AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Aerial Crisis in Venezuela

The situation of the generalized crisis in Venezuela makes predicting an anteroom to the collapse of the airlines and the commercial system

The deepening of the Venezuelan crisis seems to have no floor. Aviation entrepreneurs have had to resort to dollars in the free market to keep some of their fleet aircraft. Many airlines will not be able to support the political situation and will resort to cannibalizing their own aircraft is a necessity in the absence of liquidity for the purchase of spare parts for their aircraft or maintenance of their fleets. Due to the political-economic situation, associations and purchases have arisen from businessmen linked to the government of the day in order to gain access to controlled or preferential currencies.Another government modality in the face of the dearth of preferential dollars was to allow companies that have international flights to be able to sell in US currency, leaving those currencies abroad to buy spare parts for their planes.

Given the regulated prices of the tariffs, rising fuel prices and the inflationary process are eating up the commercial air development and the increasingly delicate subject of the safety in the airplanes put on alert a fleet already several years of antiquity. The aspect of the airport system that now is in the hands of the Venezuelan National State and executed by the military area, has contributed to the lack of means for its maintenance. A \ W

AW | 2017 07 21 21:00 | AIRLINES MARKET

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Argentina an opportunity to fly

With the advent of air-trade opening, flying in Argentina could be a reality for many people

The blast of European emerging markets in the aviation sector have revealed the pros and cons of so-called low-cost low-fare. But there is no doubt that in most markets such as Asia, Europe and the United States, many users have gained significant comparative advantages, while at other times the state has had to intervene because of the inconsiderate abuses of many low-cost airlines.

Argentina, the market has been parallel to an expansion in Latin America, but a little late because of the political protectionism that was subjected to the Argentine air market.

Today 21 July 2017, the directors of Flybondi advance with the negotiations in the city of Bariloche, a destination very quoted in the regional market. Julián Cook, CEO of Flybondi together with Esteban Tossutti, director of Industrial Relations and Governmental Institutions, was in charge of the presentation, and they exposed the projection that this company has in the aeronautical market of Bariloche.

CEO JULIAN COOK OF FLYBONDI

In principle, Cook clarified that «we are not to remove passengers to other airlines but we work with new markets and segments.» «Our objective is that more Argentines can travel, making this action a reality with the handling of costs efficiently, always providing a service of quality and excellence. We expect to have 10 million new passengers flying with us by 2021», he said.

Flybondi.com is the first low cost airline in Argentina, which will start flying from the fourth quarter of this year. It has the authorization to operate 85 routes, among which 43 of them are of cabotage and 42 international, and among the internal is San Carlos de Bariloche.

Particularly for our city is projected to move from the 27 thousand passengers a year that are currently received, to 217 thousand by 2018, reaching 779 thousand in 2021. From Bariloche will start working with the route to Buenos Aires, and by 2019 Is planning to join Córdoba and the international route Bariloche-San Pablo. In 2020 they will annex the Mendoza and Salta destinations.

According to calculations by the company based on ORSNA data, the 779 thousand passengers that are projected to reach from here to five years will imply an income of more than 1700 million pesos in the local economy, between stays, excursions, and other expenses, And the generation of 2200 new jobs, among the 900 jobs associated with airport activity and the more than 1300 jobs with indirect relation.

The objective of this airline, of Argentine origin, is to duplicate in the next five years the commercial aerial market of the country and to transport 10 million passengers towards 2021 with the lowest prices of the market. Within this plan, the creation of 1500 new direct and 20,000 indirect jobs is proposed.

According to the Cawley, there are some variables that account for the potential: a very large territory, a young population in Buenos Aires with ties to the Interior of the country and a government ready to open new markets.

Cawley and a group of investors – like Michel Powell and other entrepreneurs from Argentina, Europe and Asia – spent $ s75 million on Flybondi. The company obtained permits to operate 85 routes in the country and will start with 12 this year.

Its ambitious plan hopes to offer flights for the price of a bus ticket, with which it plans to obtain 20% of the market in the next five years. In this sense, the company projects that the number of passengers quadruple up to 80 million in 10 years.

