Qantas selects A220/A320NEO
Qantas chooses European builder in narrowbodies sector
Qantas Airwyas has selected the European constructor Airbus Group of the A320NEO family which includes the A320NEO, A321NEO aircraft, as well as the A220 regional aircraft as the replacement aircraft for the long-term renewal of its domestic narrow-body fleet that includes the Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 717.
The agreement consists of a firm order for twenty Airbus A321XLR (20) and twenty Airbus A220-300 (20). You have the option to purchase an additional 94 aircraft for a delivery period of more than ten years, which will include more Airbus A220, A320NEO and A321NEO. In addition, it is in addition to an order for thirty-six A321XLR (36) placed in 2020 for delivery in 2024. Orders would be subject to final approval by the company’s Board of Directors, with a pre-order by the end of 2022 with flexibility at the time and the combination of aircraft of these two families. The current announcement follows a thorough and detailed review by the airline’s engineering, flight operations, customer experience, network, fleet acquisition and finance teams. The airline conducted a detailed assessment of the A320NEO and Boeing 737 MAX families, as well as the small A220 and Embraer E190/195-E2.
The new order has allowed for a change of client, opting for the European manufacturer, thus breaking the dominance of The Boeing Company in the Qantas Group fleet. The agreement adds to Jetstar Airways’ existing agreement with Airbus for more than 100 A320NEO family aircraft (100). This new agreement includes the combination of these two orders to allow the group to use a total of 299 aircraft from the European manufacturer, as required over the next decade for Qantas Airways, QantasLink and Jetstar Airways. Alan Joyce said that he will introduce a new interior and a new flight experience once the new aircraft begin to be delivered. Upon completion of the deal, it will represent the largest aircraft order in Australian aviation history.
«The Airbus agreement has the added benefit of providing continued flexibility within the order, whichmeans that we can continue to choose between all the A320NEO and A220 families based on our changing needs for years to come. The ability to combine ordering from Jetstar and Qantas for the A320 type was also a factor», explained Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas Group.
Winton Project
Qantas Airways had christened the renewal of its national fleet «Project Winton» in honor of the city where the national airline was born 101 years ago, marking this project as a key strategic decision for the future of Qantas Domestic. «This is a long-term renewal plan with deliveries and payments spread over the next decade and beyond, but the equally long lead time for aircraft orders means we must make these decisions now. The combination of small aircraft, Medium and large and the different range and economy of each means that we can have the right aircraft on the right route. For customers, this means having more departures throughout the day on a smaller aircraft and additional capacity at peak times. with a larger aircraft or even more ability to start a new regional route because aircraft costs make it possible», said the CEO of Qantas Airways.
IAG approaches purchase of Air Europa
Purchase of Air Europa of € 500 million Euros
International Consolidated Airlines Group SA (IAG) said this Thursday 12/16 that it agreed to pay € 75 million Euros to break its purchase agreement with the Spanish airline Air Europa. IAG said it will pay Globalia, which owns Air Europe, € 35 million Euros, in addition to the € 40 million break-up fee that was previously agreed upon. The couple agreed that the € 75 million Euros could be applied against any future purchase price, should a new deal be reached for IAG to purchase Air Europa.
The two companies had announced on Wednesday 12/15 that they were discussing an agreement. The Spanish airline Iberia Lineas Aereas belonging to the IAG group, had agreed to buy Air Europa at the end of 2019 for € 1 billion Euros, but the price was reduced to € 500 million Euros after the Covid-19 pandemic left the ground. to the entire travel industry.

In addition to Madrid-based Iberia, IAG Group also owns Vueling in Spain. In November 2021, the UK Competition and Markets Authority said it started an investigation into the deal. IAG also owns British Airways and Aer Lingus.
As part of the agreement announced this Thursday 12/16, IAG has indicated that it has agreed with Globalia to evaluate, before the end of January 2022, alternative structures that may be of interest to both companies and offer significant benefits for their shareholders, customers and employees. IAG CEO Luis Gallego said: «It is very disappointing that we had to terminate the current agreement to acquire Air Europa, but the decision makes sense due to market conditions, the deep crisis resulting from COVID-19 and bearing in mind our desire to maintain a disciplined approach to capital allocation».

