After this event, Azul confirmed its interest in consolidating the domestic market and Latam Airlines Brasil is the potential acquisition target, which has been moving the shares ever since.

Vuelos cancelados mal tiempo Charlotte

AW | 2021 06 08 21:10 | AIRLINES / AIR TRAFFIC

Flights suspended bad weather in Charlotte

American interrupts services due to adverse weather conditions

Dozens of American Airlines flights have been canceled, leaving passengers stranded at Charlotte Douglas Airport, in the State of North Carolina, United States. Passengers were stranded between Monday 06/07 at night and Tuesday 08/06 morning, as strong thunderstorms canceled dozens of American Airlines flights, leaving many people with nowhere to go.

Long lines formed at ticket counters as people tried to rebook flights to reach their destinations. Charlotte is one of six major hubs for American Airlines, which has resulted in a domino effect nationwide at many major airports. Meanwhile, the lines for the TSA checkpoints stretched across the main airport concourse and ticketing area. Some passengers said their flights were hours late and had to wait until noon Tuesday until they were able to leave Charlotte. The cancellations on Monday 07/06 were caused by the weather, so airlines are not responsible for putting people in hotels at night. With many hotels near the airport booked, many people were forced to stay overnight in the terminal during the unexpected layover, so the airline was unable to provide blankets, pillows or cribs due to the pandemic issue. Many passengers have been on hold for more than ten hours

American Airlines issued the following statement to its passengers: «Severe weather in the Charlotte area yesterday resulted in multiple FAA ground stops and an extended ATC delay program, causing significant impacts on American’s scheduled operation. Our team has been working around the clock to care for and rebook customers affected by the outage. We apologize for the challenges and are working to get customers on track as quickly as possible».

IndiGo arrastra pérdidas en 1Q2021

AW | 2021 06 06 22:02 | AIRLINES

IndiGo reporta su quinta pérdida trimestral consecutiva

IndiGo_Isologotype

IndiGo drags losses in 1Q2021

IndiGo reports its fifth consecutive quarterly loss

IndiGo, one of Asia’s largest low-cost airlines, reported a larger-than-anticipated loss as passenger traffic contracted with the coronavirus sweeping through India. Interglobe Aviation Ltd, which runs the largest airline in India, reported its fifth consecutive quarterly loss according to the latest reports released this Saturday 05/06, impacted by restrictions on flights due to the pandemic. The company reported a net loss of ₹ 11.47 billion Indian Rupees/US$ 157.43 million in the three months ended March 31, 2021, compared to a loss of ₹ 8.71 billion Rupees a year earlier.

«This has been a very difficult year with our revenues dropping sharply due to COVID, showing some signs of recovery during the December to February period and then dropping again with the second wave of COVID. While we have seen a sharp decline in March to May revenue, we are encouraged by the modest revenue improvements that began the last week of May and continued through June», IndiGo CEO Ronojoy Dutta said in a statement. The Coronavirus pandemic is a great testing period for IndiGo shareholders and staff, Dutta said, adding that the airline was strengthening its core to emerge stronger when the sector recovers from the current situation.

India’s aviation sector is reeling at a loss with air travel paralyzed for several weeks last year. The pandemic has brought many airlines around the world to the brink of bankruptcy, yet the intensity of the outbreak in India has made it more difficult for operators there. The country’s airlines are expected to lose a total of US $ 4 billion this fiscal year, estimated the Aviation Consultant CAPA, similar to their losses last fiscal year through 03/31/2020.

The country’s airlines will need about US$ 5 billion to survive, but only have access to about US$ 1.1 billion through share offerings and other means. IndiGo and Air India Ltd. will account for most of the US$ 8 billion in losses they will continue to face in 2022.

India had been quite robust for airlines for a while thanks to its vast domestic network, although any positivity evaporated with the arrival of a devastating wave of viruses, bringing travel to an abrupt halt. IndiGo said that traffic, measured by passenger revenue per kilometer, fell 29% in the first three months of 2021 from the previous year. It occupied 70.2% of its slots in the quarter, up from 82.9% a year earlier. The airline had ₹ 185.7 billion Rupees in cash and ₹ 298.6 billion Rupees of total debt as of March 31, 2021.

As measures of the impacts facing the country and the airline, IndiGo asks employees to take leave without pay in the coming months. «We have run out of words to describe the state of Indian airlines. But as we have repeatedly emphasized, the industry is on the brink of a precipice. This is true even for airlines with access to large reserves of capital», CAPA said in its India Airline Outlook.