Michael Cawley, the former CEO of Ryanair and an investor in Flybondi, said that Argentina is «probably the last country where there is an incredible opportunity» for low cost airlines.

«The figures from Argentina show an incomparable opportunity, much better than Ryanair has ever encountered in Europe,» said the former executive of the world’s leading economic airline. A \ W

Revolución del mercado transatlántico

AW | 2017 07 18 12:05 | AIRLINES MARKET

Figure ES-2_full.png

AIRGWAYS ® Icon-AW

Airlines revolutionize transatlantic market

The transatlantic market has been and is one of the main air navigation routes in the world due to the flow of passengers and the strategic importance of America and Europe

The strong market demand in economic flights, coupled with the increase in the participation of the low-cost, have propelled these airlines to position themselves to fly an increasingly tempting market, transatlantic flights.

The airline industry has «encouraged» the needs of passengers and airlines by optimizing the tools available to air operators. Both Airbus and Boeing have developed narrowbodies capable of crossing the Atlantic. When the airlines had larger aircraft, many did not fit the intended route. Only the Boeing 757-200ER fulfilled that role very well. But the age of this aircraft and its low commercial favor has made the airline industry think of a substitute that meets the new goals of the current market in the world.

Transatlantic narrowbodies

Airbus has seen a market gap when Boeing terminated production of the Boeing 757 line. The Airbus A321 was opening up an opportunity for enhancing its capabilities to a larger market. Boeing awoke from its lethargy and developed the Boeing 737-900ER, but its benefits have not reached the expectations for certain trade routes.

The air market was demanding a plane capable of flying with similar or superior performance to the Boeing 757. In the case of Airbus has responded with the A321NEO LR (Long Range) and Boeing with the Boeing 737 MAX.

Resultado de imagen para Boeing 737 MAX Norwegian Air png

Norwegian Air had planned its flights with the new MAXs, but the delays caused the Boeingg 737-800 to make the transatlantic debut awaiting the next-generation 737 aircraft.

Resultado de imagen para WOW A321 pngWith the rollout of the new Boeing 737-8 MAX and the acquisition by Norwegian Air began flying from Europe to the US East Coast in June 2017. Its tickets are approximately half the cost of US airlines flying through Same routes. To Norwegian Air transatlantic flights, the Icelandic airline WOW now offers connections through Reykjavik, Iceland. Thus, low-cost airlines have conquered a captive market for many years with widebodies on transatlantic flights.

norwegian-free-shipping-sale (2)But the reality is that not everything is «rose color». The increased extra costs, mechanics, cabin crew and fuel entering the Atlantic Ocean are causing headaches to Norwegian Air’s growth. The loss of shares of Norwegian Air and the recent departure of its CEO corroborate this reality. Even so, the arrival of Norwegian Air and WOW to America are positive developments in themselves. By innovating on new transatlantic flights, low-cost airlines are innovating with new products, and maximizing the benefits from the west coast of Europe to the American east coast. Airlines are shocking American classic carriers by forcing big airlines like Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines and British Airways to retire or risk losing their dominant market share.

Figure ES-2_fullThe classic airlines opted to respond with air ticket prices towards low are and their fare go in a convincing direction. Of course, the big airlines are not happy with this low-cost market, because behind the scenes, they have been making an effort to prevent foreign competitors from breaking their cozy monopoly.

In April, Rep. Peter De Fazio, Democrat of Oregon, Frank LoBiondo, Republican of New Jersey, and Rick Larsen, Democrat of New Jersey, wrote to the Department of Transportation (DOT) demanding that he refuse the transatlantic permit application to Norwegian Air. They called on the government to stop low-cost demand for the United States. The reality is that their complaints are not based on fair play or open markets. Congressmen simply want to protect United States aircraft from competing with cheaper alternatives.

While Congress’ special-interest business could cloud undersea transatlantic projects, United Airlines lobby chief Todd Insler has also championed the blockade of Norwegian Air. He knows that if cheaper airlines start to underestimate United, his job security is at stake. But while American jobs must obviously worry us, we must ask if the jobs of a few hundred Americans are worth millions of other Americans who pay hundreds of dollars more per flight than they need.