Flybondi announces expansion
Flybondi will accelerate growth in Argentina New jobs in the country
The Argentine low cost airline Flybondi Líneas Aéreas has announced plans to expand operations in Argentina with the expansion of its fleet to ten (10) aircraft in the short term as part of the restoration of the economy of air travel. The increase in operations would give rise to 400 new direct jobs, announced this Tuesday 12/14 CEO Mauricio Sana.
After a slow recovery in 2021, as a result of the reopening of air services in December 2020, the company expects considerable growth towards 2023, doubling its fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft to expand its list of domestic destinations. Currently, the airline operates fourteen airports in Argentina and regional services to Florianópolis, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, and Punta del Este, in Uruguay.
“We understand that there is an unmet demand from 41 million people who want to travel. We believe that we can grow from the 2019 figures. In 2019, domestic flights had a record with 16 million tickets sold. As the tickets are roundtrip, we would be talking about 8 million people if no one repeated the trip. In other words, we could be talking about 3 or 4 million Argentines who traveled, out of a total of 45 million. And what are the other 42 million doing?», said Mauricioo Sana.
The airline will create more jobs in jobs linked to commercial aviation, direct and indirect jobs that are being created. Flybondi foresees that this growth plan for the next two years will generate more than US$ 420 million in productive activities nationwide. “Without a doubt, it signifies a great commitment from Flybondi and its investors to Argentina and the commitment to develop a business in a sustainable and long-term manner. This step that we are taking as a company means a great commitment to our country and with the vision that our activity and business will play a fundamental role in the recovery of the national economy”, said the CEO of the low cost Argentine company.
Flybondi currently has a fleet of four Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft with a configuration for 189 single-class seats, while it will add its fifth Boeing 737-800 by January 2022. The budget company will also add new international destinations in 2022 as part of the expansion in South America.

Flair Airlines adds Boeing 737 MAX
Flair orders an additional fourteen Boeing 737-8 MAXs
Canada’s ultra-low-cost airline, Flair Airlines, has announced the lease of an additional fourteen new Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft (14) for delivery by 2023. As part of its expansion in Canada and the region, the company’s fleet the young airline hopes to increase its share of the economy flight market in North America. The new order determines a doubling of your current fleet. The main reason behind the growth of the fleet is the expansion with the incorporation of new routes for the region in Canada, the United States and Mexico.
The airline currently has twelve Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft in service, expecting to have a total of twenty units by 2Q2022, while the additional order of fourteen additional Boeing 737 MAXs will arrive to the Canadian company in 2023, which will increase the airline’s fleet. to thirty aircraft by mid-2023, with a projection of reaching fifty aircraft by 2025.

The airline continues to grow while maintaining the cost and sustainability characteristic of ULCC airlines. The Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft fleet has a configuration available for 189 passengers in single Economy class, offering a 14% improvement in fuel consumption and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions than the predecessor Boeing 737 models.
ULCC positioning
Flair Airlines has been growing rapidly with expansions throughout Canada and recently in the United States and Mexico. The airline is looking to become a considerable low cost/low price airline in the Canadian market traditionally dominated by Air Canada and WestJet.
Flair Airlines plans to use the plane for a variety of purposes. Some of them will be used to expand frequencies on existing routes, although one of the biggest and most general goals with the fleet is to continue connecting dots at existing points on the airline’s route map and expand its market presence. Speaking to the media, Flair outlined the room for growth abroad in markets such as the United States and Mexico, though he highlighted the Caribbean as a new area of interest for 737 MAX jets.
CEO Stephen Jones has expressed his appreciation for the high-density 737 MAX aircraft fleet: «I think the 8-200, which is known as I guess the game changer. The Ryanair variant is a fabulous aircraft and I would love it. bring it into our fleet and I think by the time we get to 50 aircraft, we will have a reasonable proportion of our fleet on the 8-200 variant. But under this order, everyone is still on the MAX 8 aircraft». The MAX 8 200 raises the aircraft’s capacity from 189 seats to almost 200. Ryanair’s planes have a capacity of 197 passengers. The additional seating capacity helps reduce unit costs in operating the aircraft, but comes at the expense of in-plane space for passengers, though not necessarily to lower standards than other low-cost airlines. Ryanair has indicated the success of its MAX 8 200. Flair Airlines could use the fleet to expand its presence and offer even more low-cost travel thanks to the operating economy of the aircraft.
Flair Airlines is in an excellent position to continue to grow and challenge the Canadian market traditionally dominated by Air Canada’s full service and low cost airlines in regional operations such as WestJet, Swoop Airlines, and Sunwing Airlines.

