UK airlines claim in court

Major airlines take UK government to court over quarantine measures

British Airways, EasyJet and Ryanair have launched a legal challenge to the UK government-imposed quarantine measures for Coronavirus, saying the flawed guidelines will crush the economy. The three airlines say in a statement on Friday 12/06 that the quarantine will have a devastating effect on tourism and the economy in general. Airlines want the government to adopt its previous policy, where quarantine was limited to passengers in high-risk countries.

The quarantine that went into effect on Monday 08/06 requires that all international arrivals that are not covered by a restricted list of exemptions be self-insulated for two weeks. The Government has said that this is to prevent the importation of Coronavirus cases and a second wave of infections that could overwhelm the National Health Service. Airlines said the quarantine should only apply to passengers in high-risk countries, as was the case earlier in the pandemic. «This would be the most practical and effective solution and allows public officials to focus on other more important problems arising from the pandemic, while aligning the UK with much of Europe that is opening its borders in mid-June», they said in a statement. The companies added that they have yet to see evidence on how and when the proposed air bridges between the UK and other countries will be implemented. The airlines said Friday 06/08 that there had been no consultation or scientific evidence provided for the quarantine policy, highlighting several inconsistencies in the approach. «If you are a French or German worker who travels to the UK weekly, you will be exempt, and the government prohibits people from traveling to and from countries with lower infection rates than the UK», they added in the statement.

British Airways, easyJet, and Ryanair launch legal action against ...

Court claims

British Airways, Ryanair and EasyJet requested a judicial review to be heard as soon as possible. The companies contend that there is no scientific evidence of such a severe policy quarantine policy, while the government also prohibits people from traveling to and from countries with lower infection rates than the UK. They also argue that quarantine, under criminal law, is stricter than the guidelines applied to people who actually have Covid-19.

Economic impact

The UK is heading for the worst Coronavirus-induced drop of any major economy, and GDP is expected to drop by at least 11.5% this year, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. A possible second wave of coronavirus would send unemployment to almost 12% in the first quarter of 2021, even if a basic free trade agreement with the European Union is reached, the OECD said on Wednesday. Companies are increasingly concerned about the possibility of a no-deal Brexit, which he warned would be catastrophic for the economy. The UK economy shrank about 20% in April, the first full month of closure, the Office for National Statistics said on Friday.

The requirement applies regardless of whether they are UK citizens or not, and those who do not comply could be fined. The quarantine was imposed after a heated debate on whether it would help British efforts to stop the outbreak or simply remove any hope that the tourism industry will recover after months of closure.

Flyest ingresa concurso de acreedores

AW | 2020 06 10 14:04 | AIRLINES

Flyest enters bankruptcy

Flyest starts creditors bankruptcy process and looks for a new owner

Flyest Lineas Aereas, a regional cabotage airline in Argentina has entered bankruptcy, becoming the first post-pandemic company to enter the orbit of the judicial process.

The regional airline Flyest was created in 2017, making flights between Jorge Newbery Airport to Montevideo and Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz, it became the first airline in the Argentine market to run out of oxygen to continue. The Spanish business group that runs the company asked for the opening of the bankruptcy and is actively moving to find a buyer.

The official plan was to invest AR$ 697 million pesos, have a fleet of 4 CRJ-200 aircraft and generate 120 new direct jobs for Argentine pilots, crew and operators and another 1,000 indirect jobs. The prospects for the Argentine economy were insufficient to take flight. The rise in dollarized costs after devaluations of the Argentine Peso aggravated a panorama marked by the fall in economic activity, added to the suffocating conditions of the health crisis of the pandemic to produce the perfect storm. Currently, the company has a workforce of 39 workers and a single Bombardier CRJ-200.