Fortunately, the Department of Transportation has held steady until now to allow Norwegian Air to serve the American people. It is absurd that foreign companies can not offer US domestic air routes. If they were able to do so, they could hire more Americans to crew and maintain their planes, that’s what Norwegian Air is doing in the European domestic market for the transatlantic market.

IAG no sobrevivirá».

AIRGWAYS ® Icon-AW

European Parliament debates over effects of Brexit in aviation

Following the European Parliament’s sections on the Brexit issue, airlines have expressed concern about collateral effects if agreements between Britain and the European Union are not made before time

«In Turkey they do not allow the right to strike in the aeronautical sector, it goes against Resultado de imagen para lufthansa logo pngthe competition,» complains Lufthansa Vice President Thomas Kropp.

Michael O’Leary, President of Ryanair, expressed concern about the significance of Brexit’s impact on the European aeronautics sector at the Brussels Resultado de imagen para vueling logo pngTransport Commission.

IAG, the group of British Airways, Iberia, Vueling, and Air Lingus, and Lufthansa Vice President Thomas Kropp, made the debate organized in the Committee on Transport expressing the deep concern that the departure of the Resultado de imagen para aer lingus logo pngUnited Kingdom from the European Union could generate An adverse effect on the European aeronautical sector. All of them called on the MEPs for vigor and effort to reach an agreement with the United Kingdom on air navigation.

Resultado de imagen para Iberia logo png«I always like to come to Brussels, I spend a lot of time here doing I’m not sure what,» the Ryanair president told the MEPs. «We are an Irish airline, which offers the lowest fare in the markets, an average rate of 41 euros, and we have a plan to reduce them even more,» said O’Leary without losing the opportunity to stick his particular advertising wedge at the beginning Of his intervention. When Willie Walsh, sitting next to him, took advantage of the identity tag stuck in his jacket and try to put it in his mouth, in a gesture that seemed to say, ‘Michael do not pass.’ The chairwoman of the Transport Committee, Karima Delli, could not help but smile.

Due to the effect of Brexit «there will be no flights from 2019 on the part of your company», warned the president of Ryanair. «If the British Government adheres to its current position there will be no free movement and there will be no single sky, the United Kingdom will have to seek a bilateral agreement, but I do not think they will be allowed to enter here again with preferential conditions.» O’Leary said: «Lufthansa and Air France are looking for a business opportunity to end IAG, Easyjet or Ryanair. The Germans and the French always want to do a little punch in the UK.» «From September 2018 when the British voter wants to go on vacation, he will have no choice but to take a ferry and go to Ireland, and I love my country, but I do not think the British population wants to spend their vacations there.»

The president of Ryanair was especially tough with the consequences that will have the Brexit on its competitor IAG. «If we do not have a legal framework to operate flights to and from the UK, travel will be canceled, the Germans and French will love it, IAG’s structure is going to crumble, it will be a huge mess».

The IAG chief executive stressed the need for an open skies agreement between the EU and the United Kingdom as soon as possible. «The EU and the UK should sign a comprehensive air transport agreement, similar to the one that already exists with the US or Canada, which is more open, recognizing a deep relationship between the UK and the EU, and maintaining the consumers».

Thomas Kropp, Vice President of International Relations for Lufthansa, took the weight of his speech on competition between European airlines and the rest. The Brexit, he said, «is a dramatic event for all of Europe, O’Leary has suggested that Brexit was born in France or Germany, but it is not, Brexit will have a tremendous impact.»

«We want an open sky, but that works for everyone, that applies to all, not only to the community, that the rules are the same for all,» Kropp said. «We have serious problems, in countries like Turkey the right to strike in the air navigation sector is not allowed, we have 100,000 workers to whom we can not impose certain conditions, but other foreign airlines do,» he said.

