Prohibitions of the MacBook Pros notebook FAA on board flights

The US airline security regulator, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), has banned certain MacBook Pro laptops on flights after Apple Inc. recently said some units had batteries that posed a fire hazard.

In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States said it was «aware of the recalled batteries used in some Apple MacBook Pro laptops» and said it alerted major US airlines about the recall.

Airlines that follow the 2016 safety instructions for products with batteries removed from the market must include the affected Apple laptops on the list, they should not be taken on flights as cargo or in hand luggage by passengers. The European Union Air Safety Agency (EASA) issued a warning about these MacBook Pro models in early August 2019, telling airlines in the region to follow the rules that require devices with lithium-ion batteries removed from the market turn off and do not use during flights.

The Apple laptops in question are a 15-inch MacBook Pros sold between September 2015 and February 2017. Apple issued the recall in June 2019, saying it had «determined that, on a limited number of previous-generation MacBook Pro 15-inch drives, the battery may overheat and present a fire safety risk».

This week, four airlines with cargo operations managed by Total Cargo Expertise: TUI Group Airlines, Thomas Cook Airlines, Air Italy and Air Transat, implemented a ban preventing laptops from being transported to carriers’ planes as cargo.

A spokesman for TUI Group Airlines said airport staff and hostesses will begin making announcements about these MacBook Pros at the door and before takeoff. Laptops that have replaced batteries will not be affected, the spokesperson said. The company also posted a notice on its website that prohibits computers recalled on board the market, both in the cargo and passenger areas of its aircraft. It is not clear what efforts will be made, if any, at US airports.

«Customer safety is always Apple’s top priority, and we have voluntarily decided to replace the affected batteries, for free», Apple said in a June 2019 statement. Once new batteries are installed in laptops, customers They can fly freely with computers.

According to a Canadian June notice, about 432,000 MacBook Pros sold in the United States were included in the recall. Approximately 26,000 units sold in Canada were also affected, while the number sold in Europe has not been disclosed.

The MacBook Pro is not the first consumer technology device to be excluded from airlines. In 2016, the Samsung Electronics Co. Note 7 was banned on US flights due to a fire hazard after the phone’s battery exploded in multiple incidents. Recently recalled laptops such as those of HP Inc. may also be prohibited by FAA rules. While there have been repeated incidents of phones, laptops and other devices that overheated and caught fire in the passenger compartments of the aircraft, a fire has never spread. The flames can be extinguished with water and flight attendants are trained to address it. There have been at least three accidents, two of them fatal, on cargo airlines since 2006 in which lithium batteries were suspected to help spread fires. Tighter rules on shipping have been introduced since then.

In a tweet of July 10, 2019 after an incident involving a MacBook, the FAA said «batteries recalled do not fly». US aviation regulations prohibit transporting recalled batteries on flights unless they have been replaced or stored in a special package that inhibits fires, in accordance with FAA guidelines on hazardous materials. Revisión FAA tras accidentes 737 MAX

Image result for U.S. Secretary of TransportationAW | 2019 08 13 17:40 | AVIATION SAFETY / AVIATION ORGANISMS

descargaUnited States Department of Transportation requests FAA inspection after Boeing 737-8 MAX air accidents

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Lan Chao says she has asked the new Chief of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Stephen Dickson, to evaluate the agency’s performance after the two fatal accidents of the Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft. The FAA Chief reiterates the position of his predecessor, the FAA Acting Chief, Dan Elwell, that the 737 MAX «will not fly in commercial service until he is completely satisfied that it is safe to do so. The FAA is not following any Timeline to return the plane to service».

Federal prosecutors, the Inspector General of the Department of Transportation, Congress and several panels are investigating how the FAA certifies new aircraft. In July 2019, the Head of the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the agency would make recommendations on FAA aircraft certification procedures at the end of September 2019.

While the FAA oversees Boeing’s efforts to review and replace the program in dozens of planes, critics have questioned how the agency managed to ignore the defects in testing and certification of the 737 MAX that happened in 2017.

737 MAX Program

B737-8MAX.jpgThe Boeing 737 MAX has been inactive worldwide after the accident of an Ethiopian Airlines flight in March 2019, and before the October 2018 accident for Indonesia’s Lion Air. Boeing stopped the assembly and delivery of the series of aircraft, for which it has an order book of more than 4,600 aircraft, and the Federal Aviation Administration, the European Air Safety Administration and other civil aviation regulators, as well as Commercial airlines have suspended the service aircraft.

