AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Azores Airlines flying over the difficulties

Azores Airlines has been the victim of pressures that include rising fuel prices and pressures from foreign companies. The airline competes face-to-face with Irish low-cost airline Ryan Air and Portuguese national carrier TAP Portugal on routes to Portugal from São Miguel and Lajes.

Azores Airlines, originally SATA International, was formed in 1941 and has served as the main transport of the island to and between the Azores. The international arm of the airline operates together with the regional branch SATA Air Açores, which operates propeller aircraft between the islands, and multiple travel and holiday companies that help travelers build their perfect getaway. The main international arm of the SATA Group, Azores Airlines continues to fly in financial difficulties.

Despite using an aging aircraft fleet at a time when fuel prices were high and demand for leisure was low, SATA managed to stay afloat despite the huge losses experienced by the Portuguese economy during the financial recession. The airline would eventually seek to replace the older Airbus A310 with the new Airbus A321NEO and A321LR. The airline silently withdrew its last A310 on 15 October 2018, with the Airbus A321. The airline has also made some restructuring of its air fleet by eliminating two Airbus A320 and A330 service due to budget cuts.

Hoping to captivate the crowds and return to profitability, SATA International made in 2015 to change its brand to Azores Airlines for a better recognition of its name. The new name of the airline would appear on two Airbus A330s that the airline would take in 2015 and use for flights to North America and Portugal. The oldest air structures have adhered to the name SATA, while the new deliveries, including the Airbus A321NEO, are called the Azores. Despite changing the name of the main operator, SATA Group would allow the SATA Air Açores regional arm to continue using the SATA name and brand.

Despite the fact that the change of brand caught the attention of the operator, Azores has not yet recovered and is now in debt of US$ 250 million. The airline has seen promises with accounts such as cash and accounts receivable that made small profits between the 2016 and 2017 operating years, but at the same time, the airline would see an increase in liabilities from US$ 94 million to US$ 133 million. in the same period. The carrier has also successfully improved the transported passengers from 1.8 million to 2.4 million between 2015 and 2017.

As the airline continues to seek to reduce costs, it can resort to eliminating the Airbus A330 from the fleet to lease larger aircraft for specific peak seasons. Azores has rented Airbus A340 from HiFly and Plus Ultra Airlines in the past, and by withdrawing the A330 from the fleet, the airline can operate a smaller fleet of narrow-body Airbus aircraft. In addition, the A321 already has the range to cover both North America and Europe and would consolidate maintenance and operating costs for the operator with cash shortages.

While the inter-island operator continues to succeed as the lifeline between the islands, the largest international brand in the Azores is looking to find a good step after years of difficulties. The airline’s newest fleet and cost reduction plans have left the airline in a better state than before during the beginning of the decade, however, it is likely that more changes will be seen as the brand continues to connect «The Atlantic and You». Paritarias en Aerolíneas/Austral

AW | 2018 10 26 19:32 | AIRLINES

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Parities en Aerolíneas / Austral

The aeronautical unions close parity with rise of 40.5% of salaries

The Aeronavegantes Guild of Aerolíneas Argentinas and Austral Líneas Aéreas reached an increase in line with official inflation. The parity (paritaria*) discussion between Aerolíneas/Austral and the six aeronautical guilds remained stalled until Thursday night. In this context, which is added to the adjustment of another airline crisis, business sources of the sector did not rule out that some of the unions begin to apply force measures.

Aeronavegantes Aerolíneas Argentinas and Austral received a salary update for the activation of the trigger clause tied to inflation for which they reached a salary increase of 40.5%. From the Argentine Association of Aeronavegantes (AAA) that leads Juan Pablo Brey confirmed the amount after the official inflation of September reached 6.5%. 40.5% includes the 2017 negotiation, plus the accumulated trigger clause that was activated from the inflation of the month of May and until the end of the September agreement included. In this way, the stewardesses, board stewards and flight attendants of the flag carrier managed to match inflation, a situation almost unprecedented in the joint agreements signed this year. The possibility of not losing purchasing power occurs because the union closed a wage pact tied to the official inflation of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC).