Following the intervention of airline executives in the debate, which can be seen on the website of the European Parliament – which also included Sean Kennedy, Airlines for America, and Ralf Pastleitner, Director of tour operator TUI, and previously managers Of several European airports, the MEPs raised a number of issues for the rapporteurs.

«They will like to know that Michael is not always right, I am convinced that the United Kingdom will remain connected to the EU, it is in the interest of the British, Europeans, and even Ryanair,» Walsh said. The IAG CEO once again called on his answers to questions from parliamentarians for pushing for a bilateral air navigation agreement.

«In the UK they do not know what the hell they want,» O’Leary said. «I do not take Brexit lightly, it’s economic suicide, it will be bad for everyone, until the British realize they do not want to spend their holidays in Ireland or Scotland.» The Ryanair president insisted on his view that for a period of time there will be no flights between the UK and the EU. «There is no possible legal mechanism, if there is no single sky agreement, there will be no flights for weeks or months.»

The representative of Airlines for America, Kennedy, explained the agreements between US airlines and European airports and airlines. What gave rise to the vice president of Lufthansa to remember that it would not be bad that the German airline could enter in the route New York-Chicago «as you do in the EU».

The debate ended with gratitude to the rapporteurs of the chair of the Transport Committee of the European Parliament, who stated that it had been clear that if the executives of the airlines were outside, Brexit would be reversed. A \ W

AW | 2017 07 13 17:13 | AIRLINES MARKET / GOVERNMENT

Aerolíneas Argentinas does not want «open skies»

The president of the flag line, Mario Dell’Acqua, said that all companies will compete on equal terms

Under the watchful eye of the Argentine government, Mario Dell’Acqua emphasized: «There will be no skies open, companies that come will not be able to register planes where they want to, nor use foreign pilots with other standards, they will fly with planes based in Argentina and Argentine workers. An inequity in competition. The rules are clear, they are competitive. « The stage that begins in the aerial commercial market, is clearly marked by the conditions that not only Aerolíneas Argentinas can fix, but it is a clear message of the government of Argentina. The President insisted that he was struck by the fact that the aeronautical guilds warned of the negative impact that greater competition could generate. «It’s weird because it will give them more work,» he said.

«Flying in Argentina is already cheap,» Garcia said, explaining that a comparative study of the lowest airfares that the state authorizes companies and that has not changed since October 2014, are in balance with other Latin American countries. «If companies come to compete, it is because those values are appropriate. We have the most efficient network of connections and, in addition, the social commitment to serve the whole country,» said Dell’Acqua.

Regarding the claim of long-distance bus companies, he said the data show that the plane catches passengers «who used the car before and those who did not travel.» «We want everyone to travel, the most expensive seat for us is the one that is not occupied, the one that is not sold, prices from this city this year fell 20% on average,» they added.

Balance in Aerolíneas Argentinas

Aerolíneas will present their balance sheet; Regularizing its situation since the year 2013 that no data are obtained. The reports will allow to obtain better conditions of financing for the leasing or leasing of more airplanes. They are considering incorporating 8 Boeing 737-800 and an Airbus 330. «We are paying with a lot of sacrifice the 300 million dollars owed to Embraer,» said Dell’Acqua, referring to Austral Líneas Aéreas E-190s.

AIRGWAYS ® Icon-AW

US will review aviation agreements with Gulf countries

In the middle of the Gulf Airlines subsidy dispute, the Trump administration reviews the Open Skies Agreements policy

The Trump government is reconsidering a pair of international aviation agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Qatar on allegations of unfair subsidies by Gulf nations are making their state airlines

The administration is facing mounting pressure from three of America’s biggest airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines, to establish a fairer or more balanced policy on low-priced Gulf companies. US airlines argue that they are acting end-customers against competitors such as Emitares Airlines, Etihad Airways (UAE) and Qatar Airways.

NEC Director, National Economic Council, Gary Cohn, White House Business Advisor Peter Navarro, Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and other senior government officials have been discussing the matter for months. The NEC, the National Security Council, the Department of Transportation (DOT) and other agencies met the previous week for the last strategy meeting on aviation agreements.