51% of Flyest belongs to the Argentine businessman Gustavo Cebreiro, who leads a group of ex-managers of the defunct airline Sol Líneas Aéreas. The remaining 49% is in the hands of the Spanish capital Ilai Group, which is based in Valencia and is controlling company of the Air Nostrum airline, which carries out regional flights in the Mediterranean area. His decision is to sell and withdraw from Argentina. It is chaired by businessman Carlos Bertomeu, who recently reported through the Spanish press that Flyest “has resorted to the legal tool of the preventive contest to reorganize the financial situation and seek solutions that allow its survival. The biggest crisis in the history of world aviation caused by the pandemic, has forced the management of Flyest to adopt this decision that is in the same line as many other companies are being forced to make”. Spanish businessmen let go of their particular concern about the situation in Argentina, since the Government did not approve any assistance plan for airlines, unlike what happened in Europe and the United States: “This worsens the situation, because in addition the Argentine government extended the lock on flights until September 1″. Against this background, they highlighted that the company’s management continues to hold meetings with possible interested investors and works on other possible solutions that allow Flyest to survive.

The decision to exit the Argentine market has already been made and does not even tempt the Spanish to the possibility that domestic flights will resume in mid-July 2020 and they do not have to wait until September, as the Ministry of Transport has been insinuating against the claims of companies.

The Ilai Group also has investments in Paraguay, where it owns the Paranair airline, which applies an adjustment plan complicated by the impact of the pandemic and flight restrictions. The group had also been working on a project to operate an airline in Brazil, but now it has kept it on hold until the picture clears up. Meanwhile, in Spain Air Nostrum began to organize an operations schedule that is extended as the authorities relax the restrictions in the post-pandemic. The company received € 120 million in aid from a bank consortium.

Acuerdo Aerolíneas-gremios

AW | 2020 06 10 09:50 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT / AVIATION ORGANISMS

Aerolíneas-gremios acuerdan asignación no remunerativa

Aerolíneas agrees with aeronautical unions

Aerolíneas-unions agree non-remunerative assignment

Aerolineas Argentinas has reached an agreement on Tuesday 09/06 with all the aeronautical unions to advance with the measure of temporary suspensions of around four thousand workers, which will mean for the flag company a saving of AR$ 215 million of pesos. The sources pointed out that it was decided to maintain the purchasing power of the suspended personnel, because the salary was already depreciated by different items, such as per diem, which are not being paid and which according to the agreement represents 10 to 20 percent of the salary.

The measure adopted by the Board of Directors of the Aerolíneas Group, «seeks to protect and preserve all the sources of work, our teams, in the face of the toughest crisis that the aero-commercial industry is going through and which forces us to have almost all of our aircraft on the ground», indicates an internal statement released this afternoon. The agreement reached will govern for 60 days and safeguards the purchasing power of those workers who are suspended, through a non-remunerative assignment, as well as the contribution to social work.

The decision is framed in Article 223 bis of the Labor Contract Law and in the drastic fall in our activity, with a reduction in our income of 97%, and in the emergency situation that the country and the entire world are going through. from Covid 19. The agreement reached will govern for 60 days and safeguards the purchasing power of those workers who are suspended, through a non-remunerative assignment, as well as the contribution to social work.

The document highlights that the company needs everyone’s understanding and effort. In turn, the United Aeronautical Unions, APA, APLA, APTA, UALA, UPSA, reported in a statement that they reached an agreement with Airlines and that through this «understanding the company may carry out temporary non-punitive suspensions during the months June/July to personnel who do not perform tasks during this period as a consequence of the Coronsvirus pandemic, without affecting the workers’ pocket income and ensuring full payment of the Christmas bonus. Again, engaging in a mature dialogue between the parties, the Unions Aeronautics demonstrate that we are part of the solutions that the flag carrier needs to face the serious crisis that aviation is going through throughout the world, without ever resigning the defense of the interests of the represented workers», says the document that carries the signatures of Edgardo Llano, Ricardo Cirielli, Pablo Biró, Cristian Erhardt and Rubén Fernández, general secretaries of APA, APTA, APLA, UALA and UPSA.

