospace bets hybrid investments
The Boeing Company has increased its spending since the onset of the pandemic crisis, while it has made some forays into new companies in the space mobility, manufacturing and connectivity sectors. The American aircraft manufacturer has cut its venture capital portfolio to forty new companies in August 2021 in an agreement with the private equity firm of the State of Florida AE Industrial Partners. The agreement has created a hybrid investment approach that allows Boeing and the new AE HorizonX fund to raise additional capital from third parties, while providing startups with a «personalized approach that can be accessed by all of Boeing», said Brian Schettler, partner and head of AEI HorizonX.
The technologies the company is targeting through the fund have not changed, a Boeing spokesman said. That includes a focus on reducing the company’s carbon footprint. Sustainability efforts provide a good example of how investments can complement Boeing company’s internal Investigation Development (R&D) projects. «There is no silver bullet that will solve the problem. It will take partnerships, support entrepreneurship within the industry, and advance a broader ecosystem, and venture capital plays an important role in achieving those goals. Boeing will have to. do that while finding new technologies that can help you scale production efficiently. Boeing knows quite well where you have gaps, where you will need capabilities in the future, and that direct feedback allows us to make informed decisions about which companies we are looking for», said Brian Schettler. The aircraft maker has entered into 34 deals in the past five years, including twelve in 2021.