From the Syndicate of Airnavigators expressed: «With this salary recomposition, we show that this leadership defends the purchasing power of its workers, which means a differential improvement since the wage level is maintained in the midst of a very complex juncture». A\W

Internal scam on Aerolíneas

Aerolíneas Argentinas has been scammed with bonuses in Human Resources

The Argentine Justice will prosecute two employees of Human Resources of Aerolíneas Argentinas for embezzlement of public funds when liquidating extra charges in their area and eight other workers, to whom they demanded 50% return. Thus, they charged AR$ 9 million pesos  more. Among the defendants there is a union delegate.

At least ten employees of Aerolíneas Argentinas were separated from their posts after it was discovered that they charged AR$ 9 million pesos over the last three years behind the company’s back, in self-liquidating bonuses. The scam, which was detected after an internal audit, was detected as a result of an extraordinary control of the area of Human Resources, which was carried out on the basis of the joint venture that takes place these days.

The scam was carried out by means of an employee of the Human Resources area who liquidated himself and nine other employees his own salaries, to which he added an application of a code that allowed him to add bonuses. Then, I deleted the system procedure. Those involved are another employee of the Human Resources area and another eight workers who did not intervene in the liquidation, but charged the bonuses. Each of these employees had to give «a return»: half of the extra money was returned to the liquidator, through bank transfers made from their own salary accounts. Since last Tuesday, workers are prohibited from entering Aeroparque, where the company’s headquarters are located. The next step will be to formalize a complaint to specify sanctions for those involved. A \ W

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Gol Linhas Aéreas modifies isologotype

Gol Linhas aerial modifies its corporate image to avoid name conflicts

Gol Líneas Aéreas changed its logo to avoid a conflict that was occurring in countries not familiar with the airline. In knowledge of the linguistic expressions of the people who did not know the company they mistakenly exchanged the name of «GOL» for «GOOL», giving rise to a mistake of brand identification. The visual identity of the company has the GOOL identity mark (with two letters O), on account of the second that has the shadow function of the first letter O. The first change will be made in a whitening in the gray of the second letter O of the brand. Although it will not be so noticeable to the naked eye, the change is due to a better identity of the airline.

Due to this conceptual error of identity, the company has retouched its logo to establish a better quality of corporate brand identification. Gol Linhas Aéreas will incorporate the visual image change in the company, introducing the next Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft with PR-XME registration, which is located at the Boeing facility in Renton, Washington, United States, to be incorporated shortly. the Gol Linhas Aéreas fleet with the renewed isologotype that was introduced in 2015.

The change of image will gradually produce the new identity in the entire Boeing 737 Next Generation and MAX fleet, although for this it will be necessary to eliminate the two styles of logo that are still contemplated in the fleet of the low cost airline in Brazil. A\W

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Changes scheme fleets of AR / AU

aerolineas-argentinas.jpgThe Aerolíneas Group has informed the offer on the sale of Embraer E190 of Austral

In a statement from the company Aerolíneas Argentinas, they informed that 20 offers were launched for Austral Líneas Aéreas to have, since 2019, more extensive aircraft with 190 seats. Austral Líneas Aéreas today took the first step to renew the Embraer fleet composed of 26 E190-100AR 96 pax aircraft, receiving twenty offers for larger aircraft from both direct manufacturers and leasing companies.

The renewal of the Austral fleet points to a replacement of units by larger aircraft to absorb the growing demand by acquiring new aircraft of 190 seats. The proposals would involve the total or partial renewal of that fleet.

The companies interested in providing the aircraft for the replacement of the fleet replacing the Embraer E190-100AR aircraft were opened in a ceremony held today at the headquarters of the airline group company, in the city of Buenos Aires. The suppliers for the fleet replacement of Austral Líneas Aéreas have a range of twenty companies interested in the renewal of the fleet: AerCap, Airbus, Aircastle, Air Lease Corporation, Aviation Capital Group, Avolon, Azorra, BOC Aviation, Boeing, CFM, Embraer, Falko, GE Capital Aviation Service, Jet Trading and Leasing, Macquarie, Nordic Aviation Capital, Pratt & Whitney, Regional One, SMBC Aviation Capital, Willis Lease.

Austral Líneas Aéreas has 26 Embraer 190-100AR aircraft acquired from 2010 from the manufacturer Embraer through financing with BNDES Bank of Brazil, of which 22 are owned and 4 are under leasing.

The offers will now be analyzed in detail by the company, to present them to the Board of Directors, which should be the one who takes the final decision on the operation. As part of the process, Austral will dispose of the Embraer aircraft, partially or totally, according to a schedule to be determined.