Hundreds of 737 MAX scheduled flights have been canceled every day until November 2019, including American airlines American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines have planned the resumption of flights for the first months of next year (1Q2020).

Boeing has indicated that the accidents were caused by a Maneuvering Feature Enhancement System (MCAS), also known as «Anti-loss» software, developed to compensate for a side effect of the more fuel efficient engines adopted for the new version of the Boeing 737: due to the larger size of the engines, the aerodynamic behavior of the aircraft is altered, and the MCAS is destined to counteract a balancing trend.

Prospects

Boeing officials estimate that the company will complete another 737 MAX software update in September 2019, following the news that the Federal Aviation Administration has identified an additional programming error that will be resolved through the ongoing software update.

It was recently reported that the FAA caused a Boeing to modify the planned revision of the flight control software to correct an error discovered and reported in June 2019, after testing a previous software revision. Neither Boeing nor FAA have confirmed the change, which has been reported citing company sources. «The FAA review and process to return the 737 MAX to the passenger service is designed to result in a comprehensive and comprehensive evaluation. Boeing agrees with the FAA’s decision and request, and is working on the required software», declared the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in July 2019. A \ W

562FAA argues that Boeing 737 MAX aircraft will fly again when they are completely safe

The Chief of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Stephen Dickson, has reported that Boeing 737 MAX aircraft will fly again when they are completely safe to return to the skies. «This plane will not fly again in commercial service until it is completely certain that it is safe to do so. The FAA is not following any timeline to return the aircraft to service», FAA administrator Stephen Dickson said during a ceremony oath in Washington, DC on Monday, August 11, 2019.

Boeing 737 MAX aircraft have been grounded by aviation officials since mid-March 2019, as the company faces the consequences of two plane crashes that killed 346 people in their entirety. Lion Air flight JT-610 crashed on October 29, 2018 after takeoff in Indonesia. Investigators noted that a malfunction in the MAX 8 jet’s flight control system, known as MCAS, caused the plane’s nose to push down before it sank into the Java Sea, killing 189 people. The same software was involved in the Ethiopian Airlines flight ET-302 accident that killed 157 people on board on March 10, 2019.

The FAA administrator said it will continue to be a security-driven organization that works together to retain and restore the confidence of the American people. «We are going where the facts lead us and we diligently ensure that all technology and training are present and correct before the plane returns to the service», he said.

US DOT launches new guide on emotional support animals

5JrvMSb4.jpegThe efforts of the airlines to take strong measures against travelers who abuse the Emotional Support Animal Policies (ESA) got help from the federal government on Thursday, August 8, 2019 after U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) officials published their final statement on ESA priorities.

DOT announced that airlines do not violate U.S. federal law if they ask travelers for documentation related to animal training or behavior, as long as «it is reasonable to believe that the documentation would help the airline determine if an animal poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others».

The airline industry applauded the DOT decision. «With more than a million passengers bringing ESA on flights last year, airlines and airports saw a sharp increase in incidents such as biting and transporting untrained animals», Airlines for America (A4A) officials said in a statement. , an airline trade association.

In one of the most recent incidents, a flight attendant from Envoy Air required five points two weeks ago after an emotional support dog bit him during an American Airlines flight from Dallas/Fort Worth to Piedmont Triad. The Association of Flight Assistants has been pressing DOT to strengthen ESA standards. «We’ve had a big problem with too many animals on our planes. We’ve been begging DOT for this guide and we want to see even more. We want to see this as a clear rule for everyone in the industry», said AFA President Sara Nelson, Thursday.

According to the DOT, airlines will continue to be subject to enforcement measures if they prohibit specific breeds of dogs on board flights. They are working on a longer-term plan to ensure that «dogs as a species are accepted for transport», according to the DOT. This guide seems to go against a controversial addition to Delta’s ESA policy a year ago to ban «pit bull dogs» as service animals. «Delta continuously reviews and improves its policies and procedures for animals on board as part of its commitment to the health, safety and protection of the rights of clients with disabilities. In 2018, Delta increased its service and support policies to animals to reinforce our fundamental value of putting safety and people first, always», Delta officials said in a statement.