Austrian receives government aid

Austrian will receive aid package for € 600 million Euros

Austrian Airlines has announced that it will receive a sum of € 600 million in financial aid from the Austrian Government due to the current paralysis of air transport due to the global health crisis. The aid package consists of € 450 million Euros from the Austrian Government and € 150 million Euros provided by its parent company, Lufthansa Group.

The Austrian Government has issued € 150 million Euros in direct state aid, € 300 million Euros in loans to be returned to banks by 2026 and another € 150 million Euros will be received as a capital injection from the Austrian parent company Airlines, the Lufthansa Group. Previously, the airline expected to need at least € 767 million in aid to restart its operations, but due to the ability to restart flights earlier, Austria reduced the amount required to € 600 million.

At the press conference, the CEO of the Lufthansa Group said: “Austrian Airlines has been and is a fundamental part of Lufthansa Group’s multi-center strategy. Thanks to this rescue package in combination with the improved framework conditions of the Austrian aviation system partners, we are in a position to rebuild the flight center in Vienna after the crisis and connect Austria to major destinations in Europe and in all the world».

As a requirement for state aid, Austrian Airlines has to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% compared to 2005 levels and increase jet fuel efficiency by 1.5% annually. The Austrian government has also established a plan in which traffic should use the railways as a means of travel if the travel time does not exceed 3 hours. The full financial deal is not yet finalized as it is still subject to Lufthansa taking state aid from Germany and approval from the Commission of the European Union (EU).

Gremios-Aerolíneas/Austral aproximan un acuerdo salarial

AW | 2020 06 09 10:48 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT / AVIATION ORGANISMS

Aerolíneas and unions continue tuning salary agreement

The suspensions of 7,500 employees of Aerolíneas Argentinas and Austral Líneas Aéreas are a few steps away from being agreed and approved before the Ministry of Labor. On Monday 08/06 in the morning the salary negotiations continued for the claims of the work suspensions. Representatives of five of the six aeronautical unions met to advance agreements, although it is not clear how much percentage of the pocket salary they will receive, with a floor of 75%. The sixth union, Aeronavegantes (AAA) announced on Friday 05/06 that it had already closed an agreement with the company with which, according to the union, it was possible to preserve the salary of the Cabin Crewmen who will be suspended during this month and next. Aerolíneas did not want to confirm the version of this union. «Only when we finish the negotiations with all the unions are we going to communicate the general result of the process. The goals are not shouted until the ball enters», said company sources.

Aerolíneas Argentinas had announced last week that it would launch the procedure for the temporary suspension of its personnel, within the framework of Article 223 Bis of the Labor Contracts Law, by which suspended employees will receive at least 75% of their salary from pocket, according to the agreement signed (and just renewed) by the CGT with the Argentine Industrial Union (UIA). The company seeks, with this agreement, to obtain savings of AR$ 500 million pesos per month, not so much in the payment of wages, but in the saving of social security payments. Suspended employees will not receive a salary, but a non-remunerative bonus. The only charge that will be maintained will be the contribution to the social work of each union. The agreement must be presented jointly between the company and the unions, which in the case of Aerolíneas and Austral are represented by the six aeronautical unions. The five that have met were APLA (Association of Airline Pilots), which bring together the Pilots of Aerolíneas Argentinas, UALA (Union of Airline Aviators) who represent the Pilots of Austral, APTA (Association of Aeronautical Technicians), APA (Aeronautical Personal Association) and UPSA (Union of Superior and Professional Personnel of Aerocomerciales Companies) that groups the hierarchical ones. The sixth union, the AAA (Argentine Association of Air Navigation), which has finalized the negotiations on Friday 06/06.

Synergy, insufficient resource

The announcement about the merger of Aerolíneas Argentinas and Austral Líneas Aéreas, a measure that sought to save some US$ 100 million a year, has been addressed without considering this exceptional situation, estimating that passenger traffic would take at least two years to complete. recover, and that from there it would take about five more years to achieve positive results.