The aviation agreement being discussed, called Open Skies Agreements, allows airlines to operate in the US with limited government interference. The United States has signed more than 100 pacts such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Officials of the White House administration warned that they have not yet reached a consensus on the actions to be taken. The options on the table include informal talks with the United Arab Emirates and Qatar to limit the number of flights to the United States or restrict certain routes. Another option is to withdraw agreements with those countries to negotiate better terms again.

Within the US administration differences arise in terms of agreements with different officials. From the government they seem to favor an aggressive approach that includes the renegotiation of the agreements.

Trump, has enforced airline agreements and at the same time eliminated trade agreements that were prejudicial. They believe that taking a strong stance on Gulf airline practices could help fulfill Donald Trump’s campaign pledges.

Piloting the storm
Continuing tension in the Gulf between Saudi Arabia and Qatar only increases the political stakes of any decision on aviation, and makes it less likely that the United States will act in the near future. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will travel to Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia this week to help ease tensions in the region.

«While Gulf companies and their allies want to destabilize the global aviation industry and risk the livelihoods of American workers, we believe that fair-play companies and their employees should have equal opportunity to compete,» said Jill Zuckman , A spokesman for the Partnership for Open & Fair Skies, a commercial group funded by Delta, United, American and several unions representing airline workers. But not all US airlines support rethinking the Open Skies agreements. JetBlue and others have partnered with Gulf companies, and benefit from the growing number of passengers needing to be transferred to US airports that have cheap flights abroad.

They warn that any attempt to renegotiate the Open Skies agreements could have a domino effect, leaving room for other countries to do the same on a larger scale. «What legacy carriers are asking the administration to do would reduce competition and endanger Our entire network of Open Skies agreements and the benefits they bring to American workers, travelers and local economies», said Andrea Christianson, US Airlines spokeswoman for Open Skies, A commercial group funded by Atlas Air Worldwide, FedEx, Hawaiian Airlines and JetBlue that opposes the renegotiation of Open Skies agreements. Gulf airlines also have rejected claims that they are being unfairly subsidized, countering that they contribute billions to the US economy. A \ W

Aumento ingresos aerolíneas en EE.UU.

NB_24LOVEFIELD13SP_44625441.jpg

AW | 2017 07 11 19:29 | AIRLINES MARKET

AIRGWAYS ® Icon-AW

Increase in US airlines revenues

Changes in fares generate higher monetary income for airlines in the US

US airlines are experiencing increased cash flow as more passengers travel more miles, achieving an achievement for the first time in years, thanks to new kinds of rates and personalized services that are squeezing more revenue from each customer.

In the second quarter results had suffered in the middle of a price war caused by low fuel prices and the rapid expansion of discount companies. Big airlines are now expanding «core economy» rates to compete with discount stores, while also leveraging new fare revenue streams and premium ticket classes that offer more convenience and exclusivity. «You’re seeing increasing segmentation of products and customers, which is driving higher average rates,» said Bryan Terry, director of travel and transportation at PriceWaterHouseCoopers.

MG_9102

In the cases of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines show unit revenue gains in the second quarter compared to large falls in that period of 2016. Delta Air Lines expects its first growth without the fourth quarter of 2014. JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines are forecasting unit revenue growth of at least 4% after double-digit declines a year ago. Hawaiian Airlines has forecast a unit revenue increase of up to 10.5 percent. Southwest Airlines reported a 2% growth in 2Q2017, disappointing some investors who expect a higher target.

Positive Expectations
Many industry watchers see last year as a low for airlines, coming at the end of a hot rate war. At that time, the carriers blamed everything for geopolitical turbulence, the strong dollar and overcapacity for their poor performance. Only the southwestern region and Hawaii in the USA. Achieved small unit revenue gains during the second quarter of last year.

Broadly positive results for this 2Q2017 would help put the airline industry on track for its eighth consecutive year of profits in 2017, a record streak in a traditionally volatile industry hit by unpredictable changes in fuel prices, demand and economic conditions Worldwide. The actions of many airlines are operating near their maximum yields for this year. A \ W