Airlines will have a month to change policies that do not meet DOT guidance, but department officials did not specify which airline policies would have to change. A \ W

Boeing-Logo.svgThe FAA could lift security restrictions on the Boeing 737 MAX from 4Q2019

The CEO of The Boeing Company, Dennis Muilenberg, sticks to the fourth quarter timeline for the return of the Boeing 737 MAX service. The Boeing CEO has reiterated his expectation that the company will deliver the updated 737 MAX software to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) next September 2019, which should allow regulators to lift the bases by the end of 2019 «We are working through a software update. We still anticipate submitting that certification package to the FAA by September and we are working to achieve a return to Max’s service in the fourth quarter», CEO Dennis Muilenburg told Investors on August 7, 2019.

Muilenburg’s comments arrive almost three weeks after the Chicago company revealed that timeline, which led several airlines to further change the date they expect their Max to return to the scheduled flight in the future. Several airlines now have the plane returning in January.

During an investor conference organized by Jefferies Financial Group on August 7, 2019, Muilenburg emphasizes that approval remains in the hands of regulators. But he tried to guarantee investors that Boeing is doing everything possible to achieve that timeline and ensure that, when the ground connection rises, the plane returns to the skies as smoothly as possible. In addition to adjusting the 737 MAX flight control software, Boeing has been holding worldwide meetings with 737 MAX customers and organizing simulator sessions with those customers, says Muilenburg. The company has also been developing new training materials and completing preservation work with the intention of helping to ensure that the 737 stored are ready for rapid deployment on airline flights.

Regulators initially grounded the 737 MAX due to concerns about the role played by the system’s increased maneuvering characteristics (MCAS) in two crashes. But in June, the FAA discovered a data processing problem that required Boeing to complete another review. That problem involved the processing of flight computer data, an FAA official said. A\W

Airbus A320/A321NEO’s case

images (7)

Airbus issues preventive security orders in A320NEO‘s to avoid the situation of the Boeing 737 MAX. In 2018, nine A320NEO’s in India were punished due to the shortage of Pratt and Whitney engine parts. To address what is called a possible unsafe condition, the European Union Air Safety Agency (EASA) sent a warning on July 31, 2019 warning about a similar, if remote, possibility of going wrong on Airbus 320NEO’s.

The reason why there is no dramatic flap over the EASA warning is based on new and more efficient engines, combined with improvements in the structure of the aircraft and the addition of fins, called Sharklets by Airbus. Airbus has been dedicated to due diligence by taking into account a scenario in which the angle of attack sensors could fail and is moving quickly to avoid such a possibility.

Therefore, to deny any such event in the air in the future, the European air safety authorities quickly rejected an Airworthiness Directive to change the flight manual to handle this scenario that never happened, but they say it could happen. While it has not happened in the same way, even once there have been some technical problems in the carriers according to EASA and the report sets grounds for a precautionary precaution. This Airworthiness Directive issued on the A320/A321NEO’s may show that Boeing is not alone with this type of problem, since the AOA (Attack Angle) sensors and their associated computer occasionally do not work properly or may work similarly improperly in Airbus A320/A321NEO’s.

The AOA sensor indirectly measures the amount of elevation generated by the wings. The name refers to the angle between the wing and the approaching air. Its main objective is to warn pilots of entry to the computer when the plane could stop aerodynamically and cause loss of control.

In a sensible move to ensure that A320NEO drivers are aware of such a possibility, EASA has stated: This condition, although never found during operations, if not corrected, could lead to an excessive pitching attitude, which could possibly result in a greater workload of the flight crew. To address this possible unsafe condition, Airbus issued the AFM TR (Airplane Flight Manual – Temporary Review) that limits the center of gravity envelope, which avoids the aforementioned condition.

EASA has stressed its concern in recording certain observations. In summary, the analysis and laboratory tests of the behavior of the A320NEO flight control laws identified a reduced efficiency of the attack protection angle when the aircraft is configured in certain flight configurations and in combination with specific maneuvers ordered by the flight crew. Airbus is alerting crews about this very external possibility. The agency will review the issue after August 30, 2019. A \ W

A repair on the Boeing 777X’s motor line delays the start of delivery to airlines

Resultado de imagen para GE9X logoA persistent repair of the engine in the new wide-body Boeing 777X will delay its first flight until early next year and delay the first delivery of the plane until the end of 2020, Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg said at an investor conference in New York on Wednesday, August 7, 2019, in the morning. «We are addressing engine problems, and GE has had some challenges in the first engine we discovered in some of the reliability tests», said Muilenburg, discussing the company’s perspectives at the Jefferies Global Industries Conference in New York City. York

«They are making some changes in the components. We believe that we have in our hands the change that is required, but we still have to perform some additional tests and, as a result, we do not expect the first flight to occur until the beginning of next year», says the Coeing CEO. The biggest delay of the great new Boeing aircraft, which was already running months after what the company had initially planned, marks another setback for Boeing, as it deals with the current crisis of its 737 MAX program. The delay in the entry into service of the 777X could affect both customers of Boeing airlines and their suppliers.