IndiGo had been planning last year to raise up to ₹ 40 billion Rupees by selling new shares, obtaining Board approval in August 2020. It then abandoned the plan in January 2021, saying internal sources of cash would be sufficient to as demand began to recover. That optimism soon collapsed as the India outbreak intensified. The Board is now considering raising capital again to bolster the weakened economic situation of India’s leading budget carrier.

Ryanair apelará por fondos a Alitalia

AW | 2021 06 06 13:22 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

Ryanair will appeal for funds to Alitalia

Ryanair will appeal against funds injected into the new Alitalia

The Irish budget airline Ryanair has requested the appeal against the funds available for the Italian state-owned airline that will replace Alitalia, as the low cost considers it an illegal state support, Chief Executive Eddie Wilson ruled on Saturday 05/06, from the Irish airline. «As soon as this money is injected into the newco, we will take the appropriate measures. We are waiting to see, but it is clear that it is an illegal aid and we will defend our interests by appealing against this umpteenth loan», said the manager.

Italy is close to an agreement with the European Commission (EC) to launch Italia Trasporto Aereo (ITA), which was initially expected to start flying again in April 2021. Under the relaunch, the government plans to inject € 3 billion Euros/US$ 3.65 billion in ITA, which would take over the assets of the old Alitalia. Last week, Ryanair urged the EU to require ITA to bid competitively for Alitalia’s airport slots. Ryanair has made no secret of its interest in collecting Alitalia slots. «I have the impression that there is nothing new, ITA will only be the extension of Alitalia with the same problems seen for decades, money is drained from public resources to an airline that today, like yesterday, will lose money», said Eddie Wilson.

The European Union’s competition body is reviewing past and current Italian state aid to Alitalia, and a decision is expected in the coming weeks. According to EU state aid rules, there has to be economic discontinuity between Alitalia and the new ITA for Brussels (EC) in order to allow Rome to inject the funds into the new Italian airline.

Interjet aproxima acuerdo acreedores

AW | 2021 06 05 16:19 | AIRLINES / GOVENMENT

Interjet Colombia reactivaría programación hacia 4Q2021

Interjet_Isologotype.svg

Interjet approaches creditors agreement

Interjet Colombia would reactivate programming towards 4Q2021

Mexico’s low cost airline, Interjet, continues with an insolvency process amid a market damaged by the global health crisis. According to the Superintendency of Transportation of Colombia, the company ABC Aerolíneas SA de CV According to the Superintendency of Transportation, in charge of Camilo Pabón Almanza, the entity demonstrated that “the accounting does not reflect the real situation of the company and that the foreign company it left the branch in Colombia abandoned, among other serious situations that warrant the beginning of a reorganization process, seeking the recovery and preservation of the company as a source of employment, as well as the normalization of its commercial and credit relations”.

The insolvency or reorganization process aims, through an agreement, to preserve viable companies and normalize their commercial and credit relationships, through their operational, administrative, asset or liability restructuring. Along with these decisions, which could have a different outcome for the airline, the surveillance and control authority also reported a second sanction to the Interjet airline for not complying with the measure imposed in November 2020, in which it was ordered to issue a press release indicating to users the channels and schedules to attend the PQRs and clarify whether the operating permit is in the process of being canceled before the aeronautical authority, as well as implementing a user service plan, among other provisions. “Despite the fact that through Resolution No. 0075 of January 8, 2021, a first sanction of ₱ 219,450,750 Colombian pesos had already been imposed, a new term of 15 business days was granted to prove compliance with administrative orders. However, there was no evidence that this happened, for which the Superintendency proceeded to impose a new fine”, the entity specified.

The airline has so far mainly canceled its operation and just a week ago its board of directors assured that it would seek to submit to Chapter 11 in the United States, that is, the Bankruptcy Law. In addition, the company announced an agreement by its shareholders to enter a commercial bankruptcy that allows it to restructure its heavy debt in an orderly fashion. The commercial bankruptcy, which involves the declaration of the commercial bankruptcy of the company, was approved by “one hundred percent of the shareholders. The objective is to return to the operation of the company as soon as possible, giving priority to the rights of the workers. The decision is part of the orderly restructuring process that will allow the attraction of new investors”, the airline said in a statement.

Interjet, which stopped its operations on December 11, 2020, faces a strike since January 8, 2021 due to non-payment of wages to its workers since at least August 2020. The airline owes more than US$ 25 million dollars in concept of salaries to workers and liabilities around US$ 1,250 million until March 2021.