Aerolíneas perspectives

Aerolíneas has reported that since the start of the pandemic, revenues fell 97%. Aerolíneas has an annual turnover that ranges from US$ 1.7 billion in 2019, but its expenses are, chronically, always higher than its income. Aerolíneas Argentinas faces millionaire losses in 2020 estimated at US $ 900 million dollars as a consequence of the extensive inactivity during the Coronavirus pandemic. The Executive Power has not yet guaranteed the advances of financial aid, although the decision to transfer the funds depends on the Ministry of Transportation.

Protocolo «Flybondi te Cuida»

AW | 2020 06 08 19:02 | AIRLINES

Etapa Check-in

Etapa vuelo

Protocol «Flybondi takes care of you»

Low cost Flybondi presents sanitary security protocol

The budget airline Flybondi Líneas Aéreas has presented this Monday, June 8, 2020 the Health Safety Protocol framed for the next reactivation of domestic flights in Argentina. Flybondi presented its sanitary protocol called «Flybondi te Cuida» aligned with the recommendations of international organizations such as IATA, ACI World and the WHO, in tune with the recommendations of the Argentine Ministry of Health that represent different measures for all stages of the flight. The objective of the airlines in the country is to promulgate the sanitary security protocol for both passengers, crew and ground agents at airports.

“We were the first airline in the country to implement prevention measures on board, even before the period of isolation began. At Flybondi we are very committed to seeking the protection of our collaborators and our clients, giving them peace of mind and security when it is time to resume flight operations. Low cost airlines, like Flybondi, are experts in optimization and efficiency, which is why we were able to adapt very quickly to the recommendations made by international organizations. We also analyze the new demands of our clients to enhance the return, because we know that a large part of those who travel with Flybondi want to plan their trips once the isolation is over. We are ready to fly and we hope it will be possible to start before September”, commented Mauricio Sana, Commercial Director of the company.

The protocol, detailed by the ultra low-cost through a statement, is as follows:

Check-in Stage

The use of a chinstrap or face mask will be mandatory to travel, so they must arrive at the airport with the protection element and use it during their entire stay at the airport and on board. It will be recommended to do the web check-in and download the boarding pass prior to arrival at the airport.

All Flybondi people who work in the check in and boarding area will use security and protection elements. A gel alcohol dispenser will be available at all counters for passenger use. Boarding pass scanners were installed to avoid crowds and social distance will be maintained in the boarding and disembarking process. All luggage must be dispatched and will go in the hold of the plane. For the withdrawal of the same at the arrival airport, the airline will reinforce its procedures so that it is available within a maximum time of 5 minutes after the doors are opened. Also, in the carousel the suitcases will be separated to improve the distance. In the event that it is necessary to transfer passengers in buses to a boarding gate far from the terminal, they will carry the minimum passenger capacity. In turn, they will be sanitized after each shipment. The disembarkation will be carried out respecting the lines to guarantee social distancing.

Flight Stage

The entire Flybondi crew will wear chinstraps, gloves and protective glasses throughout the flight. Passengers must wear a seat belt permanently, and it can only be unbuckled in cases of use of the bathroom. A new on-board sales service was developed that includes a prior process of sanitizing and packaging products (food and beverages). And you can also buy personal protection elements such as chinstraps and gel alcohol. From the Flybondi airline they expressed the importance of noting that all the aircraft in the company’s fleet have an air recirculation system, which renews the air every 3 minutes thanks to its HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, which removes the 99.98% of virus and bacteria particles in the air. In turn, daily thorough sanitation and disinfection of all aircraft will be carried out.

GoAir retiraría flota A320CEO

AW | 2020 06 08 15:30 | AIRLINES

IndiGo to lease two A320ceo from ALC - ch-aviation

GoAir to withdraw A320CEO fleet

GoAir plan to withdraw Airbus A320CEO fleet

GoAir, a budget airline from India has started a plan to deprogram the Airbus A320CEO (Current Engine Option) fleet corresponding to the 200 series variant of this prestigious aircraft. The low cost had started its operations in November 2005 with an A320-200 fleet. The Wadia Group-owned airline currently has A320-214 (12) and A320-271N (43) aircraft totaling 55 units. Progressively since 2016 GoAir has started the stage of replacing the initial aircraft (CEO) with the more modern and powerful New Engine Option (NEO) variant.