The Boeing 777X has the world’s largest jet engines ever manufactured. «We are still driving towards the first delivery by the end of 2020, but there is pressure on that schedule due to the delay in the engine and the first flight», Muilenburg said during the Jefferies conference, whose audio was broadcast live over the Internet.

GE Aviation executives previously revealed at the Paris Air Show in June 2019 that their engineers had found a solution to the problem with the new GE9X engine, but the extensive tests required to certify the engine would probably not be completed until later. Boeing will not fly the 777X, which had initially been planned to enter service in the middle of the year 2020, until the engine is certified. A \ W

Ciberseguridad afecta al Boeing 787

BRITAIN-AVIATION-SHOW-AEROSPACE-MANUFACTURINGAW | 2019 08 08 23:39 | AVIATION SAFETY / INDUSTRY

The system on board the Boeing 787 possible vulnerability to cyberattack

Boeing disputes the findings of IOActive before the presentation of Black Hat USA of the security firm. IOActive industrial cybersecurity expert Ruben Santamarta discovered last year a Boeing server exposed to the Internet that contains firmware specifications for the aviation manufacturer’s Boeing 787 and Boeing 737 aircraft networks. Intrigued, Santamarta searched the firmware of the 787, the highly networked aircraft of Boeing. He made a meticulous reverse engineering of the binary code and analyzed the configuration files, discovering multiple security vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to remotely access the sensitive avionics network of the aircraft, also known as the information systems network of the crew.

«It turns out that the firmware I was analyzing is part of the plane that is being segregated between the different networks», he told Dark Reading before publicly revealing his findings. The firmware belongs to a core network component in the 787 network and was plagued with buffer overflow, memory corruption, stack overflows and denial of service failures that, according to him, could be exploited by a hacker to get from remotely to the sensitive information systems of the aircraft crew.

The defective firmware found by Santamarta, a Honeywell VxWorks-based remote system known as the Maintenance System/File Server Module of the 787 crew’s information system could be mistreated by a remote attacker who could later wrest control of that system, according to the findings of Santamarta.

But Boeing argues that its network defenses would thwart the attack cases presented by IOActive, arguing that an attacker could not reach his avionics systems through these methods. «The IOActive scenarios cannot affect any critical or essential aircraft system and do not describe a way for remote attackers to access important 787 systems such as the avionics system. After working with IOActive to understand their research, Boeing and its partners they tested their findings in integrated environments, both in laboratories and on an airplane. Our in-depth tests confirmed that existing defenses on the wider 787 network avoid claimed scenarios», said a Boeing spokesman.

Meanwhile, IOActive says that Boeing is poorly characterizing the research and content of Santamarta’s findings. «We have and will establish very clearly the limitations of our scope in this investigation. We believe that these limitations are clearly described in our technical document at a level that even a layman is able to understand», says John Sheehy, director of strategic security services at IOActive.

Santamarta conducted his research in a laboratory and notes that the final effect on the avionics system is unclear without access to a real 787 aircraft. Even so, he says, an attacker who exploits the firmware could bypass network security controls and reach the avionics network. He or she could try to update the avionics systems firmware, for example, he says. «We don’t know if those [avionics] units are encrypted or signed [digitally] or how those units are verified, so I don’t know if it can really affect the functionality or status of those critical units. We don’t know what can be done next of that because we don’t have the avionics hardware», to prove it, said Ruben Santamarta.

The 787 has an on-board central network cabinet system that includes multiple network modules that segregate and provide network interfaces between the sensitive avionics network, passenger information and the flight entertainment system, and the maintenance system of Aircraft used by engineers, crew and airline employees. Boeing 787 models come with several communication channels, including satellite devices and wireless connections for when the plane lands and connects to GateLink, an airline network that downloads information about the arrival of the plane; It is also used by airlines or suppliers to send firmware updates to the aircraft network components, for example. The planes also have a wired port for maintenance operations while they are parked at the airport. A\W