Feasibility study

The renewal of the Austral Líneas Aéreas fleet of the Embraer E190-100AR regional aircraft will require a study and approval by the Aerolíneas Group Board. The CEO of Airlines, Luis Malvino said: «The renewal of the Austral fleet is an important step that aims to improve the competitiveness of our company in the context of a market that will continue to grow and is challenging. All of us who work in the company must put our effort to make this project come true».

Claudio Encinas, who is the Economic and Financial Director of Grupo Aerolíneas, said: «It is a milestone in the history of Austral, we are very happy for the excellent response and participation. It’s not just that there were 20 offers, but the quality of the firms that made them».

In the past in the era of Spanish capital of the Marsans Group, the synergy of the Aerolíneas Group to unify both airlines was aimed at the homogeneity of the fleets, although something was made effective by contemplating the entry of Boeing 737-200 brought from France to the fleet of Austral Líneas Aéreas, they soon became outdated and uneconomical. The replacement was very necessary to reduce the operating costs of the airline.

AW-70000191AUSTRAL LÍNEAS AÉREAS HAVE A FLEET OF 20 EMBRAER E190-100AR

Currently, the fleet replacement decision has several factors such as the cost of acquisition, bank leasing, crew training, stock of spare parts, training in the technical area, as well as a minor detail the sale of the Embraer E190-100AR. Another aspect in the fleet replacement is the terms and working conditions with the aeronautical unions, under which conditions new agreements will be established for the operations of the new aircraft.

The Aerolíneas Group Board will determine which type of aircraft Austral will incorporate Air Lines into its fleet, but we can deduce that if they are in the range of 160 seats, there will be more likelihood of incorporating Boeing 737 Next Generation or MAX aircraft, thus reducing the cost operation and the homogenization of Aerolíneas/Austral.

AW-7008554444.pngFleet of Aerolíneas

In contrast, in the case of Aerolíneas Argentinas, CEO Luis Malvido closed talks with the Airline Pilots Association (APLA) to renew their latest Airbus A340-200/300 aircraft, which will be out of service by October 2019. Although the Aerolíneas Group had conditioned the renewal of these two planes, which cover international routes, the aeronautical union agreed to change some clauses of the collective bargaining agreement, but there was no progress. On the other hand, the opposite occurs with Union of Airline Aviators (UALA), the guild that brings together the pilots of Austral Líneas Aéreas, where there is an open dialogue. As soon as he took over from Mario Dell’Acqua, Malvido proposed to all the aviation associations the cession of some clauses of the collective bargaining agreements, in exchange for investing in new aircraft. In August 2018, the CEO had intimated to the airlines’ guilds, and in particular to APLA, that in 60 days they would respond to their claim to move forward with the renewal, stating that if the company wants new airplanes it is necessary to use them more efficiently.

In the case of Aerolíneas Argentinas, the issue of fleet replacement is more complicated due to union issues that do not reach an agreement between fleet replacement and renewal of working conditions. The union theme is still crucial, although from the airline are optimistic with open dialogue, but argue that it should be fruitful. But they maintain that the case of an agreement has not arrived, the fleet of Airbus A340 aircraft will go without replacement.

Aerolíneas Argentinas is in the process of renewing the international fleet, so it is a priority to establish criteria to plan the incorporation of newer aircraft. The international line fleet of the company Aerolíneas Argentinas consists of 10 Airbus A330-200 and the last two Airbus A340-300. The latter will end their useful life in one year and will be returned to the lessor. Although the two planes will not have an immediate replacement, in Airlines they say that there is still room for medium-term investments. A\W

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

United Express returns for logistics

A United Express flight from Chicago to Tennessee resumes due to lack of logistics

Flight UA5277 on October 16, 2018 under United Airlines partner SkyWest Airlines, took an unexpected turn after the flight crew informed the 50 passengers that their plane had to return to O’Hare International Airport in Chicago for lack of logistical support at the airport of arrival for the type of aircraft in which they flew.

The commander of the Embraer E175 with 76 seats had informed the passengers that the aircraft was too big to land in Chattanooga. The passengers had undergone a last-minute change of aircraft before the initial takeoff that was attributed to a mechanical problem. FlightAware records show that the plane took off at 2:45 pm and had to land at Chattanooga Lovell Field Airport. The Embraer E175 returned landing in Chicago at 04:19 pm. After a brief delay, the passengers were told that they would be transferred to a different plane.