The disruption in the airline industry due to the Coronavirus pandemic has not affected GoAir’s plan to withdraw its Airbus A320CEO fleet and is on track, an airline official said. Of the 19 aircraft of this type that the airline introduced in the first phase of the expansion of its fleet, it has dropped six as part of the plan, which aims to reduce costs through fuel savings and a low maintenance rate. «Since these aircraft have already completed their lease term, we had the option to extend or return the lease, so we decided on the latter option. Also, we are already inducing the most fuel efficient A320NEO aircraft, giving us the advantage of costs too», said the GoAir official.

Competitive market

GoAir’s biggest rival, IndiGo, has also announced that it will phase out its A320CEO (104) fleet in the next two years due to the high operating cost over the more modern variant.

The plan to remove the remaining twelve aircraft from the older variant is still underway, the official said that leaving these aircraft from the fleet would have no impact on either the network or the airline’s operations. Correspondingly, the airline has placed an order for 144 A320NEO aircraft in two sections, which will be delivered to it over a period of time. In June 2011, the carrier had placed an order for 72 new A320NEO aircraft valued at around ₹ 32.4 billion Rupees at the then list price. Then, in January 2017, he signed an order for another 72 A320NEO worth ₹ 52 billion Rupees. Deliveries for the first leg began in 2016. «We are currently operating flights on a restricted basis like all other national carriers with a good number of aircraft on the ground. And demand is unlikely to pick up any time soon. even if a full schedule is restored over a period of time to have enough planes to handle the traffic», the official said.

Indian airlines have been allowed to fly on domestic routes gradually since May 25, 2020 after two months of grounding of all operations due to the pandemic. However, the Government has not yet decided on the timetable for the resumption of international services. Before the ban on commercial passenger flights, GoAir had been operating more than 340 services per day to 35 destinations including 27 domestic destinations and eighth international destinations.

Reino Unido extiende cuarentena

Experiential Space @ Heathrow T5 | We Are Pop Up

AW | 2020 06 08 10:08 | AIRLINES / AIRPORTS / GOVERNMENT

Gobierno presiona extensión cuarentena a vuelos internacionales

UK extends quarantine

Government pressures for quarantine extension to international flights

The UK Government is pushing with a two-week quarantine for international flights, a move that British Airways (BA) and other companies say will devastate tourism and destroy any chance that the summer holiday season could trigger a recovery in a depression induced by the current pandemic.

British airlines such as British Airways, EasyJet and Ryanair, have threatened to sue the government for the policy, which takes effect this Monday 08/06, saying that the restrictions will be ineffective in reducing the contagion effect of Coronavirus and threatening to destroy thousands of jobs. Airlines fear the move will cause customers weary of the shutdown to delay bookings just as airlines add capacity. «Even those people who would have thought of going on vacation in July or August are now behind on making reservations since no one really knows how long the rules will last. Being locked up at home for two weeks after a vacation is something that many people really can’t. afford to do», said John Strickland, Director of JLS Consulting in London, who has held senior positions at BA and KLM.

Ryanair, easyJet and British Airways protest with British ...

European opening

With declining virus infection levels in most European countries, governments have eased travel restrictions and are opening beaches in places like Greece, Spain, and Portugal. Airlines are trying to save the summer season when tens of millions of people generally travel. The UK is one of the top 10 tourist destinations in the world and attracted over 35 million visitors last year, spending more than US$ 50 billion.

The prolonged quarantine would complicate British Airways’ plans to resume around 40% of its scheduled flights in July 2020 and compel it to continue spending ₤ 20m per day (US$ 25m), the airline said. EasyJet plans to resume some of its scheduled flights starting June 15, while Ryanair plans to restart the flight on July 1, 2020.