This audit that assesses compliance with the IOSA standard includes more than 900 requirements on the safety and quality management systems of airlines in areas such as organization, administration and control at the corporate level, aircraft operation, dispatch and flight control, operations and maintenance engineering, safety of civil aviation, flight attendants, land and cargo operations.
According to its Director General, Enrique Beltranena, the IOSA standards and recommended practices are developed by specialists from IATA, international organizations and airlines, and are continuously updated. He highlights that IOSA adopts the safety requirements described in the ICAO annexes. It also points out that after satisfactorily completing the audits, IATA issued in favor of Volaris México the renewal of its IOSA registration with an effective date of August 31, 2023, while, for Volaris Costa Rica, the registration was renewed with the date of valid as of June 4, 2023.

The Senior Vice President and COO of Volaris, José Luis Suárez Durán, pointed out that the achievement of this objective for the company would not have been possible without the commitment and dedication of all the ambassadors involved in each of the phases of the project, which has allowed to remain one of the safest airlines in the world and as a benchmark for air transport in the Americas region. The IOSA registry strengthens Volaris’ business strategy and vision, as it places it within a select group of airlines that meet the highest international standards in terms of quality and operational safety. The airline received its 100th aircraft, an Airbus A320NEO, registration XA-VSH, which will connect Tijuana with El Bajío and Cancun, with which it will be increasing its frequencies between 22 and 33 percent respectively.

Singapore Airlines selects A350F freighter
Singapore Airlines (SIA) has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Airbus Group for seven A350F pure freighter aircraft (7). The deal will see the A350F begin to replace the airline’s existing B747-400F fleet in the fourth quarter of 2025. “We are honored by Singapore Airlines’ vote of confidence in the A350F renewing its fleet of freighters. The A350F is the world’s new large freighter and will be unrivaled in its market segment in terms of operational efficiency, lower fuel consumption and CO₂ savings. It is gratifying that Singapore Airlines recognizes the value of the A350F as we build on the strong partnership we already enjoy”, said Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Airbus International Director.
Earlier this year, Airbus received approval from the Board of Directors for an A350-derived freighter designed to meet the impending wave of large freighter replacements and changing environmental requirements, shaping the future of air travel. The A350F will be powered by state-of-the-art, fuel-efficient Rolls-Royce Trent-XWB97 engines.
As part of the world’s most modern long-range family, the A350F will have a high level of similarity to passenger versions of the A350. With a payload capacity of 109 tonnes, the A350F will serve all cargo markets. The aircraft features a large cargo door on the main deck, with the fuselage length and capacity optimized around industry standard containers and pallets.
More than 70% of the aircraft’s structure will be made of advanced materials, resulting in a 30-ton lighter takeoff weight and generating at least 20% less fuel consumption and emissions than its current closest competitor. The A350F will be fully compliant with ICAO’s Enhanced CO₂ Emission Standards which come into effect in 2027.
Singapore Airlines is the world’s largest operator of the A350, with 56 aircraft currently in service on its network. The deal with Singapore Airlines is the third commitment received for the new A350F in the last month.