The crew statement stated: «We are sorry to return to Chicago, Chattanooga Airport can not help you with the ground operating requirements for your current aircraft type, we assign a new airplane to your flight». Customers were relocated on another flight with a different aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ-200 50 seats. A \ W

Andes reduce su capacidad aérea

AW | 2018 10 24 01:00 | AIRLINES

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Andes reduces its aerial capacity

Andes Líneas Aéreas is restructured by reducing its air capacity

Andes Líneas Aéreas is restructuring by shrinking its fleet and suspending routes. The sad news that affects the only important airline in the Northern Region of Argentina is restructured to avoid entering economic turbulence. From the airline argue that the measures are part of a restructuring of its business plan under the changes that have been recorded in the Argentine commercial market, the economic impact and the increase of the dollar.

With this somewhat tight picture, the airline Andes will divest four Boeing 737-800 aircraft and stop flying to Tucumán, as part of a plan to reduce its operating structure. In this way, of the 10 planes that the company had, it will start operating with only six, all of the McDonnell Douglas fleet, a branch of the line acquired by Boeing.

Economic impact

The impact of the higher cost of the dollar that directly affects the cost of renting the aircraft is added to the dollarized cost of the fuel value. «We are adapting to a market that has undergone variations with the dollar firing and in order to continue making viable the operation of the company against the economic variables that are being recorded», said Bernardo Racedo Aragón, Commercial Manager of Andes Líneas Aéreas.

In the world of the «Aircraft Revolution» the greater competitiveness and an adverse economic scenario is causing an involution in the commercial air expansion. In these days Aerolíneas Argentinas announced that the zero deficit will not be reached in 2019; although the advances in concepts of subsidies, now called Capitalization Advances, will be necessary for the Aerolíneas Group to continue flying healthily. The month of October 2018 Aerolíneas Argentinas/Austral Líneas Aéreas will need US$ 180 million of injection to the capital of AR/AU. Meanwhile, from Latam Argentina Airlines, which is subsidized by the multinational, supports the deficit with integrity. The case of Andes Líneas Aéreas, the problems that accused it, voluntarily self-financed, so that resources do not come from elsewhere than from the same company.

Reduction in Andes

The greatest impact that affects the airline from Salta is the low demand of charter flights. The jump that struck the dollar caused that the trips to the outside diminished in an order of 60-70% in general, reason why Andes desprogramó for the season of summer 2018-2019. With this present scenario, the company will return four Boeing 737-800 aircraft to its leasor and will suppress the Tucumán destination.

«We had specifically brought four Boeing 737-800 to support those charter flights, because they were cheaper than the MD-83 and with greater capacity and that’s why we programmed them from Monday to Friday for cabotage flights and weekends for charter flights, with which we supported the costs of renting the planes», said the Commercial Manager.

The fleet of nine aircraft will be reduced to five aircraft, which translates into 40% less workforce, 40% less structure. Of the 400 flights that the airline had, it currently operates 100. «We had specifically brought four Boeing 737-800 to support those charter flights, because they were cheaper than the MD-83 and with greater capacity and that’s why we programmed them Monday through Friday for cabotage flights and weekends for charters, which supported the costs of renting the aircraft. When the number of charter flights decreased considerably, this equation became very complicated for us, so we decided to face what we have programmed with the MD-83 that are ours and do not have an extra cost for what ultimately end up being, today, more economical. We also stopped flying the route that made Buenos Aires-Tucumán-Salta because it was one of the The last ones were opened and we had the need to reduce frequencies, but we will keep the rest and we do not rule out the incorporation of another MD-83», said the Commercial Manager of Andes Líneas Aéreas.

Andes is in a process adapting to the Argentine market, at the time of growth the company expanded, advanced and consolidated; at present the airline of the Province of Salta takes two steps back, but still recognize that they are better than when we started our expansion process.

«This revolution of the planes that the Government started will have, until the next two or three years, a great expansion with many more passengers flying in Argentina, but there are still many variables that can be given. What is certain is that Andes wants to be there when that happens», concluded Bernardo Racedo Aragón. In this way, with the five McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft that will remain operational, Andes Líneas Aéreas will continue flying to Jujuy, Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Córdoba, Iguazú, Bariloche, Puerto Madryn and Comodoro Rivadavia.