IAG SA, the owner of BA, together with Ryanair and EasyJet have requested by means of a letter addressed to the Ministry of the Interior that the quarantine is stricter than the one applied to people infected with Covid-19, and the exemptions for people who living in Ireland, France and Germany will make it ineffective. «In our opinion, the Government has not been able to identify a valid justification for the general nature of the regulations, more especially given the extremely severe nature of the self-isolation provisions that are applied», the statement said.

Airports impact

At the airport level, London/Heathrow may need to cut a third of its 7,000 employees if the UK government does not promptly indicate when it plans to relax the quarantine rule, Airport Executive Director John Holland-Kaye said on Monday 08/06. Europe’s busiest center has already cut a third of operating costs and management positions, he said.

Government position

James Slack, spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson, told reporters last week that the government wants to work with the airline industry as the UK goes through the pandemic, defending the move as a key part of the strategy to prevent a second wave of infections that could overwhelm the health system and further devastate the economy. Britain has recorded 40,542 deaths, 10% of the world total, although the number of cases and deaths is gradually decreasing, with 77 deaths reported on Sunday 07/06. «The science is clear that if we limit the risk of new cases being brought in from abroad, we can help stop a devastating second wave. We all want to get back to normal as quickly as possible, but this cannot be at the cost of life», Interior Secretary Priti Patel said in a statement.

Without Union-Aerolíneas agreements

Aerolíneas and unions of United Unions continue without agreements

Trade unionists representing the aeronautical unions of Argentina reported on Friday, June 5, 2020 in a joint statement before a new proposal that has reflected progress on the original offer of the previous meeting, it is necessary to make several corrections. The five union organizations that make up the United Trade Unions also failed to reach an agreement in this second meeting planned for this 06/05 with the authorities of Aerolíneas Argentinas, so negotiations will continue next week, while the Cabin Crew Passengers (TCP) agreed that there will be no salary reductions during the June and July 2020 period.

The leaders of the unions APLA (Pilots), APTA (Technicians), UALA (Pilots nucleated in Austral Airlines), UPSA (Superior Personnel) and APA (Aeronautical Personnel) and could not reach an agreement in the context of Article 223 Bis of the Labor Contract Law (LCT). The unions explained that the new proposal «has flaws in the exercises of liquidation of assets, errors in the drafting of the model agreement and does not guarantee the payment of the entire half bonus», among other issues. They rejected the signed agreement, in addition, the Argentine Association of Aircraft Manufacturers (AAA) led by Juan Pablo Brey.

The dialogue table with the unions was installed on Tuesday 02/06, after the flag line announced the decision to suspend 8,000 workers in the face of the global Coronavirus pandemic, which caused a 97% reduction in ticket sales. In the first round of meetings, the company proposed to implement the agreement between the CGT and the UIA, validated by the government and extended and approved today, based on Article 223 Bis of the LCT, which authorizes temporary massive suspensions with wage cuts of up to 25% of assets. «The unions ratify their willingness to dialogue and to continue negotiations and clarify that workers are part of the solution and not part of the problem», said a statement signed by Pablo Biró (APLA), Ricardo Cirielli (APTA), Edgardo Llano ( APA), Cristian Erhardt (UALA) and Rubén Fernández (UPSA), expressed the Press Secretary of this union, Marcelo Uhrich. The unions demand that the company’s decisions do not affect working and salary conditions and on Tuesday 02/06 they objected to several points of the proposal. The union spokesmen indicated that the negotiations will continue on Monday 06/08, perhaps in person. «The acceptance of the current proposal would imply receiving 30 percent less of the next Christmas bonus, which would benefit the company in AR$ 300 million pesos. There are active workers and they did not collect per diem and the food voucher. About 3,000 employees comply tasks in operational control, ramp, systems and maintenance. In addition, the company has not yet made any offer regarding the coverage it will propose in the form of teleworking», concluded the aeronautical unions.
